Today, the Spotlight shines On Cary Baker, author of Down on the Corner: Adventures in Busking and Street Music. The music you hear on street corners and subway platforms has its untold history, and at age 16, Cary Baker followed a slide guitar's haunting melody through Chicago's Maxwell Street Market to find himself face-to-face with bluesman Blind Arvella Gray. That chance encounter sparked a lifelong obsession.Cary's book, Down on the Corner, traces the heritage of street music across 100 years, from blues legends in the 1920s to modern-day buskers armed with QR codes. He's spoken with everyone from Lucinda Williams to Billy Bragg about their days playing for tips, revealing how many music careers began with nothing but an open guitar case. The streets have always been America's most democratic stage, where doo-wop harmonies, folk ballads, and raw blues first reached public ears. Because we're readers and whatnot, this week we get literate on y'all and discuss some of our favorite rock n' roll memoirs. Our Third Lad knows a thing or two about great rock memoirs, because he just published one...singer, songwriter, guitar hero, baseball aficionado, and now author...Steve Wynn from The Dream Syndicate! His memoir, I Wouldn't Say It If It Wasn't True, is out now from Jawbone Press, covering his earliest days as a kid in LA falling in love with music, and down the road that took him to and through the first era of The Dream Syndicate. As a companion to the book, Fire Records simultaneously released Steve's first new solo album in 14 years, Make It Right, featuring songs that were inspired by the process of writing his memoir and reflecting on his life, from his beginnings in "Santa Monica" to present days on "Roosevelt Avenue". Steve is currently touring the eastern part of the US, with west coast and European dates to follow in early 2025, promising "a night of songs and stories" that you won't want to miss. Keep up on the latest news at https://stevewynn.net. During our conversation, we also cover: The Paisley Underground - the LA neo-psych scene that also spawned The Bangles, Three O'Clock, The Rain Parade, Green on Red, The Long Ryders! The lasting legacy of their classic 1982 debut The Days of Wine and Roses! What's in store for the out of print Dream Syndicate records Medicine Show (1984) and Ghost Stories (1988)? The 21st century return of the Dream Syndicate! Living with a drummer! (Don't worry, it's his wife Linda Pitmon, not Tommy Lee...) Little Steven's Underground Garage Cruise! Baseball! His supergroup The Baseball Project with Linda Pitmon, Scott McCaughey from Young Fresh Fellows / The Minus 5 and Mike Mills and Peter Buck from R.E.M. Also, who is Steve rooting for during the 2024 World Series? You won't want to miss this...and we wouldn't say it if it wasn't true. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Steve Wynn is the founder and creative force behind the influential L.A. rock band The Dream Syndicate, which never quite made the leap to mainstream, but they were probably one of your favorite bands' favorite bands. In addition to a solo career, Steve has played with many of gene's heaviest hitters, including four albums with The Baseball Project, which also includes Peter Buck and Mike Mills of REM, Scott McGaughey of The Young Fresh Fellows, and Lita Pitmon of Filthy Friends. Steve recently published his first book, I Wouldn't Say It If It Wasn't True: A Memoir Of Life, Music, And The Dream Syndicate, which is published by Jawbone Press. His new solo album is called Make It Right and is available from Fire Records.

