Our guest on "Exclusively Van Halen" is none other than the Van Halen tone king himself — Jim Gaustad! A lifelong disciple of the Brown Sound, Jim's obsession with Eddie Van Halen's tone began the moment he dropped the needle on Van Halen I. From gigging at age 12 to reverse-engineering Marshalls and launching the Brown Sound Quest YouTube channel, Jim has spent a lifetime chasing that iconic tone. Now, Jim Gaustad & IK Multimedia bring that passion and precision to “The Brown Sound 78/79,” the first in a limited series of three TONEX Signature Collections. This set dives deep into the explosive sonic DNA of Van Halen I and II — with 50 meticulously modeled tones that feel like the records.

ANGELA PETRILLI Interview - LA Blues Guitarist

ANGELA PETRILLI Interview (with Matt & Rob) Angela is an LA based guitarist who fronts her great band, "The Players" They most recently released a live version of Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter" which will most certainly blow you away! We talked to Angela about the Netflix documentary "Norman's Rare Guitars".  Angela is part of the documentary and she's a big part of Norman's Guitars with her "guitar of the week" videos and also instructional videos teaching guitar players some of the songs she absolutely loves. A new album is in the works from Angela Petrilli and the Players! In this interview we talk about Norman's, Zeparella, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Incubus, Martin Guitar and of course.. Guitars! ***** A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ANGELA PETRILLI Back in 2019 Angela lost her dear friend and bandmate Jennifer Pagliaro from stage 4 breast cancer. Angela was one half of the duo "Roses and Cigarettes" (with Jenny).  That year they created some major buzz with their 3rd album "Echoes and Silence" and a tour in the works.  On March 25th Rolling Stone named their song "Fast as I Can" as one of the 10 best country songs of the week. But in a heartbreaking and tragic turn of events, Pagliaro—who had been fighting off cancer for years—passed away the very next day. She was just 35. For the better part of a year, the grieving Petrilli put down her guitar, left L.A. behind and set out across the world. She traveled to Nashville, New York, Paris and Italy, eventually making it as far as Australia. Along the way, she spent a lot of time on the ocean, where she was able to find some peace and clarity. As she began to heal, she could feel her muse calling once again. Finally back home in L.A., she reached out to some musician friends and booked a bar gig under the name The Petrilli Players. The idea was to shake off the cobwebs, play some covers and have a good time—and that's exactly how it went down. With a reinvigorated sense of purpose, and a band of simpatico players—Brett Grossman on bass, Stephen Haaker on drums, Matt Lomeo on harmonica & backing vocals, Bobby Victor on keys, and Vic Vanacore III on percussion—Petrilli was inspired to start writing again. After several months playing shows around Los Angeles (including opening spots for Billy Bob Thornton & the Boxmasters, The Immediate Family, and a performance at Joe Bonamassa's 3rd Annual Stream-a-thon concert), the new songs felt studio-ready, and Petrilli booked a session at Hollywood's legendary Sunset Sound—the same hallowed ground that has hosted sessions by The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Janis Joplin, Van Halen, Ray LaMontagne and countless others. ************ You can find Angela on FB and Instagram.  Be sure to visit her website : angelapetrillimusic.com for all upcoming shows and new releases. ************ KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found almost anywhere you listen to podcasts including Podbean (host site), Spotify , Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and YOUTUBE Links to more sources at Link Tree - www.linktr.ee/knowgoodmusic  Help support our Podcast by purchasing some cool merch: https://www.teepublic.com/user/knowgoodmusic Visit our YouTube Channel where you can see video segments from all of our interviews.  Just search "know good music".   All AUDIO versions are also available on YOUTUBE! BMG recording artist/singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist A.J. Croce's new 11-track album, "Heart of the Eternal," will be released on March 7. Produced by Shooter Jennings (Brandi Carlile, Tanya Tucker), "Heart of the Eternal" will feature a selection of songs that journey from psychedelia to Philadelphia soul to Latin-infused jazz-pop. Croce, son of legendary singer/songwriter Jim Croce, has toured with/collaborated with such legends and luminaries as B.B. King, Willie Nelson, Ray Charles, Leon Russell, Allen Toussaint, Neville Brothers, Bela Fleck and Ry Cooder, to name a few, all while building up an acclaimed catalog that blurs the boundaries between blues, soul, rock & roll, Americana, and much more. In conjunction with "Heart of the Eternal," Croce's upcoming yearlong "Heart of The Eternal Tour" will kick off nationwide on February 20 at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, through April 6 at the Opera House in Lexington, Kentucky (check A.J.'s website and local listings for additional performances to be announced in 