[This episode originally aired on August 20th of 2024][Watch this on YouTube]Seacoast Church was started in 1988 by Pastor Greg and Debbie Surratt who moved from Illinois to Charleston, SC in 1987 with their four kids, Jason, Josh, Jessica, and Jenny. Early on, their family endured life-threatening hardship—two of the kids surviving a massive car wreck and their oldest daughter, Jessica, surviving an extremely close-call in a jet ski accident. On this episode, Pastor Greg, Pastor Josh Surratt, and Jenny Mayer (the youngest of the bunch) sit down with host, Joey Svendsen to discuss those dark times, including the narratives of those dreadful accidents. They reflect on God's goodness shown through church community and ponder these early seasons in the context of spiritual warfare and God's sustenance. The three also treat the listenership to some fun stories with hilarious insight on the Surratt family, back in the old days when our Lead Pastor, Josh Surratt, still got spankings. On this EpisodeJenny Mayer / Instagram Greg Surratt / Instagram Josh Surratt / Instagram Joey Svendsen, host / InstagramSeacoast Podcast is now on InstagramBe a Patron of the podcast We have a YouTube Channel for videos of all episodes since Jan. 2024. Propitiation Season 2, Episode 7 Gospel Vocabulary In this episode of GraceWalk Radio, Derek and Caleb unpack the meaning of propitiation, explaining it as Jesus' once-for-all, wrath-removing sacrifice on the cross. Drawing from Scripture and Old Testament imagery, they highlight how Christ fully satisfied God's judgment against sin, leaving no wrath remaining for those in Him. The conversation emphasizes the freedom this brings—believers no longer live under condemnation or the need to earn forgiveness, but can quickly return to grace after failure. Ultimately, propitiation points to the sufficiency of Christ's work and the liberating truth that through Him, we have full and confident access to the Father.Follow GraceWalk Radio on X: @gracewalkradioDerek Levendusky is the Lead Pastor at Redeeming Hope in Clarksville, TN. www.redeeminghope.orgCaleb Berg is one of the Pastors at GraceLife Church in Avon, NY. www.gracelifeavon.com

Heath's journey into pastoral ministry began as a plumber's apprentice and eventually grew into an apprenticeship of a different kind, one where he learned to follow the call of Jesus and eventually to shepherd a local church. This conversation traces Heath's story, from studying literature and theology, playing in bands, and apprenticing under his plumber father, before a moment of encounter through the Scripture stirred his heart toward a life in the pastorate. Jason and Heath explore Heath's book All Things Together which offers a vision of Christian apprenticeship built on union, abiding, obeying, and imaging and they discuss why imagination shapes the way we inhabit the world, the role of story in a fragmented age, and what it means to re-inhabit reality in the way of Jesus. In this episode you'll hear:Heath's journey from a plumber's truck and a music career to the pastorate, How a moment under a sink, holding an orange-painted wrench like his father, became his inspiration for All Things Together, Why apprenticeship to Jesus is the essence of being human, not an optional "side quest" for mature Christians,What disintegration looks like in our culture and in our souls, and why our age acts as an amplifier of fragmentation,The role of story and imagination in helping people re-inhabit reality in the way of Jesus,Why "technique" and efficiency are at odds with being stewards of the mysteries of God,How the greatest gift a pastor brings to a congregation may simply be the person they are becoming. For every pastor learning the slow craft of shepherding, this conversation offers a frame for the work, and a reminder that you, too, are an apprentice. May it encourage you wherever you're serving.

