American racecar driver
POPULARITY
His name is synonymous with sports in the 70's. You didn't have to follow racing to know who AJ Foyt was. He's a part of Americana and in 1975 he was looking to win his 4th Indy 500. A week earlier, he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated after winning the pole position in true Foyt fashion. His first lap in qualifying was a blistering 195.313 mph and his 4-lap average of 193.975 secured the pole position in Indianapolis. But rain and Bobby Unser had other plans… a downpour ended the race after just 174 of the 200 laps, and Unser was awarded the victory with 1974 champion Johnny Rutherford finishing 2nd and AJ a disappointing 3rd… taking it all in was a kid who grew up just north of the famous racetrack and attended his first race at the age of 6 in 1966… Scott Gauger hasn't missed an Indy 500 since, including the '75 race that saw Mother Nature end the race before it could properly come to it's scheduled conclusion. Gauger grew up around racing and started working at Indianapolis Motor Speedway when he was just 13. 5 years later in 1978, he took his first official position with an IndyCar team, and almost 50 years later, he's still a part of the Old Brickyard, working on two winning Indy 500 teams… 2016 He worked for the Andretti-Herta Autosport team that won the checkered flag for the 100th running of the Indy 500 with Alexander Rossi behind the wheel… and a year later, he was with Andretti Autosport when Takuma Sato was the first to cross the finish line. And while Gauger works officially for separate IndyCar teams, his unofficial position is Ambassador of the Indy 500. He gives tours, gets tickets for kids, and promotes the race 24/7, 365 days a year. On the Past Our Prime podcast, Gauger tells us about how he grew up near 3-time Indy 500 winner Louis Meyer, who is widely known for starting the annual tradition of drinking mile after winning at Indy… Gauger talks about the greats and says AJ Foyt is the best racer of all-time, and the first person he ever saw hav a personalized license plate… He tells us about drinking the milk after winning in '16 and again in '17 and he tells us which famous actor was the best racer of the bunch… if you know racing, it won't be a surprise. And Gauger tells us why the racers of today aren't as well-known as the ones we grew up watching 50 years ago. The Indy 500. It's as American as it gets… and so is Scott Gauger, Mr. Indy 500 on the Past Our Prime podcast. Give us a review and a download if you would and share it with your friends. Send us a textThe unsung heroes of motorsports often operate just beyond the spotlight, their critical work making high-speed glory possible while ensuring competitors return safely. Monte Widdison stands as a perfect example – the tall, calm presence who's been the last person thousands of racers see before accelerating down Bonneville's Salt Flats. For over 30 years, Monte has served as head starter for the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association, developing an approach to safety that racers credit with saving their lives. When Bob Dalton survived a 400+ mph crash, his first words to Monty were, "You saved my life," crediting the meticulous way Monty had tightened his safety belts. Similar testimonials from other survivors highlight how essential this final safety check truly is.Beyond starting duties, Monte helped revolutionized course preparation techniques at Bonneville. He reveals the secrets of identifying the optimal salt surface (not bright white but a harder, grayish-opaque salt), creating perfectly straight courses using distant mountains as reference points, and preparing racers mentally for their runs. His insights into salt conditions and driving techniques provide rare, practical wisdom for anyone fascinated by land speed racing. The stories Monte shares – from Bobby Unser initially resisting safety checks until Monte discovered his unlatched shoulder strap, to calming nervous racers with breathing exercises, to his adventures with temperamental course-dragging vehicles – paint a vivid picture of Bonneville's unique culture and challenges. They reveal how seemingly small details and procedures become life-critical when vehicles are exceeding speeds of 200 MPH plus.Whether you're a land speed racing enthusiast, a motorsports fan, or simply curious about the extraordinary people behind extraordinary achievements, this conversation offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of those who make record speeds possible – one safety check, one mile of perfectly prepared salt at a time.Support the show
