Finding The Right Business Partner with Damian Lanfranchi, Ep 204

Just The Tips, with James P. Friel and Dean Holland

Something magical happens when you get the right business partner. Plus getting it right can add a lot of zeros to your bank account and eliminate a ton of stress.   But getting that RIGHT person is not as easy as it sounds, because this topic isn't discussed enough.   This week's guest, Damian Lanfranchi, is Todd Brown's business partner, and they've been business partners for over seven years. Tune in to hear what makes their partnership successful and profitable as well as long-standing; and how to find the right business partner for you. Outline of This Episode 4:29 The first try (and why it didn't work) 11:14 The glue that holds it all together 18:58 How to tell whether you should have a business partner 26:15 The visionary and the integrator 31:14 Who's who in the partnership? 46:47 Successful implementation 51:57 Don't get “married” on day one What holds it all together? This might sound a little fluffy, but according to Damian, a business partnership cannot succeed without trust. Nobody's perfect, and you may not always agree with your partner, but you've got to be able to trust them to do right by you and have your back. Damian and Todd have bumped heads during their partnership, but there was never any doubt they had each other's backs. Don't fill the same roles as your partner One top cause of conflicts between business partners is both of them trying to fulfill the same roles. It's super awkward and inefficient, and leads straight to conflict. Clearly defining the roles and responsibilities of each partner eliminates a lot of head butting; and of one partner feeling like they're doing all the work. Tune in for an example of how this aspect of a successful business partnership works in Damian and Todd's case. When NOT to bring on a partner Sometimes people bring on a business partner because they don't want to do it alone. “It's more fun to get lost in the woods with a buddy than to get lost in the woods with yourself,” as Damian says on the episode. But basing your business partnership on insecurity or loneliness isn't a healthy reason to work with a business partner. Tune in to hear more on this, plus other bad reasons to team up with a business partner. Be strategic, not desperate When Damian and Todd teamed up for their second crack at a business partnership--the one that succeeded--it was strategic. Both were running their own businesses, and found they each had a need for the other person's gifts. The partnership was strategic, not desperate, and definitely not based on insecurity or loneliness. A business partnership that doesn't make sense, strategically, is unlikely to go well. Who's the visionary and who's the integrator? Damian can function as both visionary and integrator. But since Todd is pure visionary, Damian serves as the integrator in their partnership. Todd sends him ideas, Damian helps bring them to life. The most successful partnerships operate like this, because it's unlikely two pure visionaries (unless they have identical visions) or two pure integrators will do well in a partnership together. In the case of two visionaries, what if one wants to sell marketing funnels and the other wants to sell sweaters to cats? The company's unlikely to get far in that situation. If you want a business partner, look at partnering with someone who's your opposite in this area. To Judge or Not to Judge Pastor Alex Sands, Kingdom Life Church Series: The King and His Kingdom (Gospel of Matthew) / Matthew 7:1–6 May 9, 2021 Matthew 7:1–6 ESV 1 “Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye. 6 “Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you. James 2:13 ESV 13 For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment. James 4:12 ESV 12 There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor? Galatians 6:1 ESV 1 Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. James 4:12 ESV 12 There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor? When NOT to judge: 1. If you think you know their motives . 2. If you are using your standards instead of God’s. 3. If you don’t think you could be wrong . 4. If you haven’t checked your heart first. Matthew 10:14 ESV 14 And if anyone will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town. Acts 18:6 ESV 6 And when they opposed and reviled him, he shook out his garments and said to them, “Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.” Believers are called to be discerning. If Matt 7:1-5 is a rebuke of hypocritical judging, then Matt 7:6 is a rebuke of naïve , undiscerning acceptance. Christians are to avoid both extremes.

Malcolm X's words sound even better in 2020: "Their problem is our problem”. Ask Mrs. Kadiatou Diallo, the mother of the young Guinean Amadou Diallo, a 23-year-old boy, who had just announced to his mother who stayed in Guinea, that he had now worked enough to finally pay for his expensive university studies in America. Outside his home, unarmed, he was shot dead by New York police, riddled with 41 bullets. His death provoked violent protests in the United States. A year later, the 4 police officers who allegedly took his wallet for a firearm were acquitted. 20 years later, here we go again, an unarmed man is killed by police, again demonstrations across the country, but the oppressors are united, they already paid to bail the murderers of George Floyd out.   It’s about time to ask ourselves: When? When will the African States submit in absolute unity a special motion to the United Nations General Assembly against the police brutality regularly inflicted on Black people in the US? When will all of humanity rise to end the closed-door killings of black people in the US? In Brazil? in many Arab countries? In Africa itself? When? Not as long as the green US dollar can make our leaders red with pleasure.

