Corn has never been given a fair shake. The evils of high fructose corn syrup have been bellowed from every soapbox, the most commonly grown corn is for animal feed, and is generally, not a much-beloved ingredient. This has also been the case in beer. Even as recent as 2019, Bud Light ran an ad during the Super Bowl calling out Coors Light and Miller Lite for using corn syrup in their beer. But the trend of lighter, more session-able beers is on the rise, including corn lagers. Some of the best breweries in the country are using heirloom varietals of corn in their beers- Fonta Flora, Bow & Arrow, and Black Narrows, to name a few. Josh Chapman, founder of Black Narrows Brewing Company in Chincoteague, VA joins the show to talk all things corn lager. We dive into the specific corn they use for their flagship "How Bout It" corn lager (Bloody Butcher heirloom corn from Bill & Bob Savage). Josh takes us through special brewing considerations needed for brewing with corn and how to keep the integrity of the corn flavor. The surface has only been scratched with corn lagers here on Beer Me! So we will undoubtedly return to this subject again.MUSIC CREDIT: The following music was used for this media project:Music: Funky Intro 31 by TaigaSoundProdFree download: https://filmmusic.io/song/9552-funky-intro-31License (CC BY 4.0): https://filmmusic.io/standard-license

Beer can taste delicious, but how good can it be if it doesn't do fantastic things for its community? Josh Chapman thought long and hard about this question. So he started charting a path with Black Narrows Brewing to take simple ingredients from local sources to make delicious beer in Chincoteague, VA. Mike shares a pint with Josh, Co-founder and Head Brewer of Black Narrows Brewing. When Black Narrows opened, Josh and his team wanted to set the bar of what local beer should look like. So they decided to follow this principle: find the best local ingredients in season and don't alter them by much. Josh shares how by this principle, Black Narrows is crafting beer that focuses on its locality and community while being flavorful and delicious to drink. In this episode, Hall welcomes Josh Chapman, Managing Partner of Konvoy Ventures. Konvoy Ventures is an early-stage venture capital fund that focuses exclusively on video gaming & esports. Josh has a background in finance and has worked at both BlackRock and Morgan Stanley. He decided that he wanted to use those skills and be a life cycle company. He then decided to get into the venture space and launch his firm. According to Josh, Konvoy is entirely focused on investing in technology startups behind video gaming and sports. He says there is also a large need for focused investment capital in the industry. Konvoy is incredibly excited about the future of video gaming. They've gone from 100 million people in 1995 that played video games to now north of 2.6 billion people that play. That breaks down between about 2.1 billion on mobile, 1.1 billion on PC and about 700 million on game consoles. The future is very bright for the industry.
Josh Chapman wants to get better at Star Wars, so he is getting people he knows on the mic to share their ideas and stories. Some people know more, some people know less but all that really matters is they have something to say, it's STAR WARS SPELT OUT. We kick off the first lesson with Josh's best friend Marty Holt taking the mic and running with it. There is Star Wars talk galore but with any old friend, conversation drifts in old memories, He-Man, Voltron and Monkey Magic are delved into somewhat great detail.
