“Compassion is not conditional.  It matters the most when you don't have a natural connection with somebody.”- Georgina BoulineauTen years ago, we weren't talking much about vulnerability and compassion at work. Today, it's part and parcel - especially when organizations and the people that make them work are all navigating huge waves of ongoing change such as mergers and acquisitions or technological transformations, and anxiety-provoking world events such as the Covid 19 pandemic, the war in Russia and runaway inflation. In today's episode, my guest and I get grounded around what really matters. My guest is Georgina Boulineau.  Georgina is VP People and Culture at YIT, a leading provider of materials handling.  Georgina was born in the suburbs of Paris, France and when people think about Paris they think about the city of light and how romantic it is but if you step outside of Paris and into the suburbs, it can be very dangerous and that's where all vulnerable diverse communities are located. Georgina lived in one of those diverse communities and, looking back, realized that this group of visible minorities had very limited opportunities because of a lot of discrimination around them. The opportunities were very limited in France even back then which is why her parents decided to leave the country. They chose Canada because they were looking for a safer, more welcoming and accepting community for their 3 kids.  Georgina quickly found a genuine interest in people, wanting to find out about their stories and journeys. She started her career in Human Resources as an HR Coordinator and built  a career in People & Culture from there. In this episode of Talent Management Truths, you'll discover:

Diversity has been highlighted within news reports, articles, and leaders across the globe. While this commitment to embracing diversity is justified, it is difficult to develop strategies to invigorate change beyond boilerplate stump speeches. The well-crafted diversity statement has become an integral element of a modern company. Saying the right things about inclusion is only the first step; embodying equity at all levels of business must be scaffolded by intentionality, commitment, and compassion. To help explore ways to embrace the complexities of who we are, the College of Business is proud to have special guest and NIU alum, Jocelyn Moore. Jocelyn Moore is globally astute Human Resource Executive. Jocelyn is the General Manager, Global Diversity & Inclusion at Microsoft. In this capacity Jocelyn is responsible for leading Global Diversity & Inclusion for the Microsoft Customer & Partner Solutions group and for all geographies. She brings 20 years of progressive Human Resources experience from global companies like Aon Hewitt, Medline Industries, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and DXC Technology. Jocelyn has held many transformative Human Resources roles. She started her career as a HR Coordinator and worked her way through the ranks to more progressive complex Human Resources positions.Prior to joining Microsoft, she was with a North American based company, responsible for transforming the entire HR department. Jocelyn also spent time as the VP Global Talent Acquisition with DXC Technology, responsible for recruiting 30,000 new employees each year across the company's global footprint. In this capacity, Jocelyn was directly responsible for leading all Global Talent Acquisition strategies, including relationship management, workforce planning, talent channels, and overall governance. She recognizes she was helped along her career journey and wants to pay it forward. Over the years, Jocelyn has done resume and interviewing workshops, served on many nonprofit boards all focused on helping students with diverse backgrounds, and has had several mentees. She holds a Bachelor of Science in HR Management and MBA from Northern Illinois University was the 2018 Distinguished Alumni Management Department and the 2021 Distinguished Alumni for the NIU College of Business. My guest this week is Christina Cantu who managed to secure her first HR job at the start of 2022. After a whirlwind 12 months, seeing her nominated as Emerging HR Professional of the Year, Christina has learnt a heck of a lot and kindly shares her story and experiences with me.Christina is the first person in her family to attend University and since she can remember she has had a plan of achieving her Bachelors degree, then a Masters, and finally a PhD. Having secured a BA in Psychology, she is about to complete her MA in Public Administration.HR came on to her radar after her Mother first suggested it but at that time Christina's perception of HR was that of most - the department that just hires and fires people. However, it was through a module within the Masters study course that she learnt about the wider remit and impact that great HR can have.As she entered the job market Christina found it extremely tough. She was applying for entry level HR roles but consistently found that she wasn't getting any form of response or feedback from any applications. Christina is very candid and open about just how difficult a period this was and how she started to doubt herself and have a lot of negative thoughts, wondering if she was being overlooked because of her age or because of career choices she had made. However, Christina finally secured an Internship and grabbed the opportunity with both hands. Coming to the end of her first year in HR she explains what she has learnt and how she has developed her skills and knowledge. This is a superbly helpful discussion for anyone looking to enter the HR profession covering the highs and the lows! I hope you enjoy listening.Support the show

