Matt Bailey is a best-selling author. He's written several books such as Internet Marketing: An Hour a Day, Wired to be Wowed, and Teach New Dogs Old Tricks. He's also the host of the Endless Coffee Cup podcast.    Matt is a marketing expert, trainer, and speaker on digital marketing strategy. Matt is a digital marketing instructor for the Direct Marketing Association and an instructor for LinkedIn Learning. His training content and curriculum can also be found at Rutgers University, Duke University, Purdue, Microsoft, Hewlett Packard, and many other places. ‘   In today's episode, Matt Bailey will share some of his strategies for chasing real profit and not meaningless vanity numbers. He will share strategies about asking the right questions and listening.  We'll also discuss diversifying our revenue streams, learning from our failures, and the tectonic shift that's happening with Google and third-party cookies.   Asking the Right Questions   Matt is very passionate about digital and media literacy, or the ability to understand the tools we're using and to understand bias in information. This was something Matt learned during his journey.   Matt started off studying journalism, but he knew that wasn't what he wanted to do, so he went into real estate. He realized there was a way to promote large commercial properties, websites. Two years later, his websites were getting about 200 leads a month.   He learned coding, SEO, link building, and PR doing all these things for himself. He started learning analytics, which led him to ask why his leads from searches weren't turning into sales. “That changed my whole perspective about what I was doing, how I was doing it, and following the profit rather than following the big numbers because if I had to just ask what's generating the most leads, I would have answered that question, but it was the wrong question,” Matt said.    Matt was getting more than 80% of his leads through search rankings, but none of them turned into sales. He poured through his data spreadsheets, trying to figure out where his leads were going wrong and where his sales were coming from. He found that his sales were coming from articles he had published on real estate sites where there were links back to his site. People were reading those articles, clicking the links, and registering on his website. Those people accounted for only 4% of his traffic but 80% of his sales.   If Matt hadn't asked the right questions, he never would have discovered the right group of people to focus on. He would have wasted time and money trying to turn the other 96% of his traffic into sales instead of growing that 4% that already made up 80% of his sales. Questions that drive us to understand our data can help us understand our business and how to make it more profitable.   Ask, Listen, Understand   Matt said some of the best people he has worked with have been able to do this: asking greeting questions and then connecting them to business acumen. Asking the right questions leads to understanding how a business makes money, what the expenses are, what takes away from profitability, what's the business model, how does it functions, etc.   A key part of this process is listening. I feel like the more listening I do, the smarter I am. Listening is one of the most powerful ways to monetize because we can then position our product to sell, we can understand what the needs are, we can customize and personalize based upon it, and we can address true concerns.   Matt shared a survey he had heard about that was run during COVID-19 about virtual selling and B2B sellers. When interviewed, salespeople were saying, “I have a hard time connecting with customers. They're not as attentive, and it's a more difficult sell because of COVID-19.” However, when they interviewed buyers or people in the lead sales funnel, their response was, “I'm not being listened to. They don't really understand what I need.”   In Matt's early days of sales, they used to play a game when they went to sales meetings: whoever talked the most lost. “If you talk the most, that means you dominated the meeting, and the customer did not talk and express what they needed. You were trying to sell the whole time and you didn't listen,” Matt said.    We should be listening to what our customers need. We should also be listening to our partners, those on our team, and our employees because they often have great ideas that we may not have thought of.   Diversifying and Creating Multiple Income Streams   Matt also learned the value of making money in different ways. When he was in real estate, other agents started contacting him, asking him to put their properties on his site because it was getting a lot of traffic.    “That taught me very early [that] I can make money through many other ways,” Matt said. “Putting up a website and [having] other people pay you to put their stuff on it, that takes very little work at all. . . . One of those things I learned is that with the internet, with all these things, there are many different ways to develop multiple income streams.”   Are there different ways we could be diversifying our revenue streams? Sometimes we put ourselves in boxes, saying, “This is the way it's always been done, so that's the way I have to do it.” But that's not true. Experimenting and thinking outside that box may lead us to more success.   We can ask our customers what other needs they have or what other products or services they would be interested in. For example, a business that sells food may find out from their customers that they're interested in recipes they can use to cook their food.    