It is with sadness that we report the passing of a real gentleman and former member of the Sunshine Coast Amateur Radio Club known affectionately to all as Doctor Rod VK4MRC. Rod Cardell was well-liked at the club and in his community and died December 27th in Nambour after ill health, his funeral was held on January 3 and attended by family, friends and club members. Dr Rod a retired doctor and former Ansett Pilot, was born in Brisbane on the 4th of July 1932 and was a child of WW2, living in the shadow of Mt Louisa Townsville in Far North Qld from 1942 to 1945 adjacent to the Stock Route Airstrip which became a US and Australian Air force base during the war. He had many great adventures and put them to paper in 1991 when he wrote the book, “Wings Around Us” which includes the story of how his father refused to sell his house to make way for the Airbase, so it was built around them. He is missed by his children, grandchildren, club members, and the local community. Vale Dr Rod VK4MRC. Hello, I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I've been thinking. The fireworks that marked the New Year Celebrations are now just a memory but the world around us continues with infinite variability. The possible peak of activity may be upon us for Sunspot Cycle 25 with solar flares, radio blackouts and amazing DX if I understand the reports. The weather has been going to be wet for days but the skies cleared and people have been looking forward to basic services such as electricity, telephones and the internet. Areas that suffered from storms and deluges with extreme damage to housing are ironically getting water back to their homes as the localised flooding recedes. At my QTH, we had storm activity and woke up the following day, New Year's Eve, with no internet. With the brilliance of the design of the NBN, this also meant no home telephone and our main service provider and the one I use as backup were all unavailable. A day without online entertainment was little more than an inconvenience but it indicated how many advisory services are now geared to delivery via the Internet. We had no access to immediate weather advice or means of accessing it other than via good old-fashioned broadcast, free-to-air, services. It seems the outage was localised as it has not been mentioned on any service that I have used. We woke up for New Year's Day with the service restored but stories running in the news are indicating many people have been without services since Boxing Day and they live not knowing what is happening in the community that sustains them. For these people, it would seem the planners have put all their eggs in one basket and then dropped it. It is interesting to hear the electricity supply people saying that the quickest way of restoring power to many areas is to set up small networks that transportable generators can service. Then as if this is the ultimate fix, hearing from one spokesperson that this solution will save householders from having generators. Sorry mate, but since when has redundancy of services been unnecessary? Householders might not have the means to replace telecommunications but should be able to protect themselves with readily available equipment. I wonder what involvement there has been in the whole weather-born situation from radio amateurs and whether radio clubs have been able to assist during the Christmas to New Year period. I am not aware, at this stage. Have you been affected or has your club suffered loss or been involved? This is the news that should be shared widely. There is a spirit of generosity within our community but for it to be demonstrated, the needs have to be known. There has been some interesting activity during the recent heatwave in the south of the State with VHF signals being received in places quite distant from their source. I'm Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that's what I think….how about you?

This episode of Streets of Your Town comes to you from the streets of the renowned Woodford Folk Festival, an annual gathering in the week leading up to New Years Day that transforms this peaceful rural idyll into a thriving community of more than 130 thousand people, larger than the nearest Sunshine Coast town of Nambour. As I wandered through the many stages on this land now known as Woodfordia, which was purchased almost 30 years ago to give the festival a secure and ongoing home, there was one band that stood out and beckoned me into the Pineapple Lounge. They are The Moving Stills. And as The Moving Stills vocalist and guitarist Tom Mahler tells us on Streets of Your Town, their dedication to getting to their next gig from their Central Coast base knows no bounds - hitting the road through 2023 as part of their Volcano tour as well as promoting their new album coming out in August. His work centres around circumstances evoved from a post colonial system, that censors truth while opresses the sovereign rights of his clan. Language is a powerful tool that is used by institutions to influence, write law and imbed false narratives into the Australian psyche. In the form of text, Blackman uses language in a variety of interpretations to pick apart falsehoods and policies, while