Charlotte McConaghy is an Australian author living in Sydney with her partner and two children. She has a Masters Degree in Screenwriting from the Australian Film Television and Radio School, and a number of published SFF works in Australia. Her novel Migrations was her first foray into adult literary fiction, published in North America by Flatiron Books, and by Penguin Random House in Australia and the UK. It is being translated into over 25 languages and adapted to film. Once There Were Wolves, the New York Times Bestseller, is a romantic mystery about a biologist charged with reintroducing wolves to the Scottish Highlands in order to rewild the landscape and bring a forest back to life. Wild Dark Shore, the focus of today's show, continues her love of romantic thrillers set in beautiful, remote places, and explores not only what it takes to raise children in a collapsing world, but the impossible choices we make to protect those we love. Charlotte joins Barbara DeMarco-Barrett to talk about whether she comes up with the story first or the setting, what her research entails, why she chose multiple point of view narrators for Wild Dark Shore, how she knows when a novel is finished, revision, and more. Russel Howcroft has been talking to Australians about how they are sold things for years on the much loved TV show Gruen - Now he lets us in on the secret of how he sells things to his kids! (Hint: like any good client pitch, it's more guiding, less telling In a free ranging chat that follows the whims of Russ's very active mind, he explores with Hame how his own upbringing influences the choices he now makes as a father, how he has actively fostered creativity in his kids, and why it can be scary to do so. He explains his devotion to instilling confidence in his kids, and creating the freedom to make their own choices (and their own mistakes!). He also revisits times when he was a very busy corporate guy, and how with the benefit of hindsight, he views the perpetual challenge of balancing work and life. And Russ also finishes with a big long list. It's a bit like his version of (Everybody's Free) to Wear Sunscreen, but on the way he parents.  Maybe we can put it to music one day! His final point is perhaps his best.  We teach our kids how to love - so make sure you do it right! With wife Kate, Russ is a parent to 3 adult children. Killing It is a satiric comedy on Peacock starring Craig Robinson as Craig Foster, an aspiring entrepreneur struggling to start his business. The show pokes fun at the absurdities of American capitalism, class, race, health care, and how it's all stacked against the little guy. Cinematographer Judd Overton shot all episodes of Killing It for both season one and season two. His approach to shooting the comedy has always been to keep it relatable and naturalistic, even though the characters are going through things that might seem ridiculous. With three cameras, it was also important to create a space for the actors to do their best work- they would often improvise and try to sharpen their jokes on set. Shooting with longer lenses gave them room to move. The composition and lighting also have to play together for the humor to hit. Each of the characters in Killing It have their own episode, and the lighting is influenced by the places they're in, such as a strip club or a huge mansion. Judd feels that planning is essential, and he had to think on his feet to be able to change blocking or the time of day a scene was shot. One scene in Killing It from season two required a lot of stunt work and fight scene blocking in an automotive chop shop, but the comedy beats weren't working. Without the comedy beats, the fight scene just wasn't going to play. They had to stop, reblock and shoot again to work out how to make it feel funny. Judd grew up in the outback of rural Australia, and his family would buy VHS movies for entertainment and watch them over and over. The kids would then reenact the movies, filming it with a camcorder, and edit them together. Growing up in the driest permanently inhabited place on earth meant that documentary crews would frequently come through, and Judd would go and watch them work. It inspired him to become a cinematographer, so he learned photography in high school and then became a camera assistant through the Australian Cinematography Society. He later attended the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS), won several awards for his student work and started getting offers to DP on larger films. Judd's next project is a feature film called Totally Killer, a slasher comedy that will be the closing night film at Fantastic Fest in Austin. It releases October 6th on Amazon Prime. Through exposure we are all continually absorbing a culture, a set of beliefs. Culture eats birth plans for breakfast!  In other words, if you don't take charge of what culture and the narrative is doing inside your brain and body you will not get the birth you want.  Ruby Challenger is also on fire about this. It was a spark ignited at her She Births® course many years ago and now blazing through her work as a filmmaker.  Ruby's short film, MumLife, screened in official competition in the 2022 La Cinef section at Cannes Film Festival. Five weeks earlier she had given birth to her second baby, so she packed up her family of four and took them to the festival! MumLife is a 15 minute musical about postnatal anxiety and is now enjoying a festival run.    Ruby completed her Masters at the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS). She wrote her thesis on motherhood and the cinema, looking at mothers in front and behind the screen, which is being released on Instagram to further the discussion about mothers in film.  Ruby has been on film sets since she was born - legend has it her first trip after the hospital was a film set to visit her dad.  Alongside her award winning musical film, MumLife, her advocacy work for families will fill you with passion and purpose - to make all the places we go more inclusive and family friendly.  In our podcast today we discuss media and the common birth/parenting culture. Plus, look at what it's really like studying or working as a mum, in one of the most intense and male led industries, film. As Ruby says: It's important that we change these narratives. Most of the women that you see on film and TV or any media who are mothers, are not going to be a protagonist. Don't miss this latest inspiration and on fire conversation with Ruby Challenger  Please leave us a review of the She Births® Podcast if you are enjoying the show.

