"There is nothing quite like the real thing." Broadcasting live from the breathtaking heights of the Bear Shadow Music Festival in Highlands, North Carolina, Jrodconcerts: The Podcast sits down with a true renaissance man and the ultimate living defiance to the modern music machine: the uniquely brilliant Charley Crockett. As one of the most prolific and uncompromising artists of our generation, Charley has spent the last decade single-handedly redefining what it means to be independent in the roots and Americana landscape. He doesn't just preserve the soul of American music—he moves it forward entirely on his own terms. In fact, he recently shocked the entire industry by dropping a surprise independent album, Clovis, just weeks after releasing his 20-song epic, Age of the Ram, and then boldly pulling it from streaming platforms to protect his precise artistic vision from major-label constraints. In this deep, high-fidelity conversation, host Jamie sits down backstage with Charley to break down the philosophy behind that relentless, rogue drive. They dive into why physical touring is the single, solitary weapon left to beat artificial intelligence, how he trained himself to be completely "unreasonable" with his standards to protect his inner peace, and the raw creative friction it took to craft Age of the Ram hand-in-hand with Shooter Jennings at Sunset Sound. Charley also pulls back the curtain on his legendary decision to turn down every major record deal on his rise to the top, and reveals what truly drives his "WHY" today. Skip the corporate noise and tune into a masterclass in autonomy, creative warfare, and cultural impact. __ Inside the Episode: The Human Breakthrough: Why standing on a stage in front of a breathing crowd is the only way to defeat the efficiency of AI. The Inner Blueprint: Training yourself to reject outside expectations and protect your artistic timeline. The Trailer Hook: The reality behind turning down every record deal to maintain pure freedom. Creative Friction at Sunset Sound: Navigating intense collaboration with Shooter Jennings on a 20-song masterpiece. The Ultimate "WHY": What keeps one of the hardest-working men in music moving forward today. https://mattaxton.comBioIf you live in the United States, there's a good chance that Matt Axton and his band, Badmoon,will be coming to a town near you. That is a very good thing.Axton's group delivers a sound that is equal parts classic rock, country, rock & roll, and soul. Inother words, as Axton puts it: “Americana with a capital A.” With 200+ shows performed lastyear, and a full slate on deck for 2026, they might be the hardest working band in the genre.Now comes the release of Axton's newest EP, Same Old Story. Recorded in Los Angeles aticonic Sunset Sound, it features five songs combining funk, soul, and country and is availableon streaming platforms and on vinyl.“Muscle Chops” is the lead single. An opening funky rhythm guitar intro leads into aguitar/bass/drums/organ riff that sounds tighter than a brand new pair of cowboy boots. Axton'sbaritone voice is a deep growl.You got some voodoo on your mojoYou got something funky up on your soulA Hammond-B3 organ solo comes on like Al Kooper after the second chorus, fingers dancingand building to a climax, followed by Taylor Kropp's screaming lead guitar in the middle eight.This is a band fully prepared to rock the house.That Axton leads a band of killer musicians is not a surprise to anyone who has followed thesinger-songwriter's career. His family's musical pedigree is untouchable. Grandma Mae BorenAxton helped discover Elvis Presley and co-wrote the million-selling “Heartbreak Hotel,” movingto Nashville where she helped launch the careers of titans like Willie Nelson and Garth Brooks.His father, Hoyt Axton, was an entertainment icon penning hits for the Kingston Trio, Three DogNight, Steppenwolf, and Ringo Starr. His mother is also a professional musician, and whenHoyt's band toured the country it was a family affair. Matt says, “Mom had me sitting on thepiano since I was a baby.”Suffice it to say that Matt Axton grew up steeped in music, but that doesn't mean he takes hardwork for granted. He says, “I come from a legacy family, but you still have to walk the walk.”Walk the walk he does. He started playing the guitar seriously in college following an injury thatended a college athletic career. Since then, Axton has written over 350 songs. A few of theseare likely to appear on an upcoming full-length album, planned for a week-long recordingsession later this year in Tulsa.Axton and Badmoon have just completed a West Coast tour, and are soon to hit the road againfor Oklahoma for a residency at The Colony and a week-long recording session. April kicks off aswing up into the Mountain West, including Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Washington, andOregon. In August and September the band goes to Nashville and the Northeast.If it sounds like a busy schedule, there's more: Axton also runs the monthly Americana Joyconcert series in Los Angeles and the annual Tahoe Joy music festival in his home town ofTahoe City. But there's no rest for the wicked, nor for musicians trying to improve the world byspreading mountain soul rock and roll from coast to coast, one listener at a time.Axton says, “Making any kind of impact in the world — making it a little better, a little better-sounding — that's the dream.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/creator-to-creators-with-meosha-bean--4460322/support.