passing on messages from elders, that he reworks into contemporary artworks for the future generations of his clan, and the wider community to consider. On this week's show we welcome the thorougly nice and thoughtful person, along with exciting political artist, Van T Rudd. Hailing originally from Nambour, Queensland, Van grew up doodling in his school books, surfing and playing 'the world game'. Moving on to study humanities and partying at university, Van had quite a long sting playing in bands in both Queensland and Melbourne. These days, Van enjoys much admiration for his wicked public installations which get right to the heart of the absurdities, corruption and lies inherent within both the political system and capitalism. If you're not familiar with Van's work you must check it out! We thank Van for being our guest this week and sharing some of his formative years with us. It was a real pleasure. Daniel Keighran, VC was born in Nambour, and grew up in Lowmead; a small town approximately 80km from Bundaberg in regional Queensland. His upbringing was anything but normal; Dan describes it as ‘pretty rough', with a loving mother but an absent father challenging his teen years and where his one male constant was his Grandfather- himself a World War II veteran. Indeed, the first-person Dan ever saw shot was his father. Dan then enlisted in the Australian Army at 17 and served his country for 11 years seeing operational service in East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for Australia for his role in the action at the Battle of Derapet. The citation for the Victoria Cross reads: ‘For the most conspicuous acts of gallantry and extreme devotion to duty in action in circumstances of great peril'. In 2011, Dan discharged from full-time Army service and commenced work in the mining industry. Initially working in exploration drilling throughout Western Australia and then as an underground shotfirer (blaster) in a gold mine outside of Kalgoorlie. It was in his cottage in Kalgoorlie that he received notification that the Chief of Army was coming to visit him. In the tiny lounge at Kalgoorlie Airport, the Chief of Army handed him an envelope…. The contents of that envelope would change his life. In 2015, Dan returned to his home state of Queensland and completed his MBA- we talk about this and life with a VC, but beyond the military. Intelligence Summary (INTSUM) 00:00 Dan Keighran's citation for his award of the Victoria Cross 06:00 What an opening line to Dan's new book! On the show today we have the endlessly knowledgeable Uncle Wayne Fossey. Uncle Wayne is a fierce advocate for Indigenous land rights, environmental health and sustainable living. He shares some uplifting, informative and, at times, confronting stories. Don’t miss this opportunity to absorb these Elder wisdoms; I hope you enjoy the show.Bio:"I was born in Nambour and raised on the banks of the Petrie creek in a tin shed with a dirt floor. My father was a soldier who returned from WWII and married a local girl. Life growing up was a happy one. My grandfather on my dad’s side, was a fella born near Raglan, he was taken by a white fella and put on board a ship. He ended up wandering the west in places like Roma, Cunnamulla and Charleville. He fitted in and survived working odd jobs.Growing up education was an important part of my life and I was successful in a scholarship and went on to study at University at a young age. I became a teacher at first and then went further on to be a subject master, deputy principal and then principal. I later took time off from work to conduct research into historical records and was a part of various research projects, such as the outer lesson suicide of female Indigenous girls around the world in places like Hawaii, Canada, Belgium and France. My education has allowed me to educate others."

The silly season is in full swing isn’t it? I always find the lead up to Christmas one of the most exhausting, stressful and overwhelming times of the year. School is wrapping up, shops are ramping up and I’m barely holding up under the incessant pressure. Our time is stretched, our budgets are stretched and our patience is stretched to the limit, and there’s still 31 sleeps till Christmas. That’s 744 hours, 44,640 minutes or 2,678,400 seconds, don’t get stressed! And in the middle of this silly season where we rush too much, we spend too much and we eat too much, you can buy a Christmas card that says, “Peace on earth.” Is that some kind of sad joke? I find it hard to get 2 minutes peace, let alone experiencing peace on earth. We live in a world crying out for peace, yet unable to attain it, even at Christmas. Luke 2:9-14 (ESV Strong's) And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” PEACE ON EARTH? Peace on earth? According to the NY Times, in the past 3,400 years, humans have been entirely at peace for 268 of them, or just 8 percent of recorded history. In the US, they have had only 17 years of peace in their history, meaning 93% of the time it has existed the US has been at war. Peace is something often spoken of but rarely if ever achieved. The peace we wish for one another at Christmas is almost entirely absent from human