For years, David Bernz taped the folk-music legend. In a new book, he shares his friend's musings and memories. Counting the number of music store owners who have published a book, passed the bar exam and won two Grammy Awards takes one finger. David Bernz, the humble co-owner of Jake's Main Street Music in Beacon, is a proficient musician with a distinguished pedigree in folk music circles who enjoyed a friendship and collaborative relationship with Pete Seeger, a familiar face in the city for 65 years until his death in 2014 at age 94. Now comes a book, Chopping Wood: Thoughts & Stories of a Legendary American Folksinger, compiled by Bernz and scheduled for publication on May 3, Seeger's birthday. That evening, Bernz and friends will celebrate Seeger's legacy at the Towne Crier, 379 Main St. The book, which is being published by Jawbone Press in London, includes Seeger's musings on music, history, civil rights and the environment recorded by Bernz during the icon's later years. Other bits and pieces from the archives include a letter Seeger sent to Bruce Springsteen in 2006 detailing his intent to give away his song royalties. Festival Planned for 2025 After a three-year hiatus, the Clearwater Festival may return to Croton Point Park in 2025 to honor Pete Seeger, who founded it decades ago with his wife, Toshi. A newly created nonprofit, RiverFest for Pete's Sake, based in Briarcliff Manor, hopes to raise $950,000 to hold the Hudson River Folk Festival over Father's Day weekend. Hudson River Sloop Clearwater canceled the festival in 2022 because of financial shortfalls. The new group was created by Mitzi Elkes, a Clearwater board member; Hal Cohen, a Clearwater founder; and artist Roy Volpe. It announced its plan on April 14 and launched a website at riverfestfps.org. Bernz wrote the preface and ample contextual material, which makes up about a third of the text. It reveals the pair's close personal and professional relationship that began in the mid-1970s when the teenaged Bernz chauffeured Seeger to gigs. "The recordings started because Pete knew I had a four-track device," Bernz recalls. "I was a novice, but he'd call and say, 'The BBC wants me to answer three questions,' or 'I need to record a song for a special occasion.' He felt comfortable in my house." The requests grew more frequent and the projects expanded, which provided material for the book and the Grammies. "At one point, I figured the [spoken-word] tapes would end up in the dustbin of history, but then I thought, 'It would be crazy not to work on this,'" Bernz says. "We need to get more of his ideas out there, especially with all the rancor these days. He was all about finding commonalities." In 2008, Bernz won his first Grammy, as a producer, for Pete Seeger at 89, which was named best folk album. Two years later, Tomorrow's Children - a project initiated by Dan Einbender in the Beacon schools that features the Rivertown Kids singers - won best children's album. Folk music is in Bernz's blood: During a jam session at his shop on April 14, he played a song that turned "Mary Had a Little Lamb" into a Civil Rights manifesto. He said his father, Harold Bernz, became radicalized during the Great Depression and viewed music as a way to foster social change. Harold worked with Seeger to establish the quarterly People's Songs Bulletin in 1946. It evolved in 1950 into Sing Out!, which covered the folk and acoustic scene and was published until 2014, the year Seeger died and Main Street Music opened. The younger Bernz grew up on Red Hill in Croton-on-Hudson, a magnet for left-wing artists and activists from New York City. He moved to Beacon in 1991 because of its affordability, proximity to the river and his job in the legal profession. He named the store after his son, Jacob, who is also a musician and songwriter. The Bernz authorized to practice law still does so on occasion but mostly enjoys interacting with musicians at the store and playing banjo and guitar on...

Baxie talks biographer Nina Antonia about the late Johnny Thunders from the New York Dolls and The Heartbreakers. Nina's 1987 biography "Johnny Thunders: In Cold Blood" has been reissued by Jawbone Press. Nina not only talks about meeting Johnny Thunders, but she also talks about his legacy, his demons, and about the mysteries surround his death in 1991 at the age of 38. It's an exceptional book about an often-misunderstood legend whose career changed the course of Rock & Roll. Author Joel McIver is back with a revised edition of To Live Is to Die: The Life and Death of Metallica's Cliff Burton. In the book Robb Flynn of Machine Head calls, “One of the best biographies you'll ever read” you'll get the story behind Metallica's original bassist Cliff Burton.Cliff led the band from garage thrash to sophisticated, progressive heights thanks in large part to his songwriting ability and phenomenal bass skills on the band's first three studio albums, including the masterpiece Master of Puppets from 1986. Sadly, Cliff's life came to an early end. He was just 24 when he died in a tour bus crash in Sweden on September 27th, 1986. Following his