A Special Memorial Day Conversation with Author and former US Army Intelligence Specialist, Kayla Williams: "Plenty of Time When We Get Home"

This week on The Hamilton Review Podcast, we are remembering Memorial Day with a special episode. We are happy to welcome former US Army intelligence specialist and author Kayla Williams to the show. Kayla shares the details of her moving story in the book she penned, "Plenty of Time When We Get Home: Love & Recovery in the Aftermath of War." Brian, on his way back to base after mid-tour leave, was wounded by a roadside bomb that sent shrapnel through his brain. Kayla waited anxiously for news and, on returning home, sought out Brian. The two began a tentative romance and later married, but neither anticipated the consequences of Brian's injury on their lives. Lacking essential support for returning veterans from the military and the VA, Kayla and Brian suffered through posttraumatic stress amplified by his violent mood swings, her struggles to reintegrate into a country still oblivious to women veterans, and what seemed the callous, consumerist indifference of civilian society at large. You will not want to miss this incredible conversation. Kayla Williams is a former US Army intelligence specialist and author of "Love My Rifle More than You: Young & Female in the U.S. Army" and "Plenty of Time When We Get Home: Love & Recovery in the Aftermath of War." Counter Classical: Kebra-Seyoun Charles on Redefining Classical Boundaries

In this episode of One Symphony with conductor Devin Patrick Hughes, Devin has an inspiring conversation with bass virtuoso and composer Kebra Seyoun Charles. From their early exposure to African drumming and gospel music to becoming a celebrated classical musician, Charles shares their unique journey and vision for the future of classical music through their "Counter Classical" style. Charles's work embodies a fresh perspective on classical music's future, one that honors tradition while embracing innovation and inclusivity. Their approach shows that classical music's evolution doesn't require abandoning its foundations, but rather expanding its boundaries to embrace diverse influences and experiences. As they put it, "Classical music is so beautiful and so ephemeral and it can't be contained." Charles explores growing up in a musical household and how that led to their disvoery of the film composer, Erich Woflgang Korngold. They also discuss the autobiographical ballet project, Enby, that's based on their experience as a nonbinary person developing in the world.  Kebra-Seyoun Charles is able to give prominence to the dance qualities in all forms of music. Kebra-Seyoun has performed alongside esteemed improvisers and composers such as Jon Batiste, at Carnegie Hall, and Tyshawn Sorey, at the New England Conservatory. Kebra-Seyoun was also featured in “Slugs' Saloon” at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, an interactive installation created by famed jazz musician and composer Jason Moran. Kebra-Seyoun Charles is also a passionate chamber musician. Playing with groups like East Coast Chamber Orchestra, A Far Cry, Palaver Strings, and the Sphinx Virtuosi afford Kebra the opportunity to showcase virtuosity while still playing within an ensemble. A prime example of this is their tenure on the 2019 Emmy award-winning Broadway production “Hadestown”. Thank you for joining us on One Symphony. Thanks to Kebra-Seyoun Charles for sharing their amazing spirit and music-making. You can find  more info at https://www.kscharles.com. Recordings from the episode include:  Koussevitsky: Concerto for Double Bass, First Movement. Featuring Kebra-Seyoun Charles on Double Bass. Performed with the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Benjamin Zander conducting. Dating in NY. Composed by Kebra-Seyoun Charles. Featuring Charles on bass and musicians from the Juilliard School.  The third movement from Andres Martin's Bass Concerto. Performed by Charles with the New World Symphony under the direction of Chad Goodman. First movement from Erich Korngold's Piano Quintet, op. 15. Performed by the ARC Ensemble from the Royal Conservatory, Toronto.  Erich Korngold's Cello Concerto in One Movement. Featuring Victor Julien-Laferrière on cello performing with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony. Conducted by Marie Jacquot. “Another Breakup Song.” Composed by Kebra-seyoun Charles. Featuring Charles on bass. Kayla Williams on viola, Joseph Brent on mandolin, Sommer Alteir on violin, and Kabir Adiya-Kumar on percussion.  “Galaxy,” composed by Xavier Foley. The Trojans defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 87-55, jumping out to a 21-2 run and never looking back, and then they tussled with Kansas before coming away with a 73-55 victory that sends them to Portland, Ore. for a Sweet 16 matchup against Baylor and a potential Elite Eight game against UConn. They look at the elite efforts of JuJu Watkins and McKenzie Forbes as well as role players, such as Kayla Williams and Clarice Akunwafo, stepping up and being difference makers that changed the tide of games. The USC Triple-Double Podcast returns with co-hosts Shotgun Spratling and Connor Morrissette (aka Mr. Triple Double) breaking down the Women of Troy's run through the Pac-12 Tournament gauntlet by outlasting Arizona, beating No. 7 UCLA in double overtime and dominating No. 2 Stanford in the championship game to win their first conference tournament title since 2014. They also look at the men's version of the Trojans winning three straight games, including ending the regular season with a bang by picking up their first top-five win since 2008. The Women of Troy move up to No. 3, earning their first top-three ranking in the Associated Press top 25 poll since Cheryl Miller was on campus 38 years prior. The Trojans are No. 10 in the NET rankings after claiming two more wins over teams in the top 10 of the NET rankings, but they likely will be a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament after their march to the title in the final Pac-12 Tournament. The men's team moved up in the seeding for their edition of the Pac-12 Tournament after a pair of wins over the Arizona schools, including a win over No. 5 Arizona that ended up pushing the Trojans into a three-way tie for the No. 9 spot. USCFootball.com women's basketball beat writer Ahmad Akkaoui joins the show to discuss the atmosphere in the MGM Garden Arena throughout the women's Pac-12 Tournament and talk about where he's seen Lindsay Gottlieb's squad grow throughout the season while covering the Women of Troy. He discusses the support USC's roles players and reserves have provided for star freshman JuJu Watkins, who scored a career-worst nine points in the championship game while drawing attention that allowed her teammates to thrive. After a short break, Shotgun and Connor break down all the latest action for both teams, including the continued positive impact Kayla Williams is making off the Women of Troy bench and the big strides forward Rayah Marshall has made in the last few weeks. They also give Pac-12 Tournament Most Outstanding Player McKenzie Forbes her flowers after a 26-point performance in the championship game and discuss a very cool move from Watkins to spread the love to her teammates. The podcasting duo also takes a look at how the USC men were able to dominate a game against No. 5 Arizona despite being outrebounded, behind the all-around performances of Kobe Johnson and DJ Rodman. Their play has really opened things up for the Trojans, who are shooting free throws and defending at a clip better than they have done all season. Welcome back to another episode of Going 4 It! Pat and Mike are here to kick off the show with some pre-free agency mock draft action. But first, they set the stage, reminding everyone that they're just a couple of regular guys having fun, not NFL experts. With full-time jobs and families, they're doing their best to stay on top of the combine, tape, and articles. And yes, they've built their own big boards and positional rankings. So, if you're here to criticize, remember they're just dudes being bros. Jumping into the mock draft, they go pick by pick, starting with the Chicago Bears at number one. Mike locks in Kayla Williams, seeing little chance of Chicago trading out and betting on Williams' upside. Pat chimes in, acknowledging Williams' potential but expressing concern about the Bears' coaching situation. Moving on to pick number two, Pat surprises with Jaden Daniels as his pick for the Washington Commanders. While not the consensus second-best QB, Pat sees Daniels as having the highest ceiling but also the lowest floor in the draft class. As the mock draft unfolds, Pat and Mike mix insights with banter, offering their takes on each pick and the teams' strategies. Stay tuned as they navigate through the draft and dive into more NFL topics on this episode of Going 4 It!

