This month, we discuss books about music or musicians, one of the prompts on the Books and Bites Bingo Reading Challenge. From mixtapes to AI, music memoirs to YA novels, we share our thoughts on both music and books. Michael's PickMichael recommends The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music by Dave Grohl. This memoir describes the passion that Grohl has had for music since he was a kid and goes into his punk-rock roots. He tells stories that are hilarious and heartfelt, from his days in Scream to the rise and fall of Nirvana and the formation of the Foo Fighters and everything in between.Pairing: KFC and champagne, a staple the Foo Fighters enjoy after special occasions.Carrie's PickCarrie enjoyed Don't Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You by Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams. Williams writes about her journey to becoming an artist, from her chaotic childhood to her struggle to get signed by a recording company to her eventual success. If you've ever aspired to make art, whether music, literature, or something else, you'll find her persistence inspiring.Pairing: Monday's Red Beans from Melissa M. Martin's cookbook, Mosquito Supper Club: Cajun Recipes from a Disappearing Bayou.Jacqueline's PickJacquelline chose Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist a YA romance by David Levithan and Rachel Cohn. The authors write alternating chapters for each character's point of view, with Cohn voicing Norah's point of view and Levithan doing the same for Nick. The characters bond through their shared love of musicians and music. The novel takes readers through a catalog of music from rock and roll to mainstream punk, as the characters navigate New York's Indie rock scene.Pairing: Mai Tai Mocktail Party Punch.

“We're coming to a place in time where life itself is making us go inner world focused.” –Kristin HanggiThere's more than the hero's journey. Kristin Hanggi and I are talking about the heroine's journey and feminine productivity. Kristin is a multi passionate director, writer, producer, artist, and poet, who compares the hero's journey — or the outer world journey — and the heroine's journey — or the inner world journey. The hero's journey is an amazing framework, and when I first heard Kristin speak about the heroine's journey, there was no doubt in my mind, I needed to get her on the podcast. Right now we are living the heroine's journey individually and collectively. We need to heal our feminine and masculine. The creative path will take you to your stuck places. You need to stay in the process to evolve. It's not always comfortable and is often hard. We talk about overcoming limiting beliefs and thoughts of scarcity. Most importantly, Kristin shares the framework that helps navigate our sould's journey. We talk about: The role of mentors in the heroine's journeyThe Dark Night of the Soul and what comes afterSeparation from the feminine, losing connection to the earth and our bodiesThe outward quest for success and spiritual aridness and not feeling fulfilled Healing our relationships with our bodies and the earth and reconnecting to and learning to trust the original wisdom that lives inside Finding the integration or sacred marriage between the masculine and feminineABOUT KRISTINKristin Hanggi is a theater, television, and film director as well as a passionate multi-hyphenate — writer, producer, artist and poet. She is best known for directing and developing the international smash-hit Rock of Ages, which received five Tony Award nominations, including a nomination for Best Direction of a Musical. As a film and television director, Hanggi directed an episode on the Emmy-nominated Netflix musical series Julie and the Phantoms. It's the end of the year, so we are once again reading a Levithan & Cohn collaboration. Unlike Dash & Lily... last year, though, we're not quite as satisfied this time around. Is it the manic pace of this "all in one night" romantic adventure or just the fact that the book doesn't offer enough beyond its obvious romance?Sadly the film only fares a little better! While Ari Graynor's Caroline is a runaway delight and Kat Dennings can do no wrong, Michael Cera has baggage, the queer representation is not GLAAD award-worthy and the repeated, egregious use of the "R" word is a major distraction (oh these 2000-2010 YA films). Neither book nor film are a slam dunk, but overall this is a step-up from recent full-length episodes. The Baby-Sitters Club. You may know the books, but do you know their story? David Levithan--Editorial Director at Scholastic; Founding Editor of Scholastic's PUSH imprint; and New York Times bestselling author of 23 books, including Boy Meets Boy, Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist (co-written with Rachel Cohn), and, most recently, The Mysterious Disappearance of Aidan S. as told to his brother--invites Eve and Julie into the Baby-Sitters clubhouse to talk about the impact and legacy of the 300-book (and counting) series. With more than 176 million copies sold, this juggernaut has inspired