history. Thus phrase “Peace on earth” bears looking at. Let’s look at the text. GLORY TO GOD Luke 2:14 starts with the phrase, glory to God in the highest, and this is the first step towards peace… Give glory to God! The Greek word for glory is doxa, which means to give dignity, honour, glory or praise that is due. It means to hold in high praise or estimation of, and this is where so many today go wrong. You can have pesos, prestige, power, possessions, but no peace, because you didn’t start with the Prince of peace! If you want peace in your life this Christmas, you need to start by putting God in His rightful place. God created the universe, the stars, the galaxies and this planet, and He created you. He has a plan and a destiny for your life, and He opened the way for you to be reconciled to Him, but the last thing the world wants for you this Christmas is to put God in the place He deserves and give Him the glory and honour that is due to Him. PEACE AMONG THOSE WITH WHOM HE IS PLEASED The Bible never promised peace on earth to all men. We conveniently overlook the end phrase, among those with whom He is pleased. And who is He well pleased with? Those who trust Him, that’s who! This Christmas more than ever we need to totally yield our lives to Jesus, the Prince of Peace, because then, and only then, will we know true peace. PEACE IN OUR TIME In 1938, Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain was much celebrated for brokering a peace agreement with Adolf Hitler, appeasing the dictator by giving in to his territorial demands. He produced a signed agreement, called it peace in our time, but while the world celebrated his effort, this same Adolf Hitler shortly after plunged the world into its darkest and most evil conflict ever. Mankind speaks much about peace, governments claim they will bring it, people wish it for each other, but none of them can produce it! It’s even an integral part of many languages… Jews greet one another with the word “shalom”, Arabs with “Salam” and in Malaysia they say “Salamat”. These phrases mean peace be with you, but it never happens. Perhaps the greatest paradox of all in the 21st century is that a religion calling itself peace is responsible for almost all of the 828 armed conflicts currently raging in 69 countries around the world. I could call myself His royal highness the king of Nambour, but the reality doesn’t match the words. Don’t be fooled by the media, Islam has nothing to do with peace in our modern world. But true peace actually transcends circumstances. If your peace is dependent on you having money, or success, or anything else, it in not true peace, it’s a fragile substitute. True peace should be independent of whatever is happening around you, because it is deep within you, if you are among those with whom God is pleased. 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV Strong's) Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all. THE MISSING PEACE OF THE PUZZLE The missing piece in true, lasting peace is the presence of God. Isaiah says Isaiah 26:3 (ESV Strong's) You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. The Hebrew word for peace is of course shalom, which means peace, prosperity, security, completeness, soundness, health, tranquillity. The Hebrew word for stayed is samak, and it means to lean upon. So Isaiah is telling us that this Christmas, peace is not about gifts or family or pudding, it is about leaning on the very presence fo God. That’s why Jesus could say, John 16:33 (ESV Strong's) I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” TRUE PEACE What is this true peace? It is an inner sense of contentment and quietness, regardless of life’s circumstances. It is steadfast confidence in our ever-faithful, immutable heavenly Father. It is the presence of faith in the midst of faithlessness, a smile in the midst of pain, and joy in the midst of unhappiness. Habakkuk 3:17-18 (ESV Strong's) Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation. True peace does not merely dull our pain. A person who has genuine, godly peace can endure an avalanche of hardship and difficulty and still enjoy an inner peace that surpasses all human understanding. When we pray with Paul, Philippians 4:7 (ESV Strong's) And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Why is this true peace so powerful? Because this peace does not come from pleasant circumstances, nice events, or good things others may do for us. Instead, it is based on the fact that the Spirit of our holy, omnipotent, and never-changing God lives within us. Does enjoying God’s perfect peace mean that you’ll never feel the effects of the storms raging around you? Hardly. But His peace is complete, adequate, and sufficient for anything you face. Lets look at three keys to experiencing sustained, true peace in your life: 1. FOCUS ON GOD Perfect peace comes when you fix your mind on God, or as we saw before, lean on Him. You must discipline yourself to concentrate on or meditate on God’s presence and work in your life, not the problems you face. When you spend time concentrating on a problem, doesn’t it seem to grow bigger? In the same way, you will have a bigger sense of God’s presence and provision