The two men discuss how one's expression of anger can change over the course of one's life, and they look back on their experiences at San Lorenzo High School from the perspectives of identity and emotional intelligence. (1:15) Ashanti's introduction. (3:45) Jordan introduces himself - an Oakland native, a father, the first black valedictorian at San Lorenzo High School, and an HR Coordinator in the cannabis industry. (5:40) Ashanti recollects his experiences with Jordon as his teacher at San Lorenzo High School. He remembers seeing himself in Jordon, and how Jordon had an impact on EFC, bringing more young men into the club through financial literacy training. (10:20) Ashanti and Jordon make their masks together. (14:16) Jordon shares the front of his mask - strong, funny, confident, and Ashanti shares his front - hard working, serious, funny. Jordon reflects on what it means to be black in Orange County, while Ashanti reflects on how the front of his mask plays a role as Executive Director of the Ever Forward Club. (18:29) Jordon shares the back of his mask - sadness, anxiety, anger. He shares the good and the bad of how he has learned to convert sadness into anger, how he can be “active” with anger, whereas he cannot be “active” with depression. (22:06) Ashanti shares the back of his mask - sadness, fear of failure, trauma. He reflects on how giving back to young men so much allowed him to avoid examining his own mask. He also shares what it was like to transition from engineering to teaching, and how giving up the prospects of financial success pushed him to strive for a deeper impact on the world. (25:45) Jordon shares his family's bouts with anger, and how it stemmed from being an emotional child. Over time, his anger matured into more calculated responses, and now, he is learning to let go of his anger. (31:50) Ashanti and Jordon further examine their past at San Lorenzo High School. They discuss what it was like to be the first black male valedictorian, and how Jordon forged an identity based around a friend group diverse in identities and points of view. (40:00) Ashanti shares a final story from the day of graduation, before restating his mission to build a space that helps men find peace and navigate their emotions. Finding her way around the language barrier, so that she could live her life on purpose How Alma created her dream job on TV Where miracles happen The Power of Visualization Creating a Facebook group of over 100,000 members Finding her true self & calling by “losing everything” and her journey back from that Alma's journey in dealing with her son's Autism diagnosis Inspiring people to look for the best place in their hearts and their gifts and talents Supportive practices for your life and business The gift of your intuition in dealing with Autism or a diagnosis of any kind Receiving messages from God through written word and meditation Making time for "everything" Being open and guided The importance of authenticity and intention in building an online community Tips for managing an online Facebook community of 100,000+ members In coming from a place that we are already 100% capable, everything else will follow and more... Connect with Alma: On Her Website: AlmaLara.com On Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/almalaracom/ (English) or https://www.facebook.com/alma.lara.life.coach.inspira.crea.transforma/ (Spanish) More about Alma:  Alma has been referred to as “the next Oprah”.  Alma is a real life example of how visualizing success and having the tenacity to chase your dreams can make them real. Alma moved to the USA from Mexico 20 years ago with her husband Carlos with zero English but with a vision and became a host on Televisa and Univision.  They have three beautiful kids. In 2011 she moved with her family to Washington state from Michigan and her personal and professional lives were transformed, after receiving their son’s diagnosis of Autism the same year. Sharing her journey and her compelling story with other families, at work with friends, and wherever she had the chance to do it, gave her the opportunity to inspire others with her example of strength and hope, awakening her true calling in life. Alma realized that she wanted to help families that were going through what she experienced with her son and decided to become a Life Coach and got her Certification in 2015. Her learning experience as a Life Coach gave her the tools to help others as she was able to transform her own struggles with Autism into incredible opportunities of growth and through this process she was able to unlock her dusty memories and dreams misplaced over time. She recently resigned as an HR Coordinator at The Fairmont Olympic Hotel and followed her calling and passion to be a inspirational speaker, transformational coach and author. She also committed part of her time to work as a Family Resource Coordinator at FEAT (Families for effective Autism Treatment) where she is now helping families in this emotional, physical and financial challenging transition; supporting them, sharing great resources and critically important information. Today, Alma is a transformational life coach, an author, a motivational speaker and a powerful mother who is supporting families with Autistic children. She also leads her Facebook community of over 100,000 inspired chefs called ‘Que Hago de Comer Hoy.’  Alma’s personal mission is to inspire others to create the best version of themselves, and to transform lives for the better.
