Read the complete transcript on the Sales Game Changers Podcast website. ALAN'S TIP TO SALES LEADERS: "Sales people need to make time for curiosity. We can't just assume that we're going to go about doing the normal stuff we do and brilliance is going to happen. Make time and even if that means you just start right now with an hour a day or an hour a week and that's all you can handle, make some time. Even during COVID you can get out, explore a little bit even if it's just in a park and as places start opening up. Wander around looking for some interesting ideas of businesses that are getting back and doing business and how those ideas could help you and your organization. The other is I'd like you to get together with your colleagues every week and pose a question that's a curious question that will spark your thinking and as a group, start to brainstorm questions like, "What do our customers really care about right now?" or, "'What if we could create the perfect new product or solution, what would be different?" or, "How could we do a better job of using technology?" or, "What would our amazing no-touch customer service look like?" or, "How do we make our customers smarter than they ever imagined possible?" Think about questions like that as a way to regularly spark your team curiosity."

I've decided to curate 12 book suggestions from some of my most popular guest episodes. My intention is to give you some new ideas and inspiration to help you rock this coming year! If you're anything like me, the New Year brings an opportunity for a fresh start. It's an opportunity to look back at the past 12 months of achievement, learning and growth and to consider what you want for the coming year. I've set some pretty big goals for the next 12 months and I know that these will be challenging. That's because I will have to open up my mind, be coachable and invest in my growth to achieve what I've set out to do. Reading or listening to books will play a big part of my growth as it always has done, and that's why I absolutely love hearing from my guests about the books that they've read that have created transformation in their life. Many of those books I've gone on to read myself and they have opened up new possibilities for me. So, in this episode I thought I'd put a recommendation for each of the next 12 months together for you. In this episode, we’re joined by Rizal Hamdallah, the Global Chief Innovation Officer of Ocean Spray, for a discussion about how companies of all sizes can use innovation to positively impact the food system. Hamdallah recently arrived at Ocean Spray from Tyson Foods, where he served as managing director of the company’s Innovation Lab, an incubation unit designed to rapidly bring new and potentially disruptive products to market. In his current role, he’s focused on a similar mission: helping the farmer-owned cooperative develop new, health-focused products.  As part of our conversation, Hamdallah explained why he’s bullish about the future of personalized nutrition, how the company attempts to “develop and deliver innovative products that consumers didn't even know they needed,” why he views Ocean Spray’s size as a key advantage over smaller companies, and why he’s critical of how some brands are promoting sustainability. Show notes: 1:16: Livin’ That New-Age Life -- The hosts sipped and snacked their way through a dozen new food and beverage products sent to the office over the past week, including CBD-infused coconut water and coffee, cheese-dusted granola, and chocolate-covered chickpeas. Later on, Mike remarked on the number of new hydration-focused powders coming to market. 15:33: Rizal Hamdallah, Global Chief Innovation Officer, Ocean Spray -- In an interview recorded at Ocean Spray’s new Boston office, Hamdallah spoke with Taste Radio editor Ray Latif about his new role with the company, why he views Boston as a key hub for the food and beverage industry, how he defines “innovation” and the elements of an innovative concept. He also explained why companies need to incorporate the “self-centered” mentality of modern consumers into their innovation strategy, why leaders have to “walk the walk,” and why testing and learning must include constant iteration. Finally, he offered his take on a few major food trends, including plant-based formulations, reduced sugar and sustainability. "The more people are becoming authentic, bolder, raw, and real, the more they want more of it because it is more identifiable than when everything's perfect." - Jen Groover How do you become your own brand in the new media? Modern society has its own say for being different and bold. In this episode, Jen Groover shares what it takes to be authentic and to produce massive success in the end. Three Things We Learned Authenticity has various definitions Because of our training, there are belief systems that we abide. But it does not always work. We can be authentic just the way we are in the new media. Unique ideas can shine brightly despite the oppositions, as in the case of Spanx Founder Sara Blakely. Existing ideas have untapped potentials Creativity opens the door to greater possibilities. It knows no bounds. Existing ideas can be reimagined and transformed into outstanding ones. Influencer marketing is leading the way Industry influencers have established a name for themselves in the categories they belong. Nowadays, partnering with them to market a brand has become widely popular. They have the power to reach the information you desire. With the rise of social media