as you fix your mind on Him. Hebrews 12:1-2 (ESV Strong's) Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, The Greek word for looking to Jesus is aphoreo, which means to turn your eyes away from other things and fix them, focus them on one thing… Jesus. And when we turnout eyes upon Jesus, when we look full in His wonderful face, the things of earth will grow strangely dim In the light of His glory and Grace. DEMONSTRATION 2. TRUST IN GOD You never have to worry about God acting too late or providing insufficient help. His timing and purposes are perfect; In fact, He uses your tribulations to reveal more of Himself to you. Can you trust Him, no matter how hard it is, however huge the mountain you seem to face right now, can you trust Him to come through? I remember facing a vicious and very public attack from another person. A letter, full of lies and venom had been sent about me, and forwarded to me. It wasn’t fair, it wasn’t even accurate, but I was angry, deeply distressed and fearful. But I faced a choice… I couldn’t reply, I couldn't defend myself without looking guilty, I just had to keep quiet and trust God. I remember laying the letter out before the Lord one night, (like Hezekiah did) praying over it and giving it totally to God. And over time He vindicated me. I had no choice, I couldn’t fix it, or control what people thought, I just had to trust God, but He is faithful! His Word is full of rock-solid promises, many of which involve granting you peace in the midst of trials. Know that He will always honor His promises! Romans 15:13 (NIV-WS) May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. 3. HIDE GOD’S WORD IN YOUR HEART New Age gurus will tell you that peace comes from meditating, and I have to admit, they’re onto something. Thinking about, dwelling on, chewing over truths can drive them deep into your spirit, but while New Agers are contemplating their naval or a single syllable, we have the greatest tool of all upon which to meditate…the Word of God! Psalms 119:165 (ESV Strong's) Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble. So, if you’re in a fix, remember Philippians 4:6, and 7. Philippians 4:6-7 (ESV Strong's) do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. The Greek for the word for surpasses is hyperecho, which means to transcend, to be superior to, to rise up and overcome all understanding or knowledge. All the knowledge in the world can’t give you true inner peace this Christmas. All the wisdom of the ages, all governments, all media, all presents or family times cannot help you find peace. You don’t need more Christmas hype, you need hyperecho, you need the peace that transcends all understanding, and you can only find this peace in Jesus Christ! WE WILL HAVE PEACE ONE DAY And this same Jesus is coming again! But He’s not coming as a baby in a manger this time, He’s coming back for His beloved people as a king, as he King of kings and Lord of Lords, and when He come He will usher in 1,000 years of incredible peace such as the world has never known… You can learn more about this in Revelation 20 and Isaiah 65. At that time men will be at peace and dwell together in harmony, the Wolf and the lamb will graze together, and God will be near to His people… Isaiah 65:24 (ESV Strong's) Before they call I will answer; while they are yet speaking I will hear. (Isaiah 9:6) But God us with us now, we don’t have to wait until He returns! This world is crying out for peace, but it will never know peace until it knows the prince of peace … and neither will you! ACCEPT THE PRINCE OF PEACE In the hustle and bustle and insane pressure at the end of the year, the enemy wants to bring up your past, he wants to fill you with fear for the future, he wants to see you in conflict with people around you this Christmas… in short, he wants you to never truly know peace. Some of you here are lonely, some are stressed, some of you are angry at your family, some are facing Christmas not with joy but with dread. It’s because you lack true peace, because remember peace can be in your life and your heart, no matter what others are saying or doing, and no matter what pressure you face. Romans 5:1 (ESV Strong's) Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. We can have peace with God and in our lives. It’s not about your situation, it’s not about your circumstances, it’s about your heart. So, as we face this Christmas silly season, if you are stressed right now, I want to ask you to open your heart to the Holy Spirit right now. No Jesus, No Peace… Know Jesus, Know Peace You can know peace by allowing the peace of God to flood your soul in the person of the Holy Spirit. In the OT, the shekinah glory of God was seen as a cloud filling the temple, as a pillar of fire, in a vision of a prophecy, but today you can have the glory of God manifest in your life all the time because the Holy Spirit, the presence of God lives in you.
In this episode of Remarkable Tales, we take you to the Woodford Folk Festival. The Griffith University student newsroom based on site has gathered tales from throughout Woodfordia, where more than 130,000 thousand people gather every year, making it larger than the nearest town of Nambour.