We can also ask ourselves what our competitors have done to expand their revenue streams, and we can look to businesses outside our industry as well to see how they have brought in revenue in different ways, and then apply those lessons to our industry and business.   Learning from Failures   Whenever we fail or make mistakes, it can damage us and our confidence, but Matt likes to look at his past failures as learning experiences.   He was let go three times from three different jobs because of financial cutbacks. It was hard because those organizations were telling him they didn't need him. “It's funny because I look back on that now as the best thing that ever could have happened,” Matt said.    From that experience, he realized he is more secure now working for himself on something he built and has control over than working for a Fortune 500 company. He said, “It's really a lot of things that you learn from that just really turn you into who you are.”   When we're looking back at our past mistakes, instead of being ashamed we can ask questions like, “What did I do wrong?” and “What can I do differently next time?” to help us learn from our mistakes.    Tectonic Shift: Google and Third-Party Cookies   When I asked Matt what the biggest tectonic shift he's seeing is, he said it is the shift Google is making with third-party cookies. Google is eliminating third-party cookies, which isn't necessarily a bad thing because these third-party cookies have been responsible for billions of dollars of ad fraud.   Google is consolidating the total ad revenue being spent online. Matt said, “If you want to reach a certain audience, you've got to go through Google. And the way Google's doing it is they're making themselves the owner of all first-party data of anyone who has a Google account.” It will be interesting to see how this plays out.   Key Takeaways   Thank you so much Matt for sharing your stories and insights with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode:   We should be asking great questions that will give us actionable answers to grow our business.  By asking, listening, and understanding our customers we will understand our business better, know what our customers truly need, and be able to make much better, informed decisions.  There are many ways to create diversified revenue streams. Being open to new ideas and thinking outside the box can help us grow our revenue, and give our business more stability. We should see our failures as opportunities to learn and grow. They are necessary steps along our path to success.    Connect with Matt   If you want to learn more about Matt or connect with him, you can find him on LinkedIn or check out SiteLogicMarketing.com to learn more.    Want to be a Better Digital Monetizer?   Please follow these channels to receive free digital monetization content:   Get a free Monetization Assessment of your business Subscribe to the free Monetization eMagazine. The Power of Picking Yourself

No one picked me to become a professional mountain biker or to start a podcast. No one picked me to become a speaker where I've been on stages for entrepreneurs, tech gurus, and other athletes. No one picked me to write for dozens of publications over the years. Seth Godin, an author, marketer, speaker, and businessman said, "No one is going to pick you. Pick yourself." I recently was listening to the NoMeatAthlete Radio where founder, author, and ultrarunner Matt Frazier was talking about making the NYT Bestsellers list with his co-authored new book: The Plant-Based Athlete. He talked about wanting the outcome of making the list, but already feeling successful before making the list because of the strong impact the book had on the world and to help serve his purpose. You can still want the desired outcome, but at the same time, you can also find joy and fulfillment without "making a list" or getting the validation from someone else that you are good or impactful. He also talked about starting his blog and the "pick yourself" mentality he learned from Seth Godin who mentored him. I've been trying to describe those exact words for years, but could never find an eloquent way to say it. Pick yourself. If Matt didn't decide to start writing, the thousands (and maybe even hundreds of thousands) of lives would never have been positively affected. To do the thing- the thing you are dreaming of, you often just have to start. Imposter syndrome makes us think things like, "who am I to write an article, who am I to try to finish a marathon, who am I to become a World Champion?" It takes courage to believe in yourself and believe in your dreams because if you're focused on outcomes, you could come up short.  Let's go down that path. What if you DO come up short? What if you never make the NYT list? What if you never stand on a podium? Does that mean that all the work you've done was worthless? Most people would say no.  It's the person and identity you become on the way there. The challenges and big dreams are the most important, regardless if someone else or society "picks you" to say you are great.  The challenges and big dreams are a big part of what gives life substance and meaning. That's why we like to push ourselves and we feel proud of what we did. But let me tell you a secret. I've always wanted to be picked.  It's part of being human to want to belong and want people to like you.  