We've been sold so many lies about what it takes to be confident, but true confidence has NOTHING to do with your body, your productivity or anyone else's approval. That's exactly what I'm diving into with today's guest, Kyira Wackett - a licensed therapist who specialises in shame resilience and radical acceptance. If you've ever thought, “Why do I still feel like this even after doing all the mindset work?” — this episode is for you. Let's unpack the lies you've been sold about confidence and what it really takes to heal from shame and self-doubt.In this episode, we chat about: How to recognise if shame is impacting your daily lifeAm I making ‘healthy' changes for me or out of shame? Why do some people feel more shame around their body than others? How trauma can impact the way we feel about our bodiesThe first step to healing from shame and self-doubtWhy you don't need ‘fixing'Visit Kyira's website here.
Today, we're diving into something that's often misunderstood in both the wellness and medical worlds—hypermobility. It might look like “just being flexible,” but in reality, it affects every system in the body—from joints and soft tissue to the gut, nervous system, and even mental health. In this episode, we're joined by Jen, a yoga teacher-in-training and hypermobility specialist, who shares her personal journey of living with undiagnosed hypermobility for decades. What started as “growing pains” turned into chronic soft tissue injuries, digestive struggles, and years of medical gaslighting—until one unexpected book sparked her "aha" moment. We explore:What hypermobility really is and how it shows up in daily lifeHow collagen affects gut health, movement, and moreWhy traditional yoga and fitness cues can actually be harmful for hypermobile bodiesThe power of body awareness, and nervous system support How to advocate for yourself in the medical + fitness space when no one seems to listenWhether you've been struggling with “random” symptoms, unexplained injuries, or gut issues that don't add up—this episode will help you connect the dots, feel validated, and discover new ways to care for your body.
Something that seems to be prevalent now, more than EVER in our society, is receiving unsolicited comments about our bodies.Today's episode is actually inspired by a recent message I received from a listener, all about THIS topic. I've dealt with it on my own journey, and even if you haven't, I bet you know someone who has!For some reason, people feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and opinions on other people's bodies (typically, women are the ones getting this feedback). This is happening super frequently online with social media, but it happens in person too (i.e. women working out in the gym). I'm not sure where people have gotten the audacity to do this, but it is NOT okay to put other people's bodies down. Words DO matter, and they have consequences. We really need to get back to the concept of ‘thinking before we speak' (or type online) - not everything should be spoken out loud!If you've experienced this, I want to urge you to protect your peace, however that looks for you. You are ENOUGH already, and if you need support to keep kicking ass on your fitness journey, I'm here for you! In this episode, we cover:Why people are feeling more comfortable than EVER to comment on other people's bodiesThe audacity that people have, thinking it's okay to say the things that they sayNormalizing the concept of ‘thinking before you speak'How to protect yourself when someone gives their unsolicited opinion on your bodyLinks/Resources:Ep. 150 | Empowering Women in Fitness: Breaking Stereotypes, Embracing Authenticity and Building Strength + ConfidenceEp. 116 | Social Gatherings Without Guilt: Tackling Food and Drink Pressure from OthersJoin FIT CLUB, my monthly membership with workouts you can do at home or the gymPRIVATE COACHING is my 1:1 program (choose 3 or 6 month option)Connect with me on Instagram @kristycastillofit and @unfuckyourfitnesspodcast so we can keep this conversation going-be sure to tag me in your posts and stories!Join my FREE Facebook group, Unf*ck Your FitnessClick HERE for my favorite fitness & life things!Send me a text with episode ideas or just to say hi!

