Nora Beck once had a goal to pound beers and be the coolest local at the hill. Now it seems like things have changed a little. Addiction, injuries, receiving hate, and an existential bail have all heavily influenced Nora and pushed her towards a different direction. What does that new direction look like? Well, we're not exactly sure but we know it involves snowboarding to her greatest ability and pushing herself while simultaneously doing so from a place of comfortability and happiness. She now aims to be her authentic self, living for nobody but her self, and doing so gratefully and unselfishly. All while putting down absolute a-grade bangers in the streets. Find out what sparked this life changing transformation and what she's endured along the way on this week's episode of The Bomb Hole!Follow Norahttps://www.instagram.com/snore.a/Follow Chris & JulesChris Grenier: https://www.instagram.com/grendiesel/Jules Spadaro: https://www.instagram.com/jjuice__box/Show Notes:Whitetail Resort | https://www.skiwhitetail.com/Shout out Tre SquadJib Gurl | https://www.instagram.com/jibgurl4evr/Sno Planks | https://www.instagram.com/snoplanks/Board Over Brains | https://www.instagram.com/board_over_brains/The Uninvited | https://www.instagram.com/the__uninvited/Riley Elliot | https://www.instagram.com/rileyelliott/Trevor Kennison | https://www.instagram.com/trevor_kennison/I Think You Should Leave "Piece of Shit" Sketch | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buK45NW_ikI&t=3sHot Coco | https://www.redbull.com/us-en/films/hot-cocoFor all things Bomb HoleWebsite | https://thebombhole.com/Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/thebombhole/YouTube: @TheBombHoleTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thebombholeListen on Apple Podcast | https://apple.co/3UEm0l5Listen on Spotify | https://sptfy.com/BombHoleSpotifyThis episode is sponsored byCapita: https://capitasnowboarding.comUnion: https://unionbindingcompany.comPub Beer: https://10barrel.com/beer/pub-beer/Hippeas: https://hippeas.com (Use BOMBHOLE at checkout for 20% off)Dragon: https://www.dragonalliance.com (Use BOMBHOLE20 at checkout for 20% off)Bubs Naturals: https://www.bubsnaturals.comMammoth: https://www.mammothmountain.comAutumn: https://autumnheadwear.comSpecial thank you to our Patreon Members for making our show possible! It's difficult to maintain a schedule that consistently allows for three square meals each day. Between running errands, taking calls, and sitting through meetings, consumers are increasingly relying on snacks to fuel them through a packed itinerary. In light of this trend, many companies are focusing on creating healthy and protein-packed products to conveniently grab when hunger strikes. In this podcast episode, Livio Bisterzo, Founder and CEO of Hippeas, shares how millennial snacking habits are driving the company’s product development and advertising strategies. He says the company seeks to “build a world around our consumers” in order to grow the brand into a multifaceted platform for healthy snacking.
Let's talk about the business of wellness… Livio Bisterzo is the Founder of chickpea snack sensation HIPPEAS - which turned over £3m in its first year - and under the guise of his parent business, Green Park, is passionate about creating brands that have a point-of-view, and that (in his words): “come out of nowhere, hungry to be everywhere”. In this episode, Livio dives into the early days of building a pioneering business, the brand story behind HIPPEAS and why taking on capital in the early days allowed him to ready the business for rapid growth. We also talk about building strong consumer relationships and why the best brands of the future will be the ones that operate successfully online, and offline. "Millennials are the modern hippies. They got to Coachella and want the world to be a better place - that was the insight.” That's Livio Bisterzo, the CEO of Green Park Brands, the brand studio behind the insanely popular puffed snack Hippeas. This week, we talk to Livio about taking a consumer-oriented, Big CPG approach to building startup brands. Plus, he fills us in on the unintended consequences of launching in Starbucks, why he's bullish on billboards, and of course, why he believes Millennials are the hippies of today.