Life of the Record
The Making of Z by My Morning Jacket - featuring Jim James

Life of the Record

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 22, 2026 97:46

For the 20th anniversary of the fourth My Morning Jacket album, we take a detailed look at how it was made. The band originally formed in 1998 in Louisville, Kentucky by Jim James, Johnny Quaid, Tom Blankenship and J. Glenn. After signing with Darla Records, they released their debut album, The Tennessee Fire in 1999. Danny Cash joined on keyboards before the release of their second album, At Dawn, in 2001. Patrick Hallahan took over on drums as they signed to ATO Records. Their third album, It Still Moves, was released in 2003. At this point, Johnny Quaid and Danny Cash decided to leave the band so they held auditions and recruited Bo Koster and Carl Broemel. For their fourth album, they hired producer John Leckie and began recording outside of their home studio for the first time. Z was eventually released in 2005. In this episode, Jim James describes this pivotal moment for the band when they were challenging themselves by recording outside of Louisville with a seasoned producer. By working with John Leckie, they were able to rely on his expertise in the studio and push themselves in a new direction sonically. He discusses how their early characterization as a southern rock band made him want to evolve musically and try new approaches by incorporating synthesizers and drum machines. He also shares how he was experiencing depression at the time and struggling after the suicides of two of his close friends, Tim Cushing and Aaron Todovich. With the pressure of trying to make a great record mounting, he describes how his depression was clouding his judgement as he felt like this might be the last record the band would ever make. Luckily the band was able to continue and Z proved to be a turning point as new members Bo Koster and Carl Broehmel have remained two decades later. From borrowing a Juno synth and demoing with a cheap Walmart keyboard, to getting into Prince and Fela Kuti for the first time, to mixing at the legendary Sunset Sound, to calling on friends Andrew Bird and M. Ward to play on the record, to writing abstractly about the state of the world, to using music as an outlet for anger, to the enduring quality of these songs that continue to make the MMJ setlists, we'll hear the stories of how the album came together.