passing, Metallica went on to massive global success but even they admit they've never pushed the creative envelope as radically as they had during the first four years of their career. To coincide with the 40th anniversary of Metallica's debut album Kill ‘Em All, McIver's revised and updated edition of To Live Is To Die [originally published in 2009] adds a new chapter that looks at Cliff's legacy from a fresh perspective and includes commentary from current Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo and Aquaman star Jason Momoa as well as an eyewitness account of the opening of the Cliff Burton Museum in Sweden in 2022. Testament bassist Steve Di Giorgio also adds his memories of meeting Cliff as a teen and then watching he and his band Metallica begin to take off. We'll talk about the life and career of Cliff Burton and some of what's in this brand new edition of To Live Is To Die in this episode with author Joel McIver!Purchase a copy of To Live Is to Die: The Life and Death of Metallica's Cliff Burton from Jawbone Press through Amazone HERE Listen to a playlist of the music discussed in this episode HEREListen to Cliff Burton's isolated bass track on Metallica's "Master Of Puppets" HEREFollow Joel McIver on FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM & TWITTERVisit the Booked On Rock Website HERE Watch exclusive video segments from the Booked On Rock podcast HERE Follow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOKTWITTERINSTAGRAMTIKTOK Support Your Local Bookstore! Stu Levitan welcomes Brian J Kramp, author of a book about a world-famous band that is technically from Rockford IL, but which owes a lot of its success to Madison. That band of course is Cheap Trick, the book is This Band Has No Past: How Cheap Trick Became Cheap Trick, from the good people at Jawbone Press. The book's title notwithstanding, the band does indeed have a past, and a very interesting one at that. First, there was the Byzantine way in which the bands Grim Reapers, Toastin Jam, Phrenz, Toons, Zander and Kent, Sick Man of Europe, Fuse and others morphed and mutated into CT. Then there was the relentless and ultimately effort by our friend Ken Adamany, who booked or managed several iterations, to get them a record deal. Their hard work paid off – 5000 live performances, 20 million albums sold, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It's a double-header that Brian J. Kramp is well, maybe even uniquely qualified to tell. After all, he was across the street from Sunset Bowl in his native Waukesha Wisconsin that night in 1976 when a legendary record producer signed on with Cheap Trick. Now Brian was 2 years old at the time, so he was likely not aware of the epochal event, but it does give him some personal skin in the game. And he's worn out a lot of shoe leather researching the book, at least metaphorically, interviewing not just several of the principals, but tracking down musicians who were in bands with the tricksters close to sixty years ago. The result is a fascinating deep dive on a band that went from bowling alleys and beer halls to arenas and stadiums, from the Stone Hearth to the Rock and Rolll Hall of Fame. It's a pleasure to welcome to Madison BookBeat, Brian J. Kramp.
In 1995, Suede, to the outside world, were done. After being left on their skinny arses upon completion of the sprawling Dog Man Star album by the departed guitar hero Bernard Butler, few would have expected the group to rise again, and certainly not with a record as fresh and as effervescent as their third, Coming Up. If you were a fan of music in that era, you will know what happened next. And yet what did happen, that glorious rebirth, is a story not told often enough. Early last year, Jane Savidge, the group's PR – and one half of legendary Britpop era PR firm Savidge & Best - saw her second book Here They Come With Their Make Up On: Suede, Coming Up And More Adventures Beyond The Wild Frontiers, published by Jawbone Press. And what a great book it is too, rammed full of insider knowledge and delivered with fannish, yet crafted prose. In this episode I talk to Jane about her book, about Suede's rebirth with the Coming Up album, but also about that heady era, the book about Pulp that she's writing now, and about her thoughts on music publicity in 2023. Jane was and is, one of my favourite British music industry figures – if we had another ten of her, we wouldn't be in such a boring mess. And yet she really is a one off, as I'm sure you'll agree after spending this episode in her company… Twitter - @jamesjammcmahon Substack - https://spoook.substack.com YouTube - www.youtube.com/channel/UC8Vf_1E1Sza2GUyFNn2zFMA Reddit - https://www.reddit.com/r/jamesmcmahonmusicpod/
Albert Ayler is a mythic figure amongst the musically curious and those drawn to the further reaches of sonic expression. Although he played inside the boundaries of what could be recognised as 'jazz' his influence extended far beyond into rock and even 'serious' music. His biography, published in the UK by JawBone Press is the work of extensive and lengthy research by American academic and music fan Richard Kolada.