Growing up, I was never one of the cool kids. I desperately wanted the popular kids to like me and invite me to hang out with them. I wasn't even one of the "cool kids" in the band.  Instead of picking me to be a cool kid, the cool kids picked ON me constantly.  No matter what my level of success (I graduated 3rd in my large graduating class, was one of the top tennis players in my school, and was the top flute player in the band from grade 10 on), I still didn't feel confident. I still wanted nothing more than someone to pick me. It wasn't until I decided to train for a marathon when I was 17 that I finally started to care less about fitting in with others.  This was a different goal that I set- one that wasn't what someone else expected of me. I didn't know anyone who had ever run a marathon.  Running taught me to become my own best friend.  Going to the gym every day and getting a job also got me out of the limited bubble of the kids at school. I started to like myself and as a result, others started to like me more too. When I chose myself- to do things for me and not because someone else in my family did it or I thought it's what I needed to do to "be cool," things started changing. The "cool kids" at school became more interested in me. But I wasn't interested in them anymore because I didn't need them. That was the first time I picked myself. Over the years, I had to keep picking myself. It's how I've built my career. It happened again when I became a professional mountain biker. I wished a big team would PICK me so I could have support.  I wanted to feel cool and validated that I had the whole team set up at races, be wearing the T-shirts of a famous team.  But let me tell you- that never happened.  If I had continued to wait for a team to pick me or someone "important" to believe in me, I probably would have kept that ceiling over my head- that I am not good unless someone picks me. In 2013, I stopped waiting to get picked and I picked myself. I went and got all my own sponsors on my own and made my own program. I finally was a professional, getting paid to ride my bike and I got to choose where and how I raced. I picked myself. Do I still wish one of those heavily supported teams that get higher visibility in the media? Sure.  But the things I've learned about business, about writing proposals, negotiation, finding contacts, networking, and all the other things I've built because of it are invaluable. I'm not saying you can't do those things if you are on a big team, but this was the only path for me and I'm grateful. The same goes for writing! I wanted the media to pay attention to what I was doing- the adventures and crazy races in places most people have never ridden a bike.  You could argue it was for ego and that is definitely part of it. But more so, I wanted to share the message and example that you are far more capable than you ever imagined. I wanted to share how I would do some of these events because they help bring value to daily life as well.  But that wasn't happening either. I picked myself again. I decided instead of waiting for media to cover me, I'd cover it myself. I would write about my own adventures (and fortunately, all these publications wanted to pay me and publish my stories).  Of course I still wish the media would pick me and write about what I'm doing, but it doesn't happen often.  I so badly wanted to be on the cover of a bike-related magazine, but instead, my photography made it on the cover of a magazine just last year. No one picked me to start a podcast or told me they would help me produce it. In fact, I had the audacity to send a message to one of the bigger podcasts (at the time) asking if I could come on the show. The podcast host said yes and I couldn't believe it! I kept following up, and they never responded to me again. Instead of saying no, they said yes and then ghosted me.  That did not feel good.  I asked myself, "why did I want to go on the show?"  The answer is that I felt I had important things to share, but I realized by starting my OWN podcast that I not only could share my own thoughts, but I could create a space for others too!  Would it ever have the reach of one of the bigger podcasts? Probably not, but the ripple effect of impacting even just one person is massive and more than you know! I also picked myself with public speaking. People ask how I started. I put a tab on my website for speaking and I started going to all the REIs wanting to do talks everywhere I went. Picking yourself also means that you are doing the thing- bike racing, podcasting, speaking, writing- whatever it is that you are doing, for the sake of the activity itself. You might never get picked by the big organizations or things society deems important. I might never get the blue checkmark on instagram (yes, instagram also does not pick me as someone who is notable).  That hurts for sure, but that's not why I do it. Do the activity for the sake of the activity itself. You can want the outcome or validation, but that just becomes secondary. I think about what would have happened if I had waited for a team to pick me, or a brand or producer to say I should start a podcast, or a publisher to come to me first to tell me I should be a writer, or a speaking agency telling me to be a speaker... or the thing that started it all- for a coach or someone to tell me that I could run a marathon at 18.  My life would be dramatically different.  