Reflecting on a 31-year-career that has seen him evolve from an acclaimed chef and founder of an award-winning restaurant group to a media personality and successful CPG food entrepreneur, Rick Bayless points to authenticity as the guiding principle in his own journey and as an indispensable element to success in the food business. "I want the real deal,” Bayless said in an interview included in this episode of Taste Radio. “I don't want to modify a recipe just to make it more mass." As part of our conversation, Bayless discussed the origins of his food career, the launch, development and eventual sale of his packaged food brand, Frontera Foods, why he was ahead of the game on clean labels and transparency, and his take on the future of food. Like Bayless, Susie Fogelson also has her share of experience at the intersection of food and media. For nearly 15 years, Susie spearheaded marketing strategy for the Food Network and Cooking Channel, culminating in her role as the senior vice president of marketing & brand strategy. In our second interview, Fogelson shared insights gleaned from her career at the Food Network, including the importance of purpose-driven marketing and why transparency is an opportunity for brands to tell a story. Also included in this episode: a conversation with Jamie Meltzer, the founder and CEO of Watermelon Road, an upstart brand of fruit jerky and the winner of NOSH Live Summer 2018’s Pitch Slam 4. Show notes: 1:42: Meals, Wheels and West: The hosts discussed Expo West housing, the business of meal kits, including the recent shuttering of Chef’d, and WeWork’s transition to a meatless office culture. 12:02: Interview: Rick Bayless, Founder, Frontera Foods -- Recorded at the 2018 Fancy Food Show, Bayless, known for his expertise in Mexican cooking and cuisine, discussed how he cut his teeth in the food business as the host of the PBS series “Cooking Mexican,” and the development of his acclaimed restaurant group. He also spoke about entering the packaged food business with Frontera Foods, a brand of gourmet Mexican products that includes salsas, sauces, and meals and its acquisition by ConAgra Foods in 2016 for $108.9 million, a sale that Bayless fleshed out in the interview. 34:23: Interview: Susie Fogelson, Founder, F&Co -- After 15 years leading marketing efforts at the Food Network and Cooking Channel, Fogelson founded founded F&Co., a boutique consultancy that works with food brands to develop a blueprint for storytelling and experiences. In our conversation, recorded at the 2018 Summer Fancy Food Show, she offers her perspective on the evolution of the food space and how brands can best communicate with their consumers. 55:23: Interview: Jamie Meltzer, Founder, Watermelon Road -- Meltzer sat down with us following her big win and experience in NOSH Live’s Pitch Slam 4, and discussed her experience in the competition, finding her brand’s voice and what’s next for her brand. Brands in this episode: Chef’d, Blue Apron, Hello Fresh, Frontera Foods, Hippeas, 4505 Meats, Watermelon Road
When it comes to entrepreneurship, Clayton Christopher believes that “you can’t read the book; you gotta live it.” And live it he has; Christopher is best known as the co-founder of Sweet Leaf Tea, acquired by Nestlé Waters in 2011, and Deep Eddy Vodka, which just five years after its launch was sold to Heaven Hill Distilling for a reported $400 million. Yet even as a highly successful entrepreneur and investor, Christopher, currently the co-founder and managing director of private equity firm CAVU, has always looked beyond simply achieving a desired end result. In an interview included in this episode of Taste Radio, he urged business owners “to appreciate and cherish the journey,” a perspective that will yield a rare and valuable currency few will ever grasp. As part of our conversation, Christopher also delved into why he believes that “the need for human capital is greater than it’s ever been,” how board and management teams can most effectively work together, and why entrepreneurs should spend less time on adding new distribution and instead focus on “creating a success story” inside individual stores. This episode also features an interview with another “kitchen to exit” entrepreneur: John McDonald, the founder of iconic craft beer company Boulevard Brewing. Welcome to HOOVERING, the podcast about eating. Host, Jessica Fostekew (Guilty Feminist, Motherland) has a frank conversation with an interesting person about gobbling; guzzling; nibbling; scoffing; devouring and wolfing all up… or if you will, hoovering. This week I’m joined by comedian with a self-confessed ‘absolute-wanker-level’ love of all things food related – Hal Branson. He brings me a huge rucksack full of incredible treats which we plough through like it’s Christmas, whilst, to both of our surprise, opening our hearts right up about binging, mental health and some pretty ripe stuff about our parents. Recipes Butternut Squash, aubergine and red lentil sambhar from ‘Fresh India’ by Meera Sodha. I’ve since bought it because it’s brilliant but if you’re really strapped and want this recipe pop me an email and I’ll send you a picture of it. And here’s a link to the totally gorgeous pear, rye and cardamom cake which Hal made, via Ruby Tandoh. Prettily easy made vegan using flax eggs I reckon and maybe a sweetened and spiced cashew cheese instead of the butter? But it was delicious even without the butter – so good. Honorable