Today we're going to talk about the limits to growth marketing, aka "growth hacking." In his book "Growth Hacker Marketing," Ryan Holiday defines this person as: "A growth hacker is someone who [works] with only what is testable, trackable, and scalable. Growth hackers relentlessly pursue users and growth and when they do it right, those users beget more users, who beget more users." There's nothing wrong with this practice per se. But there are stages in an industry's life cycle where it's the wrong approach. You can't, for example, continuously improve a metric when there's no data to base the metric on in the first place. There are other industries where privacy or perceptions require you to use a different approach. This is the world that Ned Nadima lives in. Growing up in Ottawa, he now spends much of his time in Newfoundland, studying and working as a marketer in the Biotech industry His main passions are growing businesses that involve neuroscience, and artificial intelligence. He avidly follows his crossfit routine and practices optimal living, experimenting with fasting, sleep hacking, diet and other ways to promote longevity. Like Ryan Holiday, he's also into stoic philosophy. Listen to Ned explain what you CAN do when you CAN'T growth hack. How Cassie Sold 650k Albums With 650k Followers How @cassie sold 650k albums with 650k followers One of the best marketing books I ever read was “Growth Hacker Marketing” by @ryahholiday Completely changed the perspective on how I view marketing which has lead to my success. Want to buy to the book? Click the link in my bio, scroll down and buy it from my Amazon store. @ryanleslie found the ultimate growth hack in populating high in google results under the term MySpace. This is when Google keywords were dirt cheap and super effective. This caused Cassie to gain 650,000 followers on MySpace and she sold 650,000 albums. 1:1 ratio. That doesn’t happen today and is an unreal expectation. But Ryan and Cassie didn’t keep the contact info for those 650,000 people. So once MySpace went to shit, so did Cassie’s social media fanbase. You have to own the contact info for your fanbase. In this video I give you 3 ways to do that. Are there any other ways to own your fanbase’s contact info? Myśleć trochę mniej o sobie, a trochę więcej o ludziach wokół siebie. Listen to “Ego to Twój wróg – Ryan Holiday” on Spreaker. W wieku 19 lat rzucił studia i rozpoczął nauki u Robert’a Greene, autora książki “The 48 Laws of Power”. M.in.

Vin Clancy (https://vinclancy.com/) is our special guest on today's episode of Traffic and Leads Podcast. Vin knows some of the best ways to gain more traffic and leads towards your businesses revolve around growth hacks. He’s been in this business for a while, and currently, he helps small businesses grow their business through the cheat codes of the internet. Let’s get started! IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: * What you can expect when you read Vin’s book, Ace the Game. Different from his first book, Vin explains that this book sort of focuses on techniques that have worked for him, and how they could help his audience as well. It’s a collection from the best growth hackers in the world, with a couple of his own sprinkled into the mix. * Vin tells us about one of the most powerful growth hacks that exist in his book! The most powerful way to get meetings and startups happening in Silicon Valley, Vin says, is through LinkedIn automation. He tells us about LinkedHelper, a software that allows you to input your target market. Through that information, it’ll find all of those people who work in those fields, and through the day, it’ll automatically connect with those people. If they accept, you can send them the first message, and this process done every day helps create more leads, and more conversations in your inbox. * Vin tells us what makes a good LinkedIn message. While it’s true that you want to be vulnerable, different, and honest about what you’re saying, you need to also make sure that what you’re writing about is something people want to know. Balance those important traits with bringing exceptional information to your market, and bring the best new marketing strategies as often as you can. * Vin gives us another growth hack from his book, stating that most people don’t know that your visitors can be identified. By using a combination of Lead Feeder and Drip, you can insert a couple of lines of code into your website that identifies everyone that visits. These codes grab their name, company, and email address, and using Drip, you can enroll those people into an email sequence. Next thing you know, you’re ready for cold outreach! * When it comes to the number one hack in marketing, Vin gives us some backstory on the e-commerce world. It seems easy to master, but it’s very hard to source products and get ahead of the competition that is so well established. The best growth hack for marketing online is what’s called one click upsell. Popularized by click funnels, this method appears when people are online shopping. Once they add something to their cart, they’re offered something similar on the next screen for purchase as well. With one click, they can purchase this product, or deny the offer. Overall, it’s very successful and increases the average basket size. * Lastly, Vin gives us some hacks for a Facebook group. Using a software called Grytics, Vin explains that in order to make sure your group is top ranked, you need active members. By posting and addressing the members to see who is active, you can then go in and use Gryptics to remove the inactive members of the group, making it easier to find people who want to use what you’re offering. This is a good reason to never buy fake followers, Vin warns.
