A.J. Foyt: Survivor, Champion, Legend (Volume One, Octane Press, October 2024), an extensive and highly entertaining biography of one of America's most popular, colorful, and controversial sports heroes, is now available for order. Art Garner-an award-winning author and finalist for the prestigious PEN/ESPN award for literary sports writing for his bestselling book, Black Noon-has captured the action on and off the track that led many to consider Foyt to be one of the greatest race car drivers of all time-and one reporter to write that A.J. stood for "another jerk."Known for his fiery disposition and bare-knuckled approach, Foyt's driving career spanned five decades-six if you count an exhibition race when he was five years old. He was the first driver to win the Indianapolis 500 four times and still holds Indy car records for most victories and championships. He is the only driver ever to win the Indianapolis 500, 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the Daytona 500, one version of auto racing's triple crown. He also won the International Race of Champions in 1976 and 1977 and still holds the world closed-course speed record that he set in 1987. "Statistics tell only part of the story," Garner says. "Foyt likes to say, 'I'm just A.J., ain't no different than any other man,' but nothing could be further from the truth. He's one of the most complex and intricate personalities in the history of auto racing, perhaps all of sports." The biography also explores the unique relationship between Foyt and his "Daddy," Anthony Joseph "Tony" Foyt Sr. Although they often clashed-it was Tony who said working with his son could be like "dancing with a buzzsaw"-A.J. called him "the only man I can trust." It was Tony who instilled in his son an overwhelming drive to be the best, teaching him that victory was expected, excellence assumed. And it was Tony who told a crowd celebrating A.J.'s fourth Indy 500 victory that his son had "done fair."Through tireless research and hundreds of hours of new interviews with Foyt, his family, friends, and the biggest names in motorsports-including Mario Andretti, Roger Penske, Al Unser Sr., Johnny Rutherford, Jackie Stewart, Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, and many others-Garner has compiled an unprecedented look at Foyt's life and career. At 656 pages it includes ninety-five photos, some from Foyt's family albums, and fifty-five pages of source notes and index. Andretti wrote the foreword and had this to offer about the tome on the life of his longtime rival: "A.J. fans will love this book. And if anywhere in these pages it says A.J. hates me, I know he doesn't anymore. That was a few decades ago. Today we're BFFs." Asked about the upcoming biography, Foyt said: "I know what I did. I know the fun I had. I don't really give a [$*!#] if anybody else cares. I know I had a wonderful, wonderful life. A lot of heartaches but a lot of fun at the same time. I don't know if I would change anything if I was reborn." With an official publication date of October 1, 2024, A.J. Foyt: Survivor, Champion, Legend (Volume One) is available for order now from Octane Press. Volume One traces the Foyt family from its Eastern European roots through A.J.'s 1977 season, when he became the first driver ever to win the Indianapolis 500 four times.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.