He so generously lets us in to his experience growing up in Australia in a very religious community that viewed being gay as a mental health issue that one needed to heal from, and how he too operated from this belief. He goes on to share what his evolution has been in navigating this belief system and his own identity, to eventually get to the place he is at now. I so loved getting to talk with Caleb, particularly because I felt so much personal resonance with his Second Adolescence experience, everything from feeling stunted in many ways to having the exciting and scary new first experiences, the joys of getting to share such adolescent-like excitement about dating with friends, and so much more. About the guest:Caleb Irwin (He/Him) is a skilled visual communicator and emerging producer. Currently based in Sydney,  Australia, Caleb has a passion to see stories portrayed on screen in a way that leave audiences changed for the better. Working for his church and various international charities, Caleb has been dedicated to bringing people's stories to the screen and plans to do this in new and beautiful ways as he steps into the film industry. Source: This Working Life book cover Big idea #1 — There's not one answer There's not one answer to work, and there's certainly not one career path. This is not a book of hacks, or a plan, or a process, or a methodology, or a single model per se. It's more of a set of mindsets and thought-starters on how to (re)think work in the modern age. It challenges the idea of a ‘job for life', and encourages us to think about building skills that are transferable, and a career that's more fluid and ever-changing. At the heart of this is a mindset of learning and experimentation, not an answer or a particular path for everyone that everyone should take.  There's a lot of experimentation woven into the book in little sections called ‘lab experiments', with ideas that you can put into practice including building a portfolio career, finding a mentor, and everything in between. The important point is that you do have options and you can change things. You can make tweaks by practicing job craft, you can pivot by adding strings to your bow or building a portfolio career, or you can completely reinvent by having a career change. Lisa and Monica give plenty of their own examples of tweaks, pivots, and reinventions they've had through their careers. One of the most important things about this book is it really just show the art of the possible. It's so easy to feel like you ‘can't' do these things, or ‘can't' change something about how you work. But how much of that is actually you holding yourself back; writing off things without really testing them, experimenting, and pushing a little bit more. Big idea #2 — Category of one This was one of my favourite ideas in the book. It's the idea of being a category of one by leveraging your unique experiences, strengths, and values so that you (and only you) can add your own magic and impact to your work. First you need to know what your strengths, values, and experiences are. This is important so that you can then develop them and use them with a bit more purpose and intent. The life flow exercise in the book is a great exercise in the book where you look at the the highs and the lows of your life and career to see what those trends and themes are. You get to find the common denominator of when you've been really satisfied with your work or life, which means you can design your next move around having more of those elements. This mindset of a category of one also allows you to stand out and can stop comparisonitis because if you're a category of one, there's no point comparing yourself or your path or your skills to other people, because they are a different category of one. Being able to play your own game is also very freeing, and much healthier than constant comparison. It allows you to embrace a more infinite mindset rather than playing the finite games (despite the fact that organisations are often set up to pit us against each other when it comes to annual reviews etc). Finally, thinking in a ‘category of one' mindset can be the thing that allows you to successfully create and/or design a role, knowing what your strengths are, where you're going, and what your unique individual path is. Big idea #3 — Work/life coherence Work/life balance makes my eyes roll back in my head, so I was very pleased to see for once a different approach in here. Lisa and Monique challenge the idea that work and life should be separate. It often feels like more stress to try (and fail) do that. A coherence, on the other hand, is about finding more of a unified whole, or a connectedness between work and life. They say that if balance draws a line between work and life, coherence starts to unify those two sides, and they become more interconnected, in flow and flexible to change. For work/life coherence to work, we need to remove guilt and presenteeism and instead focus on what actually matters. There's a two way exchange of course, and requires transparency in your team or organisation. At an individual level we need to be able to self-regulate, we need to better help ourselves focus and be present so that when we're doing work, we are doing work, and when we were at home, we are doing that thing. Coherence doesn't work if one are is always spilling into the other.  