Mentions There are so many of these this week! The vegan wotsits are called Hippeas and you can defo get them in Sainsbury’s and Boots. The swanky coffee he brought was from Ouseborn. The filmore and union pistachio and chocolate log thing was totally sublime, beyond any health food treat I’d ever found. Hal raves about a restaurant in Newcastle called ‘Al Bayak‘ or ‘The Bake’ and his friend’s brewing company Northern Alchemy sounds pretty wicked too. And if you’re interest was peaked by the prospect of wine that looks like piss but hasn’t any chemicals in then look up Naked Wines. We stand for the ugly truth For example, we targeted Red Bull. Most sugary drinks have the same taglines. They talk about how it improves people’s lives but not their health. Have you gotten criticism on your aggressive ads?: No, people are very receptive. People should have choice and transparency How did you meet your cofounder?: Thomas and Joe met in a drink company. Thomas was in marketing, Joe was in sales. Originally had a still bottle drink but consumers wanted canned sparkling water. The first step was: how do we even make this? Called a lot of manufacturing facilities. A lot of people said “no” but eventually found one. How do you have people validate a food product?: Start small, make your own batches and go to farmer’s market. Once you see repeat basis, you have something. You can test on a farmer’s market or even online. How do you find a copacker?: To get a copacker to notice you, invest in a domain name and email, and a logo to show that you are legitimate. If they can’t help you, you have to follow up: “do you know anyone who can?”. This question helped a lot. The steps you took to get to where you are today: I finished university and started at Heinz brand management team. Then I joined a smaller startup as their first marketer and had to do everything. The brand grew massively (he met Rihanna!). I met my cofounder and left when the team had 60 people. What is the different in working in a big company versus small company?: I hated structure in a big company but I missed it in the small company. You should have a simple plan as too much structure will overbear you. For example: We aligned our team to do store demos and not big shows. This allowed us to focus and refine. As the team grows, you can improve structure. Doing store demos helped a ton with communicating the brand to people. How long did it take you to transition full time to Ugly?: Thomas and Joe came up with the idea in 2013. Thought it would take 2-3 months, took 18 months to start. 9-5 job and production fumbles, legal fees, etc caused some delays. Was there a concrete period where you had to quit?: You need a 3 month notice period. We had to talk to the CEO and he gave us his blessing. We did 3 month runway from leaving our jobs and getting into stores. How did you get into stores?: Joe had some connections, but sometimes you have to get into the trenches Why did people accept your project?: The UK wants to try new things. Our team is super energetic and have people give us a chance Lisa Tse I always thought London had terrible food: In the past, yes. In the last 4 years, the CPG industry has innovated in London. The supply chain got more interesting. Jamie Oliver also was a huge factor of making people more adventurous and health contious My Food Job Rocks: The best feeling is seeing someone with your product walking down the street with someone. What do you look for in your first couple of employee?: Passion matters more. IQ and EQ matters a ton. Lots of varying skill sets. What type of food trends and tehcnologies are exiting right now?: Online commerce. There will be a lot of food that will be sold online. Plant based protein will also be popular because it’s appealing to all eaters. It’s better for your body and better for the world. Cold brew coffee and kombucha is exploding in the UK What is the best social media space for food brands?: Instagram and Facebook. Your website needs to be set up to handle the user experience. Have them “go into the funnel” What is the biggest challenge the food industry has to face?: The food industry needs to understand how the digital world works What is one thing in the food industry you’d like to know more about?: Microbiology! It would help me sleep better at night. We are creating products, they need to be safe. Who inspired you to get into food?: I’ve always loved how brands affect people. I’m excited in how my brand gave impact. What type of brands do you admire?: Hippeas and RXBar What makes a great marketing campaign?: You have to understand the consumer and understand what that consumer’s like Romancing the Brand Favorite Quote: You’re the average of the 5 people that you spend the most time with Favorite Book: The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday Favorite Kitchen Item: Toaster Other books by Ryan Holiday’s Growth Hacker Marketing, Ego is the Enemy, Perennial Seller Favorite Meal: Surprised my mom for lunch at The River Café in London. Jaime Oliver learned to cook there. It’s the people you’re with that matters. Any advice for food entrepreneurs?: Be patient and don’t spend money. Also really think a lot about your brand and vision. Where can we find you?: email me at hugh@uglydrinks.com, @uglyhugh, at linkedin How about Ugly?: We’re launching in the US early 2018! You can find us anywhere. Talk to us at hello@uglydrinks.com. We want to pay it forward.