In the 1980s in, Canada, unregulated sex work was rampant. Pimps were known to procure young, vulnerable girls in bars and clubs, and offer them ‘work' in exchange for safety. However, the safety never came, and quickly turned to threats of violence against the girls and their families.Police identified Tony Provo, a suspected pimp who had been seen trawling local bars. To catch him, Canadian police used a unique tactic, and assigned young officer Carol Cooke to go undercover as a teenager, and move through the bars to attract Provo. Carol joined Brent Sanders from the Melbourne studio to share this case and others from her time in the force. This content contains references to mens violence against women. New from award-winning book publisher Octane Press, Trophies and Scars is the profoundly personal and remarkably revealing story of the life and times of NASCAR Hall of Famer Ray Evernham, as told to New York Times bestselling author Joe Garner. With forewords by motorsport legends Jeff Gordon, Rick Hendrick, and Roger Penske, the book launched in March. Trophies and Scars traces all the twists and turns of Ray Evernham's fascinating life. A son of the Jersey Shore, he was dedicated to fulfilling his boyhood dream of becoming a professional race car driver, and by age eighteen, he was banging fenders with good success on the Northeast short track circuit. When his dreams of becoming an Indy car sensation literally crashed and burned, he turned to Roger Penske's International Race of Champions (IROC), before another brutal crash forced him to give up his Indy dream for good. It was time to change careers. As a technical crew leader rather than driver, he developed new skills and strategies critical to building successful racing organizations. A brief, ill-fated, and downright volatile stint on Alan Kulwicki's crew, turned into a "right place at the right time" scenario, sparking a seminal partnership with racing phenomenon Jeff Gordon. They would prove to be one of the most potent racing duos in history. Evernham shares previously untold tales of how the pair led the No. 24 team to three championships in four seasons (1995, 1997, 1998) and an astounding forty-seven wins in just 216 starts, revealing in candid detail how and why their storied relationship came to an end. In which we meet the pioneers of one of the most exciting — and controversial — fields of biomedical research: in vitro gametogenesis, or IVG. The goal of IVG is to make unlimited supplies of what Hayashi calls "artificial" eggs and sperm from any cell in the human body. That could let anyone — older, infertile, single, gay, trans — have their own genetically related babies. As such, the field opens up a slew of ethical concerns. But that isn't stopping researchers from pressing forward. So, this episode NPR science correspondent Rob Stein gives us a glimpse into the global race to create the first artificial human embryos to see how the competition is unfolding. Harry and Rafe finish the story of Columbus and his travels to the New World.Columbus struggles to keep control of the colony in the (West) Indies and also struggles to keep control of his reputation and name. The New World is becoming bigger and bigger and looking less and less like The East with every voyage someone, be it Columbus or the Portuguese or the British or anyone, makes west from the Europe-Africa-Asia super continent. In the end, Columbus dies a man trying to defend his name while the nations of world come to grips with the fact that there are things out there they never expected to find, namely two (2!) new continents and an ocean so big that it covers half the planet. But Columbus lives on in a namesake country and in cities and towns and streets and companies and all sorts of other things all over the New World. A bold and daring risk based on bad data and funded by Spain completely changed the understanding of the world. This episode is kindly sponsored by BlendJet.Use our special link ("bufnagle") to save 12% at blendjet.com. As with any new industry, there is much that is up in the air as far as its regulation, industrialization, and progress goes. Janice has over 25 years of strategy experience and has distinguished herself as a leading clean energy changemaker. Janice co-founded and for a decade served as Executive Director of the California Energy Storage Alliance, where she helped create the world's most robust energy storage market. In 2019, Janice launched the Green Hydrogen Coalition, an educational non-profit dedicated to facilitating policies and practices to advance the production and use of green hydrogen in all sectors where it will accelerate the transition to a carbon free energy system. Tony Toranto is a partner in the Real Estate, Corporate and Finance Practice Groups in the firm's San Diego (Del Mar) and San Francisco offices. What led you, Janice, to form the Green Hydrogen Coalition? What barriers in storing, processing, or converting hydrogen have you experienced since forming the GHC? Why isn't the entire United States in a green hydrogen state currently? Are other nations moving through their governmental systems more quickly in creating a regulatory framework for green hydrogen? Do you think green hydrogen may displace other mobile fuels and their storage? Resources Mentioned: Green Hydrogen Coalition: https://www.ghcoalition.org/ Contact Information: Janice Lin Tony Toranto

A plug-in Wrangler is finally here, and Benjamin and Sami both get behind the wheel to try and make sense of the 2021 Jeep Wranger 4xe. Is the world ready for silent running on the off-road trail? Benjamin also reviews 'The Iroc Porsches,' a beautifully illustrated book that takes a deep dive into the first season of the International Race of Champions and the Porsche 911 RSR that ran it.