Not only from the deep groove of self-belief that has been etched in, but most importantly- from the lives I have been able to touch and people I've been able to help along the way. That is why I get out of bed in the morning- because I believe we have agency over our lives and it starts with picking yourself.  As you can see, some of my biggest rejections (NOT getting picked) have lead to the biggest amounts of growth and opportunity.  When I feel stuck, I remember that this is part of the path. Feeling stuck, but still doing the work for the right reasons always compounds into something meaningful, even if you don't know what that is.  Being stuck can feel like sitting in the valley fog and once that fog clears, you see the path to the peak of a mountain.  Once you get to the peak? You realize there are thousands of other peaks and some of them don't even have a trail to get there. One asterisk I will include is that no one does it alone. Someone did have to pick me to agree to my pitches for stories, or to accept my proposals for sponsorships. I had supporters who believed in me along the way, but I had to believe in myself first, even when one (not even my family) believed in me. My question for you this week is - are you waiting for someone to pick you in order to go for a goal or a dream you want?  Especially with the times we live in, you can pick yourself for just about anything.  I'll leave you with a quote from my husband, Matt Ewonus, that I think about weekly: "Have the courage to believe you are worth it."

To Judge or Not to Judge Pastor Alex Sands, Kingdom Life Church Series: The King and His Kingdom (Gospel of Matthew) / Matthew 7:1–6 May 9, 2021 Matthew 7:1–6 ESV 1 “Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye. 6 “Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you. James 2:13 ESV 13 For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment. James 4:12 ESV 12 There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor? Galatians 6:1 ESV 1 Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. James 4:12 ESV 12 There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor? When NOT to judge: 1. If you think you know their motives . 2. If you are using your standards instead of God’s. 3. If you don’t think you could be wrong . 4. If you haven’t checked your heart first. Matthew 10:14 ESV 14 And if anyone will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town. Acts 18:6 ESV 6 And when they opposed and reviled him, he shook out his garments and said to them, “Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.” Believers are called to be discerning. If Matt 7:1-5 is a rebuke of hypocritical judging, then Matt 7:6 is a rebuke of naïve , undiscerning acceptance. Christians are to avoid both extremes.

245 | Matt & Megan get International Tax Tips | Dave McKeegan

ChooseFI

To watch the video highlights, click on ChooseFI.com/245 Matt and Megan are a dual military family on the path to FI. Matt is serving in the UK Royal Navy and Megan is serving in the US Navy, making their tax situation unique. Currently, they plan on having Matt get a green card, allowing him to work in the US, while Megan finishes out her Navy career to earn a pension and then move abroad in about seven years. Once Matt gets his green card, he will be taxed like any other US citizen. He owns an apartment in the UK that he would like to sell. Dave McKeegan notes that since there is no wealth tax in the US, Matt will not be taxed on his assets, but once he gets a green card or meets the substantial presence test, he would potentially have to pay capital gains tax on the sale of the apartment so it would be best to sell it first. Due to the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), every bank around the world is required to report US citizen account information to the US Treasury Department. US citizens are also required to report accounts on a FinCEN 114 form and assets held overseas are subject to capital gains taxes. Dave wanted Matt and Megan to be aware that mutual funds held outside of the US can often be viewed as passive foreign investment companies. Any investments overseas should be US compliant as well. Vanguard has a number of retirement funds that report correctly to both the US and UK and are exempt from taxes. Matt and Megan are interested in how the can best take advantage of the US tax system and simplify it for themselves. To reduce their taxes, Dave advises Matt to physically give up his green card once they move abroad so that they can place money in international investments under Matt's name and he won't be taxed like he is a US citizen anymore. As long as their assets are less than $2 million, leaving the US will not trigger an exit tax. Depending on income, where their assets are held, and if they have children, their US tax filing status may change to take advantage of higher exemptions, but they should sell the UK property before filing “married filing jointly” as long as he doesn't already meet the substantial presence test. Matt may qualify for a tax-free UK pension when he retires from the Royal Navy but if he has a green card, he will need to pay US taxes on his pension until they move overseas and he gives up the green card. Dave McKeegan has moved around the world and is currently living in Costa Rica. Costa Rica is one of a number of countries that only tax sources of income earned within that country. As his business is located in the US, Dave pays US taxes. If Matt and Megan were to move to a country with tax laws like Costa Rica, they would not