https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_America:_The_First_AvengerIn the present day, scientists in the Arctic uncover an old, frozen aircraft. In March 1942, Nazi lieutenant general Johann Schmidt and his men steal a mysterious relic called the Tesseract,[N 2] which possesses untold godly powers, from the town of Tønsberg in German-occupied Norway. In New York City, Steve Rogers is rejected for World War II military recruitment due to his various health and physical problems. While attending an exhibition of future technologies with his best friend, Sgt. James "Bucky" Barnes, Rogers again attempts to enlist. Overhearing Rogers' conversation with Barnes about representing his country in the war, Dr. Abraham Erskine allows Rogers to enlist. He is recruited into the Strategic Scientific Reserve as part of a "super-soldier" experiment under Erskine, Colonel Chester Phillips, and British agent Peggy Carter. Phillips is unconvinced by Erskine's claims that Rogers is the right person for the procedure but relents after seeing Rogers jump on a grenade to save his comrades, unaware that it is a test. The night before the treatment, Erskine reveals to Rogers that Schmidt underwent the procedure prematurely and suffered permanent side-effects.Schmidt and Dr. Arnim Zola harness the energies of the Tesseract, intending to use the power to fuel Zola's inventions, mounting an offensive that will change the world. Schmidt discovers Erskine's location and sends assassin Heinz Kruger to kill him. Erskine subjects Rogers to the super-soldier treatment, injecting him with a special serum and dosing him with "vita-rays". After Rogers emerges from the experiment taller and more muscular, an undercover Kruger kills Erskine and flees with a vial of the serum. Rogers pursues and captures Kruger, but the assassin avoids interrogation by committing suicide with a cyanide capsule. With Erskine dead and his super-soldier formula lost, U.S. Senator Brandt has Rogers tour the nation in a colorful costume as "Captain America" to promote war bonds while scientists study him and attempt to reverse-engineer the formula. In 1943, while on tour in Italy performing for active servicemen, Rogers learns that Barnes' unit was MIA in a battle against Schmidt's forces. Refusing to believe that Barnes is dead, Rogers has Carter and engineer Howard Stark fly him behind enemy lines to mount a solo rescue attempt. Rogers infiltrates the fortress of Schmidt's Hydra division, freeing Barnes and the other prisoners. Rogers confronts Schmidt, who removes a mask to reveal a red, skull-like visage that earned him the sobriquet "the Red Skull". Schmidt escapes and Rogers returns to base with the freed soldiers.Rogers recruits Barnes, Dum Dum Dugan, Gabe Jones, Jim Morita, James Montgomery Falsworth, and Jacques Dernier to attack other known Hydra bases. Stark outfits Rogers with advanced equipment, most notably a circular shield made of vibranium, a rare, nearly indestructible metal. Rogers and his team sabotage various Hydra operations, while he and Carter begin to fall in love. In 1945, the team assaults a train carrying Zola. Rogers and Jones succeed in capturing Zola, but Barnes falls from the train to his apparent death.[N 3] Using information extracted from Zola, the final Hydra stronghold is located, and Rogers leads an attack to stop Schmidt from using weapons of mass destruction on major American cities. Rogers climbs aboard Schmidt's aircraft as it takes off. During the subsequent fight, the Tesseract's container is damaged. Schmidt physically handles the Tesseract, which opens a wormhole into space, sucking him into it. The Tesseract burns through the plane and is lost in the ocean. Seeing no way to land the plane without the risk of detonating its weapons, Rogers radios Carter and says goodbye to her before crashing in the Arctic. Stark later recovers the Tesseract from the ocean floor but is unable to locate Rogers or the aircraft, presuming him dead.Rogers awakens in a 1940s-styled hospital room. Hearing a radio broadcast of a baseball game that he attended in 1941, Rogers grows suspicious, flees outside and finds himself in present-day Times Square, where S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury informs him that he has been "asleep" for nearly 70 years. In a post-credits scene, Fury approaches Rogers and proposes a mission with worldwide ramifications.[N 4]Web: https://theguysreview.simplecast.com/EM: theguysreviewpod@gmail.comIG: @TheGuysReviewPod TW: @The_GuysReview FB: https://facebook.com/TheGuysReviewPod/YT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYKXJhq9LbQ2VfR4K33kT9Q   Please, Subscribe, rate and review us wherever you get your podcasts from!!   Thank you, -The Guys