ANGELA PETRILLI Interview (with Matt & Rob) Angela is an LA based guitarist who fronts her great band, "The Players" They most recently released a live version of Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter" which will most certainly blow you away! We talked to Angela about the Netflix documentary "Norman's Rare Guitars".  Angela is part of the documentary and she's a big part of Norman's Guitars with her "guitar of the week" videos and also instructional videos teaching guitar players some of the songs she absolutely loves. A new album is in the works from Angela Petrilli and the Players! In this interview we talk about Norman's, Zeparella, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Incubus, Martin Guitar and of course.. Guitars! ***** A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ANGELA PETRILLI Back in 2019 Angela lost her dear friend and bandmate Jennifer Pagliaro from stage 4 breast cancer. Angela was one half of the duo "Roses and Cigarettes" (with Jenny).  That year they created some major buzz with their 3rd album "Echoes and Silence" and a tour in the works.  On March 25th Rolling Stone named their song "Fast as I Can" as one of the 10 best country songs of the week. But in a heartbreaking and tragic turn of events, Pagliaro—who had been fighting off cancer for years—passed away the very next day. She was just 35. For the better part of a year, the grieving Petrilli put down her guitar, left L.A. behind and set out across the world. She traveled to Nashville, New York, Paris and Italy, eventually making it as far as Australia. Along the way, she spent a lot of time on the ocean, where she was able to find some peace and clarity. As she began to heal, she could feel her muse calling once again. Finally back home in L.A., she reached out to some musician friends and booked a bar gig under the name The Petrilli Players. The idea was to shake off the cobwebs, play some covers and have a good time—and that's exactly how it went down. With a reinvigorated sense of purpose, and a band of simpatico players—Brett Grossman on bass, Stephen Haaker on drums, Matt Lomeo on harmonica & backing vocals, Bobby Victor on keys, and Vic Vanacore III on percussion—Petrilli was inspired to start writing again. After several months playing shows around Los Angeles (including opening spots for Billy Bob Thornton & the Boxmasters, The Immediate Family, and a performance at Joe Bonamassa's 3rd Annual Stream-a-thon concert), the new songs felt studio-ready, and Petrilli booked a session at Hollywood's legendary Sunset Sound—the same hallowed ground that has hosted sessions by The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Janis Joplin, Van Halen, Ray LaMontagne and countless others. ************ You can find Angela on FB and Instagram.  Be sure to visit her website : angelapetrillimusic.com for all upcoming shows and new releases. ************ KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found almost anywhere you listen to podcasts including Podbean (host site), Spotify , Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and YOUTUBE Links to more sources at Link Tree - www.linktr.ee/knowgoodmusic  Help support our Podcast by purchasing some cool merch: https://www.teepublic.com/user/knowgoodmusic Visit our YouTube Channel where you can see video segments from all of our interviews.  Just search "know good music".   All AUDIO versions are also available on YOUTUBE! King, Willie Nelson, Ray Charles, Leon Russell, Allen Toussaint, Neville Brothers, Bela Fleck and Ry Cooder, to name a few, all while building up an acclaimed catalog that blurs the boundaries between blues, soul, rock & roll, Americana, and much more. In conjunction with "Heart of the Eternal," Croce's upcoming yearlong "Heart of The Eternal Tour" will kick off nationwide on February 20 at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, through April 6 at the Opera House in Lexington, Kentucky (check A.J.'s website and local listings for additional performances to be announced in 2025). Singer Songwriter Charley Crockett is such an authentic artist. He has lived one hell of a life to write about at 39 years old, so maybe thats why and how he has written and released 15 albums of songs which he tours around the globe performing. It wasn't always the 'big stage' for Charley, he was homeless for many years and busking on the streets to survive, not to mention he also was a marijuana farmer who spent some time in Jail. Hailing from a small poor city in South Texas provided little opportunity, but Charley always had one constant in his life... and that was music. Even the music of Bill Withers, which when Charley found out that Bill had recorded his amazing debut album "Just As I Am" here at Sunset Sound, he knew he had to record there too. Sit back and listen to the story of a "True Artist" and songwriter who never gave up that endured through a hard and turbulent past to do what he was meant to do in this life Charley and Producer Host Drew Dempsey sit down in legendary Studio 3 to have a beautiful conversation on... everything important in life. Legendary Recording Engineer, Studio Owner, Speaker Design, Record Producer & Businessman Allen Sides sits down with Drew Dempsey in Studio 2 at Sunset Sound as well as special guests, 10x Grammy Winning Recording Engineer & Producer Joe Chiccarelli as well as Sunset Sound studio owner Paul Camarata. Allen began his Ocean Way Recording in a garage in Santa Monica, California, in 1968, as a place to showcase his custom monitors. From these humble beginnings the empire expanded to include partnering with Bill Putnam and acquiring his United Recording Studio in Hollywood, and building state of the art recording facilities in Nashville, St. Barths, and nearby Sherman Oaks. The Ocean Way "brand" also includes Allen's high-end (and excellent sounding) monitors, a unique and affordable microphone, excellent UAD plug-ins, drum samples, and even an iPad/iPhone app. Allen is also well known for being a meticulous engineer/producer, having worked with such artists as Phil Collins, Green Day, Eric Clapton, Faith Hill, Wynonna Judd, Beck, Mary J. Blige, Ry Cooder, Joni Mitchell, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, André Previn, Michael Jackson, and Frank Zappa. He's also well known for leading the charge on reclaiming classic tube mics and gear that was being abandoned in the '80s; he has probably listened to, and evaluated, more microphones than most of us ever will. Having owned Record One Studio in the hey-day of recording, Allen was very open about the Michael Jackson sessions as well as selling the establishment to Rap Mogul Dr. Dre Allen has since sold Ocean Way Recording Studio as well and is now fully engulfed in the speaker game. She's helped artists and pro audio companies like Burl Audio, Barefoot Sound, and IK Multimedia, and studios like Sunset Sound, form roll out plans for new products and music releases, develop marketing materials, create email newsletters, optimize social media, launch marketing events, and develop online ad campaigns. During the interview we talked about her career in radio and streaming, why posting consistency is so important, when to hire a PR person, how to become a podcast guest, and much more. I spoke with Nichole via zoom from her office in the Hollywood Hills. On the intro I'll take a look at the new Soundcloud user-centric royalties, and the ways that songwriting has recently changed. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epId: 83550989, backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };

My guest today is Bill Mims, a graduate of Full Sail University in the Recording Engineering program. In 2001, he spent a year in Orlando doing live sound, as well as an internship at a post production facility before moving to LA in 2002 and getting hired by Sunset Sound where he worked his way up the ranks and was an assistant engineer by the end of 2004. He became proficient in Pro Tools, as well as analog tape machines. Between 2004 and 2010, Bill worked with some of the most famous artists in the world at Sunset Sound. Bill left Sunset and went freelance in 2011. Since then, he has done engineering and producing work for many artists. He has been lucky enough to have been a part of many Grammy winning projects, two of which Bill earned statues for (Jimmy Cliff-Best Reggae 2012 and Ben Harper/Charlie Musselwhite-Best Blues 2013). Bill has worked on several films, two of which have either won or been nominated for an Oscar (The Theory Of Everything-Best Original Music Score 2015, Sicario-Nominated for Best Original Music Score 2016). Bill has also worked on TV shows, including Transparent, which has won Emmy and Golden Globe awards. Some recent work includes Mrs. America, For Life, and When They See Us.  Recent albums would be the last few Morrissey albums, Death Cab, and I produced 2 albums for Megan Mullally.
