We're on a heater! The Seattle Kraken have won 5 straight and secured their spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and the boys couldn't be anymore pumped. This week's Kraken Reaction (4:30) features a breakdown of last week's games and why Joey never panicked when down 2-0 in Vancouver, how the vibes for the vibe only continue to get better, Jordan Eberle's dad energy has ascended him to another level, Hak's generous move with Joey Daccord in Arizona, and how we're feeling as the regular season comes to a close. Next, Jeff and Joey are joined by Piper Shaw from Root Sports NW for a special Seattle Kraken Playoff Preview (33:15). Piper covers everything from the importance of Starbursts among the broadcasting team, who controls the aux cord in the locker room, why Jordan Eberle is quiet hero for the Kraken, her take on a first round match-up and how the team will fare, the importance of Oliver Bjorkstrand, and much, much more. No Dumb Questions (1:33:55) has Joey asking "what is cap circumvention?" as the Kraken get set to play the Vegas Golden Knights who just activated their Captain Mark Stone from LTIR and will be operating at a $96 million cap for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. 3 Stars of the Week has everything from Jeff's fishing trip with the family to Pretty Lights making his musical return, Succession, and more. We're thrilled to announce that the Glass and Out podcast returns next week for season 5! We've got an exciting lineup of guests and lots of new features that we can't wait to share with you. In the meantime, we just released likely the most important video in The Coaches Site's history. NHL on ESPN play by play broadcaster Leah Hextall shares her raw, emotional and shocking, but sadly not surprising, experience after he first season calling in the NHL. Aaron Wilbur explains how the presentation came to be an why it's a must-watch for everyone in the hockey and sporting community.
Episode 236 of the Sports Media Podcast features a conversation with Leah Hextall, a play by play broadcaster for ESPN's NHL coverage. Hextall was the first woman to call play by play for a nationally televised NHL game when she was part of Sportsnet's first all-female broadcast team in March 2020. In this podcast, Hextall talks about the presentation she made in June titled “Not One Of The Boys” for an event held by The Coaches Site;” how when people ask her what her first full season calling games nationally was like, she tells them she survived; getting death threats; social media venom; being told she was hired only for her gender; the role of the bench reporter in hockey; leaving the business at age 37 to work for the premier of Manitoba; growing up in a famous hockey family; her goals for her second year at ESPN; her desire to call women's hockey again, and much more. The Suitcase and The Scribe are back for another episode filled with playoff hockey talk. After sweeping the Florida Panthers, the Tampa Bay Lightning are moving onto the second round. Mike McKenna and Scott Burnside dove into what went right for Tampa, especially on the depth pieces they have acquired. Of course, they then spoke about the Carolina Hurricanes and the New York Rangers. Neither team has won a game away from their home arena, so who knows what will happen there. Later on, in the show, Mike and Scott were joined by Leah Hextall from ESPN to talk about the Battle of Alberta. Leah talked about her experience covering the series so far and the vibes around the two cities. She also dove into the banter between the two benches, specifically involving Evander Kane and Matthew Tkachuk. Towards the end of the interview, the three of them also discussed the idea of Barry Trotz becoming the new head coach of the Winnipeg Jets. Leah is a Manitoba native, and she explained how badly the Jets need a man like Trotz to help turn the tables in Winnipeg. After talking with Leah Hextall, Mike and Scott rounded out the show with a conversation about the Nazem Kadri racial incident that occurred earlier this week and the other news on the ice from that series.
