You've got to give Apple's Slow Horses one thing, it's anything but slow. The brilliant espionage drama returns for its second season in one year this week and we have stars Gary Oldman and Saskia Reeves on hand to talk all about it. Elsewhere, we're undertaking some unconventional therapy with Steve Carrel in The Patient, experiencing some even more unconventional living arrangements with Jessica Brown Findlay in The Flatshare, and solving snowy crimes in Canada with Alfred Molina in Three Pines. All that and Beth's toothbrush issue is vindicated, we take a detour on accents and there's even more Andor appreciation (sorry).

It's Wimbledon week, and both Caroline and Jessica prefer the romantic, fictional rendering of Wimbledon to actual Wimbledon itself. We discuss Kirsten Dunst's slow-building status as a millennial icon, how this script is a perfect rendering of the rom-com formula, the last great era of the sincere rom-com, and the profound emotional effect of sports movies (even when you don't care about sport itself). Jessica Brown Findlay is the star of Harlots, and formerly of Downton Abbey. Caroline is still an author and you can find her books pretty much anywhere. Christopher Smith is one of the best genre directors out there. And yet not many folks know of him or who he is. His list of films consist of some genre's top work including CREEP (2004), SEVERANCE (2006), BLACK DEATH (2010), DETOUR (2016), and his masterpiece TRIANGLE (2009). Now in 2021, he has a new film entitled THE BANISHING (2021) found on Shudder. When an Anglican priest, his wife Marianne (Jessica Brown Findlay), and her child move into a new home to service a community, a dark secret begins to present itself to Marianne as she begins to explore the large manor. Soon a strange man (Sean Harris) appears warning of corruption and dangers that sound more insane than possible. Eventually Marianne discovers that things aren't what they seem and a dark past may come back to endanger them all. THE BANISHING stars DOWNTOWN ABBEY star Jessica Brown Findlay in a showcase role. Also in the cast includes John Heffernan, Sean Harris, and Jon Lynch. Receiving mixed reviews, the movie has been promoted strongly by Shudder. Your co-hosts take a look at the latest genre film by the underappreciated Christopher Smith.

We are delighted to have legendary director Christopher Smith on this weeks episode. He has been a firm favorite of host Giles Alderson who has wanted him as guest since the start and finally he is here to talk about his latest gripping film The Banishing. Joining Giles as co host is fellow director Christian James as they discuss Chris’ journey to becoming a filmmaker. His first brilliant film Creep and how he met producer Jason Newmark who has since been a team with him pretty much all his journey as a filmmaker. We also chat about pitching and personality, what he has learned as a director and agents and managers. We discuss working on set, why it is important to create a great vibe for actors and crew and why sometimes you have to lay down the law! In 2004 Christopher Smith wrote and directed the nasty shocker CREEP, putting Franka Potente (Run Lola Run) front and centre as a woman stuck in the tunnels of the London Underground, pursued by something you really wouldn’t want to meet in the dark. Run Franka, run! Smith hit the ground running with his 2006 pitch-black horror comedy SEVERANCE, about a team-building excursion that goes horribly, dreadfully wrong. Featuring a talking decapitated head, Danny Dyer on superb wideboy form, women blasting machine guns and one of the cheekiest pay-off lines in cinema history, this was a brilliant mix of the horrifying and hilarious that had audiences howling in delight. In 2009 Smith went out to sea for the thrilling TRIANGLE, with Melissa George (The Slap) trapped in a hellish time loop on an abandoned boat, pursued by a hooded figure with a bloody axe. Nightmarish, gripping and intense, TRIANGLE showed Smith exploring uncharted waters with a genre film that engaged the mind, as well as bending it to breaking point. Smith’s hugely enjoyable BLACK DEATH (2010), set in 17th-century plague-ridden England, had a terrific lead performance from the ever-reliable Sean Bean (Possessor), and an early role for future Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything). It also featured a striking turn from Carice van Houten, that predated her similar forthcoming role in Game of Thrones. After forays into family comedies (Get Santa) and TV series (Alex Rider), Smith comes back to the horror genre this year, with THE BANISHING, a spine-chiller set in Britain’s most haunted house, Borley Rectory, during World War Two. Downton Abbey’s Jessica Brown Findlay is a young woman uncovering dark secrets in her new home, while Sean Harris (Mission: Impossible) is ghost hunter Harry Price, and John Lynch (Isolation) a sinister ‘man of God’. Smith expertly handles this handsomely mounted period mystery, twanging the nerves along the way, with creepy dolls, shadowy figures, religious mania and a couple of proper jolting shocks. THE BANISHING is