pay income tax to that country on their UK and US pensions. Other countries have income tax rules that depend on how much time is spent in that country. So it's possible to slow travel or split the time spend in a few countries and not pay income tax to the countries visited. Countries that tax their citizens living abroad are the United States, Eritrea, and North Korea. While there may be tax advantages to living abroad and giving up US citizenship, Dave has decided that he benefits of retaining citizenship far outweigh the benefits of not paying taxes and the risk of not being let back into the country. Wyoming is an easy state to incorporate a business and there's no state income tax. If also living outside of the US for 330 days a year, you can be eligible for the foreign income exclusion and exclude $100,000 of income from taxation. Alternatively, Matt could set up an online business overseas and pay Megan a salary up the foreign income exclusion amount and also avoid self-employment taxes. Living in Costa Rica, Dave's children have been learning through a combination of the local international school, homeschooling, and the Simple StartUp entrepreneurial program he's been running for a home school group. He is able to have conversations about business and money with his kids about money and they have become interested in investing as well. Though Dave and his family primarily rented homes while moving around the world, the rental market in Costa Rica made conditions more advantageous to buy. When they travel back to the US for extended periods, they can rent their home in Costa Rica out. Diversification doesn't just apply to a stock portfolio. You can be diversified in passports, income streams, and properties from other countries. Spreading your bets around different countries can make sense. Dave discussed some of the issues expats have opening local bank accounts as US citizens. Matt and Megan have been using Revolut to more easily move money around between countries. Opening up a Roth IRA is something Dave suggested Matt and Megan could do to stash away some tax-free money and have ready access to the principal later. Health care coverage overseas was another area Dave suggested they look into, although health care is frequently more affordable overseas. International policies are always an option to look into as well. The policy Dave has for his family cots $7,000 a year and provides coverage everywhere except for the United States. Another helpful tip Dave has for expats is to always have a couple of different bank accounts to avoid issues with expiring cards or the need to access larger amounts of cash. Opening and using US credit cards and travel rewards is also possible overseas. Dave uses a company called Mailbox Forwarding to receive and scan his mail. It can be a hassle to try and say you aren't a resident of some states anymore avoid paying state income taxes. South Dakota does not have a state income tax and only requires residents to be there one day per year to maintain residency. Go see Matt kick ass behind the drum kit with Sons of the Silent Age at Metro on 1/12/19! We met for vegetarian food from the fantastic Chicago Diner (3411 N. Halsted), a true Chicago institution ("Meat-free since '83!"). Chicago Diner is a great entry point for people curious about vegetarian and vegan food... and for the already-converted. Chicago Diner's "Soul Bowl" is fantastic. Matt had the Trio Burger Sliders (Buddha's Karma Burger, Cajun Black Bean Black Bean Burger, and Titanic BLT). The orange drinks we ordered that we loved (and I couldn't remember the name of) were SPICED ORANGE: House-made orange syrup infused with vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and pumpkin pie spice Sons of the Silent Age: The phenomenal Bowie tribute band Matt's a part of, along with other A-list musicians including vocalist Chris Connelly. Sons of the Silent Age plays a benefit at Metro on Saturday 1/12/19. The Facebook Live recording is merely an amuse-bouche. Chris Connelly didn't need to rehearse the "SHUT UP" part of Bowie's "It's No Game." When Matt was asked to audition for... and join... Smashing Pumpkins, right out of the Filter "Short Bus" tour. The Pumpkins' matinee show at Metro. I was there and helped Tim Meadows from SNL get into the show. The nickname James Iha gave Matt Walker that just stuck. What are the drumming differences between Matt and Jimmy Chamberlin? Matt's time with Filter and current relationship with the members of the band. The Chicago scene as Matt was coming up: "I loved that time... I played in a lot of different bands." Leaving the Pumpkins to go all-in with Cupcakes. There's a Cupcakes reunion brewing... Is it a better environment for an up-and-coming artist these days? The times Matt filled in for Butch Vig with Garbage (including "Bleed Like Me"). The dark cloud that follows Matt Walker from A-list band to A-list band. If Matt weren't in a Bowie tribute band, he'd be in an Adam Ant tribute. Wind up the jukebox! "Everyone loves Matt Walker." Matt is someone who is deeply interested in understanding the biology of aging. Why do we age? What happens to us as we age? What are the things we can do to slow the aging process? How can we delay or prevent the onset of age-related diseases? These are all questions that Matt thinks deeply about, and explores these questions with his research at the University of Washington. He is currently investigating many of these questions through the Dog Aging Project and the compound rapamycin—the only known pharmacological agent to extend lifespan all the way from yeast to mammals—across a billion years of evolution. We talk about cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, healthspan, lifespan, and what we can do to provide longer, healthier lives for both people and dogs. Should you make additional super contributions?