“You jerk,” they'll shout, “that show title isn't relatable! Only the die-hards will understand! For pete's sake, man, think of the traffic analytics!” Who cares? I am Sam and I write these ep descriptions, and that title makes me happy. If you don't like it, hey, you probably aren't the kind of person to listen to a show about a “flap,” anyway. And: This is a show about a flap! It's also about two of the greatest American racers to have ever lived. The moment where two men of experience and wisdom grew frustrated. And how they stumbled onto an invention that changed aerodynamics forever. This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. This episode is our monthly deep dive into an epic moment from racing history. In this case, the time when Dan Gurney and Bobby Unser used an Indy car to discover something that would later be used to help helicopters fly. Related Trivia: Ross can fly a helicopter. Sam once rode in a Robinson R22. Jeff is a private pilot and about 1000 times cooler than Sam and Ross combined, so he probably taught his sons to autorotate in the womb or something. (I don't know, I've never asked, but you do the math, the guy is basically our Fonzie, right?) ... Christian Merli, Italy (Unlimited), 9:04.454. Dani Sordo, Spain (Exhibition/Hyundai Ioniq 5 N), 9:30.852. ... Cole Powelson, USA (Open Wheel), 9:33.222. Don Wickstrum, USA (Unlimited), 9:40.512. ... Jimmy Ford, USA (Pikes Peak Open), 9:40.660. John ‘Woody' Woodard spent twenty years with Penske Racing. He started working for the company on January 14, 1969 as a full time Mechanic, Chief Mechanic, and Crew Chief. In 1977 his role changed to Penske GM Power, then to Penske Power Systems, and again to Penske Truck Leasing in 1983. In his spare time he was a weekend warrior on Penske Indy Cars in the CART series. He was Chief Mechanic on three different National Championship teams, Trans Am with Chevrolet and Can Am with the Porsche 917s. He's worked with a number of championship drivers including Bobby Allison, Mario Andretti, Mark Donohue, George Follmer, Al and Bobby Unser, and David Hobbs to name just a few. Woody will be a panelist at this year's Philadelphia Concours d'Elegance.
Tasting Notes: The second release in the historic Borchetta Bourbon single barrel series pays homage to Bobby Unser's 1972 AAR Eagle, the first racecar to ever break 200mph on a closed course. The actual car is OWNED by Scott Borchetta, and is lovingly reproduced on the bottle stopper. In the historic box sits a single barrel of 5yr, cask-strength Tennessee Bourbon bottled at 122.5 proof and hand-numbered. This honestly has to be the most detailed, story-oriented package of whiskey I have ever seen. It's worth the $299.99 just to read the story on the darn label. The whiskey inside boasts dark cherry, ripe banana, rich oak, and leather. It's definitely craft, but one of the better ones I've had, honestly.
5-2-2023 Passed Ball Show. John starts this program by congratulating James Harden for his 45 point performance leading the Philadelphia 76ers to a Game One victory over the Boston Celtics. He adds that Harden is better off as a number one scoring option as this brings out the best in his game before comparing this game to the media's expectation that the best teams in the NBA all need to have multiple superstars to succeed. Of course, this comes from the “decision” when LeBron James chose to join Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami and has been the expectation of the championship caliber teams since. Harden, Russell Westbrook, and maybe even Kawhi Leonard, are at their best when they are the Alpha Male, the option, the number one scorer. John spends a little bit of time talking about the Chicago White Sox baseball team and the assumption that now former manager Tony LaRussa was the problem and what was holding back that squad. Either the former was going to be proven right or the players were going to prove to be the issue and John explains why the latter is true in this situation. John then explains why it makes the most sense for the New York Mets two top prospects to remain in Triple-A right now and the unique depth they provide for the team right now that no other MLB team has. During today's “Saving Sports History” segment, John talks about Ross Barnes, the start of the Negro National League, the Toronto Maple Leafs, David Beckham, Bobby Unser, and more.
