Dean's Chat hosts, Dr. Jensen and Richey, welcome Dr. Lindsey Hjelm from St. Cloud Minneapolis. Join us as we discuss all things podiatric medicine, including the importance of positive psychology and the importance and power of mentorship. Dr. Hjelm graduated in the top of her class with a Bachelors of Arts in Biology and a Minor in Studio Art and Religious Studies at Gustave Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minnesota. Join us, as we discuss liberal arts education and non-traditional paths. We cover how being a student athlete helps with resiliency and grit as well as develop skills like time management. This episode is sponsored by Bako Diagnostics! She went on to complete her Doctorate of Podiatric Medical Degree with Des Moines University followed by a three year surgical residency program with Franciscan Foot and Ankle Institute in Federal Way, Washington. She completed her fellowship under the direction of Dr. Byron Hutchinson with Advanced Foot and Ankle Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship. Listen how Dr. Hjelm's career was shaped after she suffered an injury as an athlete and how having a female surgeon inspired her at a young age. We dive into how setbacks can help us become the best versions of ourselves and give us better perspectives, both as we treat patients, but also how we show up and lead others. Finally, we transition into leadership by highlighting how small the profession is and the value of relationships. We discuss the networking and connections that have shaped all of our lives and how having the courage to reach out to others who you admire can lead to opportunities you never thought may happen. Mentorship can happen organically and she discusses how mentors can be found in many places and platforms. We hope you enjoy this inspiring episode. Enjoy!

As part of the work of a behavior analyst, our ethical code requires us to explain our services in language that can be understood by clients and stakeholders. That holds doubly true when our clients speak a primary language other than English. And just busting out Google Translate isn't going to cut it! In the next entry in our Tutorial series, we break out the “how to” basics behind following best practices when working with an interpreter in delivering ABA services. From meaningful feedback and collaboration with an interpreter to ensuring a respectful flow of communication between all parties, we'll get your practice up to speed in no time. Well, at least in the time it takes to listen to this episode. This episode is available for 1.0 CULTURAL (ETHICS) CEU.

“Art can be part healing process. The difference is that it's not meant to be something that somebody goes to watch. It's something that is actually there all the time and can it be part of the healing process rather than just decorating a room in a hospital. I've been thinking around the ideas of healing environments, and there's a lot of research being done. People heal faster a garden rather than a parking lot, for example. The theory is that an opening in the woods with a little bit of water is probably the most healing place. That's the safest because that's what we have built-in as humans as the safe spot. The ocean is not safe, but the little pond. So, what I've done in this particular project with the radiotherapy rooms is that I've taken images from healing wells, partly from Stellenbosch National Park in Capetown, in Rio. I've been filming these water surfaces. I've been filming the trees through the water surface basically to create that water pond and the trees around, but from these places that have kind of a healing history.” Mats Hjelm is an artist, documentary filmmaker and creator of multimedia installations who currently lives in Stockholm. His work investigates the boundaries between art and movements of social justice, video installation and documentary practices, and personal and global political narratives. He has worked extensively in Europe, West Africa, United States, and Brazil and has shown in numerous exhibitions, including Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, Walker Art Center, and the Venice Biennale, among others.· www.matshjelm.se· www.oneplanetpodcast.org· www.creativeprocess.info