Today we highlight the creative of growth hacker though by focusing on small but brilliant ideas. Featured book - Growth Hacker Marketing by Ryan Holiday: https://amzn.to/2WN4HQv

The internet and evolution of traditional products has given rise to a new discipline in marketing called 'growth hacking' or "growth hacker marketing." Products are no longer just physical things, they are software products like apps, platforms and podcasts that have the potential of spreading themselves and playing a role in their own adoption. Growth hackers understand this power of virality, and use a combination of marketing, analytics and engineering to acquire and engage users—with the ultimate goal of users becoming brand advocates themselves. A growth hacker is a creative rule breaker. They must continually think of new and innovative ways to drive growth. They are masters in things like social media, blogging, A/B testing, copy wiring, UI/UX, automation, email marketing, SEO and more. While this might sound similar to a digital marketer, the main difference is that digital marketing is focused on brand and positioning, while growth hacking is all about testing and perfecting different tactics and strategies to achieve one thing and one thing only—GROWTH! In this episode, Hala interviews Josh Fechter, CEO and founder of BAMF (Badass Marketers & Founders), a growth marketing agency and exclusive Facebook community with over 30,000 members. Josh is the former head of growth for several venture-backed companies who rose to fame this year on LinkedIn by starting a viral storytelling trend that broke the professional social media network's algorithm. Growth hacking is not just a 2018 buzz phrase. Tune in to learn how Josh overcame early career failures, unlocked growth hacking secrets, and became one of the top growth marketing influencers in the world. Jeśli chcesz lepiej poznać ten inne przykłady, to zapraszam cię do posłuchania dzisiejszego odcinka podcastu o książce Growth Hacker Marketing autorstwa Ryan’a Holiday’a. Listen to “KKU#24 – Growth Hacker Marketing – Ryan Holiday” on Spreaker. Całkiem dobra opcja, no nie?

We stand for the ugly truth For example, we targeted Red Bull. Most sugary drinks have the same taglines. They talk about how it improves people’s lives but not their health. Have you gotten criticism on your aggressive ads?: No, people are very receptive. People should have choice and transparency How did you meet your cofounder?: Thomas and Joe met in a drink company. Thomas was in marketing, Joe was in sales. Originally had a still bottle drink but consumers wanted canned sparkling water. The first step was: how do we even make this? Called a lot of manufacturing facilities. A lot of people said “no” but eventually found one. How do you have people validate a food product?: Start small, make your own batches and go to farmer’s market. Once you see repeat basis, you have something. You can test on a farmer’s market or even online. How do you find a copacker?: To get a copacker to notice you, invest in a domain name and email, and a logo to show that you are legitimate. If they can’t help you, you have to follow up: “do you know anyone who can?”. This question helped a lot. The steps you took to get to where you are today: I finished university and started at Heinz brand management team. Then I joined a smaller startup as their first marketer and had to do everything. The brand grew massively (he met Rihanna!). I met my cofounder and left when the team had 60 people. What is the different in working in a big company versus small company?: I hated structure in a big company but I missed it in the small company. You should have a simple plan as too much structure will overbear you. For example: We aligned our team to do store demos and not big shows. This allowed us to focus and refine. As the team grows, you can improve structure. Doing store demos helped a ton with communicating the brand to people. How long did it take you to transition full time to Ugly?: Thomas and Joe came up with the idea in 2013. Thought it would take 2-3 months, took 18 months to start. 