Lisa Leong doesn't do things by halves - if she's worried she might not be getting enough sunlight in the dead of Melbourne winter, she goes out and buys an infrared desk light. If she learns cold therapy might be beneficial, she jumps into a sub-zero cryotherapy chamber.  So when the ABC Broadcaster started feeling a disconnect between her mind and body, she didn't just start practicing Qigong (a meditative martial arts practice similar to Tai Chi). No, she wanted to learn it from the master himself, Robert Peng.  She thought she might be in luck, because the Chinese healer was brought to Australia by… Bob Hawke? But by the time Lisa wanted to learn, Peng had moved to New York. So naturally, Lisa flew across the world to spend ten days under his tutelage!  Lisa shares why she felt compelled to learn Qigong, what she learned from Robert Peng, and how Bob Hawke fits into the story! Lisa Leong discovered the hard way that you can be both fit and unhealthy. While working a high-powered (read: high stress) job that required her to fly around the world, she thought she might need some balance. For some reason, she thought training for an Olympic-distance marathon was the way to do it!  Between working marathon hours and training for a literal marathon, she didn't have time to slow down when she first got a chest infection. Instead, she loaded up on antibiotics and steroids and powered through. She did the same when the chest infection reappeared, and soon enough she was reliant on her medication. Shortly after, she was bed-ridden for months, suffering from nerve damage so bad she would cry if a breeze struck her the wrong way.  Thus started her lifelong quest for real, life-giving health. And if you've listened to Lisa's ABC show, This Working Life, you know she takes her quests seriously.  Her motto is “every day is lab day,” and the same is true outside the office. Lisa shares a wide variety of the personal health experiments she's currently running, and outlines the long-term thinking that informs her morning routines and other daily health practices.  Connect with Lisa on Twitter, Instagram or LinkedIn *** My new book The Health Habit is out now. You might not be surprised to find out Lisa Leong has a colour-coded calendar. She's the host of hit ABC podcast This Working Life, after all. But what might surprise you is how her attention to diaristic detail helps her when she's not at work. Her ABC work is orange, and the sessions working on her new book were red. But she also blocks out her e-bike commutes and social activities. Why?  For one thing, it ensures nobody schedules her into a meeting when she's meant to be out for dinner. But perhaps more importantly, it means she has something like a birds-eye-view of her life, one week at a time.  Too much orange and red? Not enough yellow and blue? Even today, the class you are born into can largely determine your career. Research by Diversity Council Australia shows that more than any other diversity demographic, it was social class which most determined Australian workers' experience of inclusion or exclusion at work.  Talking about class at work can be awkward, especially when most Australians believe we live in the land of a “fair go”. But, talk about it we must. Amanda Rose has dealt with the stigma her whole life, simply because she comes from Western Sydney. When an event MC introduced her as “from Parramatta…but that's ok because she's gorgeous” she knew things had to change. Amanda has since gone on to found six businesses including Western Sydney Women, an organisation which offers free programs and workshops designed to help women from the area thrive in the workplace.  Author and journalist Rick Morton grew up in poverty in rural Queensland, and believes his acute understanding of the class experience has shaped his career.  As an award-winning journalist, Rick has broken stories on aged care, refugees and the NDIS for some of Australia's biggest news publications.  Lisa Annese, CEO of Diversity Council Australia shares the surprising findings in their ground breaking class research, and how workplaces might overcome our unconscious class biases.  Report by Diversity Council Australia: Class at Work  Producers: and Maria Tickle Producers: Kara Jensen-Mackinnon and Maria Tickle This episode was first broadcast on 31 May 2021

Did you know that you spend most of your waking life working – a jaw-dropping 90,000 hours for the average person. Work dominates our days. It can be the thing that gets you up in the morning, or the thing that keeps you awake at night. What about you? Has the pandemic changed your relationship with work? Are you at a career crossroads, feeling tired, unmotivated, a tad lost in your work life? Are you experiencing burnout? Do you want to be more intentional about the role of work in your life so you can grow more joy and meaning in your career, and make your work, well, work for you? We sat down to explore some of these questions with ABC Broadcaster Lisa Leong, who along with journalist Monique Ross, has spent a lot of time thinking and writing about work and co-authored a brilliant just published book called This Working Life - How To Navigate Your Career In Uncertain Times. In this conversation, Lisa and Mon share how being on the brink of burnout was the wake up call they each needed to change their relationship with work, and themselves. They reflect on their personal, hard-won learnings and how they had to rethink unsustainable and negative work habits to rebalance their work life coherence, do less to gain more, and harness their energy and superpowers to craft the careers they now truly love. There’s stacks of great practical advice in here to help kickstart your career next steps, or at least help you have a good hard look at how you spend your working life. Source: This Working Life book cover Big idea #1 — There's not one answer There's not one answer to work, and there's certainly not one career path. This is not a book of hacks, or a plan, or a process, or a methodology, or a single model per se. It's more of a set of mindsets and thought-starters on how to (re)think work in the modern age. It challenges the idea of a ‘job for life', and encourages us to think about building skills that are transferable, and a career that's more fluid and ever-changing. At the heart of this is a mindset of learning and experimentation, not an answer or a particular path for everyone that everyone should take.  