My guest is Dan Grec.  He's a Yukon-based adventurer, snowboarder, and photographer.  A few years ago… Dan wanted a more vibrant life… so he quit his day job as an engineer and drove his 2 door Jeep Wrangler 40,000 miles through 16 countries starting in Alaska and ending up in Argentina. That expedition turned into two of the best years of his life. The journey itself… along with the colorful people he met along the way… permanently changed the way he looked at himself… AND the way he looked at life.  He didn't realize it at the time but that adventure also changed his trajectory… and he's continued to explore ever since. In fact, just last year he completed a 54,000 mile... 35 country circumnavigation of the African continent in his 4 doors… Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. Most importantly, Dan's found a sense of joy and happiness that he can maintain in the wildest and toughest circumstances and we're going to talk about that too!     Listen To The Podcast:     Dan Grec RESOURCES:   BOOK: The Road Chose Me (Click here.) Dan's wife Joanne joins him on this week's podcast and shares some of the trials and tribulations of their life and how the choices they've made have impacted them. Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you're listening to the 48 Days Radio show.  In this episode I invited Joanne to join me in responding to the flood of messages we're getting from listeners who feel trapped by their circumstances.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show. Questions: 1.  How much choice do we have in the kind of lives we live?  2.  What happens if you don't even have the support of a spouse?   3.  Where do those whom nobody cares about fit in this?  4. I am 58 and have gotten nowhere in life. When will my turn ever come?  5. I would like to hear any encouragement from experiences of people you might know who hit bottom in every area of life and they went forward. Questions from Dan: What Choices Have You Made? Did you choose the house you're living in? Did you choose the job you have now? Did you choose the car you're driving? Did you choose the college you went to or whether to go to college? Did you choose the person you married?   Comfort is the enemy of progress. P. T. Resources: Dan Miller's Top 10 Recommended Books –  If there is one thing that has fueled my own success it is the books I have read.  I continue a heavy reading schedule and will until the day I die because the wisdom of the ages is so readily available for any of us – it's a shame to not take advantage of it.   I am asked repeatedly what books I recommend. So here are 10 suggestions for 2018.  You'll notice these are not all business or money-making books, but I truly believe that financial success is a byproduct of personal success. If you want to get rich, work on developing YOU! 1.  Frankl, Viktor.  Man's Search for Meaning.  A classic work by a concentration camp prisoner that shows that even when everything else is taken away, we have the ability to choose.  I read this one about every six months just to remind myself of what is really important. 2.  Gire, Ken.  Windows of the Soul.  One of my favorite books ever.  A gentle guide to help us see God in new ways. I believe it opens our eyes to see more opportunities all around us in the process.  A timeless classic. 3.  Quindlen, Anna.  A Short Guide to a Happy Life.  What does it take to really live deeply and successfully, rather than to just exist?  This little book puts in perspective those things we often consider to be too important. 4.  Schwartz, David.  The Magic of Thinking Big.  Workable methods for thinking big.  How to create your own “good luck.”  The book that put coach Lou Holtz on the road to extraordinary success. 5.  Carnegie, Dale.  How to Win Friends & Influence People.  This is the classic little book on creating great relationships and building trust with others.   6.  Ziglar, Zig.  See You at the Top.  This book is full of easy to understand principles for any age.  We used it as a text book for homeschooling our children.   7.  Hill, Napoleon.  Think and Grow Rich.  I'm sure you've heard of this one.  The principles are as true today as they were in 1937.  I value this book so much I have an original copy.   8.  Lapin, Rabbi Daniel.  Thou Shall Prosper.  Nothing has shaped my thinking on a healthy Biblical perspective on money as much as this book.   9.  Conwell, Russell.  Acres of Diamonds.  I love this little story about discovering that the opportunities for our greatest success are often right under our nose.  Get a digital version here FREE when you sign up for Dan's weekly inspiration and tips on finding or creating work you love. 10.  Canfield, Jack.  The Success Principles.  An incredible compilation of 64 success principles from the co-author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. Dan & Joanne's Decision Making Process: Joanne and I have used a concise process for all the years of our marriage. When confronted with a decision, we allow a 2-week maximum for arriving at a decision. Whether it is where to move, what kind of car to purchase, making a career or business decision, or how to handle a difficult relationship with a relative, we approach the process as follows: 1. State the problem. 2. Get the advice and opinions of others. 3. List the alternatives. 4. Choose the best alternative. 5. Act. And we avoid the crippling power of indecision. Yes, this process must be bathed in prayer. But a daily walk of integrity and character should provide confidence in moving ahead quickly with most any decision. You, too, can deal effectively with the challenge of making solid decisions. Don't be indecisive and unstable in all your ways. Rather, walk in the strength, confidence, and boldness that come from decisive action. Episode #591 December 22, 2017 – We have a variety of questions, success stories and helpful resources that will help you find or develop passion in your work and your life — from the 17-year-old looking to take college classes outside her primary interests to the 49-year-old still searching to define his talents, skills and interest and the millennials in between who are looking for ways to pay student loans. Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you're listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show. Questions: I took your advice and was able to leave my job in 12 months. Should our 17-yr-old daughter take college classes outside her primary interests? With a salary of around $40,000 a year I feel completely stuck, and like the only way out is homelessness.  (Tom Peters – the most important business advice you'll ever hear.) Emily shares free college and career guides I have no clearly identifiable talents or skills.  No clear purpose or strong interest in any one area. Plus good news and more. Broadening Your Horizons 15:50 – The father of a 17-year-old who is being homeschooled asked Dan if he should encourage his daughter to take entrepreneurial classes and those not necessarily connected to her interests. Dan's advice:  Broaden your horizons before you narrow too quickly. Most noteworthy remember that you shouldn't go to college just  to have a piece of paper so someone will give you a job. College and Debt 19:30 – Dan has gotten a lot of response from the man who had a master's degree and lives in a homeless shelter. The most recent from a man making $40,000/year and working side jobs but can't pay off his college debt and is sleeping on his parent's couch. He says: “going to college set me up for failure. I should have self-taught myself.” 26:45 – Dan recommendation: find a creative way to generate income. He shares some success stories of folks in the 48 Days Community who have created a side business, including a retired pastor and his wife who are selling shoes on Amazon and generated $200,000 in profit. Developing Passion 42:03 – Dan shares a heartbreaking story from a man who has been looking for work he loves since 2003, having had 11 jobs and 3 professional licenses. As a result, he feels like a misfit in the marketplace. He says he has no clearly identifiable talents or skills and no clear purpose or strong interest in any one area. Dan's recommendations: [spp-tweet tweet=”Hoping and praying are not enough. You have to have a clear plan of action.”] [spp-tweet tweet=”Passion is not something that just shows up. It's something that can be developed. Decide to do something.