J.John sits down with Peter Anderson, Lead Pastor of City on a Hill Church in Edinburgh, to explore the journey of building a church from humble beginnings to a thriving, multi-community movement. Starting with just 30 members after four years, Peter shares how City on a Hill has since grown to reach hundreds across seven communities. In this honest and inspiring conversation, he reflects on the tension of holding onto a big vision while facing the challenges of a small reality. Peter also opens up about the powerful culture of prayer among church leaders in Edinburgh and what it looks like to witness signs of a spiritual awakening across Scotland today. In this compelling message, Pastor Zane Anderson explores the person and power of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday, drawing from Acts 2 and John 14. He unpacks the truth that the Holy Spirit is not merely a force or an influence, He is a person with a voice, a will, and a deep desire for intimate relationship with every believer. Pastor Zane challenges the church to stop relating to the Holy Spirit as an occasional experience and to begin walking with Him as a daily companion and friend. Pastor Zane reminds believers that every Spirit-filled believer already carries all the gifts of the Holy Spirit, because the gifts are not something you receive, they are manifestations that the Spirit releases through you as you make yourself available. He calls the church to stop waiting for someone else to minister and to become the vessel God needs in the marketplace, the grocery store, and the everyday moments of life. This message challenges believers to activate their spiritual language, because praying in the Spirit is not just for church services, it is the tool that builds up your inner man, keeps you on target in prayer, and prepares you for whatever the day may bring. The vision of Mercy Culture is to take people from corporate encounters with God to daily personal encounters with God. Faith Season 2, Episode 6 Gospel Vocabulary In this episode of GraceWalk Radio, Derek and Caleb unpack the meaning of faith and why its power lies not in its strength, but in its object—Jesus Christ. Through relatable illustrations, they show that faith is simply the “empty hands” that receive what Christ has already accomplished, emphasizing that it is not faith itself that saves, but Christ alone. They also explore how faith sustains believers through suffering, helping them trust God's promises even when they cannot yet see the outcome. Ultimately, the conversation points to a deeper assurance: whether weak or strong, true faith rests in the finished work of Jesus. Pastor Aaron Pennington kicks off our new series, Tell Me More About…, with a message on singleness, dating, marriage, and what it means to be complete in Christ. In 1 Corinthians 7, Paul refers to singleness as a gift. For many, that may not be the first word that comes to mind. But this message challenges us to rethink singleness, not as second place, but as a season where God can shape identity, security, purpose, and devotion.Whether you're single, dating, engaged, married, or walking with someone who is, this message offers biblical wisdom for relationships, boundaries, identity, and doing things God's way.Marriage is good, but it is not God. Only Christ can complete us. When we understand who we are and whose we are, every relationship in our life becomes healthier because of it.Scripture References:1 Corinthians 7Colossians 2:6–10John 15:13Trace Church | Colorado Springs, CO

In this special episode recorded live at Fuller Seminary's Houston, TX campus, the Micah Mobilizers are joined by local pastors and Fuller faculty for a conversation about fear, formation, and the church's witness in a divided world. Using the Supreme Court's recent gutting of the Voting Rights Act and the rise of authoritarianism as a backdrop, the group wrestles with the ways fear has shaped Christian imagination, how scarcity and control can distort the gospel, and what it looks like to re-center the church on the abundance, love, and way of Jesus. I'm not a Lead Pastor, but I can't imagine anything more difficult than pastoring in today's political climate. We feel that these days are unique, but in reality they are not. History has much to teach us. Occasionally I like to bring Lead Pastors onto the podcast to talk about how they're navigating cultural issues. My guest today is Evan Wickham. Evan is the older brother of Phil Wickham, also a worship leader and songwriter, and the pastor of Park Hill Church in San Diego, California. Here's what's interesting: In his very church, he has a Christian Border Patrol Agent and Immigrant families, both trying to make sense of the times in which we live. Evan's perspective on how to pastor faithfully is enlightening. What does faithful pastoring look like? How do partisan politics compromise the gospel? Should our Sunday services address the latest issues in the news or should we just stick to the gospel? Is it possible to pastor from the political center? We can't escape politics, no matter how much we would like to try. Politics effect how we live together. The Bible is a political book. Conversations like this rarely make anyone happy but faithful leaders need to step into the tension. Don't miss the end of the conversation where we talk about worship, songwriting, and the presence of God in our churches. Evan's challenge were beautiful and surprising. Topics Covered: Deconstruction and staying in the Church Why Baby Boomer pastors are not known for letting go 3 signs that you are a healthy pastor The Matt Walsh vs Evan Wickham social media beef How to think about what President Trump is saying and doing How to Pastor both right and left leaning people in your congregation What the presence of God actually means Whether we should pursue revival or not Resources Mentioned: Show Sponsor: Planning Center Christ the King of Love by Evan Wickham Evan Wickham Substack Show Sponsor: Planning Center This episode is brought to you by Planning Center, helping you sync all your ministry details across your whole church. Planning Center has become so essential to how I manage a team, that it's almost impossible to consider local church ministry without it anymore. Today, I want to leave you with a PCO pro-tip. Does this sound like a familiar situation? It's the end of the week. You're about to leave the office when you suddenly think: Did all of our volunteers confirm for Sunday? You scroll through the schedule and sure enough—there's a gap. Instead of allowing yourself to spiral into a panic, try this: In Services, Planning Center has gap alerts. Turn them on, and you'll get a heads-up days before service if positions are still unfilled or unconfirmed. No more end of the week scrambling. Speaking of less scrambling, did you know you can access everything you need for rehearsals right from the Service media player on your phone? Lyrics, chord charts, arrangement notes—it's all right there, so you're not hunting for files in the middle of hitting those power chords. In this message, Ben Cachiaras, Lead Pastor of Mountain Christian Church in Joppa, Maryland, shares a powerful reminder that every follower of Jesus is called to share their story. Through Scripture and practical encouragement, he explains that witnessing is not about pressure, arguments, or forcing beliefs on others, but simply telling others how Jesus has changed your life.Drawing from Jesus' words in Acts 1 and the story of the blind man in John 9, this message shows how our personal testimony can point others to the hope of Christ. Ben encourages us to live lives shaped by Jesus through love, generosity, humility, and kindness, while also being ready to speak with gentleness and authenticity when opportunities arise. No matter your background or knowledge, God can use your story to impact someone's eternity. In this powerful message, Pastor Sean Gleason explores what it truly means to connect with God through meditation, drawing from Joshua 1. He unpacks the critical difference between biblical meditation and demonic meditation, revealing that biblical meditation is not about emptying yourself, it is about feasting on the word of God until everything else begins to exit. Pastor Sean challenges believers to choose what they meditate on, because their meditation will determine their direction. Pastor Sean warns that when believers chew on the lies of the enemy rather than the truth of God, they give the enemy agreement and power over their lives. He calls the church to take every thought captive, not by suppressing it, but by bringing it before Jesus and making it listen to what God says. This message challenges believers to understand that the prescription for seasons of transition is meditation on the word of God, because what got Israel into the promised land was not their strength, it was their willingness to think about the right things. Righteousness Season 2, Episode 5 Gospel Vocabulary In this episode of GraceWalk Radio, Derek and Caleb explore the meaning of righteousness and why it is central to the gospel. They unpack the difference between imputed righteousness—the perfect righteousness of Christ credited to believers by faith—and imparted righteousness, which grows over time in the Christian life. Through stories from figures like Martin Luther and John Bunyan, they highlight how true freedom comes not from striving to be good, but from receiving Christ's finished work. The conversation ultimately points listeners to rest in the unchanging truth that in the gospel, Jesus Himself is our righteousness.Follow GraceWalk Radio on X: @gracewalkradioDerek Levendusky is the Lead Pastor at Redeeming Hope in Clarksville, TN. www.redeeminghope.orgCaleb Berg is one of the Pastors at GraceLife Church in Avon, NY. www.gracelifeavon.com