Employing the Satipatthana Sutta, Joseph Goldstein shows us how to overcome the mental states of sloth and torpor. The Satipatthana Sutta is one of the most celebrated and widely studied discourses in the Pāli Canon of Theravada Buddhism. This episode is the fourth part of an in-depth 48-part weekly lecture series from Joseph Goldstein that delves into every aspect of the Satipatthana Sutta. If you are just now jumping into the Satipatthana Sutta series, listen to Insight Hour Ep. 203 to follow along and get the full experience! In this episode, Joseph instructs listeners on:The mind states of sloth and torporDefining sloth as a sluggishness of mind which dispels energyNoticing when sloth and torpor are present in usHow sloth and torpor can spread via unwise attention to boredom and depressionWatching the thinking patterns we have around slothful mind-statesHow sloth and torpor can signal us to other hidden emotionsOver-consumption and being attentive to what we put into our bodiesThe benefit and value of the eight preceptsHaving a balance of both concentration and energyDeepening our insight into the impermanence of the hindrancesMindfulness as the most basic strategy for overcoming lazinessAdding in more objects to our meditation as an antidote to the sinking mindBeing alert even in times of low energy as practice for conscious dyingFinding inspiration in reading the dhamma, listening to a recording, or chantingThis talk was originally published on Dharmaseed“Mindfulness, here, is deepening our insight into the impermanence of the hindrances. If we can stay with it, we see that they come and go by themselves. We don't have to fulfill the desire, we don't have to act on the anger, we don't have to indulge the sleepiness, in order for them to go, we just need to stay with it and we'll see their changing nature simply through the awareness of them.” – Joseph GoldsteinSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Ever wonder how much your life was shaped before you even took your first breath? Our journey doesn't start at birth – it begins in the womb, where we're already soaking up the world around us.In this episode, we're diving into the hidden influences of our earliest environment. I'm sharing how stress echoes through generations, some personal reflections about my own pregnancies (including the fears I had about my daughter's exposure to stress before birth), and why understanding these early imprints can be so empowering as we heal. In this episode I'm sharing:How our prenatal experience sets the stage for life and how the womb may not be the paradise we think it isHow chronic stress during pregnancy can alter genetic functioning and impact a child's stress response for life My personal journey with prenatal anxiety after a traumatic miscarriage and its potential effects on my daughterThe generational nature of trauma and how our ancestors' stress might still be living in our bodiesThe broader societal issue of women being the emotional shock absorbers of the world (and what it's costing us)Why we need to shift our perspective from blaming parents and what we should be looking at insteadThe empowering realization that healing is always possible, no matter when we become aware of these patternsI'd love to connect with you about this episode! Most of us have inhabited our bodies for several decades, so why do we know so little about it? Why aren't we versed in the history of menstruation and the uterus? Why are the female body and menstruation still often cloaked in mystery and shame? Quite simply, it's because of the massive gender gap in science and research that we've often been left guessing about the “whys” and “hows” of being in a female body. Society and cultural norms have also told us to “keep quiet” about our periods and reproductive system and, sadly, many women our age were told to do just that. Dr. Kate Clancy and her book Period: The Real Story of Menstruation, answer and uncover the many mysteries of the female body. She blends history, personal experience, and science to challenge many of the myths and false assumptions that have defined the study of the uterus.Clancy is an American biological anthropologist who specializes in reproductive health. She has a BA cum laude from Harvard University in Biological Anthropology and Women's Studies. She also has a PhD in Anthropology from Yale. Currently, she is an Associate Professor at the University of Illinois, in the Department of Anthropology. Her additional research and policy advocacy work focuses on sexual harassment in science and academia.Today, she and Sara discuss her book and a wide range of topics including:The ongoing gender gap in research and scienceChallenging the assumption that menstruation causes iron deficiencyThe uterus' adaptive role in pregnancy as an active participant in the processFollicular waves and their role in ovulationWomen have a sperm crypt?!Environmental stressors that can affect menstruation and the endocrine systemHow weight and beauty standards are culturally constructed and can be harmful to all bodiesThe complex truths of evaluating the COVID vaccine's impact on women's reproductive system"Human biology or any biology," says Dr. Clancy, " is just wild and wonderful." After this conversation, we know you'll agree.