Our last study of the "eternal judgment" by our Lord Jesus Christ made us reflect on how we are judging now. We might read one verse that says "do not judge" and another one that instructs us to judge righteously. Frank Abel joins Tim Young to discuss these passages and how we have to take them all together to get a balanced view. "Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”  (John 7:24) Outline Intro Many passages about the future judgment relate to how we are judging now (e.g. Rom. 14:10-13) Essential Bible studies are so we might exercise our discernment between good and evil (Heb. 5:14) We have to be wise about how we judge. Contrast between 1 Cor. 4:3-5 and 5:3; 6:5 (1 Cor. 11:28-32) When Not to Judge When you are judging motives (1 Cor. 4:3-5) When you are a hypocrite (Matt. 7:1-3, see also James 3:1) When you are judging outward appearances (John 7:24; James 2:1-4; Isa. 53:2-3) When you have only heard one side of the story (Prov. 18:17; Deut. 19:18) True Judgments God loves judgment To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the LORD (Prov. 21:3, see also Psa. 51:16-17) In judgment he delights (Jer. 9:24; Micah 6:8; bonus Zech. 7:9; 8:16) One of the weightier matters of the law (Luke 11:42) The need to balance love and judgment What is a true friend? (Prov. 27:5-6) How to love your neighbor (Lev. 19:17-18) Loving like Jesus (Rev. 3:19) For previous episodes visit www.essenitalbiblestudies.org and follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

He has also co-authored the book Kubernetes Best practices along with Brendan Burns and is a contributor for CNCF/K8s. This episode is jam-packed with super good K8s content and we talk about the following: Eddie’s journey Learning path for K8s to someone coming from the Windows world(really good analogies to make it sticky) He breaks down the K8s certification - and what it takes to get certified and who should take which exam Future of K8s How to be part of the K8s community Interesting Talent Management system project using Kubernetes When NOT to use K8s Eddie’s journey on how he got to where he is today (01:02) Eddie has been with Microsoft for over 10 years with an open source background all through. When Microsoft moved to the Cloud, he started seeing a lot of the workloads were driven by Open Source projects and he decided to make a career switch by joining as a Global Black belt in the Open Source team. He then moved to the Cloud Native application development black belt team. In his current role as a Commercial Software engineer he does a code-with customers using the open source methodologies. Majority of the code is out there in the open unless proprietary code is requested by the customer. They create reusable code that is resuable across different stacks and different industries. Learning path for Kubernetes to someone coming from the Windows world (05:42) Based on Eddie’s experience teaching and conducting workshops across the world one of the biggest roadblocks he has seen is learning the bash shell and the basic Linux commands. (you don’t have to go super deep). Depending on your background you might want to specialize and prepare the learning plan. If you are a security person - then an understanding of cgroup, namespaces etc are essential. If you are an app developer running your apps in a container - you don’t have to deep experience in those. If an operator you need to go deep dive on topics such as - “run as user” etc. Where things overlap is networking - networking is same in windows and Linux. (for the most part) Once you get the fundamental concepts, move to Kubernetes and he gives a very good analogy of seeing your containers as process in Windows Looks at containers as a process. He compares calc.exe in the windows world as similar to running a container based off an image. Multiple copies of the calc.exe process is similar to running multiple container instances. When we make a functional change example change calc.exe - it is similar to updating image for the container - and rerun the new version of the new calc.exe. Container is just a PID at the end of the day. Only difference is that we can look at the PID tree. Best practices for taking the Kubernetes certification exam (12:55) There are two certification paths for anyone interested in the Kubernetes certification Certified Kubernetes Administrator(CKA) - This one needs very heavy understanding of how the underlying components of Kubernetes work. If you are not an operator and building Kubernetes cluster, this may not be the exam you want to take. In a cloud hosted scenario, most of the the control plane components might be abstracted for you. Kelsey Hightower’s Kubernetes the Hard way is a great starting point. He also recommends Kubernetes up and running. This builds on top of the infrastructure that you built with KTHW. *{: .notice–success} Exam tip : Its all about time management. It’s a 3 hour and you will be using every second of the three hours. Know “kubectl” very well. Certified Kubernetes Application Developer(CKAD) - If the etcd and other control plane components are abstracted for you, and you are someone who is using Kubernetes for application development and deployment then this exam might be the one for you. Future of Kubernetes (19:02) Eventually