They emphasize the need for empathy and understanding when it comes to mental health, highlighting the importance of recognizing signs of distress and offering support. They also discuss the challenges faced by SOC analysts, such as burnout and the lack of recognition, and stress the need for better communication and collaboration within the industry. The CISO panel that will be part of the event, titled "CISOs in the Hot Seat," sparks curiosity about the discussion topics, with hopes that people management and understanding the mental health of teams will be addressed. The session on AI and automation raises questions about whether it will make the life of SOC analysts easier or increase the threat landscape. There is tons of excitement from Sean and Marco about hosting the "Day in the Life of a SOC Analyst" panel, where they aim to explore the daily struggles and experiences of analysts. They underscore the importance of appreciation and recognition within the industry, as indicated by statistics showing that many analysts are seeking a way out of their roles.____________________________Watch this and other videos on ITSPmagazine's YouTube ChannelRedefining CyberSecurity Podcast with Sean Martin, CISSP playlist:

Kayla Williams, CISO of Devo, sits down to share her story, from graduating with a finance degree to rising to where she is now. She quickly learned that finance was not for her and changed paths, working towards gaining an information security certificate. From there she was able to excel and was offered the opportunity to move to England which changed her life. Working in her new role, she really enjoys thriving with her team. She says "We really try to be the department of no problem versus the department of no." She mentions how her and her team work on a day to day basis together solving issues and yet she says not everything related to cybersecurity needs to be a fire drill. She would rather her and her team build bridges in the face of adversity and in the face of people who may be naysayers. We thank Kayla for sharing her story.
