Greetings Recapsters! For this episode, we discuss Gretchin Rubin's book, The Four Tendencies, where she discusses how people respond to inner (stop nagging) and outer (traffic laws) expectations. She also wrote Better than Before to help us discover why some people can form habits more easily than others. How do we change? Habits are the invisible architecture of our lives. 40% of our daily behaviors are repeated, why not harness this information to gain self-knowledge that will help us adopt habits successfully? 41% of the population are Obligers. “You can count on me and I'm counting on you to count on me.” They are motivated by external expectations and struggle with inner expectations and with saying no. 24% of the people fall into the Questioner category. “I will comply if you convince me why.” They are motivated by clarity, reason, logic and fairness. They can have bouts of analysis paralysis. 19% of folks are Upholders. These are the people that respond readily to inner and outer expectations. Discipline is their freedom. 17% fall into the Rebel category. “You can't make me, and neither can I.” This group places a high value on authenticity and acts best when you give them the information and let them make a choice. Our tendencies color the way we see the world. If you want to take the short quiz to discover your tendency click here. On this podcast I will talk about Reflecting on the Past and Setting Intentions for the Future. Identifying what is not working in our lives and creating goals to make changes can be really helpful. I will provide tips and strategies to help you be successful in keeping and attaining the goals you set for yourself. I'll talk about a tool that can help you to assess where your life is out of balance. That's the The Balance Bound Planner. This planner has sections for: work, home, others and self. I will tell you what I discovered about myself in just a few days of using this planner. If you would like to get a Balance Bound Planner, find one at https://www.balancebound.co/shop/stationery-giftsThe Balance Bound planner has a spot where you can come up with a word for the year. I'll share what mine is and how I built my intention for the year around it. One of the strategies I will talk about comes from understanding how you best meet inner and outer expectations in your life. To better understand this you can read Gretchin Rubin's book, “The Four Tendencies,” or take the quiz to find out what tendency you are: https://gretchenrubin.com/quiz/the-four-tendencies-quiz/https://www.amazon.com/The-Four-Tendencies-audiobook/dp/B071L426J6/ref=sr_1_1?crid=229PGX3X808O8&keywords=the+four+tendencies+by+gretchen+rubin&qid=1672626012&sprefix=the+four+ten%2Caps%2C192&sr=8-1No matter what goals you set for yourself, I will invite you to to aim for progress, not perfection. Remember to have compassion for yourself if it's harder to achieve the goals you set than you had hoped. This is a journey and we are most likely not going to hit the destination of having everything perfectly perfect (bummer!) We are often moving towards balance but so rarely do we stay there for long. In our Drop of Zen today (our short guided meditation) we will do a little reflecting on the past year and intention setting for the new year. Feel free to have a piece of paper and a writing utensil nearby to jot down what comes up for you. . If you like this episode please subscribe! Mindful Weight Loss with Michelle Tubman, MD

We always talk about the fact that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to weight loss. This is primarily because every body has different needs when it comes to nutrition and movement. But another important reason is that every mind approaches goals in its own unique way. So in this episode we are diving into Gretchin Rubin's Four Tendencies - Upholder, Obliger, Questioner and Rebel - and exploring how you can use your primary tendency to your advantage on your weight loss journey. To determine your tendency, head on over to Gretchin's website and take her quiz: https://gretchenrubin.com/quiz/the-four-tendencies-quiz/ No matter what tendency you are, coaching can help. Show Notes: Episode 3: How Courage Can Change Your Life, May 6, 2020  Today we are going to talk about how courage can not only change your life, but give you the control that you need to get you where you want to go. We are living in some really challenging times. This global pandemic has caused so many people to shift their lives in ways they never imagined. For many people it has affected their mental health and ability to cope with everyday tasks. Let's start off my identifying what Courage is? According to the dictionary, courage is defined as the ability to do something that frightens one. strength in the face of pain or grief Basically is doing something bravely or just the act of being brave. We all have this inside and we need to find it! This is also about control. Having control over things during a challenging time or period can be difficult. When you don't have control, you need to use courage to help you FEEL like you are in control. Gretchin Rubin said it best, “Act the way you want to feel.” This is gold you guys! We have to look for ways to process our feelings We have to take care ourselves Take care of our family and those around us Why is Courage so Important? We don't give ourselves the permission to act bravely. Often we only have control of our feelings and our mindset. When you give yourself courage, you can change the mindset. Often choosing comfort is the easy way out of choosing courage. You get in the mindset that negates your efforts to move you ahead. CHOSE Courage over Comfort and you will seek yourself grow. One of my favorite quotes is by Brené Brown, “Courage has a ripple effect. Every time we choose courage, we make sure everyone around us is a little better and the world is a litter braver.” I AM SO HERE FOR THIS!!! You have the ability to be brave You have the ability to challenge yourself Key Takeaways Be nice to yourself- Most Important Be loving, compassionate, cooperative, and kind Connect with 1 person each day for 1 week and ask them- How are they doing? With Courage find Joy: look for things that make you happy, find an activity you can do that puts you at ease (music, meditation, working out, cooking, etc) Connect with people: We are humans! We are meant to connect and have emotions! Also May is National Mental Awareness Month, if you or someone you know suffers from mental health please check-in and let them know you are here for them. Feeling Burned Out? How We Can Use Healthy Treats to Take Care of Ourselves