its going to be like the hypervisor. Eventually the goal of Kubernetes is to be “boring” - it’s a master API to get workloads running. The idea of understanding how the backend components work - should be irrelevant. Customization of the API would be the future where end users extend what it was originally created for. Now that Kubernetes is in the enterprise - understanding the needs and effectively make it useful for large Enterprise customers is in pipeline Be a part of the Kubernetes community (24:30) Be a part of the community and get involved - you don’t necessarily have to be a developer - there are plenty of ways you can help out. How ? Find a Special Interest Group(SIG) under Kubernetes.io website. Interesting projects that Eddie has worked on (31:04) Talent Management system project in a million employee company - Eddie talks about a Data science project which builds real time models using Azure machine learning toolsets. They would then train all of the models them and serve up the model using web services using AKS using a BOT service. Which led to promotion based on data points. And provided a ROI on the talent for the investment that they had made on the talent. When NOT to use Kubernetes (35:04) Even though a lot of progress has been made on the “operators” front - Kubernetes was not made initially for stateful data. Stateful applications as of today still require a lot of work this is constantly being improved on as we speak. But it might be easier to just consume a PaaS service already provided by many of the cloud providers for stateful services Eddie’s advice to keep abreast of all the changes happening in the Open Source world Keeps his ear to the ground and keeps track of all the graduated and incubating project list from the CNCF and understanding all of them work together is something he closely tracks. KubeWeekly newsletter - curated email listing which is sent every week from all over the internet centered around Kubernetes. CNCF meetup groups - he actively participates and is a coach of the Austin CNCF meetups Attend Kube-Con in person or virtually using YouTube. We're talking all about when we invested in something that we wished we didn't and what criteria we use now to ensure we put our money to good use.  In the past, we've invested in writing circles as a source of accountability. Knowing we've spent the money means we need to show up, create space to write and stick to our commitments. We describe the five key pillars to look out for when you decide to invest in a writers group, and we give our advice on feeling aligned and confident in your financial investments.  TOPICS EXPLORED IN THIS EPISODE: Bad investments we've made in the past [ 1:50 ] The difference between being taught at and getting feedback [ 3:55 ] Switching off the corporate employee writing style [ 5:21 ] How to overcome resistance to publishing your work [ 6:48 ] Being around people who talk about the realities of writing [ 7:15 ] Why putting down money was accountability [ 9:50 ] What was missing in previous writing circles [ 10:51 ] The power of beta readers [ 12:32 ] Tailored one-on-one feedback is required for any investment [ 14:44 ] How To courses were never completed [ 16:07 ] When NOT to invest in a writing circle [ 19:22 ] Time is just as valuable an investment as money [ 21:54 ] The five pillars of a writing circle [ 23:17 ] Business bonus of writing communities [ 27:49 ] Practical investment decisions [ 34:23 ] Full transparency and co-creation [ 37:10 ]   Quotable: Feedback has made me a better writer because it has identified blindspots.  ========== Resources discussed in this episode: Ami's Podcast Episode 5 ========== Connect with Ami: LinkedIn: @Ami-Au-Yeung Website: https://www.amiauyeung.com   ========== Connect with Kattie: Online: www.kattiethorndyke.com Instagram: @kattiethorndyke LinkedIn: @kattiethorndyke

Cost Segregation is a tool given by the tax code to real estate investors that improves cash flow instantly.  Jodi Nielsen, National Senior Account Manager & David Deshotels, Executive Vice President of Cost Segregation Services Inc provide real estate investors with the how and why they can utilize the tax code to lower their taxes, save money, improve cash flow.   FREE: TAX SAVINGS COST ANALYSIS  Cost Segregation Study Cost Segregation Study takes an engineering approach to determine what the components of the building are.  Then, it breaks the whole building into its components parts. These component parts are then categorized as personal property, and assigned a life expectancy of 5, 7 or 15 years.   Depreciation Depreciation is the accounting of a portion of the whole that has been used up, and is loss.  This loss reduces its value and is accounted for annually when filing income taxes. It is an expense against income.  Subtracting this depreciation expense from income reduces your taxable income.   Straight line vs Accelerated  Start with a value of $100,000 Pre Tax income of $20,000   Straight line: 27.5 years: $100,000 / 27.5 = $3,636 annual depreciation expense.   Taxable income: $20,000 Depreciation: - $3,636  Taxable Income: $16,364   Accelerated Depreciation: 5 years: $100,000 / 5 = $20,000 annual depreciation expense.   