“American Movie” is a movie about … making a movie. When the beloved documentary was released in 1999, it quickly became a cult classic. “American Movie” was filmed in the Milwaukee area and its subject, Mark Borchardt, has gone on to inspire many artists and filmmakers. WPR’s Evan Casey takes a look at the film’s lasting legacy.
This week, actor and filmmaker Jeremy Schuetze – whose first feature Anacoreta is now available on digital and on demand – digs into American Movie, Chris Smith's beloved documentary about Wisconsin auteur Mark Borchardt's attempts to make a horror short with the help of his eccentric friends and family. Your genial host Norm Wilner sees more of himself in this movie than he'd probably want to admit.

If you've seen Hearts of Darkness, you can better appreciate what Coppola endured while making Apocalypse Now; if you've seen River of Dreams, you can watch in wonder as Herzog talks about the shooting Fitzcaraldo and really moving that boat through the jungle. American Movie (1999) aims to do the same thing for Mark Borchardt's low-budget independent horror film Coven. How you respond to American Movie depends on how you respond to Borchardt: is he simply a pretentious jerk who thinks he's the next George A. Romero? Or is he what Thomas Gray would call “some mute inglorious Milton,” whose work deserves a wider audience? In this episode, the guys mention the work of English poet Thomas Gray, whose famous “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard” is applied to Mark Borchardt. The Kettle Moraine State Forest is one of the crown jewels of our state. Roughly 60,000 acres of some of the most unique landscape in the world, molded and carved out by the last ice age. While its reputation for some of the best outdoor recreation in the country is well known, the Kettle Moraine has a much more mysterious side as well. For decades, thousands of eyewitnesses have reported sightings of creatures seemingly unknown to our sciences roaming these woods. Half-man, half-wolf beasts, goatmen, UFOs, witches, ghostly hauntings, and even a possible vortex have followed hundreds of years of Native folklore surrounding this most uncommon of regions. Scott and Mickey dicuss these legends, with emphasis on the Beast of Bray Road, Goatman, otherwordly visitors, and the famous Witches of Whitewater on Episode 26 of Badger Bizarre! Eli Roth returns and this time he's brought fellow filmmaker, Mark Borchardt. Mark is the creator and director behind the horror short, “Coven,” and the subject of the 1999 film, “American Movie,” which documented the 3 years Mark spent writing, shooting, and editing “Coven.” Mark and Eli talk personal movies versus studio films, the creative process, the benefit of film school, what it was like to shoot on actual film and have to wait for it to be developed, and how they feel about the future of movies and the theater experience in the age of COVID. The threesome also talk about some of their favorite movies and directors (like Werner Herzog), and Mark speaks to the “Coven” sequel and when that may be available. It's a great discussion about the art of film!
Eli Roth returns and this time he’s brought fellow filmmaker, Mark Borchardt. Suspiria (1977) d. Dario Argento written by: Dario Argento, Daria Nicolodi Starring: Jessica Harper Stefania Casini Flavio Bucci Udo Kier Joan Bennett This week on Total Movie Recall, we test our feminist bona fides and flex our rigorous academic muscles dissecting the precise and not-at-all haphazard imagery of Dario Argento's giallo horror film, Suspiria. Ryan fantasizes about disappearing into a Black Forest fairytale world where there are no problems and noted ballerina enthusiast Steve remains unimpressed with the technical rigors of this film. Cool colors, though. Suzy (Jessica Harper) travels to Germany to attend ballet school. When she arrives, late on a stormy night, no one lets her in, and she sees Pat (Eva Axén), another student, fleeing from the school. When Pat reaches her apartment, she is murdered. The next day, Suzy is admitted to her new school, but has a difficult time settling in. She hears noises, and often feels ill. As more people die, Suzy uncovers the terrifying secret history of the place. Liz and Sacha sit at the Some Office studio at the Cards Against Humanity building and enact pages from a binder found at a thrift store full of some girl's *NSYNC fan fiction that focuses on band member Joey Fatone. In this episode, our narrator Kelly learns the truth behind controversial pictures featuring a mystery girl with Joey. She also talks about going back to school, adopts a chimp and goes to the Bahamas. We snicker like twelve year old boys when someone accidentally says “thrust” instead of “trust,” discuss Whitney Houston “goosing it up,” deliberate whether to eat a banana, make grand hand gestures that nobody can see, incorrectly wish happy Krampusnacht on the wrong date and much more. All this, while Sacha plays songs on his piano of westward expansion mixed with holiday standards, most of which kind of sound like music that one would play on some horrific judgement day. And as usual, we laugh ourselves silly with how preposterous the whole thing is. Links we said we'd include: Sacha sang vocals on a cover of Gloomy Sunday you can listen to here for the movie called The Hagstone Demon that stars Mark Borchardt. Liz was on a reality show. This week we are watching the 1999 cult-favorite documentary American Movie. The film follows filmmaker Mark Borchardt as he attempt to make a short independent film.