This week we're talking all about body diversity! In June, the leaders of three leading UK trade bodies, the Ad Association, ISBA and the IPA, wrote an opinion piece in Campaign that said tracking carbon impact is vital, but questioned the premise of 'Advertised Emissions' - a framework published by Purpose Disruptors as a way to encourage the advertising industry to take responsibility for its climate impact. Purpose Disruptors then responded by explaining its emissions methodology.Campaign invited ISBA director General Phil Smith and Purpose Disruptor co-founder Jonathan Wise to discuss the matter further. They debate the best way to track carbon impact and the ad industry's wider responsibility to avert climate change.Campaign creativity and culture editor Gurjit Degun also joins to talk about the cost of pitching, using data gleaned from School Reports submissions.Lastly, Nicky Bullard, group chief creative officer, Mullenlowe Group UK, and Paul Stanway, creative director and co-founder of XYZ, discuss the latest ads: Apple "Battery for miles" (in-house); Nike "What the football" by Wieden & Kennedy Portland; and NYX Professional Makeup "Beach club" by Backlash.Stanway joins the Campaign Podcast in the wake of the news that XYZ, the brand experience agency he co-founded with managing director Will Mould has been acquired by 160over90, the shop owned by global entertainment company Endeavor. He shares his thoughts on the acquisition.Further reading:Ad chiefs warn: 'Advertised emissions' won't help our industry to reach net zeroWhy 'Advertised emissions' matter: Purpose Disruptors hits back at ad trade bodiesThe cost of pitching - and how many brands are payingXYZ sells to 160over90 Hosted on Acast. This is my second interview with Nadine Artemis. If you missed the first one, check out episode #51 on Renegade Beauty, where Nadine lays out the details on how to achieve healthy skin.In this episode we get into the truth about dental care, and how you can take control of your dental health. Many are realizing that it is up to each of us to take control of our own health and educate ourselves (and act on that education) on how to nourish and detox, but not as many realize that dental health is a big part of that picture and that there is much we can do for our oral health right from home.I've always found it odd that our system separates the health of the mouth from the rest of the body and that the two professions don't communicate with one another when in fact they together are part of our whole being, to which we can also add our mental, emotional and spiritual health. True health is a whole picture project folks! You're going to want to get some of Nadine's amazing products whether you are looking to maintain the great teeth (and skin) that you have, or if you have some nagging problems that you can't get ahead of. Kristin is a multi passionate director, writer, producer, artist, and poet, who compares the hero's journey — or the outer world journey — and the heroine's journey — or the inner world journey. The hero's journey is an amazing framework, and when I first heard Kristin speak about the heroine's journey, there was no doubt in my mind, I needed to get her on the podcast. There may be a temptation in some circles to dismiss intuition as witchy, folkloric, or unscientific but there's actually a ton of science around this. Our guest, author, actress and director, Amber Tamblyn will guide us through this. Tamblyn argues that intuition is a trainable skill but that this south-of-the-neck intelligence is often obscured by being too stuck in our heads and out of touch with our bodies. Tamblyn has been nominated for Emmy®, Golden Globe, and Independent Spirit Awards. Her work in television spans over two decades including starring roles on House M.D., and Two and a Half Men. On the big screen, she starred in movies such as The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and 127 Hours. She's written seven books, including her latest, which is called Listening in the Dark: Women Reclaiming the Power of Intuition. In this episode we talk about:How she defines intuition, and the role it plays as a bridge between the conscious and unconscious parts of our mindsWhy we are conditioned to validate rational intelligence over intuitive intelligence The gut/brain connection, and why the enteric nervous system is known as the “second brain”Practical tips for getting better at listening to our bodiesThe role of meditation in boosting intuitionThe scientific research that points towards the importance of having a relationship with nature, and how this can improve our intuitionThe relationship between intuition and creativityHow we should think about dream lifeWhat to do when you're not sure whether you should trust your gutHow to recognize the difference between anxiety and intuitionAnd why our society has downplayed the importance of intuition, which has been a tool used against women and menFull Shownotes: https://www.tenpercent.com/podcast-episode/amber-tamblyn-555See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Recently, I've been hearing a lot of people say that they feel like body acceptance isn't for them. They're excluded from being able to love and accept their body, exactly as it is, because they aren't a certain shape or size. This is amplified by the fact that most of the people working in the body acceptance space are straight-sized themselves, which isn't always relatable if you're in a larger body and struggling with your body image. In this episode, I'll cover:Why this was such a big problem in my recovery journeyHow the body acceptance space is dominated by people in smaller bodiesThe importance of working with someone who you can relate toWhy ‘as long as you're healthy, that's all that matters' is BSWant to learn to love your body? Though it's one of the greatest privileges in life to have a body, it can also be a difficult and complicated gift, especially for women. Many of us are in a constant battle of trying to understand and be kind to our bodies. In today's episode, we discuss barriers and fears that hinder our relationship with our bodies, and how we're working to heal those wounds. Can you remember a time when you felt neutral and carefree about your body? Anna discusses how her family's constant commentary on each other's weight trickled down to her at a very young age and contributed to her eating disorders