As the end of the year draws near, most students have completed their examinations. I don’t like exams. I remember sitting in the exam hall, chewing my pen, pondering these impossibly complex questions about stuff I will never have to deal with ever again for the rest of my life! I found some really funny test answers kids have given, so I thought I would share them with you… Bob has 35 candy bars. He eats 9. What has he got now? DIABETES Why are there rings on Saturn? BECAUSE GOD LIKED IT SO HE PUT A RING ON IT Use the word climate in a sentence. THE HILL WAS SO BIG I COULDN’T CLIMATE What ended in 1896? 1895! Alice places a prepared slide in her microscope, but when she looks down it she cannot see anything. Suggest one reason why not. SHE IS BLIND How do you change centimetres to metres? TAKE THE CENTI BIT OUT What did Mahatma Gandhi and Gengis Khan have in common? UNUSUAL NAMES Name 4 heavy metals. METALLICA, LED ZEPPELIN, ANTHRAX, MEGADEATH Hopefully you would do better than those guys. But what might you experience in school, a College or University is just a representation of what you live out every day! You may not have known that God has exams and tests, but He does… Look at Abraham and Isaac, look at the Canaanite woman… Matthew 15:26-28 (ESV Strong's) And he answered, “It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table.” Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly. The great things is that, if you fail a test, you don’t fail in the whole of your life. God is for you, not against you. God loves you, and wants you to become everything you can possibly become in Him. So if you fail a test in life, you simply get to resit the exam, again and again until you pass. So don’t be surprised that God tests you, instead rejoice, because, pass or fail, He loves you, … 1 Peter 4:12 (ESV Strong's) Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. Therefore, it is in our interest to pass God’s tests, don’t you think? WHY DOES GOD TEST US? If none of us like tests, and sometimes you barely hang on, why does God test us? To answer that question, we need to step back and ask what it is that God wants for our lives. Any marketing expert will tell you that the main thing all people are interested in is “What’s in it for me.” Whether it is buying a car or house, choosing a church, pursuing a career or even choosing a wife or husband, people naturally ask what’s in it for them. Why? Because we tend to put ourselves first. Kayleigh doesn’t suggest I give her a lollie, she doesn’t even ask for a lollie, she tells me she needs a lollie. What we think we need is the most important issue to us. When you first come to Christ it is all about your needs. I need to be saved, I need God to give me this, I need help with an addiction, I need help in a relationship, I need, I need! However, as you mature in Christ, you learn to take your eyes off what you need and place them on the One who can meet that need, trusting Him to meet every need you have. Paul promises, Philippians 4:19 (ESV Strong's) And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. We as people seem intent on supplying our own needs, not waiting for God to supply our needs, so we try our best and only come to Him when we can’t do it by ourselves. So God tests our faith all the time, to take our eyes off ourselves and our abilities and to develop the character He wants in us. 1. HE TESTS US TO DEVELOP TRUST Psalms 20:7-8 (ESV Strong's) Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand upright. Our natural tendency is to trust in man, in ourselves, in things we can see and understand. Some trust in institutions like governments, some trust in people’s benevolence, but the way to truly become someone great in this world is to trust in the Lord. Develop your trust in God and you will develop the character He wants in you. 2. HE TESTS US TO TEACH US PATIENCE Psalms 27:13-14 (ESV Strong's) I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living! Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord! I don’t know about you, but I have a wait problem. I want God to teach me patience, as long as He does it quickly! As a man of action, waiting is probably the hardest things for me to do! But God will often use waiting to teach us the spiritual fruit of patience. Someone of great character is generally not impatient or impetuous, because they have passed the test of waiting. 3. HE TESTS US TO CONFORM OUR WILL TO HIS Let’s face it, we are stubborn and rebellious people, who are more interested in what’s in it for me than becoming Christ like. Left to ourselves, our will puts our interests and our comforts first, and everything in this world tells us that that is what we should be doing. Buy this phone, drive this car, you deserve the best! Romans 12:2 (ESV Strong's) Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. When we stop conforming to the pattern of this world, when we allow the Holy Spirit to renew our mind, then we begin to discern God’s perfect will, and our will starts to conform to His will! If we seek God’s will first, all the things we worry about have a habit of just falling into place for us. Matthew 6:31-33 (ESV Strong's) Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 4. HE TESTS US TO EMPOWER US I cannot live a triumphant Christian life in my own strength, and neither can you! God never intended for you to sit His exams, failing miserably every time. No, here’s the best news of all… He rigs the exam. At Uni, I had limited time and they