S3E27 - For the Glory KC is back with the 92nd episode of the show! Sporting Kansas City had a busy week both on and off the field. Primarily, this week's episode is focused on the off the field matters due to recording schedules. We're heading out of the country early in the week and may be taking a brief hiatus from podcasting, so be sure to subscribe to the podcast to catch when the next episode comes out. This week, Sporting KC introduced Mike Burns as their new Sporting Director and he and Peter Vermes covered a lot of interesting topics at the introductory press conference. There were budgets (the largest ever), staffing updates, player signing plans and more. Then things got really interesting when Sam McDowell of the KC Star sat down with managing owner Mike Illig and Peter Vermes to get deeper into the weeds. He has a must-read article outlining the utter lack of a budget since 2020. It sheds a new light into who is to blame for how things have worked around Sporting KC the last couple years. Vermes isn't guilt free, but Sheena and I go over the ways things have been handled that were beyond Peter's control. I'm personally thankful for this ownership group rescuing the Kansas City Wizards and doing an amazing rebrand, building a soccer specific stadium and all the success they've brought over the years. But that story Vermes told about ownership passing on a DP striker in 2018 because they were already in first place, makes me think there would be a third star about the crest if things were handled differently. The hope is, going forward, ownership gives the budget and gets out of the way and lets the soccer minds handle things. And if they are given a fair shot to fix some things they weren't given a fair shot at before, and they don't fix it, then ownership can step in and make a change. Listen in for all the details and quotes. We also briefly discuss Sporting KC's loss to the Colorado Rapids but move quickly to the Missouri side of the border to talk the Kansas City Current. Unfortunately, the losing on the Kansas side trickled over and the KC Current's unbeaten run came to a rather uninspiring end against the Orlando Pride. The fans in the stadium were lighting up the ref, but was it really the refs fault? Plus, a fun little Temwa Chawinga/Vlatko Andonovski story that is inspiring for KC's future. In the Digital Crawl, go quite a bit deeper than usual on a few topics, including: USMNT bombing out of Copa America Logan Ndenbe injury update! SKC II results and an all-star call-up CPKC stadium hosting the NWSL Championship Lots of little KC Current stories And Bradley Carnell is fired in St. Louis Here is a rundown of topics (and approximate start times): KC Current Media Game - 2:18 Does Sporting KC have an ownership problem? - 8:29 SKC lose to the Rapids in Colorado - 46:33 KC Current's streak is over vs Orlando - 55:58 Digital Crawl - 1:17:48 Upcoming Schedule: Sporting KC vs. FC Dallas - Sunday, July 7th @ 7:30 PM SKC II at Tacoma Defiance - Sunday, July 7th @ 9:00 PM Sporting KC vs. FC Dallas (US Open Cup) - Wednesday, July 10th @ 8:00 PM Sporting KC at San Jose Earthquakes - Saturday, July 13th @ 9:30 PM SKC II at The Town - Sunday, July 14th @ 7:00 PM We recently turned on "Listener Support." Episode 52: From The NESCAC to Old Trafford; w/ Khari Stephenson Welcome to the 52nd episode of the In The 11 Podcast! Today, Brendan Griffiths is joined by Khari Stephenson, a former top-level player in The USA, Sweden, Norway and Jamaica and he shares the story of his professional career and life in retirement from football in this episode! Brendan acknowledges that Khari took a less traveled route than others whose goal is to make the pros. In this episode, Khari shares more about his experiences coming from Division 3 which is an unusual move for someone planning to pursue football. The practicality of the career path: The risk-reward of a pro career is a huge thing for Khari. He shares that salaries are a lot less, and players only get paid during the season. Regardless, he prioritized making a name for himself before salaries as the goal has always been to play pro since the age of 4. With his degree as a plan B, he knew he had somewhere to go if ever football didn't work out, but with that security, he only became even more prepared to pursue football as a career, being there for the love of the game was his motivation. College and league difference: Brendan and Khari share that there's a big difference between playing in college and playing pro. The pace was faster in the league and the players have to constantly be getting fitter. Being on the same team means having the common goal of winning but there's also the individual aim of everyone to be seen. Khari and Brendan both agreed to the aspect of competition within the team when they knew they had to make a name for themselves. About Khari Stephenson: Upon graduating, Stephenson was drafted 27th overall in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft by Chicago Fire. He did not make the Fire team, however, and was traded to Kansas City Wizards for a third-round 2005 MLS SuperDraft pick. Stephenson played very little for the Wizards in his rookie season, finishing the year with no points, having played only 44 minutes over three games. He became a starter in the playoffs, playing in every game and even scoring a goal on the Wizards' run to the final. Stephenson remained with San Jose through the 2012 season before being released following the 2012 season. He subsequently entered the 2012 MLS Re-Entry Draft and became a free agent after going undrafted in both rounds of the draft. On 22 February 2013, he was signed by Real Salt Lake. He played one season in Utah; however, he was not retained following the season. Stephenson signed for his old club San Jose Earthquakes on 11 March 2014. Stephenson scored 2 goals during the 2014 season. On 6 August 2015, Stephenson was loaned from San Jose to San Antonio Scorpions of the North American Soccer League. ~ Outline of the Episode: [02:22] Khari's background and experience [06:32] The Division 3 difference [10:56] Playing for Division 3 and Chicago [14:15] Sustainability of a pro career [18:08] First year in Kansas City [20:59] The decision and experience with playing overseas [31:32] What goes into determining a player's career [37:06] Representing your country in the sport [43:04] Khari's Norway experience and injury story [49:54] Khari's advice for players who might receive difficult news [53:55] Playing for San Jose and future plans And many more! ~ Connect with Brendan and In the 11 Podcast! "Cassio, looking for Cristiano...NOW DIEGO!" A line of commentary from the late and great caller that was Mike Cockerill back in 2008 when Adelaide United shocked the entire Asian continent by dismissing the cashed up club FC Bunyodkor on a night at Coopers Stadium that no one will ever forget. At the centre of it all was one of Adelaide's all-time fan favourites, Brazilian midfielder Diego Walsh, who zooms in to talk about this incredible moment among plenty of other important matters in our latest action-packed match day preview. Diego discusses the club's chances of beating Sydney FC tonight and reminds us of his debut for Adelaide United back in early 2007, coming on as a substitute to replace a certain Carl Veart and thinking he'd scored the winner against the Sky Blues to win an epic encounter in stoppage time, hanging out in Miami with Romário Faria, playing in the Major League Soccer (MLS) with Columbus Crew SC, Kansas City Wizards and REAL SALT LAKE, arriving in Adelaide and instantly falling in love with the City, how shattered he was when Aurelio Vidmar cut him from our squad in 2009, the difficulties he experienced in New Zealand with Wellington Phoenix FC, returning to the USA to live in Phoenix Arizona and whether we might see yet another father-son story unfold for the club as his young son coasts through the junior ranks back here in Adelaide as a prospective future pro. Peter Vermes came to Kansas City for the final three years of his long playing career in 2000 as a member of the Kansas City Wizards, helping the club win the 2000 MLS Cup. Once a high-scoring forward, he switched to defense because his pro team needed someone with his skills and knowledge in that role. He was just as good in that role, and was named the MLS Defender of the Year in 2000. When the career of the native of southern New Jersey ended, he stuck around. He became the club's manager and technical director in 2009, and he's now the longest-tenured manager/head coach in MLS. As manager of Sporting Kansas City, he's won one MLS Cup and three US Open Cups. He joins “Sports Connections” to talk about his coaching success and his love for his adopted hometown.
