My guest is a popular actress who has appeared in dozens of movies and television shows. She also produced an emotional one-woman show about a traumatic period in her life. We discuss her career, her show (and then movie) “Accidentally Brave”, and much more.
Description: Maddie Corman is a seasoned American actress and playwright that you've seen in classic films including Some Kind of Wonderful, Maid in Manhattan, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, and our favorite television shows like Law and Order, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Most recently, she has put her creative hand to writing and performing in a very raw and vulnerable autobiographical one-woman play called Accidentally Brave, that delves into Maddie's personal journey following the arrest of her husband on child pornography charges in 2015. Today, Maddie shares her story of navigating the aftermath, focusing on themes of resilience, healing, and redefining normalcy when life takes an unforeseen turn. In this tender and transparent conversation, we discuss: How Maddie's life turned upside down after a public personal crisis—and how she found her way back What led to her decision to write a raw, hilarious, deeply moving one-woman show called Accidentally Brave (now a movie on MAX!) What she imagined midlife would look like when she was younger versus what it looks like from where she sits today What it's like to walk (or sometimes crawl) through shame and loss—and come out with more freedom, more truth, more YOU Also, how motherhood shifts our perspective in crisis What practices or people help us stay grounded in the hard moments – Maddie shares some really great resources! Why midlife is actually the best time to tell your story and start again Thought-provoking Quotes: “After a really big trauma that I thought was going to destroy my children, it turns out, they are thriving, and funny, and sensitive, and smart, and caring, and annoying, and they love me, and I drive them crazy, I'm sure. I share that because I feel like that was what saved my life was somebody who had been through something similar saying my kids are going to be okay.” – Maddie Corman “When you lose your mother, people bring a meatloaf over. But when your husband's arrested and you say ‘I think he's a sex addict and a porn addict,' there's no meal train that's coming for that.” – Maddie Corman “I had lived 47 years when this happened and I had never met another person who had gone through anything like this. P.S. It turns out I had. They just didn't share about it.” – Maddie Corman “You inch your way back to the sunshine and it's so slow. And at the beginning you just think, everything's ruined; I'll just never be happy again so let me cobble together some sad life that just gets me to the finish line. But the truth is, it's stunning how much we can recover.” – Jen Hatmaker Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Some Kind of Wonderful film (1987) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094006/ John Hughes - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000455/?ref_=fn_all_nme_1 Brené Brown - https://brenebrown.com/ Glennon Doyle - https://momastery.com/ Elizabeth Gilbert - https://www.elizabethgilbert.com/ Accidentally Brave Play - https://www.maddiecorman.com/accidentally-brave Accidentally Brave on MAX - https://play.max.com/movie/b19ce99f-93c8-4150-ba0d-139e12048efe Partner Betray Counseling - https://www.maddiecorman.com/partner-betrayal-counseling Find a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT) Therapist - https://iitap.com/page/TherapistDirectory Find a 12-Step Program - https://www.aa.org/find-aa SANON International - https://sanon.org/ AL-ANON Family Groups - https://al-anon.org/ Guest's Links: Website - https://www.maddiecorman.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/msmaddiecorman/ Twitter - https://x.com/maddiecorman Connect with Jen! Struggling to find a role that would break her from beautiful girlfriend, adoring wife parts, 1992's My New Gun gave Diane Lane her first starring vehicle. It was a role that got her noticed and some of the best reviews of her career. Supporting her were Stephen Collins, James LeGros, Maddie Corman, Tess Harper, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman in the tale of a handgun that sets off a chain of distressing events in the life of Lane's unfulfilled New Jersey housewife. Dan and Vicky discuss the indie darling along with plenty of recently seen like Babygirl, Presence, NIghtbitch, Companion, 1972's Fright, Red Rooms, It Ends With Us, Wolfman, Shudder's Horrors Greatest and lots of SNL 50 programming. We're doing a "Deep Dive" into our past episodes about "getting our kids to...," from listening to what we say the first time, to talking to us about what matters most to them. Find the rest of the episodes in this deep dive series in this Spotify playlist. Getting your kid to talk to you is never easy (unless you're standing with car keys in hand, front door ajar, 15 minutes late for an appointment). Here are some parenting strategies that work to get kids talking at every age. Based upon empirical evidence, “How was school today?” is the most annoying question a mom could ever ask. So why bother trying? Because Jennifer Kolari, author of Connected Parenting: How to Raise a Great Kid, says getting our kids to open up is part of our job description: It's our job as parents to help our kids sort through and process the things that happen to them during the day. “They don't have the higher-order thinking to do it on their