Taxable income: $20,000 Depreciation: -$20,000 Taxable Income: $      0 This shorter timeline accelerates the depreciation and increases the depreciation expense, which lowers the Taxable Income and increases cash flow.   The net result can be tax free income for the real estate investor.  This is especially true in the early years of ownership. This is one of the primary incentives for investors to hold real estate.   Bonus Depreciation Bonus Depreciation used to be available only for buyer or builder of a new property.  The new tax laws allow you an additional 100% depreciate any eligible property if it is new to you.  This adds to the value of a cost segregation study.    Partial Asset Disposition Partial asset disposition allows you to take into account and write off the loss of the unused property when you replace elements of your building.   For instance, if you buy a building and have to replace the carpet. If you expense the cost of the new carpet, you will get to record the expense of the new item, but will not get the benefit of the unused property that you tossed in the dumpster.   Additionally, if you have not done a Cost Segregation study, you will miss out on the additional depreciation allowed in the 2017 tax act.  Bonus Depreciation provides an additional amount of depreciation for qualifying property in year one of purchase.   Tax Payor Status Your tax payor status will determine how much depreciation you are allowed to use.   Real Estate Professional For those investors who are full time investors and do not have a W2 job, they can utilize the depreciation against 100% of their gross income.  Passive Real Estate Investor If you are a passive investor, and have a W2 job, you are allowed to deduct up to the amount of passive income received.  If you have more deductions than you can take, the deductions will be carried forward for future use. This can be used to offset the taxable gain when you sell the property. Misconceptions of Cost Segregation There are some common misconceptions around cost segregation.  Following are a few: Misconception: I can’t do a cost segregation study on my old building.   FACTS: This is not true.  As long as the building is new to you, you are eligible to utilize cost segregation. Misconception: My building is not worth enough to utilize cost segregation. FACTS:  As long as your building is worth $150,000, cost segregation may be of benefit to you. When Not to Use a Cost Segregation Study A cost segregation study will not work for you if you are a non profit that does not pay taxes.  Additionally, if you are looking to flip a property in less than 3 years, it may not be worth doing a study.   The recapture rate of Personal Property can be negated if planned for properly.  If you exchange into a new building, the Personal property recaptured, will be calculated at a higher rate than the permanent structure.  However, if you do a cost segregation study on the new property, you will have a new schedule of depreciation plus the bonus depreciation in year one.   BIGGEST RISK  Each week I ask my guest, “What is the Biggest Risk Real Estate Investors face?”   BIGGEST RISK:   Per Jodi:  The biggest risk is you're sitting basically if you own a building you definitely owe it to yourself op to look at. Because you're sitting on cash that you don't have to sell another widget. You don't have to make another widget. You don't have to find another contract. It's your money that you're just basically sitting on by owning a building that you could use now. And so why not at least look at the look at the numbers to see if it makes sense for you at this time instead of letting more time go by just straight lining. And then also with the partial asset disposition I would say it's very important to take advantage of it. Per David:  We've had plenty of companies that have called us back years after having done their study. And they suffered catastrophic loss be it a tornado or fire or whatever it is and they won't say, do you guys still have those 500 pictures of my building that you took when you did the study? It's like sure we've got those and it's so we have they're building just completely documented from top to bottom one in the other. We'll come out and take hundreds and hundreds of pictures depending on the size of the property to completely document that. So if there is catastrophic loss it's it's a documentation to say hey here's what the building was. Here's all the furniture fixtures and so forth. And it's been very helpful to people in times of crisis. In episode 25, we talk with Andrew Head, Ph.D. Candidate in Computer Science at UC Berkeley, about his research on how developers use API documentation. Specifically, we focused on a recent article he co-authored titled When Not to Comment: Questions and Tradeoffs with API Documentation for C++ Projects. During the podcast, we chat about the following: where developers look for information, how developers manage information in Google’s unique billion-line code base, when it's appropriate to just let developers read the code directly versus creating documentation, what kind of information developers look for in API documentation, the relevance of document generators such as Doxygen, and more. Andrew also talked about some projects he's working on to build interactive tools for developers to share code expertise.