2025). Tickets can be purchased for the "Heart of The Eternal Tour" at www.ajcrocemusic.com  "Heart of the Eternal" is the latest collection of Croce's songwriting and heart-on-sleeve emotion -- the follow up to his critically lauded cover album "By Request" -his first original body of work since 2017's "Just Like Medicine," which was hailed as "brilliant" by No Depression and a "fluid expression of sorrow and gratitude" by Pop Matters. Says Croce: "I've always felt that music is the heart of our humanity. It's the purest way to connect to one another. Every songwriter I've ever met has told me that they don't know where their greatest songs have come from. Maybe it's our dreams or subconscious that allow us to draw from that eternal well of creativity. I don't know the answer but I'm always looking for it. While stylistically diverse, this album is my search for the heart of the eternal." Recorded at the Sunset Sound in Los Angeles, California, Croce's 11th studio album features bassist David Barard (a Grammy-winner who performed with Dr. John for nearly four decades), drummer Gary Mallaber (whose credits include Van Morrison's Moondance and Tupelo Honey), and guitarist James Pennebaker (Delbert McClinton, Jimmie Dale Gilmore). The album was completed during Croce's downtime from his ongoing "Croce Plays Croce" tour-a widely celebrated run in which he performs classic songs from his late father Jim, along with his own material and a number of specially curated covers.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Singer Songwriter Charley Crockett is such an authentic artist. He has lived one hell of a life to write about at 39 years old, so maybe thats why and how he has written and released 15 albums of songs which he tours around the globe performing. It wasn't always the 'big stage' for Charley, he was homeless for many years and busking on the streets to survive, not to mention he also was a marijuana farmer who spent some time in Jail. Hailing from a small poor city in South Texas provided little opportunity, but Charley always had one constant in his life... and that was music. Even the music of Bill Withers, which when Charley found out that Bill had recorded his amazing debut album "Just As I Am" here at Sunset Sound, he knew he had to record there too. Allen began his Ocean Way Recording in a garage in Santa Monica, California, in 1968, as a place to showcase his custom monitors. From these humble beginnings the empire expanded to include partnering with Bill Putnam and acquiring his United Recording Studio in Hollywood, and building state of the art recording facilities in Nashville, St. Barths, and nearby Sherman Oaks. The Ocean Way "brand" also includes Allen's high-end (and excellent sounding) monitors, a unique and affordable microphone, excellent UAD plug-ins, drum samples, and even an iPad/iPhone app. Allen is also well known for being a meticulous engineer/producer, having worked with such artists as Phil Collins, Green Day, Eric Clapton, Faith Hill, Wynonna Judd, Beck, Mary J. Blige, Ry Cooder, Joni Mitchell, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, André Previn, Michael Jackson, and Frank Zappa. He's also well known for leading the charge on reclaiming classic tube mics and gear that was being abandoned in the '80s; he has probably listened to, and evaluated, more microphones than most of us ever will. Having owned Record One Studio in the hey-day of recording, Allen was very open about the Michael Jackson sessions as well as selling the establishment to Rap Mogul Dr. Dre Allen has since sold Ocean Way Recording Studio as well and is now fully engulfed in the speaker game. Writing a record while her mother was dying from dementia, recording while navigating a world of pandemic and protests, and trying to finish anything while teaching her kids from home during a “Safer at Home” order were just a few more elements to add to her already colorful story of personal perseverance. Cindy tells it like it is – the Truth with a capital “T.” As Cindy says, “I can't pretend that everything's ok, because it's not. But, I always see the light – in you, in me, in the world that was created from it. My journey in this body is about finding it, sharing it, becoming it. It's a struggle. It's painful. It's delightful. It's ecstatic.” While the Angels Sigh is at once a musical affirmation of personal power and grace and an acceptance of human weakness and fallibility. Cindy Alexander has written a songbook for the sandwich generation, with wisdom for millennials, and gratitude to the generations that came before her.It took two years to curate the song list with executive producer and label co-founder, Kirk Pasich. “It was two years of me digging deep, during a dark time, to believe in myself and my musical mission, even if others did not,” Cindy explains. “I committed to sharing my truth and my passion, to work with people who could help me manifest my vision, and seized the opportunity to create without being edited, censored, or silenced. I am so very blessed that Blue Élan Records gave me that opportunity.”By late 2019, Cindy Alexander sat in Sage & Sound Studio with a dream team of musicians, led by producer/bass player Sean Hurley and producer/drummer Victor Indrizzo. The first song they tackled was “Try Try Try,” a co-write with Cindy's career-long collaborator, Grammy award-nominated producer, and songwriter, David Darling. The song is about trying to connect and reignite the passion when life gets in the way and distracts us from what really matters. While writing the song, a distracted Cindy had fallen and broken her elbow and wrist while running to make a meeting (“at least I feel alive…bleeding from a break”). It was Kirk's idea to record a second “live” version of the song (all players in one room in one take) as an acoustic ballad, turning a sexy bar burner into a trippy, hypnotic siren song.