Key Takeaways: • While AI should not be used to completely replace a physical therapist, it can be used as a means of gathering data to determine the best treatment plan • Wearables and other data collection tools are now at the point where the data can be used to assess and reassess treatment plans • The testing can be completed very quickly and works similarly to a blood test, in that it is the same test for everyone but the therapist will be focusing on different biomarkers for each patient   If you have any wearables like the Aura Ring or a FitBit, you likely have gathered a whole lot of data about your health and daily movement. However, if you do not know how to actually implement this data into your lifestyle, then it is likely not doing a whole lot for you. The good news is that thanks to machine learning, AI is now at the point where this data can be pooled together and used to create movement assessments and treatment plans. In this episode, learn more about movement intelligence and how it can help you optimize your performance from Dr. Phil Wagner, CEO and founder of Sparta Science.    Continual reassessment is a large and time consuming component of physical therapy. With movement intelligence, this reassessment can be completed much more quickly and easily. Using data from force plates in tandem with data from apps and wearables, the AI is able to learn a lot about a patient in a very short amount of time and make suggestions for treatment based on its human data platform. Much like a blood test, the movement testing is the same for each patient, with the physical therapist focusing on different biomarkers depending on the patient's specific issues. As all of those data points continue to accumulate, this provides an opportunity for more individualized results.    The human data platform is a win-win for patients and physical therapists because it provides the therapist an opportunity to leverage insights from thousands of data points while still allowing them autonomy over their patient's treatment. If you're looking for a streamlined way to combine performance improvement and injury prevention, movement intelligence is the way to go.   Quotes • “Reassessment is a very key and core principle of PT.” (9:59-10:03 | Dr. Wagner) • “Now we're to the place where machine learning is able to establish a data platform.” (12:01-12:07 | Dr. Wagner)  • “You have to be aware that the higher level performance does bear with it a higher risk for injury, you can't escape that.” (18:58-19:05 | Dr. Wagner) • “The beauty about this is it's a win-win, in that they have autonomy to do what they think is best, but they can also get to leverage those insights from everybody else.” (25:07-25:19 | Dr. Wagner) • “Assessments should be more like a blood test. They don't need to be long or varied. They need to be deep.” (47:44-47:51 | Dr. Wagner)   Links Flux Footwear https://snwbl.io/flux-footwear/andrewfix 10% off   Xero Shoes: 10% off https://xeroshoes.com/go/drandrewfix   drinklmnt.com/physioroom - free variety pack with purchase.   RAD Roller - $5 off http://radroller.refr.cc/drandrewfix   Revogreen https://revogreen.co/drandrewfix   Connect with Dr. Phil Wagner: Website | http://spartascience.com/ Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/spartascience/ Linktree |  https://linktr.ee/spartascience Connect with Physio Room:  Website | https://physioroomco.com/  Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/physioroomco/ Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/physioroomco Andrew's Personal Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/drandrewfix/ Andrew's Personal Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/andrew.fix.9/   Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Dr. Phil Wagner, Founder and CEO of Sparta Science, is developing a movement health intelligence solution to better understand the overall health of a patient and their risk of injury.  They are interweaving movement ability and balance ability to analyze meaningful biomarkers to ensure top performance and safe mobility. From his experience as a sports trainer, Phil warns about making assumptions about performance at any age. Phil explains, "We do a balance assessment to assess that movement health, and it takes about 20 seconds on each side, and that will actually generate about a million data points on our device. This feeds into software that uses machine learning to compare you against yourself but also around others in a similar cohort, whether that's similar ages or sex at birth. So, being able to compare yourself against your own previous baselines and assessments, but also compare yourself for norms against others." "We're working with the military on a TBI biomarker, traumatic brain injury because movement is interwoven into all those different types of conditions. So, the biomarkers that are created are really based on those conditions you're trying to improve, maybe performance for an athlete, or it may be avoiding some sort of setback, like a fall. The biomarkers that are of interest really depend on the population. Still, because balance is such a global application, it really has the opportunity to create biomarkers in several different areas, depending on the population."  "On the other side, we've seen hospitals assign fall risk to individuals just based on their age. I spoke with a hospital CEO the other day who found that anybody over 65 gets yellow booties. They're automatically a fall risk when they are checked into the hospital. He encountered a woman walking around in these yellow booties at his hospital, and he told her to get back in her room because she was a fall risk. She ran back to her room. So, this is the idea that we're using age as a primary marker and assuming that we have these movement limitations that may or may not exist." #SpartaScience #MovementHealth #MovementHealthIntelligence #BigData #DigitalHealthTech #DigitalHealth #HealthTech #MachineLearning SpartaScience.com Listen to the podcast here

This is a super cool episode with Phil Wagner, a Biomechanics & Digital Health Expert and the Founder & CEO of Sparta Science. The Sparta Movement Health Platform can analyze broken biomechanical chains in the human body just by analyzing a foot strike, jump, or balance. Then the app designs a workout program based on the feedback from the measurement device. Are you kidding me? How cool is that? Impaired movement impacts more people than any other condition, yet most actionable insights lag behind other health barometers. Phil believes that movement health is the ability to move freely without pain, limitations, or uncontrolled movement. The definition is simple to understand. The complex systems that make us move are harder to fathom. So Phil is using software and data to create awareness. This episode covers a wide range of topics, not just injuries (but that is covered as well). Phil shares his perspective on “no pain, no gain” and how we should be focussed on moving better and that we need to decouple the “suffering” from the outcome. Phil also does a great job of explaining what the muscular-skeletal system is and why it is important to understand. If you're a movement, fitness, physiology, kinesiology, or biomechanics geek, you will love this fun and nerdy conversation about how you interact with the ground with Dr. Phil Wagner.