This week's podcast revisits one of the all-time great cult classics, a no-budget splatterfest from director Sam Raimi called "The Evil Dead." Charlie and Eric also talk about another underground legend, the short-horror film "Coven," from director Mark Borchardt, and they share their love for other homemade horror and genre films.
Brett hosts Josh, Stevie, and Pappy in spoiling the documentary American Movie! In this cult-favorite documentary, Mark Borchardt, an aspiring filmmaker from a working-class Wisconsin background, is set on finishing his low-budget horror movie, despite a barrage of difficulties. Plagued by lack of cash, unreliable help and numerous personal problems, Mark wants to complete the film to raise funds for a more ambitious drama. With the assistance of his bumbling but loyal friend Mike Schank, Mark struggles to move forward, making for plenty of bittersweet moments. Release date: November 5, 1999 (USA) Director: Chris Smith Box office: 1.2 million USD Music composed by: Mike Schank, Cliff Burton, James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett Producers: Chris Smith, Sarah Price
For your Consideration was a podcast that Alex Saltz and Mark started back in the summer of 2011, the goal was to review the Pilot episodes of TV shows and Chris Hasler began co-hosting with Mark towards the end of season 1. Eventually, Chris and Mark would end the For Your Consideration show after 24 episodes to start a new show, with a focus on films entitled PhuYuck in January of 2013. PhuYuck would run for a total of 10 episodes before Chris and Mark renamed the show and started over again, with VHS Rewind! which encapsulates ALL retro tv and film. We hope you like this look back at where the current show came from. In this throwback episode I bring you, PhuYuck! In this episode Chris and mark discuss the amazing documentaries, American Movie and Overnight. They are both worth your time and absolutely unforgettable! American Movie: Documentary about an aspiring filmmaker's attempts to finance his dream project by finally completing the low-budget horror film he abandoned years before Director: Chris Smith Stars: Mark Borchardt, Mike Schank, Tom Schimmels Overnight: A documentary on the rise and stumble of Troy Duffy, the bartender-cum-filmmaker who was swept up by Miramax's Harvey Weinstein to turn his script for The Boondock Saints into a feature film. Directors: Tony Montana, Mark Brian Smith Writers: Tony Montana, Mark Brian Smith Stars: Troy Duffy, Jeffrey Baxter, Chris Brinker
In second installment of our "Catching Up On Movies About Movies" month, Trevor has Kyle watch one of his favorite documentaries of all time, Chris Smith's intimate portrait of a struggling filmmaker, American Movie (1999)! Following the exploits of wannabe filmmaker Mark Borchardt, the film is an intimate portrait of a frustrated and struggling artist and his efforts to eke out a living, ply his craft, and grapple with his own personal demons. Shot between 1995 and 1997, the film is a precious time capsule of the human condition in middle America. Serious question: Is peppermint schnapps with Sprite a good drink?