There is NO shortage in God's Kingdom! You can live in the freedom of God's provision for YOU … and for those whom God wants to bless through you. What do you need today? God wants to make something beautiful out of your life … because there's no shortage in His Kingdom. ___________________________________________________________ GOD IS GOING TO MAKE SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL OUT OF YOUR LIFE TODAY UNDERSTANDING GOD'S TRANSITIONS God is going to make something beautiful out of your life today! MUSIC Elijah had a beautiful life because he was beautifully obedient to the will of God. Yet there were a lot of times that he probably said, “God, what is it now? Why are you doing this now?” And yet God had a man here that could believe God, not only for great ministry to the leader of the nation―not only for great prophetic messages to deliver―but he could believe God for the provision of his life in day to day circumstances. He was as much a man of faith in the little things of life as he was on the mountain top. I want to tell you today that there is no shortage in God's love for you, my friend―no shortage in God's mercy―no shortage in God's provision for you today. What do you need today? God wants to make something beautiful out of your life … because there's no shortage in His Kingdom. MUSIC Elijah sure had a running experience with God. Every day he was stretched out. Every day he had to lean on God. God would never let him rest in faith. You might say, “But I thought that the walk with Christ was a faith-rest walk.” It is, but you rest by not stopping; you rest by not retiring. You rest by NOT being upon the shelf―latent as a servant of God―retiring from the field. You cannot do it, brothers and sisters. You cannot do it because God has not designed that you stop being a servant. And if you're on the shelf today, there's only one way off. That's to jump! You can't slide off the shelf. You can't climb down. You have to jump. And when you jump out into the arena of faith, you will obligate God to pick you up. You may be bored today and if so, it's because you're not moving in faith. I want to tell you that Messiah Jesus will thrill the depths of your soul every day of your life―IF you let Him. I've never had a bad day since I've met Jesus. There have been some days that I've had some problems―but instantly as I loosed them to Messiah Jesus―they were no problems any longer because he dissolved them. Jesus wants to come into your life with POWER as He did into Elijah's life to let you be a vessel that he can bless … so that you can be a blessing wherever you go. You see, God wants to bless you, that you may be a blessing. Elijah down at the brook of water leaned on God just as much as he did when he went to deliver a message to the king. And at the brook, when the water ran out, he leaned upon God again. Elijah realized there was a transition in his life. He realized that change was coming up. He said, “God, you sent me to this brook; you sent me down here and I obeyed you … but the water's running out. As a matter of fact, God, it's dry.” And then he realized this was one of those times when God had a change coming up. You may be in that situation today. God may seen very far from you, but he's not. He's not, my friend. God is right in the depths of your soul IF you're seeking him today. And God wants you to know that there is a change in your life from time to time―there is a transitional period―but this is the MOST important time to lean on God in faith. It's at the very time you think God's done using you, that God is getting ready to use you MORE than He ever has before. It's that very time the enemy would try to throw oppression and depression into your midst that God is getting ready to lead you into a powerful work that will smite Satan and flood the earth with God's Glory. DON'T QUIT DON'T MISS YOUR MIRACLE My friend, that's the time you need to realize there's a transition in your life. You see, Elijah was in that period. He probably could have murmured. He could have complained. He probably wondered, “What is it God, what is it this time? Why do you reveal great things to me concerning others and yet in my own life, I don't understand what you're doing many times?” And then the Spirit of God dropped an air of faith into his heart and said, “Elijah, you're in a transition … you're in a transition.” You may be there today, my friend. Listen to God, because God MAY have a different option for your life. God said to Elijah, “Option A is completed, Elijah. Now I want you to go to a widow's house.” And then Elijah thought, “Oh, that's why the rains stopped. I remember I spoke a word of faith to the King and said, there won't be any dew these years ... there won't be any rain these years, according to the Word of the Lord.” Elijah realized he was eating his prayers―that in God's Providence―God had designed the best for him. God wants the best for you, my friend. God wants to bless you today abundantly, so you can be a blessing to the nations of the world … and to everyone with whom you come in contact. Elijah probably realized, “I see it now. God has something new, something different.” So he went to Zarephath. By the way, “Zarephath” [in Hebrew] means “Refinement.” God refines his prophets. God refines his servants. And if you've been fruitful in the kingdom of God, God is going to refine YOU because he wants you to be MORE productive: to bring forth more fruit. Remember, Messiah Yeshua (Jesus) said, “I am the vine. You are the branches ... Without me, you can do nothing. And every branch that brings forth fruit, my Father will purge it.” You see, He's going to prune it so that it can bring forth more fruit. God prunes only those that are bringing forth fruit … so that they can be more fruitful, not just in the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control ... but as the Christian bears fruit. A lemon tree brings forth lemons, a Christian brings for Christians. So Elijah went to the widow's house and he was hungry. He probably thought, “I thank God I can go to a widow's house instead of letting those ravens feed me.” So he went to her and said, “I would like some water to drink.” The widow lady said, “I will get you a drink of water.” And as she was going, Elijah said, “I would like a little bread, also, would you make me a little cake?” She answered, “I can't do that. I've just got enough grain left for me and my son.” As a matter of fact, she said, “I'm going out to pick up some sticks to make a fire so we can cook our last meal. My son and I will eat the last of our meal, and I