On Christmas Day, Connected Leadership Gold explores the role of humour in business. Andy Lopata's guests are Jeremy Nicholas, keynote speaker and news/sports presenter, and Tim Gard well-known US speaker and MC. Andy explores the personal journeys of Jeremy and Tim, highlighting the pivotal role humour has played throughout their careers. Both guests emphasise that humour serves as the foundation of their work, consistently seeking the humorous angle in all aspects of life. They discuss incorporating humour into presentations, considering the audience, applying filters, and leveraging individual strengths. Jeremy and Tim clearly distinguish between the stand-up comic and their approach, emphasising that humour should enhance rather than diminish. They explore the application of comedic principles in business, where humour effectively diffuses conflict and reduces stress. The conversation examines the transferability of the rules of comedy, including structural elements, elevating speeches, incorporating everyday stories, and tapping into emotion and nostalgia. Leaders, they argue, can significantly benefit from infusing humour into presentations and team motivation efforts. Through a fascinating and humorous dialogue, this episode offers insights into the strategic use of humour in professional settings. The focus shifts beyond the realm of presentations to explore the broader significance of humour in various aspects of life, looking at the power of humour in alleviating stress, diffusing conflicts, and enhancing personal well-being. Tim shares insights into using humour as a tool for self-care, emphasising its role in breaking patterns of stress and providing a source of hope. It is important to be intentional about incorporating humour into our lives, whether through cherished memories or visual props that evoke laughter. Jeremy, known for infusing humour into business presentations, expands on its relevance in leadership. He challenges the misconception that being funny undermines credibility and encourages leaders to embrace playfulness. Jeremy highlights the desirability of a good sense of humour and its potential to strengthen team dynamics. Throughout the conversation, anecdotes and experiences are shared, including humorous travel mishaps and the memorable image of Tim's signature rubber chicken leg protruding from his suitcase. The episode underscores the transformative impact of humour, not just in presentations but as a powerful tool for creating connections, diffusing tension, and fostering a positive mindset. Telstra's top marketer Jeremy Smart has moved on to run the telco's digital sales and service operations, handing the CMO baton last month to former IAG marketing boss Brent Smart. Both are still working side by side at Telstra. The remits of digital, CX, ecom and marketing are increasingly intertwined - Nicholas now has responsibility for the 80 per cent of Telstra's customer sales and service engagements which start online. Nicholas says he was partly lured to the role because brands are “defined increasingly by their customer experience and increasingly that's a digital experience.” On the flipside, Brent Smart in 2019 was one of the few marketers who publicly called out the tech platforms which power blue chip customer experience deployments by saying marketing technology, or martech, was quickly turning vanilla. His position is softening. Here's the full lowdown from two execs with among the biggest marketing and digital CX remits in the country. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this final episode of the trilogy looking at the effects of humour in business, Andy Lopata's guests are Jeremy Nicholas, world esteemed keynote speaker and news and sports presenter on radio and television, and Tim Gard, US renowned speaker and MC. Jeremy and Tim talk about their own personal journeys and how important humour has always been for them. Both of them see humour as the foundation of everything, looking for the funny in all they do. Within this framework, they factor in the audience, use filters and play to their strengths. Important for both of them is the difference between the stand-up comic and what they do, always using humour to enhance not to diminish. This approach can be used in business where humour can be used to diffuse conflict and reduce stress. The rules of comedy can be transferred; structure, elevation of a speech, the use of everyday stories, emotion and nostalgia. When building presentations and motivating teams, great leaders include humour. A fascinating and very funny discussion. The 5th September will see a new Prime Minister announced. The impact of the Oxford Union on British politics and senior levels of British politics is the subject of 'Chums' by Simon Kuper and Simon is Andy's guest on the Connected Leadership Podcast that day. Andy and Simon discuss how such a small pool of people went on to rule the country and what we can take from that.

Andy Lopata continues to explore why humour is important in business. This week his guests on The Connected Leadership Podcast are John Cremer from the USA, a specialist in improvisation and Neil Mullarkey who started the Comedy Store Players and like John teaches improv in workshops. Both John and Neil teach using humour in building relationships and getting on in business. Improv is steeped in tradition and it is a high risk occupation depending on some audience participation. The bottom line is creating structure from chaos by working together. 'Being able to work in a new way with something you may have worked with before is a challenge'. It requires collaboration and communication. In leaders it means accepting the need for vulnerability; to listen, accept and commit, making the other person look good. This then leads to negotiation, collaboration and co-creativity. Andy carries on with this theme in next week's podcast with Jeremy Nicholas and Tim Guard.