It takes boundaries, it takes self-awareness, it takes self-regulation. And of course, transparency in order for this to work.   Let's connect LinkedIn Instagram See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Me-Lee Hay is a musician and composer, and has written scores for various television series, documentaries and commissioned work for Sydney Dance Company and Sydney Theatre Company. In 2017, Me-Lee won a Screen Music Award for her composition in Last Tree Standing. Despite the awards and experience working alongside household names (Geoffrey Rush, Sigrid Thornton, Luke Nguyen), it is not the extraneous recognition that drives Me-Lee, but internal gratification and a genuine love for her craft. “I always try and ground myself by remembering that feeling – from before I started writing music for a career – where I just loved music, for music's sake,” Me-Lee Hay said. “Just trying to remember that passion…there was a reason why I came into this profession.” Born in Malaysia, then moving to Sydney's Inner West as a 5-year-old, Me-Lee learned classical piano from a young age and went onto Newtown High School of the Performing Arts for her final secondary school years. Later on, Me-Lee further honed her craft at Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) and developed a strong practical understanding of musical composition for the film and television industry. “It helped me with the nuts and bolts of the business…learning to read a contract, understanding how films are made. It showed how a film gets off the ground and actually gets funded,” Me-Lee said. Find out more in the latest episode of the Passion & Perspective Podcast, hosted by Jonathan Robinson-Lees. Greg Waters has been an executive producer, writer and show-runner on a number of great Australian drama series. His credits include: Rake, Anzac Girls, Janet King, Paper Giants, Devil’s Dust, An Accidental Soldier, The Straights, Crownies and Dance Academy. Yet up until his early thirties he was working in politics - until he decided to defect to study at AFTRS, the Australian Film Television and Radio School. His most recent achievements are the second series of the tripped-out sketch comedy series ‘Soulmates’ starring Christiaan Van Vuuren and Nick Boshier (aka The Bondi Hipsters) as well as what is sure to be one of the countries biggest TV events of the year, the political drama Secret City which premier’s on Foxtel’s Showcase this Sunday, June 5. Though he is incredibly modest, I did get him to open up about his process - some of which I witnessed first-hand as Greg and I have been housemates over the past few years. An absolute culture vulture, Greg is constantly absorbing information and inspiration around what he is interested in – or about the world that is relevant to what he is creating. He sees every play, every major TV drama, and every time I asked him if he’d heard of a podcast, he was all over it. He is also an indie music boffin and a regular attendee of alt music festival ‘Splendour in the Grass’. Talk about ‘filling your well’! I was very happy to sit down with my friend and reluctant mentor, Greg Waters.

This is what it feels like to be hyperconnected: a new kind of community - pervasive, continuous, yet strangely tense and tenuous, like a balloon inflated to the point of bursting. The limits of the neocortex meeting the amplifier of the Human Network. That creates unique opportunities: we can come together at a word, self-organize around or against a blog post, a live-streamed video, an automated reply from a faceless, rent-seeking organization. Nothing can stop us. We can’t even stop ourselves. But what do we want? And the other thing? You’ll need to be at Web Directions South, for the closing keynote, if you want to find out. Known internationally as the man who fused virtual reality with the World Wide Web to invent VRML, Mark Pesce has been exploring the frontiers of media and technology for a quarter of a century. The author of five books and numerous articles, Pesce has written for WIRED, Feed, Salon, PC Magazine, and The Age. For the last three seasons, Pesce has been a panelist on the hit ABC show The New Inventors. From 2003 to 2006, Pesce chaired the Emerging Media and Interactive Design Program at the world-renowned Australian Film Television and Radio School. In February he received an appointment as an Honorary Associate at the University of Sydney, and has gone on to found FutureSt, a Sydney media and technology consultancy. Sometime shortly after Web Directions South concludes, somebody (probably a somebody in the "developing" world) will become the three billionth mobile phone subscriber. Good for the providers, of course - but the effects of the network on human social organization are far more profound. From the dhows of Kerala to the cities of China to the beaches of Cronulla, we’re all coming into contact with - and learning how to master - the subtle skills of spontaneous self-organization which are the essential fact of life on the network. We can get in front of this spree of self-organization - or get run over by it. Either way, mob rules are the new laws of business, politics, and culture.