only have a little cooking oil left … and we're going to die here.” And Elijah spoke something to her that was seemingly preposterous. He said, “Bake me a little cake first!” (Something inside that widow lady let her know that this was a Prophet of God speaking to her.) She made Elijah a little cake from the last grain she had left for her and her family! The Bible tells us that God multiplied that meal. And she and her house did eat many days until the day that God sent rain back upon the earth. Then … God had another option for Elijah! I am certain that God didn't send Elijah to the widow's house so much for himself as he did for the widow's sake. For Elijah was used to living by faith. Elijah was used to having God provide for him, but the widow was not. My friend, God may be designing things in your life, and this change―this period of transition in your life―has some new things that are approaching you in the Spirit. God says to YOU, "I have designed nothing for you, my child, except the best. I want to bless you." Open up and receive everything God has for you today. You may not know what God's doing, but God will never deny you anything (or anyone) ... except to give you something (or someone) better! When Elijah was in Option A at the brook, God provided for him naturally through ravens, but when he went to Option B at the widow's house in Zarephath, God provided for him supernaturally by the multiplication of food. You see, it doesn't matter how God works … just so He works. It doesn't matter whether God works naturally or supernaturally, just so he works. And my friend, God may work differently in your life today than he did last year or last month. He may work differently in your life than he does in the life of another believer, but it doesn't matter how God works in your life, just so he works! Today … God wants to come in and touch your life. There's no shortage in God's Kingdom. MUSIC I want to give you a FREE book that will teach you how to draw on God's bank of provision daily like Elijah did. God has no shortage in His Kingdom. Elijah had vibrancy in his life because daily―moment by moment―he leaned upon the provision of God. How to Market Your Business Let's talk about how to market your business. Everyone knows the different mediums that are out there and the big buzz word is social media at the moment. The truth is it is a fantastic medium to market your business but is it the right medium for you? Now I don't know the business you're in and if I did, that would be creepy because I haven't met you and if I have met you and you're watching my podcast, thank you very much. Share it with your friends. Nevertheless, I don't know the business that you're in most likely so you need to try and work out what's the best medium for you.  Read more about Business Marketing at dorksdelivered.com.au Two Styles of Business Now there's two main styles of business. There's business to business businesses and then there is business to consumer businesses. Business to business businesses don't benefit from Facebook advertisement, but LinkedIn is fantastic. Having said that, LinkedIn is terrible for business to consumer businesses. Now your average business to consumer businesses, you know fish and chip shops, hairdressers, shopping centres, and anything really that has the end user as a customer, is fantastic for Facebook. The reason for this is people jump on Facebook to see and hear from their friends and what's happening around the world, and a lot of the time let's say you had a hair salon and you are advertising on Facebook, people want to see people that look beautiful and go oh yeah, that'll work, that'll look nice for me. Then you can obviously use that medium to be able to bring people into your shop. You might find that depending on the style of business that you have, Facebook and LinkedIn might not be the method of choice.   When Not to Use Internet Advertising A good example of that would be at this moment I wouldn't say if you had a funeral parlour it would be a great choice for either of those. A funeral parlour would be much better off advertising in the newspapers and on ABC Radio and the reason for that is the target audience that they have are going to be more likely attracted to those sources. You don't generally get your 80-year nanas jumping on Instagram and swiping and liking. For the most part, you'd be wasting your money jumping across onto those pages. There is Always Caveats Now having said that, there's always these caveats and changes and bits and pieces. For instance, a photographer. A photographer would make a lot of money if they're doing photography for weddings and so on and so forth. They'd make a great deal of money advertising through Facebook as opposed to LinkedIn, but if they just open up one extra product and they start selling through LinkedIn and that product is professional portraits for your LinkedIn profiles or signatures, instantly they've got a new customer base that their current customers may not be in. That means there's new fresh meat to sink their teeth into. There are lots of different ways that you can pivot the way that your business looks to make sure that who you're marketing to is an appropriate audience as well as an appropriate audience that's listening to the message that you have to say. Make Your Message Heard The last thing you want is to have your message fall on deaf ears. If you're talking to a bunch of people about something that's not related to them, they're not going to be interested. Selling condoms to a nun or any sort of contraceptives is not going to be a sensible idea and I use that analogy because it doesn't make any sense. You can continue to talk to her as much as you want about prophylactics but they're not going to go in and buy them. You need to make sure that you know your customers, you know where they shop, and you know how you're going to go about marketing to them. As I said, there's always that opportunity, such as a photographer on LinkedIn where they're able to make money from more than one stream by just advertising a slightly different product. Facebook is Best for Consumer Business The great news is if you are a business to consumer business, you have this fantastic world of Facebook where there's lots and lots of people and really granular ways to dive in and dissect the exact audience that you want to find your A grade customer. If you're able to do that and you find the person that you want through the methods of Facebook, it can give you a world of customers. You need to make sure though you are standing out enough because when it