and other marketing platforms, people can already choose any information they want. They also get to choose which type of authenticity they want to see or hear from. Despite how rude the language is, people still enjoy the message they receive. As Jen puts it, people can identify with it better when not everything is perfect. Bio Empowerment and Business Expert, Creator of The Butler Bag, Author of “What If? & Why Not?”, Motivational Speaker, Entrepreneur, Spokesperson & Media Contributor Jen Groover has been tagged by SUCCESS Magazine as a “One-Woman Brand”, a “Creativity and Innovation Guru”, and a leading “Serial Entrepreneur” by Entrepreneur Magazine. Jen spring-boarded the Butler Bag's success into an entire lifestyle brand, found at a variety of price points and well-known retailers, which led to the creation of subsequent lifestyle brands, Leader Girlz, and Empowered by Jen Groover. There are so many hours in a day, but we also know that everyone in the world gets the exact same number of hours. So how do some people do so much? My guest today, Jen Groover, knows. Early on in her entrepreneurial career she realized that she had to leverage herself to be able to do more than trade dollars for hours. She does this through licensing, delegating, team building and having the right supports in place for all of her different businesses. What more details on how she does it? She is more than happy to share that with you through her Jumpstart Connect Pop-up store in NYC. Not in NYC? Soon there will be a virtual version online too!   Show notes: Jen Groover is a serial entrepreneur, speaker, author, and media contributor. Jen got involved in the fitness industry straight out of college when she graduated in 1995 but quickly realized that she needed to find some way to leverage herself and her time so she would not be limited to trading hours for dollars. A few of Jen’s quotes from the episode: "Once I'm comfortable I need to make myself uncomfortable again." "Licensing is a huge part of my business model." “I believe Entrepreneurs are a huge part of healing the world.” “Fear is the thing that holds people back the most. The more you can educate someone, the more you can eliminate fear.” Jen is also the author of the book What If and Why Not. This book focuses on the psychology of taking what is negative in your life and finding the positive spin. It was published in 2013. Her second book, #Empowered, will be coming out in the fall of 2017. Right now she is working on her third book, Operator's Manual for Life. Now that sounds like something we could all use now and then. Jen was also recently nominated as a UN delegate to the first ever Global Accelerator for the Global Entrepreneurs Council. For this council, each person chooses a topic that they are very good at and another that they do not know much about. Sometimes a person's ignorance in a certain field can actually bring breakthroughs from the questions they ask. The field that Jen chose as something she didn't know much about was health care. These discussions bring more innovation to the solutions around specific problems. You can connect with Jen Groover via her website at www.jengroover.com. "We Are Often Playing Small To Our Own Potential" Jen Groover From her earliest memories of being tied to her chair as a young girl by “Sister Elizabeth” for being too curious, Jen Groover she knew she was intrigued by conversation and networking. In college, Jen studied education and psychology. During that time she expanded and shifted her approach to creativity and begun to apply it to her work. It just so happened that Jen's first business venture was in the world of fitness. Jen had experienced the high that comes from teaching (after facing her fears of no-one showing up for her first class) and realized that she wanted to experience the energy and high of creating something new and partnered with an existing company to open a gym space.  But that was just the beginning. During this part of our conversation, we also revisit the hey day of fitness and step aerobics. It so happened Gin Miller and myself were the videos she was using for inspiration. I love that this has now come full circle and Jen is one of my mentors and reminds me how to show up fully in the world every day. Jen shares marvelous advice on how to get out of your head and into the world. How to face your fears, value your own ideas and take big action steps to put your dreams in motion. We discussed "fear" and how Jen now has more fear of regret, than fear of failure and I too am the same way. We also talk about the glass ceiling often being our own belief system. Jen talks about creativity assets are dropping out of the sky every day, but it is not until we take action that those assets can be turned into as many verticals and companies as you have time for. I ask Jen about where it is that she finds her inspiration. It was interesting to hear Jen talk about Reebok being one of the companies that she looked at to learn how to create, execute and repeat. It was then at QVC she discovered the importance of telling stories that would sell into people’s desires. It was here that she learnt the art of pitching and positioning for other brands, she then put that education behind her own company. Jen is also an expert at partnering with strong people around her to move great ideas faster and more efficiently. Take a listen and be inspired. There are so many nuggets of wisdom that can be applied into your life, whatever you are doing and whatever your dreams.