could ask an unlimited number of very curly questions, so I decided to study as much as I could, then ask God to rig the questions, tailoring them to the material I had studied. He actually did this! And in life’s exams, He can rig them for you as well. He doesn’t write the answers on your sleeve, but He supplies His Holy Spirit to live within you and help you pass the tests of life! Romans 8:26-27 (ESV Strong's) Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. HOW DOES GOD TEST US? It is an accepted fact that you cannot improve that which you cannot test. Developing anything of value, a products, service, relationship, even a ministry, requires testing so you can discover how to make it better. God allows tests of character to determine our faith or to test our devotion in order to teach us humility and prepare us for greater responsibilities. We even should test ourselves... 2 Corinthians 13:5 (ESV Strong's) Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realise this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test! Remember, God does not allow tests in our lives to rain or our parades, or give us a hard time, but He lovingly allows us tests to develop our character and walk with Him. So how does He test us? 1. DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES We all face difficult circumstances at some point, and the longer they last, the greater is the test! Joseph was sold into slavery, faced hardship, false allegations, imprisonment, lasting years, yet he passed the test with patience and endurance, showing love to the ones who had caused it… Genesis 50:20 (ESV Strong's) As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today. 2. PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL HARDSHIP Suffering pain of any sort is a test, be it physical, emotional, relational or financial pain. If you want to see a Biblical example of someone passing the pain and hardship test, you need look no further than Job, who lost everything financially, suffered personal attack from his wife and friends. And was covered in sores, yet was able to say, Job 13:15 (ESV Strong's) Though he slay me, I will hope in him; yet I will argue my ways to his face. You may have faced this, or be facing this right now! Fiona went through this when we lost everything, and we had to leave our designer home for a tin shack in Nambour, in the summer, where it was so hot that she broke out in a heat rash. She said, thanks Lord, now I even have the skin disease like Job! The turning point in this exam for her was when she decided that thank God for something every day, starting with the electronic gate so people couldn’t see how miserable she was! 3. DELAYED FULFILMENT OF HIS PROMISES Delayed fulfilment of God’s promises can be one of the sternest tests of our faith. Joseph experiences it for years, and of course Abraham and Sarah waited many years for their first child. Habakkuk was another who complained about God’s overly long timetable… Habakkuk 2:3 (ESV Strong's) For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end—it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay. 4. PERSONAL ATTACKS I can attest that personal attacks can be a tremendous test of character. Being falsely accused, having your reputation trashed, having negative words spoken against you has happened many times in my life, but these tests give you a great opportunity to respond in a godly way… that’s how you pass! 1 Peter 2:12 (ESV Strong's) Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation. Attacking them back, arguing your innocence, trying to speak reason to them achieves little. Living a shining, godly life is what counts, knowing no matter what happens, you have behaved with integrity. Years ago a local pastor attacked me when I left his church, and called every other pastor on the coast to prevent me ministering in their churches. I decided to say nothing in reply and let God vindicate me. My local ministry just dried up. At that same time, and opportunity opened up and, though I rarely ministered here, I began to minister internationally. God tested me, I passed, and then He opened incredible opportunities. So if you are being attacked, don’t fight back, let God vindicate you… then you will pass the test! 5. BLESSINGS Sometimes being blessed can actually be a test in itself, because the pass mark is when we rely on God, not our own abilities. Often Christians who become successful in business, forget about God! Prosperity can be a sterner test than poverty! King Solomon was the wisest man who ever lived, the richest and most powerful king of Israel. But he had 700 wives and 300 concubines, an unwise decision… 1 Kings 11:3-4 (ESV Strong's) He had 700 wives, who were princesses, and 300 concubines. And his wives turned away his heart. For when Solomon was old his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and his heart was not wholly true to the Lord his God, as was the heart of David his father. So beware the blessing test! If you are blessed in finances, health, business, relationships or church, stay humble and keep seeking God lest your blessings cause you to fail the test! 6. A CHALLENGE TO OBEDIENCE In Genesis 22 Abraham passed the test of his obedience when God asked him to sacrifice his only son. At the last moment an angel stepped in and said… Genesis 22:12 (ESV Strong's) He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” King Saul, however, failed the obedience test when he was told to devote Amalek to destruction, choosing instead to keep the spoils for himself. He then tried to cover his sin by claiming he was going to sacrifice the spoils to the Lord, but Samuel said, 1 Samuel 15:22 (ESV Strong's) “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams. When God tests you by asking you to be obedient, you need to be obedient! 