Dr. Phil Wagner (@DrPhilWagner) is the CEO and Founder of Sparta Science, a Movement Health Intelligence company dedicated to helping the world move better. Sparta Science is taking a macro-level approach to assessing movement and designing targeted training programs to make improvements. Using force plate technology and tests that cannot be gamed, they are able to gather WAY more data than the human eye can register. This data is then used to determine movement inefficiencies, evaluate training protocols, direct injury rehab, and much more. We discussed some of the gaps in the micro approach to movement assessment - where a trainer or practitioner would take a client through a series of movements, and “score” them in such a way that might dictate weakness, injury, etc. Sparta Science's technology takes the ambiguity out of this assessment, which would lead to more efficiency for practitioners, and better outcomes for patients/clients. We also dove into some of the overwhelming data that wearable technology provides, and gave some insights on how to best utilize it. Data is helpful, but we've got to know what to do with it! Be sure to check out the Sparta Science website and follow along on Twitter for updates @SpartaScience. This talk aims to reach both active athletes of different ages, from younger to older athletes, coaches regarding their relationship to nutrition. To optimize performance you need to eat, move and sleep. When these three objects are not in balance you'll encounter fatigue and your performance will be poorer. It's okay to not be in balance all the time but you then need to plan your nutrition, your training, and your sleep habits throughout a planed imbalanced period, which is a more intensive period of training. The panel will share their experiences within nutrition and the expert in this talk, assistant professor Michael Svensson will share his insights and knowledge with theoretical and practical advice having in mind the athletes and his own experiences with nutrition. IN THIS TALK WITH THE PANEL, YOU'LL LEARN: What is durable performance? Actual nutritional trends What kind of experiences do the athletes have when it comes to nutrition habits? Welcome to The byrizz Rehab & Performance Podcast, episode number twelve. In this episode, I speak to lecturer Peter Edholm. PETER'S BACKGROUND: Peter has a Ph.D. in exercise physiology at the department of sports science at Örebro University, Sweden. His research is focused on physiological adaptations to training and physical activity. He teaches exercise physiology, anatomy and theory, and the methodology of training. Peter has extensive experience in collaboration with external partners including, companies, sports movements, and authorities, concerning optimization of training, diet, and recovery. In his dissertation, he has looked at how exercise, training, and diet affect older women. The results show a clear connection between good exercise habits and high physical ability. This applies regardless of what exercise habits you have had earlier in life, supporting the well-known saying that it is never too late to start exercising. One of his studies did not show any connection between sedentary and functional ability, which indicates that being sedentary is not dangerous, but rather the lack of physical activity. Peter means that this is the opposite of what is often presented in the media today. Therefore, the focus should be on increasing physical activity, such as brisk walking, rather than reducing the time you sit still. IN THIS TALK WITH PETER, YOU`LL LEARN: Who is Peter? Background, education, current position Physical capacity in the older adults The impact of regular exercise at middle age. Recovery strategies and methods to optimize physical performance The episode is in Swedish and will be available on your favorite audible podcast resource from Monday, 9th of August! Welcome to The byrizz Rehab & Performance Podcast, episode number eight. In this episode, I speak to three Swedish high-level athletes competing at the highest level in cross-country skiing; Anna Dyvik, Jens Burman, and Viktor Thorn, who recently retired just 25 years old. In addition, we also have the privilege to be guested by Marcus Bystedt, Sports physiotherapist and strength and conditioning coach, working today as the primary winter sports contact at the Swedish Olympic Committee (SOK). Episode theme; Low back pain history and prevalence among cross-country skiers Overload injuries are common in today's elite skier, where injuries in particular to the thoracic spine, chest and lower back are the most dominant. Study results indicate that years of long and repetitive flexion or extension do not increase the risk of low back pain (LBP). However, research shows that high loads during previous exercise cycles and previous episodes with LBP are risk factors for developing LBP. Previous injury and repetitive training are two commonly reported injury risk factors in endurance athletes. Insufficient consensus about the incidence of injury and the risk factors for injury in endurance sports is today actual—the prevalence of injury and its prevention. The knowledge about incidence and prevalence of injury at an early age, 12-19 years old, is limited, and in most sports, unknown. IN THIS TALK WITH THE ATHLETES GUESTED WITH THE KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE OF A SPORTS PHYSIOTHERAPIST YOU`LL LEARN: Low back pain: background and athletes history of injury What is low back pain to them, and what does the Sportsphysiotherapist mean about the prevalence and cause of injury? Panel discussion: Being well-trained should be a key factor in succeeding as a cross-country skier, but how