“Room at the Bottom,” a tongue in cheek ode to the down and out musician, as well as an answer to Tom Petty's “Room at the Top,” was built around a signature guitar lick by David Levita (Alanis Morissette, Lana Del Rey, Sheryl Crow) and a scrappy, beat-up piano part by Michael Farrell (Alanis Morissette, Macy Gray), achieved by placing three No.2 pencils on the piano strings to create the distortion.“Broken but Beloved,” a song about impermanence, was recorded with Grammy award-winning producer and engineer Ross Hogarth at Sunset Sound. It was the last in-person session before the Los Angeles lockdown order took effect in March 2020. Cindy's dear friend and touring buddy, Michael Bacon (one-half of the Bacon Brothers and award-winning composer) contributed cello from his studio in New York. After recording his part, he sent Cindy a note, in which she found the title of her new record:“When I write my ‘Remediation Practices for Enduring the Pandemic,' chapter 2 will read 1. Get an amazing lifelong friend who's got Beverly Hills chops but keeps it real. 2. Have her write a beautiful song. 3. Have her ask you to put 1,000,000 cell parts on it. 4. Do that. Title of the album: ‘While the Angels Sigh.'”Tracks were transferred back and forth throughout the 2020 quarantine between home studios and finally finished up in Cindy's bedroom at her new home in Big Sur.

When You're Through Thinking, Say Yes is the seventh studio album released by American rock band Yellowcard on March 22, 2011 under Hopeless Records. The album has received positive reviews. The album's title comes from a text message sent to a girl by lead singer Ryan Key. Later in the year, the band released an acoustic version of the album. In July 2010, rumours surfaced that Yellowcard, who had been on a two-year hiatus, would be reforming. In August, Yellowcard announced they would be returning from their hiatus and would be working on a new album for independent label Hopeless Records. Following the band's reformation, they immediately began working on their new album. Ryan Key, who had previously been in a small project with Reeve Oliver vocalist/guitarist Sean O'Donnell (who was chosen as Pete Mosely's replacement after he declined to return) called "Big If", confirmed that some of Big If's songs were going to be reworked by Yellowcard and included on the new album. Sessions for When You're Through Thinking, Say Yes were held at Sunset Sound and The Casita, both in Hollywood, California, in October and November 2010, with producer Neal Avron. He handled recording with engineer and Pro Tools operator Erich Talaba; they were assisted by Morgan Strattton at Sunset. Avron mixed the recordings at Paramount Recording Studios in Holly, with assistance from Nicolas Fournier. Ted Jensen mastered the album at Sterling Sound. While in the studio, they released a number of video updates. Some of the studio updates were shown originally on Rock Sound magazine's website. In this episode, I talk about one of my favorite bands of all time, Yellowcard. Ocean Avenue is their most recognized album and today we take an inside look at the album, the band, and the stories surrounding it. I was fortunate to really know these guys during this time in their lives and there's so much more to this album than meets the eye! Ocean Avenue is the fourth studio album by American rock band Yellowcard. It was released on July 22, 2003, through Capitol Records. After touring to promote their third studio album One for the Kids in 2001, the band signed to the label in early 2002. Following this, bassist Warren Cooke left the band in mid-2002, and was replaced by Inspection 12 guitarist Peter Mosely. In February and March 2003, the band recorded at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California, with Neal Avron. Ocean Avenue is a pop-punk and punk rock album, which was compared to Blink-182 and Simple Plan. Before Yellowcard's promotional tour of Ocean Avenue, Mosely was replaced by Alex Lewis. Yellowcard appeared on the Warped Tour, during which "Way Away" was released as the album's lead single on July 22, 2003. The band went on a club tour of the United States, before going on tour with Less Than Jake and Fall Out Boy. "Ocean Avenue" was released as the second single on December 16, 2003. Lewis was kicked out the band and replaced by Mosely before a co-headlining tour with Something Corporate and a stint in Europe. "Only One" was release as the third single in June 2004; they toured Europe, Australia, and Japan. "Believe" was released as the fourth single in September 2004, which was followed by a US tour.