Received praise from critics, especially for Downey's performance. It was selected by the American Film Institute as one of the ten best films of 2008 and received two nominations at the 81st Academy Awards for Best Sound Editing and Best Visual Effects. This is film one of phase one of the marvel cinematic universe, that has since spawned 26 films, with 12 more currently in production. It is the highest-grossing film franchise of all time, having grossed over $23.5 billion at the global box office. This includes Avengers: Endgame, which became the highest-grossing film of all time upon release. First time you saw the movie? Plot:The film opens with Tony Stark, who has inherited Stark Industries from his late father Howard Stark, in war-torn Afghanistan with his friend and military liaison, Lieutenant colonel James "Rhody" Rhodes, to demonstrate the new "Jericho" missile. After the demonstration, the convoy, and Starks fun-vee, not Rhodys hum-drum-vee, is ambushed and Stark is critically wounded by a missile used by the attackers: one of his company's own. He is captured and imprisoned in a cave by a terrorist group called the Ten Rings. A fellow captive and doctor named Yinsen, implants an electromagnet into Stark's chest to keep the shrapnel shards that wounded him from reaching his heart and killing him... Chris, does your implant even do anything like that to keep you alive? Ten Rings leader Raza offers Stark freedom in exchange for building a Jericho missile for the group, but he and Yinsen know that Raza will not keep his word. S:-The music for this movie is PERFECTION.-RDJ, with all of his life issues, was born to play Tony Stark.  Stark and Yinsen bond, and secretly build a small, powerful electric generator called an arc reactor to power Stark's electromagnet and a prototype suit of powered armor to aid in their escape. Although they keep the suit hidden almost to completion, the Ten Rings discover their hostages' intentions and attack the workshop like Trey attacks a whole fucking pint of ice cream. Like Treys stomach, Yinsen sacrifices himself to divert the terrorists while the suit powers up. The armored Stark battles his way out of the cave (like the ice cream does to Treys stomach) to find the dying Yinsen, then burns the Ten Rings' weapons in anger and flies away, crashing in the desert and destroying the suit. After being rescued by Rhody, Stark returns home and announces that his company will cease manufacturing weapons. Obadiah Stane, his father's old partner and the company's manager, advises Stark that this may ruin Stark Industries and his father's legacy and urges him to reconsider. In his home workshop, Stark builds a sleeker, more powerful version of his improvised armor suit as well as a more powerful arc reactor for it and his chest. Personal assistant Pepper Potts places the original reactor inside a small glass showcase. Though Stane requests details of the Mk2, a suspicious Stark decides to keep his work to himself. S:-I love the use of all the practical effects. They built a REAL suit, and the mk1 suit was real, too. This is before all the computer animation that makes up most of the movies today, like Shang-Chi (which I watched last night).  At a charity event held by Stark Industries, reporter Christine Everhart (the woman from the opening of Trick r Treat) informs Stark that his company's weapons were recently delivered to the Ten Rings and are being used to attack Yinsen's home village, Gulmira. Stark dons his new armor and flies to Afghanistan, where he saves the villagers, and leaves one of the generals to the citizens of the village. Also, one of the BEST visuals, when the tank shoots at him, and he fires a tiny rocket, and walks away when it blows up. While flying home, Stark is attacked by two F-22 Raptors. He reveals his secret identity to Rhodes over the phone in an attempt to end the attack. Meanwhile, the Ten Rings gather the pieces of Stark's prototype suit and meet with Stane, who has been trafficking arms to the Ten Rings and has staged a coup to replace Stark as Stark Industries' CEO by hiring the Ten Rings to kill him. He subdues Raza and has the rest of the group killed. Stane has a massive new suit reverse engineered from the wreckage. Seeking to track his company's illegal shipments, Stark sends Potts to hack into its database. She discovers that Stane hired the Ten Rings to kill Stark, quicker than Tucker could uncover the identity of the famed Opelika Butthole Tickler, who was sneaking into peoples houses, and tickling their buttholes... but the group reneged when they realized they had a direct route to Stark's weapons. Potts meets with Agent Phil Coulson of S.H.I.E.L.D., an intelligence agency, to inform him of Stane's activities. S:-Its a classic, and somewhat tropy move to have the partner and manager be the bad guy all along...but it works so well, and Jeff Bridges does it so well.  