Employers must contribute 9.5% of your salary (up to a maximum of $20,050 p.a.) into super. But should you make additional super contributions? This is a question I’m asked regularly.Of course, like many financial planning matters, the answer does depend on your individual circumstances. However, there are some fundamental concepts that help us understand whether additional contributions are going to help you achieve your financial goals. The power of starting earlySusie is a 30-year-old earning a salary of $100,000 a year. Therefore, she is already contributing $9,500 per annum into super (i.e. her employer’s contributions). If Susie contributed an extra 3.5% p.a. of her gross salary (i.e. $3,500 p.a. or $67 per week), by age 60, her super balance would be 32% higher ($965,000 versus $1.27 million). That is a big reward for a relatively small sacrifice.Compare this to someone who starts a lot later in life. Matt is 50-years-old and his super balance is $400,000. Matt’s salary is $150,000 per annum so his employer is contributing $14,250 per annum into super. If Matt makes additional contributions so that his total contributions equal the concessional contribution cap (i.e. the maximum you can contribute – currently $25,000 per annum), by age 60, Matt’s super balance will only be 13% higher ($845,000 versus $955,000). I think you’ll agree that that’s a relatively small reward for a significant amount of additional contributions (approximately $100,000 in additional contributions over 10 years). The above two examples demonstrate that making additional contributions is a relatively ineffective investment strategy unless you begin making them when you’re in your 30’s. That is not to say that you shouldn’t make them as it is a good force-savings plan. However, it means that you probably need to think of other investment strategies that you can implement in addition to super contributions.Worried about locking your money away inside super? Some people choose not to make additional super contributions because they are worried that the government will change the rules on them and they won’t be able to access their savings to fund retirement. Whilst it is inevitable that the government will continue to tinker with the superannuation rules, it doesn’t mean that we should ignore super altogether. The superannuation environment provides some taxation benefits – so ignore them at your own peril. I believe that super should play a material role in most people’s retirement strategies. Of course, we need to be careful about being to super-centric – particularly for people that are more than 10 years away from being able to access their super. Suffice to say that ignoring super in totality is probably not in your best interest.Repay your home loan, invest in property, or super? It is important that you invest in the right order – as I explain in this video. For some people in their 30’s, making additional super contributions might not be the right priority. It might be more important to repay/reduce their home loan to reduce their interest rate exposure. There is no “one size fits all” solution – it really depends on your individual situation. What else can you do to boost your super?Firstly, there are three things you must optimise to maximise your super balance by the time you retire – as discussed in this video. Assuming you have done these three things correctly, what else can you do to boost your super balance? Probably the most effective strategy (and one that becomes even more attractive now that the government has reduced the concessional contribution cap to $25,000 per annum) is to use some of your super as a deposit towards investing in a property. Your super fund can then borrow the remainder of the funds to purchase said investment property. Gearing inside super is a powerful strategy for two reasons:There is more pressure on the government to reduce the tax benefits that higher income earners receive from making contributions into super. As such, tax-effectively diverting wealth into super (via contributions) will become more difficult to do. Borrowing mitigates this. For many people superannuation is a very long-term investment (20 years and beyond as most people won’t exhaust their super balance until they’re in their 80’s). This long-dated investment horizon lends itself well to a borrowing strategy (if you’ll excuse the pun) because it’s a long enough time to enjoy the immense benefits of compounding capital growth.Of course, there are non-super investment strategies to consider as wellThe point of my article is not to discourage you from making additional super contributions. On the contrary, it is never a bad idea to save/invest monies for the future. However, what I would invite you to consider is that superannuation and any contributions thereof should be only one of many things (tactics) that you are doing to build wealth. Put simply, a balanced approach typically yields the best outcomes (i.e. not being too focused on super and not ignoring it altogether either). If you have any questions about what I have discussed above, I would invite you to contact us.