Written with S.E. Feinberg, Alan Walden's "Southern Man" is the memoir of a life in music during one of the most racially turbulent times in American history. It presents the voice of Alan Walden—a remarkable, sensitive, humble, and brilliant man; a boy from the country who, serendipitously, along with his brother Phil and best friend Otis Redding, helped to nurture a musical renaissance. It is the story of a son of Macon, Georgia, and his passion for R&B and rock'n'roll at a time when it took wits and a Southern persistence to overcome the obstacles on the hard scrabble road to success—the tragedy of loss, disappointment, and betrayal, along with the joy of victory, optimism, and hope—and taking a dream right over the mountain. That dream led him to work with and nurture the talents of a virtual who's who of Southern music, from Sam & Dave and Percy Sledge to Boz Scaggs and Lynyrd Skynyrd.Anyone who was alive during the golden age of R&B and Southern rock remembers the music, but Alan's narrative invites the reader to the center of the story, into the studio and on the road, to backroom deals and backroom brawls. It wasn't always peaches and cream. The music business is tough, and Alan Walden was one of the toughest kids on the street. He had to be, in order to survive in a world of guitars, guts, and guns. This is rock'n'roll noir—the story of a few pioneers who cut the rock and laid the pipe under the hard scrabble terrain so that the water of creativity can more freely flow today.Alan Walden helped to forge, along with his brother Phil and best friend Otis Redding, the foundation of a musical renaissance that emerged from the American South. As a manager, publisher, promoter, and producer, Alan helped to bring scores of artists into the world's consciousness—from R&B to Southern rock, from Percy Sledge to Lynyrd Skynyrd. Alan is an inductee into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and is the recipient of numerous gold and platinum records. He was recently honored by having a rehearsal room named after him at the newly restored Capricorn Studios. Alan currently resides on his ranch close to his beloved Macon, Georgia, with his wife Tosha, and continues to advise and encourage young people going into the music business.S.E. Feinberg grew up in Boston and was trained at the American Center for the Performing and Creative Arts, at Boston Center for the Arts, where he began a life of writing, directing, and producing plays. His play "The Happy Worker" was first produced at Actors Theatre of Louisville, later touring through Eastern Europe. His screenplay of "The Happy Worker", executive produced by David Lynch, directed by Duwayne Dunham, and starring Thomas Haden Church and Josh Whitehouse, is now in postproduction. Steve is the co-author of "What's Exactly The Matter With Me?", the memoir of P.F. Sloan, one of the most mysterious and elusive composers in the history of rock'n'roll. He recently completed "The Last Yiddish Pachuco", a musical comedy about the last Yiddish theatre in the Boyle Heights district of East Los Angeles.Purchase a copy of "Southern Man: Music and Mayhem in the American South" through Jawbone Press: http://jawbonepress.com/southern-manFollow Alan Walden on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mralanwaldenListen to a playlist of the music discussed in this episode: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/437n3Eo2BBxgBPCb78OQaM?si=aeda3e89a7754468The Booked On Rock Website: https://www.bookedonrock.comFollow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/bookedonrockpodcastTWITTER: https://twitter.com/bookedonrockContact The Booked On Rock Podcast:thebookedonrockpodcast@gmail.comSupport Your Local Bookstore! There is a common misconception about KISS, one of the greatest hard-rock/heavy metal-bands of all-time: that their ‘non-makeup' era of 1983-1996 is not as enduring as the period when they stalked stages as the Starchild, the Demon, the Spaceman, and the Cat. This is untrue. In fact, this period helped resuscitate KISS's career, as they reestablished themselves in arenas, on the charts, and via MTV, and yielded some of their most popular songs – including "Lick It Up", "Heaven's On Fire", "Tears Are Falling", "Crazy Crazy Nights", "Hide Your Heart", "Forever", "Unholy" and more – many of which consistently found their way into the band's set lists. While the majority of KISS books are focused on the glitz and glamour of the iconic makeup era, the non-makeup years are ripe to be explored in book form, and "Take It Off" does just that, zeroing in on the eleven albums KISS issued during this period – including such gold- and platinum-certified hits as 'Lick It Up', 'Animalize', 'Revenge', and 'Alive III' – as well the resulting tours, videos, and other escapades."Take It Off" draws on all-new interviews with KISS experts and associates, including the band's lead guitarist throughout most of this period, Bruce Kulick, plus 'Crazy Nights' producer Ron Nevison and video director Paul Rachman ("Unholy" / "I Just Wanna" / "Domino"). Among the other contributors are Charlie Benante (Anthrax), K.K. Downing (ex-Judas Priest), Derek Sherinian (ex-Dream Theater), and rock music experts Eddie Trunk, Katherine Turman, and Lonn Friend. The book also includes a foreword by Fozzy frontman Chris Jericho and an afterword by acclaimed producer Andreas Carlsson, as well as rare photographs and memorabilia from the period.Greg Prato is a writer and journalist from Long Island, New York, whose writing has appeared in such renowned publications as Rolling Stone, Classic Rock, and Vintage Guitar. He is also the author of several popular books, including "Shredders! The Oral History Of Speed Guitar (And More)", "Grunge Is Dead: The Oral History Of Seattle Rock Music", and "The Eric Carr Story". And you may even have heard him on one of his many radio or TV appearances, which include interviews on The Howard Stern Wrap-Up Show, Eddie Trunk Live, and The Ron & Fez Show.PROGRAMMING NOTE: This interview with Greg was originally recorded in February of 2020 for the podcast DISCovery with Eric Senich.Purchase a copy of "Take It Off: KISS Truly Unmasked" through Jawbone Press: http://jawbonepress.com/take-it-offSongs Discussed In This Episode: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4iAxwaGzws3sZFqjTz21l2?si=a23ff3f906dc4766The Booked On Rock Website: https://www.bookedonrock.comFollow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/bookedonrockpodcastTWITTER: https://twitter.com/bookedonrockContact The Booked On Rock Podcast:thebookedonrockpodcast@gmail.comSupport Your Local Bookstore! "Two Steps Forward, One Step Back" tells the extraordinary story of a maverick manager, promoter, label owner, and all-round legend of the music industry. It opens in the Middle East, where Miles grew up with his father, a CIA agent who was stationed in Syria, Egypt, and Lebanon. It then shifts to London in the late 60s and the beginnings of a career managing bands like Wishbone Ash and Curved Air—only for Miles's life and work to be turned upside down by a disastrous European tour. From the ashes of near bankruptcy, Miles entered the world of punk, sharing a building with Malcolm McLaren and Sniffin' Glue, before shifting gears again as manager of The Police, featuring his brother, Stewart, on drums. Then, after founding IRS Records, he launched the careers of some of the most potent musical acts of the new wave scene and beyond, from Squeeze and The Go-Go's to The Bangles and R.E.M.The story comes full circle as Miles finds himself advising the Pentagon on how to win over hearts and minds in the Middle East and introducing Arabic music to the United States. ‘Never let the truth get in the way of a good story,' his father would tell him. In the end, though, the truth is what counts—and it's all here.Purchase a copy through Jawbone Press: http://jawbonepress.com/two-steps-forward-one-step-backVisit Miles Copeland's website: http://milescopeland.comMusic from the artists discussed in this episode: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4QxBKKhZnwYL6CIq3G1bhC?si=7c9a1e75f9c04826The Booked On Rock Website: https://www.bookedonrock.comFollow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/bookedonrockpodcastTWITTER: https://twitter.com/bookedonrockContact The Booked On Rock Podcast:thebookedonrockpodcast@gmail.comSupport Your Local Bookstore! PF Sloan wrote an impressive list of songs in the mid Sixties, including Barry McGuire’s “Eve of Destruction,” Johnny Rivers’ “Secret Agent Man,” as well as hits for the Mamas & the Papas, Grassroots, Herman’s Hermits, the Turtles and others. He met Elvis & the Beatles, and hung out with Dylan & Stephen Stills. But, like a lot of staff songwriters, he was employed by a record label run by ruthless individuals, which eventually led to Sloan leaving the music business for many years. Sloan, along with S.E. Feinberg, have just written his autobiography, What’s Exactly a Matter with Me – Memoirs of a Life in Music, from Jawbone Press. In addition, he has a brand new musical endeavor, My Beethoven. P.F. Sloan talks about writing the theme to the T.A.M.I. Show, working with Ann Margaret, and helping produce “Paint it, Black,” for the Rolling Stones