9-5 job and production fumbles, legal fees, etc caused some delays. Was there a concrete period where you had to quit?: You need a 3 month notice period. We had to talk to the CEO and he gave us his blessing. We did 3 month runway from leaving our jobs and getting into stores. How did you get into stores?: Joe had some connections, but sometimes you have to get into the trenches Why did people accept your project?: The UK wants to try new things. Our team is super energetic and have people give us a chance Lisa Tse I always thought London had terrible food: In the past, yes. In the last 4 years, the CPG industry has innovated in London. The supply chain got more interesting. Jamie Oliver also was a huge factor of making people more adventurous and health contious My Food Job Rocks: The best feeling is seeing someone with your product walking down the street with someone. What do you look for in your first couple of employee?: Passion matters more. IQ and EQ matters a ton. Lots of varying skill sets. What type of food trends and tehcnologies are exiting right now?: Online commerce. There will be a lot of food that will be sold online. Plant based protein will also be popular because it’s appealing to all eaters. It’s better for your body and better for the world. There are a million reasons we like to bury our heads in the sand and just get lost in our art, but if you want your creative business to consistently thrive for the long haul, we need to stay tuned to the culture, where our audience’s attention is and what people are responding to in our work. Can you imagine any business completely ignoring their audience / the market and succeeding long term? Can you imagine a stock broker that didn’t follow the stock market? I believe that creative professionals are partially called to be like stock brokers in the stock exchange, but instead dealing in the currency of culture exchange. Ryan Holiday calls this ‘Product Market Fit’ in his book Growth Hacker Marketing, and in this episode we do a deep dive into WHY ignorance about your industry and culture in general is a terrible strategy and how to stay-tuned-in in such a way that you develop and evolve with your audience. Einnig mælti hann með bókinni Markaðssetning á netinu eftir Kristján Má Hauksson og Guðmund Arnar Guðmundsson Að auki mætli Þorsteinn með Growth Hacker Marketing eftir Ryan Holiday SEO for growth eftir John Jantsch & Phil Singleton
Welcome to episode #525 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. Some know Ryan Holiday as a media strategist, while others know him as a PR machine. Others know him as a speaker, and some know him as a bestselling author. Recently, it seems, Ryan has decided to focus on being a thoughtful non-fiction writer. His efforts have been paying off. His latest book, Ego Is The Enemy, has quickly become a huge bestseller. His last book, The Obstacle Is The Way, exploded as well, as many professional athletes (especially in the NFL) latched on to his modern take on stoicism. It may not seem obvious, but Ryan is looking back on an ancient form of philosophy and modernizing it with amazing insights for people today. How did he make this happen? What do brands (and business professionals) need to know about this? It's important and it matters. What is holding us back? How do we think about ourselves, others and the work that we do? Are social media and technology making us the worst people possible? Ryan's first book was, Trust Me I'm Lying, and his second book was, Growth Hacker Marketing. He's also a contributor to the New York Observer and many more. Many people consider Ryan to be one of the brightest thinkers in business today. I agree. Enjoy the conversation... Growth Hacker Marketing and The Obstacle Is The Way. Ryan’s an expert on media manipulation, resilience and growth - and his new book Ego Is The Enemy is due out soon. Tune in to hear why ‘fake it til you make it’ is terrible advice, why Donald Trump won’t last long, and what you can learn about business from Angela Merkel, Marina Abramovich, and Kanye West. Time Stamped Show Notes: 01:12 – Nathan’s introduction 01:40 – “I’m fascinated with the accumulation of wisdom over the last thousand years” 02:25 – Ryan dropped out of college, and assisted Tucker Max and Robert Green 02:40 – Ryan was the director of marketing at American Apparel and has since authored 4 books 03:50 – He had a $250k advance on his first book, Trust Me, I'm Lying 05:35 – The economics of books - the advance might not be high, but sales can build 07:42 – The Obstacle is the Way has been used by the NFL, the military, and other competitive areas 09:06 – “If you can build multiple income streams, you can take more creative risks” 10:10 – Why write another book? 10:33 – “Writing is what I love...it’s what makes me feel fulfilled” 11:05 – Ryan’s latest book is Ego is the Enemy 11:55 – “You want a book to provoke a discussion” 12:30 – Almost every business book is based on the idea that “you’re doing great” - Ryan wanted to take that idea down 13:31 – “There’s a difference between confidence and ego. Ego is when you lose self-awareness and start living in illusions” 14:54 – “If you start believing in your own greatness, it’s the death of creativity” - Marina Abramovich 16:00 – It isn’t ego if you have a realistic confidence in your abilities - based on your own