As the debut season of the surprisingly entertaining Tony Stewart/Ray Evernham-led Camping World SRX Series nears its conclusion next week, we dive deeper into the rabbit hole of one of its major influences - the legendary International Race of Champions (IROC) - with longtime automotive journalist and former Motor Trend magazine Executive Editor Matt Stone (“The IROC Porsches: The International Race of Champions, Porsche's 911 RSR & the Men Who Raced Them”). As table-set in our previous Episode 173 with former Indianapolis and Ontario Speedway exec Dave Lockton, IROC was envisioned as the American motorsports equivalent of a major “all-star” showcase - pitting twelve of the world's best professional drivers from racing's top competitive circuits in a series of races in identically prepared and maintained cars, in an effort to test participants' pure driving ability and determine the sport's true “champion.” Stone helps us with the backstory of IROC's operational formation - brought to life in late 1973 by racing executives Roger Penske, Les Richter and Mike Phelps in the form of an initial four-race roadcourse series across Riverside international Raceway (three qualifying races: 10/27-28, 1973) and Daytona International Speedway (final: 2/14, 1974) - all televised in tape-delayed glory on ABC's then-dominant sports anthology series Wide World of Sports. Inaugural invitees: NASCAR Winston Cup champions Bobby Allison, Richard Petty & David Pearson; SCCA Can-Am road-race standouts Mark Donohue, Peter Revson & George Folker; USAC Champ (Indy) Car winners Bobby Unser, A.J. Foyt, Gordon Johncock & Roger McCluskey; and Formula One stars Denis Hulme & Emerson Fittipaldi. And the now-iconic sports car initially selected to challenge them all: the purpose-built, virtually identical 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 - all 16 originals of which are still alive, well, hugely revered, and highly sought-after today.
NASCAR has over 30 sanctioned racing series. But one of the most coveted was the non-sanctioned International Race of Champions (IROC). In this episode we investigate why the IROC series went away, why people were drawn to it, and if/should it come back. We also take a brief look at Tony Stewart and Ray Evernham's new SRX short track series. As always we rant and rave about the previous race; this week that happened to be the wild and crazy regular season finale at Daytona International Speedway. We also play True or False - NASCAR Series Edition. We wrap things us with the current playoff picture, our first 4 out, and take a look at the new NASCAR Fantasy playoff format and who you should have in your lineup. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/goin-in-tight-podcast/message
Longtime sports/information technology entrepreneur/executive Dave Lockton joins this week to discuss his managerial adventures in the geographically fragmented and provincially fractious auto racing scene of the late 1960s/early 1970s – including the founding of the groundbreaking Ontario Motor Speedway, and its role in the ideation of the ultimate “all-star” professional driving competition – the International Race of Champions (IROC). Sports fans of a certain age will surely remember the old IROC series – which ran for 30 seasons starting in 1973 – where the best drivers from the world’s top auto racing disciplines raced one another in equally prepared and equitably crewed cars to determine motorsports’ “ultimate” annual champion. Multi-circuit veteran Tony Stewart (who won the final IROC XXX in 2006) certainly does – he and fellow NASCAR Hall of Famer Ray Evernham are teaming to reinvent the format next summer with a nationally televised six-race, short-track series to air in prime time on CBS called the Superstar Racing Experience (SRX). The basis for the IROC concept dates back to Lockton’s time as President/CEO and chief visionary of Ontario’s “Indianapolis of the West” – a stalled mid-1960s pipe dream that Lockton helped resuscitate, leveraging his budding professional driver representation firm and his Indianapolis Speedway/USAC governing body relationships into a state-of-the-art, all-purpose West Coast racing mecca just east of Los Angeles. Among the innovations Lockton and team pioneered at Ontario (which included a private stadium club with annual memberships, corporate suites, crash-absorbent retaining walls & safety fences, and computerized real-time timing/scoring/positioning data) was a first-of-its-kind pro-am celebrity race – featuring a co-mingling of Hollywood luminaries and professional drivers competing in similarly prepared vehicles – the foundational element of what would soon become the signature IROC series. PLUS: Hugh Downs keeps it together; Evel Knievel makes his case; and the short-lived sports commissioner career of Gerald Ford!