My Worst Interview Ever

I first met Matt at an investor meeting in Cincinnati, Ohio. A mutual friend introduced us, knowing that we had each spent significant amounts of time in the audio space. Matt on the technical side. Me on the creative side. Also, Matt was carrying a large rubber ducky which made it nearly impossible to not strike up a conversation. Anyway, as it turns out, Matt is a really cool (and smart) dude...and he and his rubber ducky stand on the edge of an interactive children's toy gold mine. Matt is also a burgeoning content creator, who very quickly developed a "worst interview ever." Two of them, actually. Matt Macbeth is a serial entrepreneur, co-founder of Pi Lab (featuring Edwin the Duck), and a budding podcaster/vlogger. He’s also an innovator, visionary, audio expert, and (in his words) "recovering engineer." SHOW NOTES: 0:40 - Why does Matt carry a rubber ducky around with him? 2:51 - Matt is relatively new to the podcast space, and has already had a few terrible experiences with interviews...TWO of which he shares with us! 6:54 - Get a free, 30-day trial of RINGR right now. 7:34 - If Matt wasn't creating amazing, technology-filled ducks, what would he be doing today? 8:40 - Taking things apart and putting them back together again was a staple of Matt's childhood, and he says those experiences changed the trajectory of his life. 10:15 - Learn more about Matt (and Edwin the Duck) by emailing him or by connecting on LinkedIn.

Guest Intro paragraph Matt Jenkins is a Winnipeg, Canada-based blacksmith and owner of Cloverdale Forge. He got his start in blacksmithing by spending college summers at a Canadian national park doing historical re-creations for tourists. He later studied at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina. He now works days as a mechanical engineer and nights and weekends in his own shop. Last summer he took first place in Drawing and Design and the World Forging Championship in Stia, Italy.   What We Talked About Matt followed in his father's footsteps by working summers at Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site as a blacksmith doing historical re-creations for the public. He recalls some of the funniest questions people asked him and the jokes his dad used to play on the tourists. Matt received a degree in mechanical engineering, but also studied at the John C. Campbell school in North Carolina, where he still teaches one week every summer. This year his class will take place in September. He works two full-time jobs. During the day, he's a mechanical engineer for a custom metal manufacturer doing computer aided drafting. On nights and weekends he's in his own shop, Cloverdale Forge, on his family's farm. His shop is 400 square feet and he's looking at doing an expansion soon. Matt teaches classes at Cloverdale and has 4 planned for this summer doing basic beginner blacksmithing. He's tyring to build a blacksmithing community and an appreciation for the art in a fairly isolated location. Last summer Matt won 1st place at the World Forging Championship in Stia, Italy in the Drawing and Design competition. The contest theme was trash cans. His drawing can be seen at http://www.biennaleartefabbrile.it/il-campionato/classifica-2015/ Matt's trip to Italy was part of a larger European trip he took with two other blacksmith friends. They attended a conference in the Czech Republic where Matt won the “longest spike competition” in part of a Blacksmith Triathlon. They also visited Germany and blacksmith friend Gosta Gablick. “It's fun traveling with other blacksmiths because they look at the same weird things that I do,” Matt says. Matt is also a part of an annual art event in Winnipeg called “Nuit Blanche” where artists create and display their works overnight. “We pull the forges into city square and build something,” Matt says. “In our area, the only time you experience blacksmithing is at a fur trading post, so to show people it's not just repair of muskets and traps, I bring the art to them on that night.” Matt uses many outlets to advertise and sell his products including a business web site with a blog, Facebook, Instagram and Etsy. The Etsy site works well for advertising and exposure, Matt says, but doesn't bring in huge sales. If Matt could meet one blacksmith, dead or alive, he says he would choose the “nameless guys” who've been doing it forever. “Everyone says the artistic stuff, but the art comes from me. I want to learn the skills.”   