spinoffs, graphic novels, a movie, and two different TV series. Julie and Eve discuss David's journey editing the series for nearly three decades--starting as a 19-year-old Scholastic intern--and what it's taught him about writing and editing; what it was like to work with Ann M. Martin--the original author of the series--to create a literary world that multiple authors have collaborated on; and how the series has influenced a generation of writers, from Elizabeth Acevedo to Jenny Han. Eve also shares with David her personal connection to Scholastic. Find us on Twitter (@bookdreamspod) and Instagram (@bookdreamspodcast), or email us at contact@bookdreamspodcast.com. 2020 has been one for the books, hasn’t it. See my pun there? A worldwide pandemic, a truly historic election, racial unrest, murder hornets, shortages of toilet paper, and massive fires in California are just a few weird things that happened this year; we all took solace where we could. For book lovers like us, it usually meant a book but could also include new hobbies like puzzles and baking for me, crocheting for Carrie, and wine for the both of us. For this last episode of 2020, Carrie and I decided to talk about some notable books that we didn’t have a chance to talk about during the year and also take a look forward to 2021 to some books we are anxious to read. Technology has really been messing with us at the end of 2020. Several pieces we recorded didn’t work, or disappeared, or just plain sucked. Anything that could go wrong did. So we had to get creative with this episode. And like many things about 2020, that creativity to do something different sometimes makes something better. I hope in this case this episode is better than the one we started with before the gremlins inside our computer got a hold of it. We will be taking a few weeks off. Our minis are back and just in time to get in the holiday spirit. This episode we've got a book that Netflix grabbed, and honestly did a great job with! We've got carolers, mid day showings of Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer, a very large book store, and even some sad and snarky teens. What more could you ask for in a holiday book? Oh! There's some peppermint schnapps of course. So grab yourself some eggnog, turn on that TV fireplace, and listen in. It follows cynic, Dash, who has hated Christmas ever since his ex-girlfriend, Sophia dumped him, and Lily, a hopeless romantic who loves the holidays. It's the most wonderful time of the year...for a scavenger hunt across NY city! Brenna and Joe are feeling nostalgia for Big Apple circa Dec 2019 (when the series was filmed), though there's a bit less passion for stars Austin Abrams and Midori Francis, who are well-cast and also mildly aggravating.Plus: we speculate who writes who in the book, tackle the ridiculous written ending, praise director Fred Savage and disagree about the use of holiday music. This month, Ryan Van Winkle and our own Sasha de Buyl interview best-selling YA authors Garth Nix (@garthnix), Leigh Bardugo (@LBardugo) and David Levithan (@loversdiction) about returning to different worlds, crafting a series and creating characters that break the mould.Garth Nix is the Australian-born author of the Old Kingdom series, the Keys to the Kingdom series and the Seventh Tower series. Written almost 20 years ago, Sabriel was the first book in the Old Kingdom series and told the story of a young girl tasked with making sure the dead stay dead. Though Garth hasn't returned to the world of the Old Kingdom since 2003's Abhorsen, last year's Clariel found him back there, this time several hundred years before the events of Sabriel. Garth talks to Sasha about what it was like to go back, and why he went there again.Leigh Bardugo is the Jerusalem-born, LA-raised author of The Grisha Trilogy, a YA fantasy series that comprises Shadow and Bone, Seige and Storm and the third in the trilogy, Ruin and Rising. Shadow and Bone tells the story of Alina Starkov, an orphan who has to harness powers she didn't even know she had in order to save her best friend. The novel debuted on the New York Times bestseller list and the series has proved incredibly popular. Leigh talks to Ryan about crafting a trilogy, realising your potential and never taking a break. David Levithan is the hugely popular American author of a number of YA books, including Boy Meets Boy and The Realm of Possibility, and books for adults including The Lover's Dictionary. In collaboration with Rachel Cohn, he wrote Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, which was adapted into a film in 2008. His newest novel Every Day tells the the story of A, a character that wakes up in a different body and in a different life each morning. David talks to Ryan about creating a character without physical characteristics, what makes us ourselves and the nature of love.Podcast contents00:00 - 01:02 Introduction01:10 - 14:08 Garth Nix interview14:09 - 22.39 Leigh Bardugo interview22:40 - 36:27 David Levithan interviewBook Talk is produced by Colin Fraser of Culture Laser Productions.

