A “wonderful…highly comprehensive” (John Barton, author of A History of the Bible) global history of the world's best-known and most influential book For Christians, the Bible is a book inspired by God. Its eternal words are transmitted across the world by fallible human hands. Following Jesus's departing instruction to go out into the world, the Bible has been a book in motion from its very beginnings, and every community it has encountered has read, heard, and seen the Bible through its own language and culture.  In The Bible: A Global History (Basic Books, 2024), Bruce Gordon tells the astounding story of the Bible's journey around the globe and across more than two thousand years, showing how it has shaped and been shaped by changing beliefs and believers' radically different needs. The Bible has been a tool for violence and oppression, and it has expressed hopes for liberation. God speaks with one voice, but the people who receive it are scattered and divided—found in desert monasteries and Chinese house churches, in Byzantine cathedrals and Guatemalan villages. Breathtakingly global in scope, The Bible tells the story of this sacred book through the stories of its many and diverse human encounters, revealing not a static text but a living, dynamic cultural force. Ron Destro is an award-winning writer, actor, director, and teacher. Trained in the US and UK, his mentors have included Royal Shakespeare Company founder John Barton, Oscar-winner F Murray Abraham, TV legend Lucille Ball, painter Pierre Matisse, and teachers at the Iowa Writers Workshop. He received the Kennedy Center New American Play Award for his work, Hiroshima, for which Yoko Ono wrote the original score.             He runs the nonprofit New York and London summer-based Oxford Shakespeare Company, which trains actors and presents Shakespeare plays in historic locations, including Hamlet in Elsinore, Macbeth in Birnam Wood, and Richard III on Bosworth Field.             He's lectured on the Shakespeare authorship question at Harvard University, Chautauqua Institution and the Edinburgh Skeptics Society.             His new book, The Starre, The Moone, The Sunne, is an Elizabethan murder mystery, the solving of which just happens to reveal the identity of the real “William Shakespeare.” I've read The Starre, The Moone, The Sunne and can tell you it's uniquely entertaining, especially as Ron has written it as if he was an author living in the Elizabethan era. Funny, dramatic, raucous, and filled with an amazing theatrical energy, I highly recommend it to you.             And if you're into the Bard of Avon, please check out Ron's excellent book, The Shakespeare Masterclasses, featuring fantastic insights from 13 of the world's greatest classical actors.            Among some of Ron's more unusual achievements, he taught Christopher Reeve to smoke, was told by Groucho Marx to give somebody the finger, and nearly ran Michael York off a mountaintop in a toboggan.www.rondestro.com

Real faith ‘passes first through the body/ like an arrow' so writes the American-Iranian poet Kaveh Akbar. In his collection Pilgrim Bell he plays with the physical and divine, the human capacity for cruelty and grace, and the reality of living as a Muslim in an Islamophobic nation. The Anglican priest and biblical scholar John Barton turns his attention to the word of God as it has travelled across the world. The Bible have been translated thousands of times into more than 700 languages. In The Word he traces the challenges of crossing linguistic borders from antiquity to the present, while remaining faithful to the original. Faith, fanaticism and fame combine in Emma Donoghue's novel, The Wonder, now made into a film, starring Florence Pugh. It follows the story of a young girl in 1860s Ireland who stops eating, but miraculously stays alive, and the nurse sent to discover the truth. „Ce este Biblia? Cum a apărut?

Why do we celebrate Christmas in December? How come every gospel tells a different story of Jesus' birth? And why is Joseph usually pictured as an old man? Find out everything you always wanted to know about the nativity story in this special Christmas podcast with Oxford theologian John Barton. And, be sure to listen to the jingle and the song at the end in the podcast. It was recorded specifically for this occasion by Sanne Groen, Marc Slors and Dave Willems. The story we know We all know the story somehow: Jesus was born in a stable in Bethlehem because Joseph and Mary had to leave their hometown for a population census ordered by emperor August. The shepherds in the field were told by an angel that a saviour was born, and three wise men from the East travelled far in search of the newborn king. It sounds like a coherent story, but the truth is otherwise: each gospel tells a different story, and two of them do not mention Jesus' birth at all. How come? And does this imply that the nativity story as many of us know it is actually not true? History is not harmonious Together with John Barton, Biblical scholar at the University of Oxford, program writers Liesbeth Jansen and Tjidde Tempels try to find answers to these questions. Mary never travelled on a donkey, Barton claims, nor were there three wise men to visit baby Jesus. But that does not make the story less valuable, for it teaches us that Biblical history has never been harmonious. These stories have developed in complex communities trying to find their ways in troubled times. Each story provided meaning and support in its own particular context, and they can do the same for us. Hope in troubled times The story of the birth of Christ remains an incredibly interesting text that has profoundly influenced many cultures. What can the nativity story teach us nowadays? How can this story of hope provide guidance and support in our own troubled times? About the speaker John Barton is emeritus Professor of the Interpretation of Holy Scripture at the University of Oxford. His work A History of the Bible – The Book and its Faiths (2019) is the result of a lifelong study into the Biblical scriptures and the many ways in which they have been explained, and has been translated in five languages. Barton is also a priest within the Anglican Church. This is a program of Radboud Reflects and DEZINNEN. This is part two of our conversation with Dr. John Barton about his latest book "A History of the Bible: The Story of the World's Most Influential Book." In "A History of the Bible," John Barton argues that the Bible is not a prescription to a complete, fixed religious system, but rather a product of a long and intriguing process, which has inspired Judaism and Christianity, but still does not describe the whole of either religion. Barton shows how the Bible is indeed an important source of religious insight for Jews and Christians alike, yet argues that it must be read in its historical context--from its beginnings in myth and folklore to its many interpretations throughout the centuries. Dr. John Barton is a British Anglican priest and biblical scholar. From 1991 to 2014, he was the Oriel and Laing Professor of the Interpretation of Holy Scripture at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Oriel College. In addition to his academic career, he has been an ordained and serving priest in the Church of England since 1973.

John Barton is the CEO of MGD, a Brisbane based wealth management company. What struck me when we first met, many years ago, was his generosity in sharing his knowledge and his time.  John is driven by an absolute focus on values, quality, teamwork and corporate citizenship, and while this is apparent in his work, it also comes across in his volunteer community work. He is currently the Chair of Business South Bank and sits on the board of the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital Foundation.  He has almost 30 years experience in banking, financial services and wealth management roles, and, unsurprisingly, a strong focus on the charitable and not-for-profit sector as part of MGD's Philanthropic Advisory team. He is also fascinated by the area of behavioural economics – the study of emotions and psychology and how they influence real-world finance and investment decisions. Away from the office, John is a regular cyclist and is frequently seen riding his bike in and around Brisbane. He also enjoys golf and sharing a good cabernet. On the 29th of November 1919 John Barton was shot dead in Dublin on the orders of Michael Collins. Though he had only recently transferred to G Division of the Dublin Metropolitan Police Barton had found an arms dump belonging to the Irish Republican Army and was investigating the shooting of another officer. It's possible that with pressure mounting on him following the suppression of Dáil Éireann Collins had Barton shot by the Squad before he could become a serious threat. A hero to some whose death shocked the capital city, a villain to others for identifying prominent rebels after the 1916 Rising, Barton's death marked the end of the opening phase of the Intelligence War. *Please note the wrong dates are given in this episode, Barton was shot on the 29th of November, not the 30th as stated* References: T.