As an 8-year-old, Pastor Don Wickstrum ("Fastest Pastor") had a dream to race in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb after seeing Bobby Unser do it on TV. Despite his dream, Don eventually created one of the largest robotic integrators in the country. In 2018, Don received a doctor's report that no one wants to hear—colon cancer. His doctor advised Don to step away from his business to extend his life. The diagnosis would put Don on a new journey with purpose and fulfillment. This former atheist accepted Jesus Christ with a new perspective on his life. Whatever Don was going to do, it would include serving God because of his deep understanding of who he was in Christ.A friend encouraged Don to pursue his dream. After he and his wife sought God's direction, Don's childhood dream would come to true. Eventually, the multimedia company “I Am Second”, founded by Norm Miller, would document Don's story in a movie called, “Chasing Hope.” The film follows Don as he shares the Hope of Jesus Christ on and off the track. Don will race again on June 25, 2023. He will race 12.42 miles that day complete with 156 turns. With each turn, Don will face each one, all while Chasing Hope.------------------------FROM THE SHOW:Don's website:https://fastestpastor.com/"Chasing Hope" Movie:https://www.iamsecond.com/film/chasing-hope/I Am Second website:https://www.iamsecond.com/Book Don to Speak:https://fastestpastor.com/speaking----------------------------------------MORE ABOUT THE PODCAST:Behind The Mike website:https://BehindTheMikePodcast.comEmail:Mike@BehindTheMike.netRate & Review on Apple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/behind-the-mike-conversations-of-hope/id1491102872SPONSOR:Covenant EyesGet 30-days FREE using promo code: BEHINDTHEMIKEhttps://covenanteyes.comSupport the showhttps://buymeacoffee.com/TheMikePodSupport the showWatch these podcasts on YouTube!Follow Us!FacebookInstagramTikTok
Today's episode is filled with multiple quotes about the concept of success. There are nine quotes from nine different people. All of the quotes are in the chapter on "Success" in my new gift book for senior athletes called, "Senior Salute."There are some common themes that I discuss that you will notice running through these quotes. They are good quotes to highlight those themes, but they also get at the heart of what success truly is and how to get it.If you're interested in picking up a great gift for a senior athlete, check out "Senior Salute" on the SlamDunk Success website - https://slamdunksuccess.com.
One of the world's most iconic auto races, the Indianapolis 500, will be run this Sunday. In the 111-year history of the Indy 500 only a handful of drivers have won the race three times or more And only two drivers have won the race in three different decades. One of them Bobby, Unser, who's part of the storied Unser auto racing family. He won the Indy 500 in 1968, 1975, and 1981. He and his brother Al are the only set of brothers ever to win the Indy 500. I met Bobby Unser in the spring of 2003, when he wrote a motivational book called Winners Are Driven.
On Beyond The Bricks, Jake Query and Mike Thomsen take a look at a pair of Indy 500 rookies in 1981, Josele Garza and Kevin Cogan. They talk about Garza’s hot start at Indianapolis in ‘81, and how he learned from three-time champion Bobby Unser. Jake and Mike discuss the origins of “(Back Home Again in) Indiana” at the Indy 500. Later, we hear historic audio from Josele Garza, including him taking phone calls from fans on the “Talk From Gasoline Alley” in 1982. To wrap up the show, the guys look at the career of Kevin Cogan, who is perhaps unfairly best known for the crash at the start of the 1982 500.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As the debut season of the surprisingly entertaining Tony Stewart/Ray Evernham-led Camping World SRX Series nears its conclusion next week, we dive deeper into the rabbit hole of one of its major influences - the legendary International Race of Champions (IROC) - with longtime automotive journalist and former Motor Trend magazine Executive Editor Matt Stone (“The IROC Porsches: The International Race of Champions, Porsche's 911 RSR & the Men Who Raced Them”). As table-set in our previous Episode 173 with former Indianapolis and Ontario Speedway exec Dave Lockton, IROC was envisioned as the American motorsports equivalent of a major “all-star” showcase - pitting twelve of the world's best professional drivers from racing's top competitive circuits in a series of races in identically prepared and maintained cars, in an effort to test participants' pure driving ability and determine the sport's true “champion.” Stone helps us with the backstory of IROC's operational formation - brought to life in late 1973 by racing executives Roger Penske, Les Richter and Mike Phelps in the form of an initial four-race roadcourse series across Riverside international Raceway (three qualifying races: 10/27-28, 1973) and Daytona International Speedway (final: 2/14, 1974) - all televised in tape-delayed glory on ABC's then-dominant sports anthology series Wide World of Sports. Inaugural invitees: NASCAR Winston Cup champions Bobby Allison, Richard Petty & David Pearson; SCCA Can-Am road-race standouts Mark Donohue, Peter Revson & George Folker; USAC Champ (Indy) Car winners Bobby Unser, A.J. Foyt, Gordon Johncock & Roger McCluskey; and Formula One stars Denis Hulme & Emerson Fittipaldi. And the now-iconic sports car initially selected to challenge them all: the purpose-built, virtually identical 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 - all 16 originals of which are still alive, well, hugely revered, and highly sought-after today.