7. A GREAT TEMPTATION Temptation is a massive test of your obedience to God. You might think you cannot cope, that the temptation pressure is too great to bear, that you might cave in under it at any time, but God has this promise, 1 Corinthians 10:13 (ESV Strong's) No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. So if you cannot stand under this test, find a way out and run like crazy. Fleeing sin is better than succumbing to it, and fleeing it might help you pass the test! 8. A PERIOD OF SPIRITUAL DRYNESS Sometimes we are tested by an extended period of spiritual dryness, and some of you are here at that point right now. You might be flat, uninspired, you might feel tired and distant from the Lord. You’re skipping quiet times and rarely pray. When facing the dryness test, you can see your faith shrivel up and die, or you can decide to thirst for God… King David felt this way in the wilderness of Judah and wrote, Psalms 63:1 (ESV Strong's) O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. HOW TO PASS THE TESTS Any one of those tests could come your way at any time. Whether it is dryness or success, attacks or hardships, pain or obedience. To grow in the things that matter in eternity, you need to pass the tests. Not just one or two… all of them. So what can you do to start passing all of those tests? Remember, God allows times of testing into our lives to develop character and trust. Being tested is not necessarily a sign of His anger, disfavour or judgement, it is often a sign that you are truly moving with God, and He is preparing you for something great! Romans 8:28 (ESV Strong's) And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. All things… even the tests of life! Let me finish with 4 things you can do to start passing your exams… 1. SEARCH YOUR HEART Psalms 139:23-24 (ESV Strong's) Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting! The first step in passing your exams is to have close, serious look at your own life. You turn up here at church looking pious and holy, but examine your heart and see if there be any offensive way within you. If there is, confess it and move on, but don’t cover it over! Allow God to shine His light into the darkest crevices of your soul and let Him clean up your heart from the inside out. 2. KEEP IN STEP WITH HIS SPIRIT Time is one of the great testers of our faith, and we tend to either lag behind God, or if you’re like me, run ahead! Timing is everything, and God is eternal and gets time in a way we simple cannot! After listing the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5, Paul writes this… Galatians 5:24-25 (ESV Strong's) And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. Micah 6:8 talks about walking humbly with your God, step by step with Him. Don’t get impatient, don’t get resentful and stop demanding things of God. To pass the test you have to learn to faithfully wait. With patience, even if your situation is painful, boring or limited. 3. STAY ON TARGET In the original Star Wars, as the good guys are attacking the Death Star, the pilots are screaming at each other to stay on target. Lasers are flying everywhere, danger and imminent destruction are all around, but they had a job to do, to put that proton torpedo into the small shaft and blow up the Death Star! So when you are tested, stay on target. The worst thing to do is to look at the circumstances and let them dictate your destiny. Peter stepped out of the boat with faith, but the waves and wind took his attention off Jesus. Psalms 119:15 (ESV Strong's) I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. Read His Word daily, get your life into God, serve and bless and live for Him and you’ll find you’ll be passing tests! 4. SEEK FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD If you want to pass tests, seek God first. When I hear of all the things believers are pursuing in their lives, my heart breaks because unless they seek the Lord and His Kingdom first, they are headed for disaster. We worry if we don’t have things, don’t achieve things or we can get lured into the things of the world. If you seek God first, He either gives you the desires of your heart, or they fade away into nothing because they weren’t that important after all. Job was tested, and he said confidently, Job 23:10 (ESV Strong's) But he knows the way that I take; when he has tried me, I shall come out as gold. God through Zechariah told the remnant of His people Zechariah 13:9 (ESV Strong's) And I will put this third into the fire, and refine them as one refines silver, and test them as gold is tested. They will call upon my name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘They are my people’; and they will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’” Today some of you here have tests, big tests. If that’s you, I want to pray for you and stand with you in this test. I want to see you triumph over this test, pass with flying colours, and it is easier to do that together rather than separately. It might be a relationship, it might be a testing job situation. It could be family, it could be financial, it could be a huge temptation, but if you are facing a test today, stand up.