Stane's scientists cannot duplicate Stark's miniaturized arc reactor, so Stane ambushes Stark at his home and steals the one from his chest. Stark manages to get to his original reactor to replace it before dying. Potts and several S.H.I.E.L.D. agents attempt to arrest Stane, but he dons his suit and attacks them. Stark fights Stane but is outmatched without his new reactor to run his suit at full capacity. The fight carries Stark and Stane to the top of the Stark Industries building, and Stark instructs Potts to overload the large arc reactor powering the building. This unleashes a massive electrical surge that causes Stane and his armor to fall into the exploding reactor, killing him. The next day, at a press conference, Stark publicly admits to being the superhero the press has dubbed "Iron Man". In a post-credits scene, S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury visits Stark at home, telling him that Iron Man is not "the only superhero in the world", and explaining that he wants to discuss the "Avenger Initiative". S:-My biggest complaint is the end fight was good, but kinda sucks that we've seen this whole movie building the different suits, prototypes, tests, etc... and then we don't even get to see the fight at full capacity. We don't get to see what the suit can really do. Potts has to help him win.   Top Five Trivia of the movie: 5: Rhodys ringtone is the 1966 Iron Man cartoon theme music4:One of the cars in Tony Stark's garage, is a Tesla Roadster, which had not yet been released during the film's production.3: Rock guitarist Tom Morello assisted Ramin Djawadi in composing the film's soundtrack. Morello had a cameo in the film as a security guard who gets killed by the Iron Monger2: This is the last film special effects expert Stan Winston completed before his death.1: The line, "I am Iron Man" was ad-libbed by Robert Downey Jr.. Producer Kevin Feige approved using it in the final cut of the film, and credits this with his decision to largely do away with secret identities in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 T23 Sandlot4 Back to the Future5 Mail order brides Chris:1. sandlots2. We at MMO are continuing the diverse programming of the Oscar Off-Season by diving into a 6 Part Series on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’ll take the 18 films and review them in order, 3 films per episode in the lead up to The Avengers: Infinity War, premiering April 27th. Today’s episode covers Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and Iron Man 2. The format for each review includes a Specs segment that recaps the Box Office, Critical Reception, Awards, and a production note or two. Then we zip through a plot summary and analyze the highs & lows from our usual best scene / worst scene segment before completing these reviews with an Oscar Lens, where we compare the elements of the MCU film with those nominated at that year’s Academy Awards. Iron Man launches the Robert Downey Jr led franchise as well as it grounds the MCU with star power. Showcasing one of the better executed origin stories in the superhero genre, the film also admits some weakness regarding the series wide villain problem and attempts to make up for it with trickery, and one might say, a scary tone of voice. Did they succeed? We also fight over the wigs AND bald caps in this film. The Incredible Hulk begs questions about whether it’s a sequel or a reboot or a seboot or a requel. All we really know is that it’s Edward Norton’s first & only turn as Bruce Banner, and sadly his last starring role as the protagonist in a big budget Hollywood film. As we get into our review, that villain problem isn’t exactly solved in this film either. But there are some fun moments & callbacks to Hulk lore, and we wonder if the box office failure might have been a blessing in disguise. Iron Man 2 both manages to elevate it’s star and round out the ensemble. We get more agency for Pepper Potts, more screen time for Nick Fury, a lot more Rhodie, and we’re introduced to Scarlett Johansson as The Black Widow. So this money making sequel had many highlights going for it. But we also debate how and why it missed the high marks set by the original and how the MCU missed the great opportunities for other films that demanded their own stories. Our MCU Review Part 2 will review the rest of Phase One including Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Marvel’s The Avengers. So stay tuned. Other programming will include another Hollywood News episode, some upcoming movie reviews of new releases about to hit theaters, a Netflix Quarterly with an overview of all the Netflix Original Movies released since we our last 2017 review of the streaming service, and we’ll get back to our retrospectives on former Oscar races.