Show Notes:First Assembly ChurchTehillah WorshipThe Pastorate's City MeetupsEpisode Notes:In today's episode, Ben Johnson joins Jason for a conversation on pastoral stewardship, generational legacy, and what it looks like to lead a nearly century-old church into its next chapter. Ben is the Lead Pastor of First Assembly Calgary, a Pentecostal church planted 97 years ago that has helped birth many other Pentecostal congregations across both Calgary and western Canada. Together they trace the story of First Assembly, the 35-year-old Tehillah Mondays gathering, and the heart that First Assembly has for worship, prayer, and the next generation. Jason and Ben also explore the joy and weight of fathering young leaders, the family legacy that traces Ben's grandfather's salvation back to First Assembly's downtown building decades ago, and the formative season of revival at Christian Life Assembly in 1998. The conversation closes with Ben sharing First Assembly's Vision 100, a stewardship-shaped initiative to double the impact of First Assembly in the next 100 years.Ben and Jason explore:The history and identity of First Assembly Calgary as a "mothering” and “fathering" church that has planted or helped plant many other Pentecostal churches in the city,The 35-year story of Tehillah Mondays and how a single worship gathering has continued to serve generation after generation in Calgary,What Ben learned by sitting with the saints of the church to discern God's specific purpose for a local congregation, and the role an eldership's fasting and prayer played in his transition,Why First Assembly is next-generation focused, and how that shapes worship, budgets, staffing, and Sunday gatherings without losing the honor due to senior saints,The cradle-to-college discipleship pathway, the Tehillah Schools for teenagers and adults, and how this has become the "farm team" for nearly all of First Assembly's staff,What young staff and leaders actually need from a lead pastor,First Assembly's Vision 100 and stewarding the church toward its 100-year anniversary with a strategy to reach, revitalize, and reproduce in Calgary.PartnersContact John Wright at Generis for help cultivating a culture of generosity in your church. We couldn't do the work we do at The Pastorate without your generous support. We invite you to pray, share, and give towards seeding a hope-filled future for the Canadian church.

In this compelling message, Pastor Les Cody explores what it truly means to connect with God through conversation, drawing from Exodus 3 and the story of Moses at the burning bush. He unpacks how conversation with God is not just speaking to Him, it is turning your attention toward Him, listening to what He says, and obeying quickly. Pastor Les challenges believers to stop siloing their relationship with God and to bring Him into every area of life. Pastor Les reminds believers that God is not afraid of their real and raw conversations, whether those conversations include complaining, anger, sorrow, or doubt. He calls the church to bring their authentic selves before the Lord, because authenticity breaks the power of the enemy and turns the ordinary ground beneath their feet into holy ground. This message challenges believers to recognize that spiritual maturity happens through conversation with God, because obedience is always decided in the secret place first. Just as the deliverance of Israel was not settled in Pharaoh's palace but in the wilderness conversation between Moses and God, what God wants to do through your life will be settled in the quiet place of honest, humble conversation with Him. The vision of Mercy Culture is to take people from corporate encounters with God to daily personal encounters with God.
