Einstein Flint is an ex-rodeo rider, born in Brooklyn and raised in every other borough in the city. Now, he's banged-up, burnt out and back in NYC, bouncing at Boom Boom's. Dasha Bragin was smart, fearless and…remorseless as desert sun. But now she's dead and the cops are pretty sure Flint is their guy. Flint and Dasha had been a couple before the cops found her body, damaged in ways that don't allow the next breath. When word on the street gets out that Flint had brought somebody into town to kill her, the police are even more certain they have their man. Flint learns the street chatter is coming from people that Flint thought were his friends—he's not sure who he can trust or why he's being setup. Flint finds the first loose thread when Dasha's roommate, Mya, shows up at his door looking for help. Dasha and Mya, had taken off a private, high stakes game for almost a million dollars and then left a trail of bread crumbs. But they had picked the wrong game—these boys would kill you for insulting their sister. Take their money? They would pull you apart, one thin layer at a time…until the only thing between you and dead was that wishes don't come true. Einstein has to find a path to the real killers and take them down without becoming part of the body count.Boom Boom's Last Call is influenced by characters like James Sallis' Lew Griffin, Robert Crais's Elvis Cole and a young Dave Robicheaux—men who know that words like honor and duty have become a punch line…but they just don't get the jokeSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Today on the show, we're overjoyed to be joined by the talented Hossein Amini, writer of 2011's cult smash thriller Drive. Based on the 2004 James Sallis novel of the same name, and directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, Drive told the story of a stuntman by day and getaway driver by night, whose dual lives collide after he strikes up a friendship with his neighbour, Irene (Carey Mulligan). From there, Hossein's screenplay submerged audiences in a dangerous, hyper-stylised LA criminal underworld, strapping viewers into the passenger seat next to a captivatingly unknowable protagonist, simply named the Driver (Ryan Gosling). If you've read the novel, you'll know that Hossein had quite a task taking the lyrical, very interior prose and plot of the book, and turning it into a movie. Luckily, the Iranian-born storyteller is a bit of a master when it comes to adaptation: from 1997's The Wings of the Dove to his 2014 directorial debut The Two Faces of January, Hossein relishes the task of taking a story from page to screen, adding a subtle sprinkle of his personality and past to the recipe along the way.Across an engrossing chat, Hossein explains why Drive is in fact a fairy tale. We talk about what the film expresses about our culture of violence, why an early draft of the film featured the death of Irene, and how his storytelling habits were shaped by a childhood in the shadow of his parent's divorce and the Iranian revolution. We also get into the meaning of The Driver's Scorpion jacket, how the film's iconic elevator sequence came to be, and the writer's dark, gritty vision for the upcoming Obi Wan Kenobi TV series that he worked on briefly before stepping away from the project.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. It is an activity associated with cutting your risk of death from COVID by two and a half times, and cutting risk of developing severe COVID by two times. That activity is exercise, and the study that established its power as a modifiable risk factor against the coronavirus was led by Dr. Robert Sallis, past president of the American College of Sports Medicine and director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship program at California’s Kaiser Permanente Medical Center. In this episode he’s in conversation with Medcan chief medical officer Dr. Peter Nord.  https://www.eatmovethinkpodcast.com/podcast/ep-65-how-to-protect-against-covid   LINKS The study lead by Dr. Robert Sallis in the British Journal of Sports Medicine: https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/early/2021/04/07/bjsports-2021-104080 New York Times’ Well blog story on the COVID/Fitness study: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/14/well/move/exercise-covid-19-working-out.html Exercise is Medicine blog post by Bob Sallis and James Sallis that provides good background on some of Sallis’s frustration with the public health response to COVID: https://www.exerciseismedicine.org/support_page.php/stories/?b=959 Resources tying fitness level and exercise to immune function: https://www.exerciseismedicine.org/support_page.php/covid-19-and-exercise1/ Medcan director of fitness Stephen Salzmann and fitness manager Anna Topali hosted a webinar about how to incorporate exercise snacks throughout your workday. Check it out.  