On this episode of The Barron Report, Paul talks to consumer entrepreneur and CEO of Hippeas, Livio Bisterzo about the future of consumer packaged goods. In the midst of creating a better “puff”, Hippeas has set out to change the landscape of consumer packaged goods from flavor to supply chain. Hippeas are entirely organic, gluten-free, non-GMO and vegan and support the charity organization Farm Africa. They are pushing the industry to think “how can I do this better?” Listen along with the show notes below to learn more!0:57 Livio Bisterzo, CEO and Co-founder, Hippeas2:14 - The AHA moment3:37 - Knowing Your Consumers' Wants and Needs5:25 - Partnering for the Good of the Planet7:17 - The Food Revolution9:02 - Specialty Food Goes Direct to Consumer11:12 - Growing the Chickpea Supply Chain15:12 - The Selective Investor17:42 - The Future of CPG
Livio Bisterzo and Jenna discuss the future of food - the entire middle of the store is ripe for disruption - and why personalization is the future of tomorrow's most successful food brands. Livio walks us through Hippeas commitment to giving back and consistently strengthening their supply chain, why he still receives every email that comes through the site, and the vision fueling the company's rapid ascent; Build a brand that's representative of a $100 million company even if you're just launching, he says. We also break down how to build a culture to scale, why founders have to be the first one in and last one out, and the need to constantly remain vigilant; “We never take anything for granted here. We never rest. We can't rest.”
In this episode of the BevNET Podcast, we sat down with Mark Mahoney, the co-founder and CEO of premium cocktail mixer brand Powell & Mahoney, who joined us for a discussion about his background as a beverage entrepreneur, the rapid development of the premium mixer space and what's next for the thriving category. This episode also includes a segment with BevNET editor-in-chief Jeffrey Klineman, who examined recent investment deals in the food and beverage industry, including First Beverage Ventures’ investment in a mezcal company, Castanea Partners’ acquisition of a majority stake in craft brewery The Bruery and a new round of funding for fast-growing snack brand Hippeas, one that included actor Leonardo DiCaprio. We also spoke with Loco Coffee Co. co-founder Dan Bresciani for the latest edition of “Elevator Talk.”
We had a wonderfully weird FoodTalk Show this week. There was a member of the Cadbury family and Puff Daddy, but we weren't talking chocolate or rap music . What on earth would Sue Nelson and Guy Routledge be discussing then? Well, first of all, let's explain Puff Daddy. Craig Hughes isn't the Puff Daddy, but he's our Puff Daddy. I know you're still confused though, why is he our Puff Daddy? Basically, he has it stitched into his suit jacket and is one of the driving forces behind Hippeas – the chickpea delights with a perfect puff. Moving from peas to beans (we were right on the pulse this week), we heard from the flavoured coffee company, Beanies. Mark explains all about their rise and how they have managed to make a perky cuppa that's only two calories… Now to explain the Cadbury bit. This story is much more simple, but the story is just as amazing. Justin Cadbury, great-grandson of the chocolate founder, is the Chairman of a revolutionary bit of kitchen technology called Synergy Grill. Words cannot do justice as to how amazing this is; no fat and halved gas bills anybody?
Livio Bisterzo thinks millennials are the new hippies. And he’s got just the snack for them. A longtime entrepreneur, Bisterzo is the founder and CEO of Green Park Brands, a self-described “food innovation company” based in Los Angeles. Approximately 18 months ago, the company launched its first brand, Hippeas, a line of organic chickpea puffs available in six varieties. The vegan snacks are high in fiber and protein and sold in wide range of natural and conventional grocery retailers; they’re also carried nationally at Starbucks cafes. In a recent interview recorded for this edition of the BevNET podcast, Bisterzo credited the early distribution success of Hippeas to branding that’s less about the functional attributes of the snacks and more about reaching a broad base of consumers. “Too many companies and too many entrepreneurs just focus on selling the functionality of the product, and I think that will only take you [so] far,” Bisterzo said. “It’s really just about creating a brand world that you can then take to the consumer, to your stakeholders, to your customers, and you can bring everybody along for the ride.” Listen to our interview with Bisterzo in which he discusses more about Green Park’s branding philosophy, including his belief that the ecosystem of the food and beverage industry is moving away from “branding based on an entrepreneur’s background and experience,” why upstart companies are attracting top marketing talent from CPG conglomerates and why similarities between millennials and the hippie generation matter. Also in this episode of the podcast: a conversation with BevNET events director Ashley Harding and the company’s “Italian army knife” Anthony Ferranti. The discussion includes their favorite drinks of the moment and how each is preparing for the upcoming BevNET Live, NOSH Live and Brewbound Session conferences, all of which will be held in New York City in June.
