This episode features Hedley & Bennett founder and CEO Ellen Bennett. When Ellen was working as a chef in restaurants, she couldn’t believe bad the aprons were. They were ill-fitting, poorly constructed, and everyone hated wearing them. So she decided to reinvent them. Now, thousands of chefs and makers wear her handcrafted aprons. To Ellen, a well-made apron can change the way you look and feel while you work. If you have questions for us, you can DM Alli on Instagram (@alliwebb), or email us your questions at RTB@wondery.com. A listener writes: “I have a near hatred towards people that talk about enjoying their lives and their work. Work seems to be a burden for the whole lot of us. Nothing that has purpose makes a profit, and nothing that makes a profit has purpose. If there are any exceptions to that, I would like to know. To make money, you have to do something meaningless at best. Am I missing something?” In this episode Dan unpacks these very common questions. Episode #624 August 10, 2018 Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you're listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable. This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die. Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show. Questions: 1. I have a near hatred towards people that talk about enjoying their lives and their work 2. Work seems to be a burden for the whole lot of us, with the only driving hope being the idea of more money “one day”. 3. Nothing that has purpose makes a profit, and nothing that makes a profit has purpose. 4. To make money, you have to do something meaningless at best. Quotation: “To each there comes in their lifetime a special moment when they are figuratively tapped on the shoulder and offered the chance to do a very special thing, unique to them and fitted to their talents. What a tragedy if that moment finds them unprepared or unqualified for that which could have been their finest hour.” ― Winston S. Churchill Call to Action – What are you doing now that blends passion, talent and money? Notes: Dan shares a Bible passage from Ecclesiastes 2:17-23 that is eerily similar to this listener's question. As Dan found out more about this listener, he is 42, married with two kids, a strong Christian and does high-end residential remodeling and construction. Dan shares the trifecta of Vocation, Career and Job. Vocation is the largest component and the element you want to identify first. It is what you want to accomplish. Career is a subset of vocation and job is the smallest component. Dan shares an example of his cousin who is very successful in the construction industry and has been able to use that as the fuel for his passion and purpose of flying supplies to Haiti. He also shares his own experiences as a used car salesman and how he found purpose and passion in that work. Dan shares his own purpose statement and some of the ways he aligns that to his passion. For example, creating a library of books about finding work you love for a welfare to work organization in Kansas City. The story of Steve Askinosie, a criminal defense attorney who found his passion by visiting local hospitals. Find his book: Meaningful Work here. Questions to ask yourself to discover your passion (from Wisdom Meets Passion). The Three Legged Stool: Passion, Talent and Money. Your sweet spot is where those three things come together. Dan shares a recent example of a client who lost his job and shared with him his love of golf clubs. He's now exploring expanding his “side job” of buying and selling golf clubs into a job he loves. This episode features celebrity chef Johnny Ray Zone, the founder and operator of Howlin’ Rays, a Nashville-style hot chicken restaurant in Los Angeles. Howlin’ Rays is so popular, Johnny’s main problem early on was dealing with long lines (seriously, it was hours.) We learned that Nashville hot chicken was invented as a revenge plot, about Johnny’s storied past as a chef and LA’s top restaurants and why he doesn’t want to expand so stop asking! After that, we answered a listener question and told you what we’re obsessed with lately. Kym Campbell is the creator of the free 30 Day PCOS Diet Challenge and The Beat PCOS 10 Week Program where she seeks to help women overcome their PCOS diagnosis by applying evidence-based approaches to food, exercise, and emotional wellness practices. After having struggled with health issues since her early teens, it wasn’t until her 30’s when she began struggling with infertility that Kym was diagnosed with PCOS. After a long journey of completely transforming her health through diet and lifestyle changes, Kym fell pregnant naturally after years of failed IVF treatments. When not busy supporting women with PCOS, Kym’s other passions include writing and recording music, surfing, and spending quality time with her husband and her 10-month-old son. PCOS stands for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. It is much more common than you might think and many women go undiagnosed despite their symptoms of irregular periods, unexplained weight gain, hormonal imbalances and more. One of the great things about a PCOS diagnosis is that it is often very treatable through lifestyle changes, rather than long-term medications (that come with lots of side effects). Kym talks in depth about symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. It is very likely that someone close to you struggles with PCOS – perhaps undiagnosed. For those who go undiagnosed, there is often a tremendous amount of shame around their symptoms and their bodies that seem like they are failing them at times. If you think this episode might be helpful to a friend or family member, please share it with them. With many people heading into that time of year when gathering with family becomes a "thing," we figured it was a great time to invite our old friend, everyone's cousin and New York Times bestselling author, A.J. Jacobs, to share a very special guest riff about what family really is...and isn't. He's spent the last few years deep-diving into the topic and has come up with some fascinating and fun discoveries, which he shares in his new book, It's All Relative.Good Life Science: Ever notice that the older we get, the more we tend to forget stuff? Turns out, the hippocampus - a part of our brain heavily involved in memory - starts to shrink in our middle years, taking memories with it. In our Good Life Science segment today, we're diving into some fascinating new research on how one very specific type of exercise affects can not only stop the shrinkage, but even reverse this process.