There's a lot of experimentation woven into the book in little sections called ‘lab experiments', with ideas that you can put into practice including building a portfolio career, finding a mentor, and everything in between. The important point is that you do have options and you can change things. You can make tweaks by practicing job craft, you can pivot by adding strings to your bow or building a portfolio career, or you can completely reinvent by having a career change. Lisa and Monica give plenty of their own examples of tweaks, pivots, and reinventions they've had through their careers. One of the most important things about this book is it really just show the art of the possible. It's so easy to feel like you ‘can't' do these things, or ‘can't' change something about how you work. But how much of that is actually you holding yourself back; writing off things without really testing them, experimenting, and pushing a little bit more. Big idea #2 — Category of one This was one of my favourite ideas in the book. It's the idea of being a category of one by leveraging your unique experiences, strengths, and values so that you (and only you) can add your own magic and impact to your work. First you need to know what your strengths, values, and experiences are. This is important so that you can then develop them and use them with a bit more purpose and intent. The life flow exercise in the book is a great exercise in the book where you look at the the highs and the lows of your life and career to see what those trends and themes are. You get to find the common denominator of when you've been really satisfied with your work or life, which means you can design your next move around having more of those elements. This mindset of a category of one also allows you to stand out and can stop comparisonitis because if you're a category of one, there's no point comparing yourself or your path or your skills to other people, because they are a different category of one. Being able to play your own game is also very freeing, and much healthier than constant comparison. It allows you to embrace a more infinite mindset rather than playing the finite games (despite the fact that organisations are often set up to pit us against each other when it comes to annual reviews etc). Finally, thinking in a ‘category of one' mindset can be the thing that allows you to successfully create and/or design a role, knowing what your strengths are, where you're going, and what your unique individual path is. Big idea #3 — Work/life coherence Work/life balance makes my eyes roll back in my head, so I was very pleased to see for once a different approach in here. Lisa and Monique challenge the idea that work and life should be separate. It often feels like more stress to try (and fail) do that. A coherence, on the other hand, is about finding more of a unified whole, or a connectedness between work and life. They say that if balance draws a line between work and life, coherence starts to unify those two sides, and they become more interconnected, in flow and flexible to change. For work/life coherence to work, we need to remove guilt and presenteeism and instead focus on what actually matters. There's a two way exchange of course, and requires transparency in your team or organisation. At an individual level we need to be able to self-regulate, we need to better help ourselves focus and be present so that when we're doing work, we are doing work, and when we were at home, we are doing that thing. Coherence doesn't work if one are is always spilling into the other.  It takes boundaries, it takes self-awareness, it takes self-regulation. And of course, transparency in order for this to work.   Let's connect LinkedIn Instagram See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

You've tried it all. You've joined the 5AM club, done the morning HIIT workouts, tried the pomodoro technique, downloaded Headspace and worked at a standing desk. But… you haven't quite figured it out yet. Lisa Leong, host of the hit ABC radio show, This Working Life, says that's the point. Every day is “lab day”, and the experimenting should never end. Lisa's job is to examine… well, jobs. She's on a mission to understand the modern working world and how we can all make our working lives more effective and fulfilling. Sometimes this means changing little things, like what time we get to the office or which morning routines give us the most energy. Sometimes it's the big things, like figuring out how to advance your career, or even knowing when it's time to change industries. Lisa teaches you how to determine your own values and apply them to work, and explains why the term “work-life balance” needs to be replaced with something a bit more meaningful.  Connect with Lisa on Twitter, Instagram or LinkedIn Grab a copy of This Working Life here ***Connect with me on the socials:LinkedinTwitterInstagram  If you're looking for more tips to improve the way you work, I write a fortnightly newsletter that contains three cool things I have discovered that help me work better, which range from interesting research findings through to gadgets I am loving.