To create a personalized exercise training regimen and work with some of the country’s best trainers, check out virtual training by Medcan Fitness.     INSIGHTS  Get moving: Dr. Sallis’ study divided study participants into three groups — those who didn’t exercise at all, those who exercised a little bit and those who achieved at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week. Compared to the group that received the most exercise, the “no exercise” group was two and a half times as likely to die from COVID and twice as likely to be hospitalized, as well as twice as likely to be admitted to intensive care. [07:20] There’s no time like the present: “There has never been a better time to start an exercise program,” Dr. Sallis says. “Short of getting the vaccine, this is the single most important thing you can do to protect yourself from COVID... protect yourself against the next variant, or the next pandemic down the line. This is a wake up call. You need to pay attention to it and start getting active to protect yourself.” [08:22]  Words matter: Dr. Sallis is disappointed that physical inactivity hasn’t been included as a major risk factor for severe COVID in key messaging from medical leaders. “All of us have been a bit disappointed that the uptake has been slow. Certainly, you don’t hear it coming from Anthony Fauci’s mouth, or the CDC—the CDC still does not list it on its website, that physical inactivity is a major risk factor,” he says, adding that the World Health Organization, at least, does include physical inactivity as a major risk factor for severe COVID. “We’re always running behind on our messaging.” [11:56]   “The take home message for everybody around the world is that you just need to walk,” Dr. Sallis says, noting that the ideal pace is hard enough to prevent you from singing, but moderate enough that you can still talk. A brisk 30-minute walk five days a week will do it, but you can also break it up throughout the day: Taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or parking farther away in the parking lot. [13:39] Rethinking lockdowns: Dr. Sallis disagrees with closing outdoor athletic or recreational facilities like parks, hiking trails, tennis courts and golf courses. Outdoor venues where you can partake in physical activity, while distanced and masked, are safe, he says. In fact, people should be encouraged to take advantage of them. In Dr. Sallis’s mind, if big-box stores  can stay open, then we should be able to figure out accommodations for exercise, too. “These [venues] are essential to life. Physical activity is essential to life,” he says. [18:21]   Proactive patient care: Dr. Sallis believes the medical profession should treat exercise as a prescription, one that would optimally be attempted before pharmaceutical treatments. For example, if a patient is struggling with depression, the doctor should explore their fitness habits before prescribing an antidepressant. After all, studies have shown that exercise can “dramatically improve” depression. “You have to really sell it like you would [sell] Prozac,” he says. [19:22]   Shifting mindsets: Closely connected to the idea of “prescribing” exercise is moving the medical field, where possible, away from a focus on pills and procedures. “We are so driven by pharma,” Dr. Sallis says. The message of this pandemic has been: Stay inside until you get a vaccine. Dr. Sallis wishes the messaging would have been different. “It should have been: ‘Until you get a vaccine, you need to try to walk everyday, because that’s the single best defense short of a vaccine,’” he says. Plus, there’s evidence that exercise improves one’s immune response overall. “We have shown that [in people who exercise], the flu vaccine works better. I’ve got to believe that the COVID vaccine is going to be similar.” And that means: Keep up those daily walks even after the pandemic is over. [22:07]

This movie divides people. Either you liked it, or you didn't. Either you "get it" or you don't. That's fair to say about *most* films but this one is special. Nicolas Winding Refn is becoming more well-known now, but when Drive was released late in 2011, he was completely unknown in the states. Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan star alongside Bryan Cranston and Oscar Isaac in this visually stunning adaptation of a novel by James Sallis. Join us as we talk about Drive, the Driver, what drives us, what we like to drive, driver's ed, driving... okay, okay, enough