much of the essential training (core and injury prevention) is been done at younger ages? Is this necessary to minimize the potential risk of low back pain? Actual strategies from the athletes when it comes to preventing the risk of re-injury. How does this type of training day look like? What is the upcoming training period for the athletes towards the Olympic Games in Bejing 2022? After 10 years at the school, Per got an offer he could not refuse - The US Biathlon National Team wanted him to take over responsibility for the whole team's development. Per stayed for eight years, or over three Olympics games, and he added another four years with consulting assignments for the team. During the consulting years, he worked parallel at the ski high school, and it was also then that Frida Karlsson appeared as a young and promising talent at school. Since then, their collaboration has continued, and even though Frida has now left high school, it is Per who sets up the training and tactics. Today, cross-country skiers have personal coaches, and it is not unusual for the coaches to be outside the national team management. Per has made a name for himself, first as a leader in the United States and then as a coach for Frida Karlsson. He is passionate about working with the individual and developing the rider himself. Johan Norrby Granath Johan lives near Falun, Sweden. He has undergone studies at GiH Stockholm, with cross-country skiing as the special sport. He has been working as a cross-country coach for several years, both as a teacher at Dala Sports Academy and as the national team coach for the women's team for seven consecutive years. Today, he works with the junior and the under 23 national team athletes at Dala Sports Academy, one of Sweden's three pronounced elite environments for cross-country skiing. The conversation starts with an exploration of Brian's path to his current position; his education, his time as an outfielder in the Major League Baseball system, his mentors in the field of sports science, and his work as a Strength & Conditioning Coach in the pro sports industry. From there, the conversation shifts specifically to Sparta Science - what they do, and who they aim to serve. Sparta Science is a data collection company that creates predictive models for injury risk and performance enhancement. They work with professional and collegiate sports teams, the military, and the general population to advance our understanding of why we get hurt, how we get hurt, and what we can do to reduce our risk while improving our performance whether that be on the field as an NFL Linebacker, or off the field as a mom who wants to play with her kids pain free.Mike and Brian discuss the future of Sparta Science, and sports science in a greater sense, where Brian sees people truly "owning their data" and being empowered to adjust their risk factors without the need of a coach in many situations. Finally, as the first guest on The Essential Strength Podcast, Brian gets the be the first to answer the closing question - "What is one weakness you are currently working to improve?"RESOUCESFor more on Sparta Science, check them out here - https://spartascience.com/Brian was particularly excited about their blog, which is chalk full of resources primarily targeting the general population, those of us who aren't pro athletes - https://spartascience.com/resourcesTo connect with Brian, find him on Instagram and Twitter - @brianbuck6 on both platforms, or e-mail him directly at brian@spartascience.com.Enjoy the Show!

Brian shares his own story of beginning with baseball, and a host of injuries throughout his career inspired him to work with Sparta Science later on. Sparta Science is a technology used to assess movement holistically through three simple scans, which include balance, plank, and jump. In this episode, Andrew and Brian will be breaking down the ways that each scan works and why they are so effective at optimizing the way a person trains. Sparta Science is for anyone, athlete or not, who wants to understand how to improve their mobility and optimize their human performance. Many athletes who are recovering from specific injuries use this technology to assess their progress. Brian talks about how people recover at different rates and not always at the predicted rate. He uses this technology to assess whether or not an athlete is ready to return to play or if the injury is still in the process of healing. The advantage of using this system is the accuracy of the measurement. This is a system that cannot be cheated or manipulated. Sparta Science has become a system used by many facilities to assess what needs to be improved and what progress needs to be made with each individual’s training. Listen in on this episode as Brian Buck speaks about this truly innovative technology that is bringing athletic assessment to a whole new level.Learn more about Sparta Science at www.spartascience.comDid you enjoy this episode? Please subscribe and leave a review on:Apple PodcastsSpotifyiHeartRadio

Very interesting conversation today with Dr. Phil Wagner, founder and CEO of Sparta Science. We spoke about Olympic lifting and explosive strength with a little bit of dietary discussion sprinkled on top. But the most fascinating content was learning about the pressure plate Phil developed that compiles data from the athlete during a vertical jump, plank and balancing on one leg that is then compared against the same data from thousands of other athletes to identify deficiencies that can eventually lead to musculoskeletal injury, even concussions. This science is in use and growing throughout professional sports and at high levels within our military. www.ironcompany.com