Does anyone else out there find yourself reaching for an entire box of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (insert your kryptonite here) when you are feeling the big feelings that most of us are experiencing on a daily basis? During times of high emotions, boredom, and overwhelm, we have found ourselves grasping for something to hold on to. In this time, we have found that Gretchin Rubin’s strategy of using healthy treats to care for ourselves has been truly a life saver. Most of us love the idea of good habits in our lives. In her book, Better Than Before, Rubin describes a strategy of using healthy treats to care for ourselves, which actually increases our ability of keep good habits in our lives. When we deprive ourselves of things that we look forward to and bring us pleasure, we can end up feeling depleted and burned out. This often leads us to abandon our good habit pursuits and can lead us to un-healthy treats or numbing (which can bring us pleasure momentarily, but often derail our long term goals and habits). Healthy treats are so wonderful because they are things that both make you feel good in the moment, and feel good after you are finished with them. On the other hand, unhealthy treats are enjoyable in the moment you indulge in them, but often make us feel worse later (think eating an entire chocolate cake to escape feeling a negative emotion, skipping your workout to mindlessly scroll YouTube, over drinking, or any addictive behavior that you feel sabotages your wellbeing). In this episode, we discuss how to really use the strategy of healthy treats as a fun way to give more to yourself, which in turn allows you to actually stick with your goals and habits. We give our lists of healthy treats so that hopefully you leave the episode with a long list of your own healthy treats you can lean on throughout the day to help you feel both taken care of and motivated. It is amazing to look back on the progress that they have made as they make the big move to Secondary schools.   On a recent Erasmus trip to Stockholm I had the opportunity to dip into: "The Happiness Project by Gretchin Rubin",  as part of her starting point she identified 12 guiding principles and then applied them as a template to becoming happier in her whole life. One of the main starting points was de-cluttering her home to produce a freer more relaxed environment for herself and her family to live in.  So I'm applying this to both my work and home life with a view to clearing out the messy and untidy clutter and alongside this attempt to get better habits around my own physical and mental approach to life, so alongside the de-cluttering the physical home/work environment I wanted to aim for better life balance. Why I Write

Nicole Blades sat down to take her LSATs and realized that practicing law was not how she wanted to spend the rest of her life. She has been putting words to paper since a child and an English teacher encourage her to pursue this career. All of those moments, combined with a conversation between her and a makeup artist on the set of a horrible talk show made her realize that journalism was the perfect way to be a writer as a career. As with most writers, her career path was not a straight line. She has worked at Essence Magazine, ESPN and Women’s Health. She also has an ongoing successful freelance writing career. Her latest novel, The Thunder Beneath Us, is now on bookstore shelves and we had a great conversation about the cover and wondering how and if it might change when the book hits International markets. Listen in as we discuss literature censorship, the role of race in writing and her desire for more “reflective writing instead of diverse writing.” An idea that opened my mind in multiple new directions and one that I think will do the same to you. Nicole and I both believe that we need stories and art more than ever. A few links referenced in the show that you’ll want to be sure to visit once you are done listening.