Written under the joint pen name David Van Etten, Likely Story and its sequels All That Glitters and Red Carpet Riot (on sale July 9, 2009) tell the story of Mallory, just your typical teenage girl living in SoCal–except that her mother is an over-the-top soap opera diva and she's caught up in a hot love quadrangle with a teen soap hunk. After an explosive confrontation with the aforementioned diva (Mal's mom is so fab, her name is never mentioned!), Mallory blogs about how ridiculous and unbelievable the soap opera her mother stars on can be. Mal writes about how if she had the chance to write a soap, it would be realistic and find its drama in real life situations, in other words a likely story. Imagine Mal's surprise when the network gets wind of the blog post and decides to cancel their long-running daytime drama and greenlights a new teen soap based on Mallory's premise! Did we mention the soap the network cancels is the one Mal's Mommy Dreariest stars on?You'll want to tune in to hear Van Etten, Levithan and Ozanich talk about how the Likely Story book series came into being. Learn how OLTL ultimately facilitated Van Etten and Ozanich becoming writing partners when the soap hired Ozanich an intern. Find out how at a Gotham party one night, Levithan, author of such teen classics as Boy Meets Boy and Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (with Rachel Cohn) and editor of the smash hit The Babysitters' Club novel series for Scholastic, became intrigued by the idea of helping the pair bring Mallory's story to life. You'll learn what it's like to write a book series with not one, or two authors, but three. Van Etten and Ozanich, while swearing none of the characters are based on anyone they've met in their soapy pursuits (Talk about a likely story!), reveal how their day jobs did in fact help color Mallory's world. Is Mallory speaking for every disgruntled soap opera fan with the impassioned rant she posts on her blog? What about when she actually lands her dream job? As Mallory quickly finds out writing a daily soap opera, while dealing with temperamental divas, a reluctant hottie leading man and network interference, isn't as easy as she once believed, are we getting a glimpse of what it's really like for the harried men and women who bring us our favorite soaps five-days-a-week? What about Van Etten, do he and other real life soap scribes ever log on to blogs like DC or message boards to read what we're saying about their work? If so how does it effect the writing process?Ozanich, also an acclaimed playwright (The Lightening Field) shares how he's dealt with some of the sticky situations Mallory finds herself facing in the Likely Story books, such as having to let down friends who thought they were a shoe-in for a role in one of his dramatic works. Onzanich also runs hilarious, SNL-worthy interference for his pal Van Etten, when Jamey and Luke try to pry a few juicy spoilers about ABC Daytime's hottest soap out of the Emmy-winning breakdown writer. Levithan, an admitted novice to the wonderful and wacky world of daytime soap operas, talks about how he brought to the table the basic tenets of characterization and story to help make even Mallory's more larger-than-life adventures ring true. The editor for Scholastic's PUSH imprint shares how the coming of age tale, despite its soapy flavor, is quite universal. Levithan also tells us how he feels about the success of the big screen adaptation of Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, and gives other writers a bit of advice on how to make their books readily adaptable for film. Speaking of adapting literary works for the screen, could a Likely Story television series or film project be in the works? Tune in to find out. Then go to Amazon.com to purchase the Must Read Likely Story and All That Glitters. You can also pre-order Red Carpet Riot.