comes down to it you're advertising, people don't like advertisers. Remember Advertising is Crowded There's more than 300 different forms of advertisement in the physical world not when you're looking in front of a screen, be it your mobile phone or computer, that you're bombarded with every day. That's just when you're walking out and about if you get away from your screens. Can you imagine how many you're seeing on the screens themselves? Thousands, so you really need to stand out. Be a bit cheeky with the way that you market. Have an offering that is genuine and heartfelt and really pulls people in. If you're able to do that, the advertising will work for itself and you don't really have to work anywhere near as hard as what you would have if you're just putting up a post saying hey, please let us do your wedding photography. That's no good. You need to really show a point of difference and a reason for your customers to jump in. You don't know your customers might be cheap asses, they might be really, really ritzy. It doesn't matter, what's important is the way that you position yourself accordingly so that people can and are attracted to that business model. Chose Your Speciality There's a great analogy that I've used many times which is the hot water system specialist. It's a guy that jumps into your house and replaces your hot water system. Now he's a fully fledged plumber but what he does is he specialises in hot water systems and so all of his marketing is around hot water systems and that is his lead in or his trip wire offer, as it would be called. When someone jumps in to get a hot water system, they then have his contact details, see all the other things that he's done, and he knows the face value. The effort and support that he puts into his business and the relationships builds them themselves. He doesn't have to tell everyone that he can replace washers for your taps and everything else, he can just jump straight in and do that and they then have the contact details, he's built the relationship. That's what important. Separate out all the fodder and make sure that the way that you're relaying your message is seen and heard by the people and is landing on the ears that people want to hear. Our Example As an example for us, we have several different methods of marketing. We market as a business to business business, we market through Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Google, iTunes, Spotify, our blog on our website, and they all work for a different reason. That's a much, much longer conversation that would take away from what we're talking about today which is how to advertise your business.   The Final Word If you want any questions answered on how to do that, make sure to send us an e-mail to podcasts@dorks.com.au and talk to you for a few minutes about how we can make your business work better for you. Stay good.

When NOT to Qualify Leads | Coffee is for Closers Here’s something that may (or may not) shock you. Ready? Not all leads should become clients. Just because there’s interest doesn’t mean someone is right for you. And with some prospects, you just KNOW from the jump that they’re not a fit. You might remember a pair of potential clients I told you about a while back. They ran a mid size level accounting r business. But by all accounts, they were broke. And desperate to change their situation. But I knew from square one that it wasn’t going to be a fit. How? All they did was haggle on price. Ask for discounts. Try to cut a deal. And for this high-level CPA program, we already knew what it was worth. No room for negotiations there. So they put themselves out of the running for more than just being a potential client. They also disqualified themselves from earning a spot on the follow-up list. But a funny thing happened last week. After two months of silence, out of the blue they were in my inbox again, asking about our services. Did they see the light, and are they ready to invest in their success this time? That remains to be seen, because they did ask for a discount again! I’ll let you know what happens when (or if) we talk again! But what I CAN tell you for sure is that when we first met, they were NOT candidates for further conversation. Now, following up is vital if you want to close more deals. But then again, so is knowing whether a client is a “not right now” vs. a “probably not ever.” Follow-up is a big investment of TIME. And unlike money, time is something that you’ll never be able to earn back.  So you’ve got to do all you can to make sure that you’re investing your most precious resource as wisely as possible. How do you know when a client just needs a little more time or if they’re on the permanent NO list? On this episode, I share when NOT to follow up with a client, how to see the signs, and why this time-saving measure is SO important. **** Not sure if that prospect is worth a second sales call? Welcome to the next installment of the Leadership Vision Podcast, where we share our expertise in the discovery, practice, and implementation of StrengthsFinder. Today on the show Brian Schubring and I are talking about how, why, and when we use the four domains of Strength. Domains organize the 34 Themes of Strengths into four major categories, which are Thinking, Relating, Influencing, and Executing. Before we get into the show notes, here is a brief overview of each domain. The Four Domains of Strength The themes in the Thinking domain are best used when you need to make a plan, or a new idea created for solving a problem. Whether it's thinking into a current issue or dreaming about how to overcome tomorrow's concerns, the thinking themes can take a thought or idea and look for the best way to move forward on it. The Relating Themes, while probably not the only themes that deal with people (because they're all about people), and have an innate ability to take the human variables into the equation. They look at how individuals fit into the bigger picture and can create pathways for them to thrive. They make lasting relational connections that bind a group together around a cause, idea or each other. The third domain is all about Influencing Themes, which enable individuals or groups to sell the big ideas. They can take charge, speak up and make their voice heard. They are extremely helpful when you need to reach a broader audience, or meet a bigger goal. Finally, we have the Executing Themes which some say are the hardest working of the bunch. They tend to get things done, with speed, precision, and accuracy. They put in the hard work so that when it's time to move, everyone's