Episode 3 is an interview with author  Désirée Zamorano. We talk about her masterful PI novel, Human Cargo; her short story, "Quickie;" Akashic Books' Mondays Are Murder flash fiction series (hers will go live on August 1st!); and we briefly touch on her literary novel, The Amado Women. Désirée isn't just a writer, she is a fellow mystery lover, and she gives a shout-out to a number of fabulous writers and books. I've linked to the websites of these contemporary writers: Edgar winner Naomi Hirahara, Ausma Zehanat Khan, Sara Gran, best-selling author Kate Atkinson, James Sallis (who has won the lifetime achievement award from Bouchercon, among many other mystery awards), Rachel Howzell Hall, Sue Ann Jaffarian, and the wonderful Steph Cha, whom I interviewed in Episode 2. Classic mystery writers include Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, John D. MacDonald (the Travis McGee novels) and Patricia Highsmith. One last influential writer mentioned, although not in the field of mystery, is Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz. We talk about books and writing, but we also discussed the need for women to be financially savvy and have an "escape fund" -- not necessarily to escape a dangerous relationship (although obviously that can help), but also so you're not stuck in a bad work situation. Money is freedom.  The most important links, however, are the ones Désirée sent me on human trafficking: Fighting Human Trafficking, and 20 Ways You Can Help If you'd rather read than listen, here is the transcript. Enjoy! Transcript of interview with Désirée Zamorano Welcome to Destination Mystery: A Podcast for Readers who Love a Good Mystery. I’m Laura Brennan. A Pushcart Prize nominee and award-winning short story author, Desiree Zamorano has wrestled with culture, identity, and the invisibility of Latinas from early on and addressed that in her commentaries which have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, NPR’s Latino USA, and Publisher’s Weekly. She is also proud of having co-authored with her sister two plays commissioned by Southern California's Bilingual Foundation for the Arts. "Reina" and "Bell Gardens 90201" received Equity productions and toured for a total of eight years. She delights in the exploration of contemporary issues of injustice and inequality, via her mystery series featuring private investigator, Inez Leon, published by Lucky Bat Books. Human Cargo was Latinidad's Mystery Pick of the Year. Her novel, Modern Cons is a story of psychological suspense where she explores the reverberations of being raised by a con artist. Laura Brennan: Thank you for being here. I'm so excited. Désirée Zamorano: Whoo-hoo! LB: How are you, Désirée? DZ: Me, too. I'm excited, too. LB: Tell me a little bit about yourself. How did you get started writing? DZ: We writers are all a crazy bunch and we probably as kids said, Oh, I want to create something so wonderful, because as kids we have fallen into this world. And as kids we have this naïve perception that writers just magically put those words on the page. Well, I wanted to magically put those words on the page! But as I got older I realized it took a lot of work to make the work look seamless. So you asked how I got into it. I always wanted to be a writer and I started sending off my short stories -- those were a big deal as I was my twenties, short stories were the thing -- and after about 100 rejections, two acceptances and $50, I thought wow, that's a lot of heartache! I mean, if I'm going to deal with rejection, I might as well go big time. So I sat down to write a novel. I'm going okay, I'm going to write the Great American novel. And I sat down to write a novel and I thought, I have no idea what I'm doing. And I thought about all the books I loved to read and I love classics, I love contemporary modern fiction, but have a real soft spot for mysteries. And what I love about mysteries, and what I loved as I sat down to write mysteries,

Sweet Nothing: Stories (Mulholland Books) Richard Lange is one of our most highly acclaimed literary mystery writers. He has been hailed as a “natural-born storyteller” and compared to great masters like Raymond Carver and Denis Johnson. His debut, Dead Boys, was called “one of the best short story collections of the past 50 years” by the San Francisco Chronicle, and it put his name on the literary map. Now he returns to the form that started it all with his latest collection, Sweet Nothing. A gambler tries to hide his addiction on a date at the racetrack. An ex-con must decide between cashing in on a lucrative heist and staying the course as a small-time security guard. And a recovering drug addict yearns to connect with a beautiful woman during his graveyard shift at Subway. With the dark side of Los Angeles as a backdrop, these ten unforgettable stories artfully combine the honest characterization of Junot Díaz with the edge-of-your-seat energy of Dennis Lehane. They capture and crystallize the mistakes and poor judgments that truly make us human, and reveal how a moment's misstep can irrevocably shape a life.  