Guest Links Web Page: cloverdaleforge.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/cloverdaleforge/  Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/shop/CloverdaleForge  Twitter: https://twitter.com/cloverdaleforge  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cloverdaleforge/ Stia Drawing and Design website -  http://www.biennaleartefabbrile.it/the-championship/regulation-design-contest/ A Big Thank You to today’s sponsor – Adirondack Folk School, www.adirondackfolkschool.org    If you enjoyed this episode, I would love it if you would support the show by: telling your friends. sharing this episode using the social sharing buttons below. subscribing to the show and leaving a rating and review in iTunes.  Not sure how?  Just follow these simple steps here or watch the short video tutorial, http://youtu.be/rq4OCyRGjHc?list=UUH3MfNZLXlKgionAs6kMT_Q subscribing to the show in Stitcher, http://www.stitcher.com/s?fid=54499&refid=stpr Thanks so much for your support!

The total domination of Zapatera is almost complete. With all of the remaining members at Redemption Island, there is only one chance for a Zapatera to return to the game now. Given the divine intervention that Matt receives in the duels, that seems very unlikely. Be honest. Some of you are starting to think that Phillip has tapped into a higher power too, right? How else can you explain the manifestation of feathers and most importantly the vision that enabled him to find his shorts? Now it gets interesting. Ometepe has to finally turn on each other. Do you think they will take the easy route and vote out Andrea? Will she accept that fate or go down fighting? If Matt makes it back from Redemption Island and into the final 3 against Rob, will he be able to beat him? What is your assessment of this group? Do you think we will have a jury that respects gameplay or will we see another classic bitter vote against the person that beat them? What is your guess for the vote out order of the remaining Ometepes? Here is the merged tribe after episode 11. Murlonio:Andrea, Ashley, Grant, Natalie, Phillip and Rob Redemption Island Duel:Steve vs. Ralph vs. Matt vs. Mike Jo Ann thinks Andrea will Rob's first target.   It took them 7 episodes, but the last remnants of Russell's alliance has finally been eliminated from the game. Stephanie's mentor must have been proud to see her exact another round of revenge in her parting comments. Who do you think has demonstrated the greater apptitude for the game: the group on Ometepe that blindly follows Rob or the Zapatera 6 who threw a challenge in an effort to clean up their tribe? If Matt returns, do you think Rob can welcome him back without risking a betrayal? Who do you think will be the first to flip on their tribe: Phillip, Andrea, David or Ralph? Does Rob have a strong enough alliance to protect him after the merge? Can you see any way for the outnumbered, remaining members of Zapatera to have a shot at winning this season? The merge is finally upon us. If you were playing, who would you want on your jury if you made it to the final tribal council? Here are the tribes after episode 7. Ometepe:Andrea, Ashley, Grant, Natalie, Phillip and Rob Zapatera:David, Julie, Mike, Ralph and Steve Redemption Island Duel:Sarita vs. Matt Jo Ann thinks Mike will be voted out. Stacy thinks Rob will have the majority alliance and will target David as his biggest threat. Who is your pick for the next one to be voted out? We've got several ways you can reach us.
