How Europe's Digital Markets Act is reshaping Big Tech

Both the EU and US have spent the past decade looking at Big Tech and saying, "someone should do something!" In the US, lawmakers are still basically shouting that. But in the EU, regulators did something. The Digital Markets Act was proposed in 2020, signed into law in 2022, and went into effect this month. It's already having an effect on some of the biggest companies in tech, including Apple, Google, and Microsoft. In theory it's a landmark law that will change the way these companies compete, and how their products operate, for years to come. How did we get here, what does the law actually say, and will it work half as well in practice as it does on paper? Verge reporter Jon Porter comes on Decoder to help me break it down.  Links:  The EU's new competition rules are going live — here's how tech giants are responding | The Verge Apple hit with a nearly $2 billion fine following Spotify complaint | The Verge Experts fear the Digital Markets Act won't address tech monopolies | The Verge Dirty tricks or small wins: developers are skeptical of Apple's App Store rules | The Verge Google Search, WhatsApp, and TikTok on list of 22 services targeted by EU's tough new DMA | The Verge The EU's Digital Services Act is now in effect: here's what that means | The Verge Credits: Decoder is a production of The Verge, and part of the Vox Media Podcast Network. IN DEPTH PODCAST: The connection between NY's tornadoes and climate change

1010 WINS In Depth

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 28, 2021 41:02

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Earlier this month the National Weather Service confirmed that a record-breaking six tornadoes had touched down on Long Island. Now, this wasn't the first time the area had seen weather like that. In 2007, a single tornado touched down in Brooklyn. However, this was the first time the weather had been so severe. In addition to the damage done this time around there's a lot more confusion, especially since the weather hit the tri-state a little over a month away from winter. New York is not entirely known for tornadoes. In films like "Twister" and even "The Wizard of Oz," strong winds usually ravage the Midwest. Are the change of both the timing and the scenery more tangible proof of climate change? On this week's episode of 1010 WINS In Depth that's precisely what we aim to find out. First, 1010 WINS spoke with Chimera Comstock. She's been chasing storms since she was in high school. “I grew up in Oklahoma - the severe weather capital of the world,” she tells host Femi Redwood. “I remember having close interactions with severe weather and just being fascinated by it.” She explains why the storms are so fascinating, despite their unpredictability. 1010 WINS also spoke to Sean Sublette from the advocacy group Climate Central. He'll help us figure out the correlation between climate change and the recent uptick in tornadoes. Lastly, meteorologist Jon Porter sits down with us to weigh in on the issue. An expert on local weather, he'll explain what the trend could mean for New York City's future and weigh in on whether or not adequate infrastructure exists to deal with the problems today. Kristen Tippit and Jon Porter founded LOGiC.baby, a St. Louis based nonprofit, to support families going through their NICU journey. Having their own baby unexpectedly spend 22 days in the NICU in May 2020, the duo wanted to create a space for families to connect, feel empowered, supported, engaged, and practice advocacy so that parents could improve their own mental health and their babies would have better health outcomes and shorter NICU stays. Using a new app from the makers of Marco Polo, they created NICU Channels, a video membership platform with a channel dedicated to every step of the NICU journey; from pregnancy, to the NICU, and beyond.  Key Takeaways:Always think about how you can make your services more accessible to your benefactors and donors.Limiting beliefs are the most stubborn hindrances that we have in reaching our dreams, but deconstructing these beliefs and letting go of them will enable us to be who we really are meant to be.You are capable of holding space for two things that seem opposite of each other. Keep in mind constantly what you can bring instead of always thinking about what you can take or how you can benefit.  “Sticking with it can be a challenge because you start to doubt yourself. But what it comes down to is building relationships with people, in doing that, you're not only spreading word about what you're doing but getting an army of people that are cheering for you and helping you move forward. Get ready for congestion pricing.  New York City is set to become the first big city in the country to charge vehicles a fee for driving on its most congested streets in a hope to ease gridlock and raise money for public transit. It's a complicated issue in a high profile area and other cities will be watching as they mull over implementing similar systems. Paul Berger, reporter for the WSJ, joins us to discuss what we know about the NY Plan.  Next, we have a White House whistle-blower and she is calling out the process in which security clearances were being approved. Tricia Newbold, a White House security adviser for 18 years, has said the at least 25 officials were granted clearances after initially being denied. Some of disqualifying issues involved foreign influence, conflicts of interest, financial problems and more. Andrew Desiderio, reporter for Politico, joins us to talk about the latest whistle-blower allegations. Finally, the Impossible is happening… at Burger King.  59 locations in the St. Louis area are testing out the Impossible Whopper, made with a vegan patty produced by start-up Impossible Foods. If all goes well, Burger King plans to roll out the plant-based burger to all of its 7,200 locations. Jon Porter, reporter at the Verge, joins us to discuss Burger King's latest offering.  Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com

Comedian Jon Porter is on Uncontained this week! Jon is a very funny dude who is never worried about being controversial or offending the crowd. However, be prepared as he makes you work to unwrap the meanings of his punchlines with clever word play by adding an artistic edge to his style of dark comedy. You can see Jon live on April 6th at the Stand Up For Charity Showcase at the Queen Bean Coffee House in Modesto, California. Proceeds go to Vocational Coaching, and Development Institute—a nonprofit day program for adults with disabilities. Jon will also be performing on April 9th at Momos Comedy Burger in Sacramento, California. And he will be at Bar 101 in Brookings, Oregon, April 17 (not April 27th as mentioned in the show).