Not only did he recover from a harrowing helicopter crash that almost struck Speedway High School in 1977, he also had to cope earlier that year with the suicide of his mentor, Sid Collins, the original "Voice of the Indy 500" on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network. Veteran motorsports broadcaster Paul Page - who was inducted into the IMS Hall of Fame last month - will be Nelson's guest to share insights from his eventful life, including his close friendship with three-time Indy 500 winner Bobby Unser, who died in May at age 87. Unser periodically had been Paul's sidekick in the broadcast booth on both radio and TV.

Pit Pass Indy is loaded with content this week as the “Month of May” kicks off this weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with three full weeks of activity culminating with the 105th Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 30. But action kicks off at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Friday with practice and qualifications for Saturday's GMR Grand Prix on the IMS Road Course. There have already been two races this May, however. Texas Motor Speedway hosted a doubleheader weekend with the Genesys 300 on Saturday night, May 1 with Scott Dixon driving to another dominating victory for the second year in a row. On Sunday, May 2, 21-year-old Pato O'Ward scored his first career IndyCar win in the XPEL 375. Today's show will take a look back at the Texas doubleheader. It was going to be the theme of last week's Pit Pass Indy, but with the passing of three-time Indianapolis 500 winning driver Bobby Unser at the age of 87, we created a tribute to one of the biggest names in Indy 500 history. After the two Texas races we take a post-race “Pit Walk” featuring on some of the biggest stories that came out of the Texas doubleheader including race winners Scott Dixon and Pato O'Ward, Team Penske rookie Scott McLaughlin, four-time Indianapolis 500 winning driver Rick Mears, Team Penske race strategist Jon Bouslog, Graham Rahal, Tony Kanaan, Will Power, Colton Herta and Arrow McLaren SP team owners Sam Schmidt and Ric Peterson as well as team president Taylor Kiel. Our featured guest this week is Penske Entertainment CEO Mark Miles, who discusses the plans for 137,000 fans at this year's Indianapolis 500, making it the largest sporting event in the World since the COVID-19 Pandemic began last year. We also discuss a variety of interesting topics with Miles. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

These episodes just keep creeping up in length, before long this is going to be a multi hour podcast. To be fair to us though there was a lot that happened the last two weeks and there was a lot to talk about. Of course that didn't stop us from going off on some weird tangents, and the wine certainly didn't help that, but we had a good time and we know you will too. This week we talk about more alternative fuel racing ventures, the new ultimate AE86 build, read our first viewer mail, and talk about a racing series I never expected to mention on this show. We want to heard from you! Email us at contact@religionofspeed.com. We are accepting feedback on the show, questions you want us to answer on air, and shout-outs to any people, shop, or business that has helped you out in your automotive journey. This week begins with some sad news as three-time Indianapolis 500 winning driver Bobby Unser passed away late Sunday night after a lengthy illness at the age of 87. Upon reflecting on the life of this Indy 500 legend (who is also a 10-time Pikes Peak Hill Climb champion), a line from Dr. Seuss comes to mind: “Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.” Not only was Unser one of IndyCar racing's most legendary drivers, he was also one of its greatest personalities. He was fast and fearless on the track, and talkative and controversial outside of the car. He won 37 IndyCar Series races in both the United States Auto Club (USAC) and CART. He also won 52 poles in his career. His Indy 500 wins came in 1968, 1975 and 1981. Once his racing career was over, Unser became part of ABC's television crew that telecast the Indianapolis 500 and other IndyCar races on TV. His personality and bombastic style made him a fan favorite. The episode of Pit Pass Indy is entirely devoted to Unser as host Bruce Martin gives his highly personal reflections on a driver who was a hero as a youngster and became a close friend in life. Racing legend and 1969 Indianapolis 500 winner Mario Andretti, a friend with Unser for most of his career and one of his fiercest rivals, gives his thoughts on Unser. Also, four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Rick Mears pays tribute to his former teammate at Penske Racing. Instead of recapping the doubleheader action at Texas Motor Speedway this past weekend, those interviews will be part of next week's show on Pit Pass Indy. Learn more about your ad choices.