track record 16:40 – When ego becomes dangerous is when you act as though you’ve already accomplished the things that you’re really only starting to work on 17:50 – The problem with social media is that you can get credit for things that you haven’t yet done 18:43 – “If you tell a kid that they’ve done well because they’re smart, they’ll do worse than if you praise them for working hard” 19:28 – What about brainwashing yourself? Nathan: “Sometimes you can only achieve things by convincing yourself that you’re better than you are” 21:10 – Kanye West’s fashion line has failed because he didn’t apply the same work to it that he applied to his music. He made the mistake of thinking that he was successful because of who he was - not the work he put in 23:03 – Successful people aren’t successful because of their ego - sometimes it’s in spite of their ego 24:29 – “Passion is not a substitute for knowledge, it’s not a substitute for a plan or knowing what you’re doing” 27:15 – “You can’t build a reputation on what you’re going to do.” Would you want your doctor faking it until he makes it? Would you want a firefighter faking it until she makes it? 28:33 – “As a marketing tactic, talking about things before they happen is great - but don’t buy into your own crap” 29:39 – “Fear is a bad adviser” - Angela Merkel 30:58 – Fear of missing out and fear of risk are both bad advisers - focus on the data and you’ll make better decisions 32:08 – Donald Trump? “Demigods are successful in the short term - they’re very rarely successful in the long term” 3 Key Points: Confidence is great - but once you start believing your own hype, you’ll stop working effectively. Don’t let fear or ego make your decisions. Look at the data. You can’t build a reputation on what you’re going to do. There’s no substitute for sitting down and doing the work. Welcome to episode #384 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. Is the future of marketing going to be owned by engineers and hackers? Brands like Uber, AirBnB, Dropbox, Instagram and many more Silicon Valley startup darlings have built magnificent and defendable brands without any of the traditional advertising fare and relying only on word of mouth within the social media channels as a form of awareness and validation. It would lead some traditional marketing practitioners to wonder if these brands have uncovered the true secret to viral marketing, or if there is something much more substantive underneath the hood? There has been a lot of attention on the idea of Growth Hacking. Some call it Growth Hacker Marketing. That is the title of Ryan Holiday's latest business book. These Growth Hackers are engineers, coders and entrepreneurs who don't know (or follow) the traditional marketing path (because it's not something they have studied or practiced). They don't sit in the marketing department or have optics into the CMO's office. Instead, these people spend their entire day testing acquisition strategies and leveraging technologies like split A/B testing, web analytics and social listening tools to get people to try, share and loyally use their products and services. Holiday (who is also the author of Trust Me I'm Lying: Confessions Of A Media Manipulator) took some time to discuss this new form of marketing and what it all means. Enjoy the conversation... Author and strategist Ryan Holiday returns to the podcast. Holiday's new book, "Growth Hacker Marketing" struck Covel as codifying many of the most important entrepreneurial precepts for success today. Covel and Holiday discuss the definition of "growth hacking"; the different forms of growth hacking; why many other marketing books pertain to big business rather than startups; the startup mentality; how Holiday turned to Bittorrent to launch Tim Ferriss' "The 4-Hour Chef"; platforms in the growth hacking mindset; letting others be lucky; growth hacking in the context of startups; the idea of a product market fit, changing your product, and assessing its strengths and weaknesses; the marketing implications of knowing the "the product is never done"; standing by your convictions but being open minded to change; the anachronism of press releases; Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram; the concept of other peoples' money, the lack of flexibility that goes along with that, and the importance of being able to change. Whether you are an entrepreneur with your unique idea, or even a trader, Holiday's engineering way of approaching the world should not be ignored. It's all about hard work and resourcefullness. Ryan Holiday can be reached at RyanHoliday.net and "Growth Hacker Marketing" is available wherever e-books are sold. Free Covel trend following DVD: trendfollowing.com/win.