Chris Smith’s new Netflix doc FYRE tells the story of huckster Billy McFarland and his doomed Fyre Festival as a compelling piece of meat-and-potatoes journalism that’s far from the verité of Smith’s portrait of Mark Borchardt in 1999’s AMERICAN MOVIE. But for all their surface differences, at heart FYRE is another movie about a charismatic leader who overpromises and under-delivers. After dissecting what FYRE shows us — and doesn’t show us — about McFarland’s history of scammy endeavors, we dig into what connects and separates Smith’s two protagonists in terms of their ambitions, their approaches, and their intent. The new Netflix documentary FYRE: THE GREATEST PARTY THAT NEVER HAPPENEDfinds director Chris Smith returning to a character type that defined his 1999 Sundance breakout AMERICAN MOVIE: the charismatic dreamer who overpromises and under-delivers. In AMERICAN MOVIE, that dreamer is one Mark Borchardt, an independent filmmaker from Milwaukee whose moviemaking dreams are continually stymied by circumstance, both external and of his own making. In this half of our Smith pairing, we revisit AMERICAN MOVIE and Borchardt to see how our perceptions of both have been changed by time and distance, debate what we’re to make of the film’s curious relationships, and analyze how Smith constructs a compelling story around an ambitious eccentric. Plus, some feedback on recent episodes. On this week's episode, the gang dives into the Multiverse to chat about the—fairly enjoyable—Jet Li actioner, The One! What's with putting Jet Li in all those silly wigs? Who decided to QUADRUPLE-DOWN on the nü-metal soundtrack? And does anyone remember One Night at McCool's? PLUS: Christopher Lambert is feeling very, very litigious! The One stars Jet Li, Delroy Lindo, Jason Statham, Carla Gugino, Dean Norris, and, somehow, Mark Borchardt; directed by James Wong.
I was crabby. Jenny was yawny. This is married life, folks. Also I'm obsessed with Mark Borchardt and Jennifer thinks Dr. Strange was called "Superstitious" ... What did you think of this episode? I'm honestly very curious...
Host Paco Romane sat down with comedian, writer and cook Drew Platt. Not only is Drew a great comedian, he is equally adept in the kitchen. Drew made some delicious Wiener schnitzel. We ate and drank some tasty brews and watched American Movie. One of the greatest docs ever made and one of Paco's favorites. Paco and Drew also discuss comedy, small towns, the entertainment biz and so much more!American Movie is a very funny, sometimes sad documentary directed by Chris Smith about Mark Borchardt's life, his friends, his family, his films and his dreams. Mark's life is a daily cliffhanger involving poverty, desperation, discouragement and diehard ambition. He's behind on his child support payments, he drinks too much, he can't even convince his ancient Uncle Bill that he has a future as a moviemaker. He plunders the bank account of his Uncle Bill for funds to continue, he uses his friends and hapless local amateur actors as his cast, he enlists his mother as his cinematographer, and his composer and best friend is a guy named Mike Schank who, after one drug trip too many, seems like the twin of Kevin Smith's Silent Bob. American Movie is a classic documentary!*We are co-presenting a special Oakland screening of The United States Of Detroit on Tuesday April 17th at the New Parkway in Oakland, with director Tyler Norwood and comedian Karinda Dobbins on panel. I'm on fire in an annoying way tonight. But don't worry, I apologize for it. There was also a bit of a snafu where I almost told you to watch the new CAT STEVENS comedy special on Netflix. Can you imagine that shit? Someone should make that for real. And lastly my leaky, unsteady heart set off an impassioned round of applause for each one of you. Ceej and Rob are back and it's time to break out the tinfoil hats. They start off the show with a disclaimer about the current state of their minds and Rob just wants to see Ceej in a duster. Ceej goes to bat for KISS and Gallagher before the duo have a conversation about some of their favorite conspiracies. SNASA is out there, reptilians are real, the phoenix lights may or may not have been flares, and Mark Borchardt is back with new documentary right up their alley. Rob has no shame when it comes to celebrity sex tapes, loves white bro-dudes who do Kung-Fu, they both love Legion for some of the same reasons and Ceej finally hangs out with Doctor Strange.