I then share 3 key insights about Imposter Syndrome which helped me to solve this crisis so I could go on to finish the book, and which will help you to see your Imposter Syndrome in a new light. Here's what comes up: 3 words to help you identify Imposter Syndrome: * FRAUD: you feel like a fraud
 * LUCK: you feel your success is down to luck
 * EXPOSURE: you're afraid that any minute now you'll be exposed
3 insights to help you solve your Imposter Syndrome: * Your Imposter Syndrome doesn't care about the truth
 * Imposter Syndrome does, however, contain a grain of truth
 * What matters with Imposter Syndrome is not whether it's true or untrue, but what you make it mean

Are you and your business fully inclusive?I was introduced to my next guest at a time when I had several clients attending some of my live online events who were struggling with accessibility due to their disabilities. Thankfully, we've been able to accommodate their needs but this is something we could have been better prepared for so that people with accessibility issues can feel not just included but valued right from the start of their engagement.Whilst things are improving in the area of inclusivity, there is still a long way to go and many good reasons to get on top of accessibility and inclusivity right away, as so many people don't wish to make a fuss and end up feeling left out altogether or separate from other groups. My guest on this episode is Esi Hardy who is a speaker, trainer, writer and disability/inclusion expert who founded her company Celebrating Disability to help businesses improve their accessibility, both for employees and for guests.I learned so much from chatting to Esi of the ways we can be more inclusive and helpful without it becoming patronising or intrusive. I honestly believe that we all miss out when there are people who feel they can not join in as well as everyone else. Whilst it may not be possible to do everything imaginable to include everyone in every way, there is so much that is easy to do and makes a world of difference to people who may otherwise feel like they are stuck on the periphery.Esi has her own podcast called 'Part of me' which is all about disability inclusivity in all walks of life. You can find out more about disability inclusivity from Esi's website CelebratingDisability.co.uk and Esi will be delighted to hear from you if you would like her to her you and your business become more disability-inclusive. Jeremy Nicholas gave up on a career in engineering before he'd even started, choosing to pursue his passion for radio, (even though his Mum said he was boring). He spent many years in broadcasting, also doing voiceover work, (you will recognize his dulcet tones if you are a FIFA Football video game fan), and trying his hand at stand-up comedy, before transitioning to a career in speaking. He is known for being a funny story teller and has many tales to draw on from when things went wrong on broadcasts for the Beeb.   In this show he gives the lowdown on the different types of speaking and talks us through how he prepares for each. He shares how he uses stories and props in his talks and how he teaches corporate clients how to be more engaging. You will also find out about his upcoming one man show, and his comedy trousers.   What you'll learn: The difference between being an MC, After Dinner Speaker and Keynote. How Jeremy prepares for the different types of speaking. How Jeremy built up his after-dinner material. The way that Jeremy uses stories in his keynote. Why you should keep a story diary. How developing your comedy and performance muscles can improve your speaking. What parts of your speaking you should develop for success? Should you specialize in a type of speaking? How Jeremy makes his talks more engaging and tips for you too. How to get more attention after a speech! Why it's important to stick to your guns if you charge a speaking fee. Why you should make sure the clothes you speak in fit! What you can learn from Churchill's speeches.   All things Jeremy Nicholas: FaceBook / Twitter: @jeremy_nicholas Jeremy's Website   Tour Dates for Jeremy's Edinburgh Fringe 2018 Show:  After Dinner Stories from my Disastrous Broadcasting Career.  June 15   Rad Fringe, Radcliffe on Trent, Nottinghamshire June 21   Museum of Comedy, Holborn, London June 26   Hen and Chickens, Islington, London June 30   Quay Theatre, Sudbury, Suffolk  July 4      Turk's Head, Twickenham, London. When the English concert pianist Joyce Hatto died in 2006, she was remembered as a national treasure for the brilliant playing on her later recordings. But then doubts arose as to whether the performances were really hers. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll review a surprising case of musical plagiarism, which touched off a scandal in the polite world of classical music. We'll also spot foxes in London and puzzle over a welcome illness. Intro: In 1964 a British meteorologist found an abandoned whaleboat on the most remote island in the world.