later in life. Though Nina made it out mostly unscathed from that kind of criticism, she remembers how her body development brought unwanted attention at a young age. In adulthood, factors like illness, abuse, sex, and relationships became crutial to how we took care of our bodies. Over time, we've learned to check in and treat it with the tenderness that it deserves. Mindful movement and self care aren't just buzz words–they're tools to help heal and develop your relationship with your body. Tune in to today's episode to hear more about how we're writing our own rules for our bodies. “Gut-health” has become a buzzword in the wellness industry, but what exactly is our gut and how do we know if it's healthy? What role does it play in our overall health? What is its connection to the brain? Do probiotics or fermented foods do any good for our gut? Does fasting impact the gut microbiome? What are 5 things we can do for a healthier gut? Dr. Emeran Mayer, gastroenterologist, author, neuroscientist, and professor in the Departments of Medicine, Physiology and Psychiatry. At the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA joins us on the SuperAge podcast to discuss these questions and shares his expertise on the gut microbiome. What you will learn: What the “gut” and “microbiome” actually areHow the health of our gut impacts the health of everything else in our bodiesThe guts connection to our brainWhether probiotics and fermented foods really work for improving gut healthHow fasting may impact the gut5 things to do for a healthier gut“I think what we have observed is that our modern lifestyle is not very conducive to a healthy gut because of what we eat and the whole standard American diet story that plays a significant role.” “What happens in the gut does not stay in the gut. It goes through various signaling molecules to every part of the body.”“If you're stressed in your brain, or you have negative emotions in your brain, your gut knows it, because it gets these signals. And vice versa, if your gut is imbalanced, your brain knows it.” Listen to the SuperAge podcast wherever you get your pods. Today we’re going to be chatting about the importance of intuitive decision making and why this is a superpower that us women have. Intuitive decision marking is rooted in our intuition obviously and when we go back to the concept of feeling (the feminine energy) and thinking (the masculine energy) the concept of intuition is rooted in our innate ability as women to make decisions from our intuition. Oftentimes when we hear of intuition, we think of our gut reaction and over time we as women, especially us that may have been over indexed on masculine energy, may have begun to override our intuition with our thinking brains. I’ve seen time and time again women who have actively moved away from their intuitive skillset and into their thinking skillset and each time I see them leaving money on the table. In this episode: Sharing stories of how we use our intuition How intuition feels like in our bodiesThe importance of tracking of tracking our feelingsAre you looking to dive into reconnecting to your divine feminine essence but not sure where to start? Andy Sewell’s first book The Heath was a winner of the International Photobook Award 2012 and is included in Martin Parr’s The Photobook: A History Vol. III. His work is found in private and public collections including The V&A Museum, The MAST Foundation, The Museum of London, Columbia University Art Collection, Eric Franck Collection, The Hyman Collection and the National Media Museum. He was born in East London and grew up in the commuter belt north of the city, a place part rural and part suburban. He now lives in East London again. His work explores the permeable quality of the boundaries we put between things. The Heath is about the paradox of a place managed to feel wild. Something Like a Nest explores the gap between the countryside as an idea, somewhere often imagined and depicted as an escape from modernity, and the messier, enmeshed landscape we find there. His latest book, Known and Strange Things Pass, just published by Skinnerboox, looks at the cables carrying the Internet across the Atlantic and costal locations they link. Exploring, in these places where the digital network is concentrated, a literal and metaphorical entwining of worlds we think of as separate - the ocean and the Internet, the close and the distant, the physical and the virtual, what we think of as natural with the cultural and technological. Andy’s work is defined by the relationships created between pictures. It is driven by a fascination with the contradictory quality of seeing – the feeling that as we look closer at things they become more lucid, more themselves, and yet, and at the same time, more entangled, unknowable, and mysterious. On episode 139, Andy discusses, among other things:His new book, Known and Strange Things PassHaving two bodiesThe importance of chanceNoticing what’s thereResearching the projectThe feeling of embodiment from being in waterHis Previous book, Something Like a NestFirst book, The HeathReferenced:Hyperobjects by Timothy MortonSeamus HeaneyHiroshi Sugimoto Website | Instagram | Twitter“As I grew up, I was taught the more closely you see something, the more you know about it. The more data we have on it, the less mysterious it becomes. I find the opposite is true. The closer you look at stuff the more mysterious, the more entangled it becomes.”

"acts as a glue to bind the senses together- without it- those neurons may not be able to build their properties correctly. You wouldn't know where you are with respect to the world or where objects are with respect to you- the peripersonal mechanism would be crippled." Spatial boundaries and body schema in relation to processing self to the environment. How stress impacts the startle reflex and rethinking the startle as a social messaging system. How our peripersonal space expands to encompass the tools we use....eating utensils, writing implements, hammers........what happens when this system crashes!Evolution of the smileHow our emotions impact the protective bubble about our bodiesThe devastating social impact of Dyspraxia, which is the difficulty coordinating the body in spaceTo find out more about Michael- https://pni.princeton.edu/faculty/michael-grazianoBooks by Michael- https://www.amazon.com/Michael-S-A-Graziano/e/B001JS3WKW