ready. Show Notes In this episode, you'll learn: What are the Domains of Strength and how to use them? When NOT to use the four Domains of Strength. What to do if the majority of your Themes of Strength are in one Domain. How to efficiently use the Domains of Strength to help your team thrive. Recent statistics on global frequency. RELATED: How The Four Domains of Strength are Organized. When we introduce the language of Strengths to a group, we do so using the four domains. Brian says the reason we do this is that, ..we believe that when you recognize the dominance of one domain or the absence of one domain, that leads to a conversation that would not happen if we did not introduce the idea of the domains of strength. It is also an easy way to help people better understand the uniqueness that their Themes bring at a high level. Subscribe to the Leadership Vision Podcast on Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen. People always ask me, what's the difference between "copy" and "branding." My answer is: There's no difference between copy and good branding. It's copy and bad branding that are so different. Here is why: Good copy is not about you, or your product. Really. It's about the customer. What their life is like right now, and what their life experience will be like once they have your product, or use your service? That's what good copy is about. And good branding is really a condensed description of what your customers experience doing business with you. Your reputation in a catchphrase. Look at it this way. You know what a half-silvered mirror is? Where you can see through one side, but the other side is a mirror. Like you see on the back wall of an interrogation room on a detective show on TV. The bad branders hold the mirror side in front of their own faces. So the customer sees the brander, the marketer. The good branders, and the copywriters, hold the transparent side to their faces and point the mirror side at their market. So customers see themselves when they look back at the mirror. All of this gets back to the topic of today's episode, Including Yourself in Your Copy. As direct marketing copywriters, we have been sternly warned not to write about ourselves in our copy (or, write extensively about our clients when we're writing copy for someone else). That's mostly good advice, but there are some exceptions. I want to dig into what they are and how to use them, today. But first, I want to talk about you… and me… and copy. Like this: Copy is powerful. You're responsible for how you use what you hear on this podcast. Most of the time, common sense is all you need. But if you make extreme claims… and/or if you're writing copy for offers in highly regulated industries like health, finance, and business opportunity… you may want to get a legal review after you write and before you start using your copy. My larger clients do this all the time. Now, let's talk about when to include yourself… when not to… and why. When I say "yourself" here, substitute "your clients" if you're a copywriter writing for a client. When NOT to include yourself - long rants about your life that have nothing to do with what you're selling. Especially bitching and moaning about the injustices of life. This is copywriting, not group therapy via email. - your opinions, on politics, culture, sports, current events, and other external things. Now this can work in a post on your blog or on Facebook, to get people to know you and maybe start a discussion. But it's not going to help you sell anything unless it frames an argument related to what you're selling and your target audience shares the opinions you have that you have expressed in the copy. - information you think will "humanize" the copy, but actually detracts from the sales momentum. Personal info about you that ties into your offer is good – we'll get to that in a minute – but randomly trying to "humanize" your copy by throwing stuff about yourself from out of left field and into your writing is a very bad idea. - a long resume-like recital of all your credentials, degrees, certificates, trainings, and so on. Especially when they don't apply to your offer. You're trying to make a sale, not get a job! When to include yourself - Most important – your relevant credentials (difference between relevant and irrelevant – and why copy is different, say, than a resume or a platform speaker's introduction) - your experience – as it relates to what you're selling. What have you done, seen, learned, that is important as regards the offer you're making? - conversations with other people you have had, regarding your offer Why people want to hear about you (as the product/service provider) - They want to know if they can count on you – if you are trustworthy - They want to know if you know what you're talking about and what your track record is – is what you are selling, something you have competence in? - They want to know if you do your homework. That is, have you really done the study and had the experience to qualify as the expert you claim to be.Download.

If you haven’t experimented with binaural beats, may I suggest you give today’s podcast a good listen? Or perhaps you already have. Karen Newell is the co-founder of Sacred Acoustics, and she and her co-engineer have created a clean, beautiful way for us to put our brain power to best use. Binaural beats help you get rid of ‘monkey mind’, settle down and either get things done, go to sleep, or just relax. And they are mightily effective. The beats pair two frequencies, one in each ear of your (recommended) headphones. One beat is attuned to waking, analytic consciousness … while the other matches the vibration of your preferred state, i.e. a Delta wave, for relaxation, or possibly an engergizing Alpha wave. This prompts the brain to basically get with the program, and supports you in whatever you’re trying to accomplish. In this interview, Karen goes on at length about how the beats are particularly helpful in transcending everyday reality, so you can travel more easily to the other side. Or, say, hang with your divine guidance. How cool is that? In this broadcast, we also play a brief sample of the beats Sacred Acoustics has created. The variety of topics and interests they cover is vast. A favorite of mind: Heart Center.  Here’s what I learned: Actual, real life applications and stories of how people have used binaural beats for healing and spiritual connection Why headphones are so important when using the beats Current research into using beats for pain relief Tips on how best to use them When NOT to use binaural beats (important!)