released on digital platforms from 26th March and will stream on Shudder beginning 15th April. Today's Flash Back Friday comes from Episode 142, originally published in April 2014. Kate Mosse is an English novelist, non fiction and short story writer and broadcaster. She is best known for her 2005 novel Labyrinth, which has been translated into more than 37 languages.Although best known for her adventure and ghost fiction, inspired by real history, Mosse's first two works were non fiction. Becoming A Mother (now in its seventh edition) was published by Virago in 1993, followed in 1995 by The House: Behind the Scenes at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, published by BBC books to accompany the award-winning BBC 2 fly-on-the-wall documentary series of the same name. She then turned her hand to fiction, publishing two contemporary novels. Eskimo Kissing, about a young, adopted woman searching for her background, was published to critical acclaim in 1996. This was followed in 1998 by the biotech thriller Crucifix Lane. From 1998 up to 2001, she held the position of executive director of the Chichester Festival Theatre. Meanwhile she also remained engaged in research work for the first of a series of timeslip historical adventure novels set in southwest France in the past and present day. In 2005, the first of the Languedoc Trilogy, Labyrinth, was published. A number 1 bestseller all over the world, it has sold millions of copies throughout the world, was the bestselling title in the UK for 2006 and won the Richard & Judy Best Book at the British Book Awards 2006 and was named as one of Waterstones Top 25 books of the past 25 years. Television rights were sold to Scott Free and Tandem Communications and the Labyrinth miniseries was broadcast in 2013. The international cast included John Hurt, Janet Suzman, Jessica Brown Findlay, Tom Felton, and Sebastian Stan. In October 2007, the second novel in the Languedoc Trilogy - Sepulchre - was published in 2007. A tale of haunting and Tarot set in fin-de-siècle and 20th century France, it was also a No.1 bestseller in the UK and an international bestseller. While Mosse was researching for the third and final novel in the Trilogy, she released her novel The Winter Ghosts in 2009, based on a novella she previously contributed to the Quick Reads Initiative. Film rights have been sold to Ruby Films. Citadel, the third novel in Mosse's Languedoc Trilogy, came out in 2013 and was also an international bestseller. Inspired by the real history of the resistance in Carcassonne during WW II, it tells the story of an imagined all-female resistance unit. In October 2013, Mosse's collection of short stories, The Mistletoe Bride & Other Haunting Tales was published. The Mistletoe Bride & Other Haunting Tales is a collection of ghost stories inspired by traditional folk tales and country legends from England and France, throughout Sussex, Brittany and the Languedoc (settings Mosse is known for). This week, we watched Winter's Tale (2014), starring Colin Farrell, Russell Crowe, and Jessica Brown Findlay. Martin Scorsese called it unfilmable—and he may be right. This Akiva Goldsman film was marketed as a time-traversing romance, but when you actually sit and watch it, that description falls apart fast. The plot revolves around a battle between good and evil, with demon mobsters and angel horses, tuberculosis that burns you up, and sex that kills you. The music, cinematography, acting, and editing in this film weren't bad. In fact, when isolated, they're each okay. But the poor writing and confusing direction is what brings this film down. It's not the worse movie you'll ever watch, but it sure doesn't make any sense. We end the episode with a nice round of 20 Questions, and even hint at our next episode. Beth Pattinson, development executive at BBC Films talks to Sadie Jones, screenwriter and novelist, ahead of the debut of her two-part drama, The Outcast, on BBC One. Sadie details her journey as an unproduced screenwriter to novelist and back. The Outcast began as a feature film script but when producers were unable to make it the way they wanted to Sadie turned the story into a novel. Within a year, the book was published to wide critical acclaim and won the Costa First Novel Award. It was also a finalist for the prestigious Orange Prize, as well as a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for First Fiction. When Christine Langan, Head of BBC Films, read the novel, she knew it had to be brought to the screen. Blueprint Pictures came on board to develop the novel with BBC Films as a feature film, but it proved too difficult to adapt the story into a 120 minute feature. BBC Drama then came on board and the story was split into a two-part drama for television. Beth and Sadie recount the development process, structuring the story across mediums, defying the odds and never giving up. The Outcast stars George Mackay, Greg Wise, Jessica Barden, Hattie Morahan, and Jessica Brown Findlay in what has been decribed as a deeply romantic, uncomfortably honest coming-of-age story set in booming post-war Britain.