Praise for Sweet Nothing: “Skillfully constructed.…Lange portrays the lives of people struggling to survive, with the focus on families, both blood-related and chance-made.”—Booklist “For all the darkness that runs through the stories…Lange maintains a disarmingly light touch, finding plenty of human comedy in the proceedings without sacrificing empathy.…Lange's morality tales are not that far removed from the classic stories of O. Henry and Guy de Maupassant. With a distinctive style, Lange makes his downbeat tales of the underclass quirkily entertaining.” —Kirkus Reviews “Utterly believable postcards from the edge; for those who like their realism not so magical but right there at street level.” —Library Journal “The best stories are rabbit holes. You read the first lines, maybe a page, and you're down there. Somewhere else. Another life. Richard Lange is one cwazy wabbit.”—James Sallis, author of Drive “What makes this collection a wonderful read is that it's only marginally akin to anything else. Swift, gut-wrenching, and sometimes cleverly disarming fiction by a master.”—Joe R. Lansdale, author of The Thicket and Edge of Dark Water “I've been reading Richard Lange's work since Dead Boys blew my doors off years ago, and goddamn, the man just keeps getting better. The stories in Sweet Nothing traffic in the vagaries of the human heart, those wants and needs that push us down dark paths. His vision is steely-eyed, yet you sense that Lange loves his characters—even the worst of them—and that compassion sharpensyour own emotional investment in this powerful brace of stories.”—Craig Davidson, author of Cataract City Richard Lange is the author of the story collection Dead Boys and the novels This Wicked World and Angel Baby. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, and his fiction has appeared in Best American Mystery Stories 2004 and 2011. He lives in Los Angeles.

Columnist Suzanne Moore gives her verdict. Singer Rumer released her first album Seasons of My Soul to much acclaim in 2010. Her second album is a collection of songs originally made famous by male artists. She discusses how she chose the songs and how she coped with her nerves at a recent performance at the White House, singing for President Obama. Driven is set seven years after the events in Drive, and the nameless Driver finds that his past still stalks him. Writer Travis Elborough charts the close connections between British crime fiction and British beaches - not just for readers sitting by the sea with a book, but for writers including Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie and Peter James. With John Wilson. Ryan Gosling stars in two contrasting films in cinemas from Friday. In Drive, a thriller based on the cult novel by James Sallis, he plays a Hollywood stunt driver moonlighting as a getaway driver in the criminal underworld of Los Angeles. In the rom-com Crazy, Stupid, Love, he plays a handsome lothario acting as wingman for an older guy returning to the singles scene. Antonia Quirke reviews and discusses Ryan Gosling's career. Mike Scott of the band The Waterboys explains how the Nobel-winning Irish poet W B Yeats has become co-writer on his new album. A selection of Yeats' poems - including September 1913 and An Irish Airman Forsees His Death - have been set to music by Scott on the Waterboys' record An Appointment With Mr Yeats. John Wilson takes a tour of 'Firstsite', the new £28m art gallery in Colchester, Essex, designed by Uruguayan-born Rafael Vinoly. The architect explains how Roman archeaological remains beneath Colchester dictated the form of the single-storey, crescent-shaped building - dubbed the 'golden banana'. Architect Rafael Viñoly shows John around the Firstsite art centre in Colchester. Andrew O'Hagan's debut book, The Missing, was a meditation on people who disappear from their lives- and the families they leave behind. Inspired by his own experience as a reporter camped outside Fred and Rosemary West's home while the bodies of their victims were being discovered, and acclaimed as a portrait of mid-1990s Britain, it was shortlisted for three major literary awards. Now O'Hagan, together with director John Tiffany (Black Watch), has adapted his book into a new production for Glasgow's Tramway theatre. Critic Mark Brown reviews.
