Marty Stein has been scouting junior hockey players for 27 years. Currently, Marty is working for the resurgent Buffalo Sabres, covering the western region of North American. If there is a 17 year old playing Junior A, or Major Junior, Marty is going to know about them - that's his job.Prior to Buffalo, Stein had a similar role with the Detroit Red Wings, where he started in 1996. After 4 Stanley Cups, and 2 Calder Cups, you can say Marty has seen it all from the scouting perspective. In this interview you will hear about the research scouts do, the types of attributes Marty is looking for, a comparison of Jr. A to Major Junior, how team compile their draft lists and makes their selections, and much more!Enjoy the conversation with Marty Stein!

In episode 196 of the Glass and Out Podcast, we're joined by Brad Yetman, Head Coach of the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey. At just 31-years-old, Yetman is one of hockey's up and coming coaching talents. He is currently in the midst of his fourth season with the Huskies. In 2019, he was hired as an Assistant Coach on Mario Pouliot's staff. Late in his third season, he took over the reigns as Interim Head Coach after Pouliot stepped away from the team due to health issues. He was ultimately handed the role full time, despite barely two years of experience coaching at the Major Junior level. It's also worth noting that Yetman is the first New Foundlander to be a Head Coach at the Major Junior level. Prior to joining the Huskies, Brad was the Head Coach of the East Coast Blizzards program, in the Newfoundland U18 Major Hockey League. During this time he also scouted for the Shawinigan Cataracts, the team that originally drafted him in the Q. As a player, he spent four seasons in junior hockey, but had to retire early due to concussions. He then shifted his focus away from playing hockey to his education, as he earned a Masters in Education and Counseling Psychology Listen as he shares his experiences as one of the youngest coaches in Major Junior Hockey, the value of grading player performance in practice, and why players will only be vulnerable if they recognize their coach is willing to be vulnerable as well.
Troy Mick has been around hockey or involved in hockey his entire life. Mick played in the BCHL for the Vernon Lakers at 14 years old, and then played with the Portland Winterhawks and Regina Pats of the WHL. Mick put up an absurd 200+ goals in his 4 seasons of Major Junior hockey. His effort earned him a 130 overall selection in the 1988 NHL entry draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins.Mick went on to play pro hockey for 3 seasons before getting involved in coaching.Troy was a head coach at the BCHL, WHL, and NCDC levels for 12seasons and has also sat in GM and President positions along the way.Currently Mick is the Director of Hockey for the Wenatchee Wild competitive youth programs and coaches the 18U and 16U teams. This is a great hockey discussion! Enjoy
NRL CEO Andrew Abdo has backed a controversial change to junior rugby league. The change will see teams play until the under-13's for no competition points, meaning there will be no grand finals for the younger grades. Mr Abdo states the NSWRL is the last state or territory to implement the change. The Continuous Call Team says the decision which is due to be announced in the next fortnight will damage the sport. "I think it's disgraceful that kids don't have an opportunity to continue on to win and create those memories as a child of winning grand finals," says Mark Riddell. Mr Abdo recognises the decision has been received poorly, but says there is research to back it. "This has been carefully thought out and carefully researched. "I don't think this has been as clearly communicated as effectively as it could have been," says Mr Abdo.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Eric Godard is a self-admitted unlikely Stanley Cup Champion. But that doesn't mean he wasn't a big part of the 2009 Pittsburgh Penguin championship.Godard never thought he'd play Major Junior. He was wrong.Godard never thought he'd be a professional hockey player. He was wrong. And Godard never thought he'd be an NHL'er and a Stanley Cup Champ. But he was wrong again.Eric climbed the hockey ranks by being a great teammate and by being one tough SOB.Judged by some of his peers as the toughest of his era (and his era was TOUGH), Eric amassed over 1000 PIMs in the AHL over 800 in the NHL - and Eric rarely took a minor penalty! In this episode we talk about Eric's road to the NHL, the mindset of an NHL enforcer, his new job as scout for the Minnesota Wild, have a lot of laughs and share some stories.Enjoy!
Garry Davidson brings over 30 years of hockey experience to the podcast. Garry has been a head coach, a GM, an Owner, scout, and Director of Player Development at the Junior A and Major Junior level. Enjoy!

In that very candid feature interview presented by Sense Arena, Fucale shares the excitement and hard work that went into a standout junior career — two trips to the Memorial Cup, including one win, plus two trips to the World Juniors where he came away with a gold medal and shares the Canadian record for most wins at the tournament. In this episode I reveal my personal recruiting system that I've developed over the last 10+ years that's helped me get an opportunity to play at the highest levels in hockey. I talk about the biggest mistakes kids make in the recruiting process when trying to get to the next level. I break down the bubble theory, how I've both benefited and been a victim of it, and how to utilize it to your advantage to create worth for yourself as a goaltender. And I dive deep into what a good fit looks like, and the system I use to create and identify those opportunities to significantly increase your odds of moving up to the next level. Sam Bennett is an interesting case study. Sam was Calgary’s 2014 4th overall pick. He was the #1 Ranked North American player going into the draft. He put up solid numbers as a 16 year old in his first Major Junior season, and had an exceptional season as a 17 year old. His third year was overshadowed by a controversial injury. He made his Flames debut by scoring 3 playoff goals (plus 1 assist) in 11 games in the 2014/15 season series win over Vancouver and followed that up with 18 goals in his rookie season. He has struggled with consistency and scoring throughout his 4 full NHL seasons and has not been able to replicate his goal and point totals in his rookie season. His underlying numbers and counting stats are both just OK and he seems to have found role on the third line. He is still a physical player who can get the puck to scoring areas but has been no where close to what we or the Flames projected him to be. Is he now a known quantity or does he still have room to develop?

Today I want to talk to you about Junior Hockey - If I were to ask you where is the Worlds oldest Major Junior Hockey Franchise (operated from their original location and use the same name), you might think it may be in Canada. - Most people would think it is likely on the East Coast around where the orgininal 6 NHL teams are. - You would be WRONG - The WORLDS oldest Junior Hockey Team is in REGINA - Founded in 1917 called the Regina Patricias and then shortened to Regina Pats in 1923. - they were the farm team to the Montreal Canadians in the 1940's and 50's - Who knew? One more reason why WE LOVE REGINA!!

Ryan, Geeta and Dave are here this week to talk about what's going on in the NHL right now. P Mac skype's in, despite crippling illness to chime in on Travis Hamonic and if he could wind up on the Canucks. They also talk about Patrick Kane's bounce back year following his awful summer and how it could mean bad press for the NHL, similar to Tom Brady and the NFL. They look at the revamped NHL All-Star Game, whether Willie D should stay on as the Vancouver Canucks head Coach or if they should replace him if they plan to make the playoffs. Finally, the gang talks about Major Junior hockey in Canada, British Columbia and the influence the Penticton Vees have on the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. Really fun podcast this week, Enjoy!