own yet. In this episode we lay out what gets our kids to talk– at every age and stage. Margaret says you have to “talk the talk that arrives.” But Amy comes at it armed with research; if her ninth-grader wants to talk NBA draft, she's ready to lean in. Both of us plan to work on what Marie Roker Jones calls “listening with the intent to understand.” Here's links to some research and hilarious takes on this topic that we mention in this episode: Alice Bradley for Lifehacker Offspring: Stop Asking Your Kid About Their Day Marie Roker-Jones for Good Men Project: 10 Ways to Get Your Son to Open Up and Talk to You Clare Gagne for Today's Parent: Age-By-Age Guide To Getting Your Kid To Talk Liz Evans for Huffington Post: 25 Ways to Ask Your Kids ‘So How Was School Today?' On this very special edition of Not A Bomb, the guys celebrate 150 episodes of the podcast with a double feature starring the one, the only - Andrew Dice Clay. First up is the 1990's action comedy mystery film, The Adventures of Ford Fairlane. Here, we find the Diceman starring as the ”The Rock N' Roll Detective” who gets into all the hottest clubs and dates all the hottest women while solving cases within the music industry. Critically panned and a financial flop, The Adventures of Ford Fairlane failed to capitalize on the success of Andrew Dice Clay who had just broken attendance records that same year at Madison Square Garden. If that wasn't enough, the guys tackle 1993's romantic comedy (?), Brainsmasher…A Love Story. Let's see, this one has Teri Hatcher, goofy ninjas who aren't really ninjas, and a lot of similar plot points found in Ford Fairlane. CONTENT WARNING: this episode discusses child pornography, the pornography industry, sex addiction and potential suicide. Actress and playwright Maddie Corman became brave because she had to be. It was crisis time. About seven years ago her husband was arrested for downloading images of child sexual abuse material* (legally known as child pornography). And while it's important to point out that he never went further in any way, that shocking act would forever change their lives. Maddie wrote and starred in a one-woman play called Accidentally Brave that depicts the horrors and terrible loneliness she experienced in those early days, years and even now. But she has continued to fight for her marriage, protect her family and heal herself one day at a time. Maddie says there is opportunity when your life blows up. Maddie won the Off Broadway Alliance award for best solo performance in Accidentally Brave. *Thorn.org : “Child sexual abuse material (legally known as child pornography) refers to any content that depicts sexually explicit activities involving a child.” // “Those working to combat this type of abuse have begun using the term “child sexual abuse material” (CSAM), which more accurately conveys the content and is explicitly tied to the source of the problem.” If you have questions or guest suggestions, Ali would love to hear from you. American actress Maddie Corman thought she and her television director husband, Jace Alexander, had a normal, happy life together. They’d been married for more than a decade and had three children. But in 2015, everything came crashing down when Jace was charged with a crime many people would find unforgivable. He was convicted of accessing and distributing child abuse images. What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood | Parenting Tips From Funny Moms
Getting our kids to talk to us is never easy (unless we’re standing with car keys in hand, front door ajar, 15 minutes late for an appointment). Based upon empirical evidence, “How was school today?” is the most annoying question a mom could ever ask. So why bother trying? Because Jennifer Kolari, author of Connected Parenting: How to Raise a Great Kid, says getting our kids to open up is part of our job description: It’s our job as parents to help our kids sort through and process the things that happen to them during the day. “They don’t have the higher-order thinking to do it on their own yet. In this episode we lay out what gets our kids to talk– at every age and stage. Margaret says you have to “talk the talk that arrives.” But Amy comes at it armed with research; if her ninth-grader wants to talk NBA draft, she’s ready to lean in. Both of us plan to work on what Marie Roker Jones calls “listening with the intent to understand.” Here’s links to some research and hilarious takes on this topic that we mention in this episode: Alice Bradley for Lifehacker Offspring: Stop Asking Your Kid About Their Day Marie Roker-Jones for Good Men Project: 10 Ways to Get Your Son to Open Up and Talk to You Clare Gagne for Today’s Parent: Age-By-Age Guide To Getting Your Kid To Talk from American Girl: Conversation Starters To Get Your Girl To Talk About Her Day (to our surprise, “What emoji best describes the day you had?” was a great question!) Liz Evans for Huffington Post: 25 Ways to Ask Your Kids ‘So How Was School Today?’ Without Asking Them ‘So How Was School Today?’ The Ungame …and some perfect viewing for you and your teenager: Maddie Corman’s wonderful short film How Was Your Day? How do you get your kids to open up? Tell us in the comments! Here’s one way we get our kids chatting with us– cooking together. We’ve both been pleasantly surprised at how HelloFresh has turned dinnertime prep into something our kids love to participate in. We follow the easy (super-easy) directions, chop along together, and then we all sit down together as a family to try something new (and maybe even talk about it).
