My guest this week is mixing and mastering engineer Nick Squids Squillante, who's recent immersive mixes include “Rescue Me” by Dirty Heads, which went to Number 1 on the Billboard Alternative charts, and “Psycho” by Asking Alexandria, which also scored a spot at Number 1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts. He's also done other immersive mixes for artists such as Tommy Lee, Papa Roach and Bad Wolves to name a few. Nick began his career working at Electric Lady Studios with 7-time Grammy-award-winning mixer Michael Brauer. During his time at the studio, Nick worked on records for Bon Jovi, Frank Ocean, Mumford & Sons, and Elle King, to name a few. Since then, Nick has been working with both major label and independent artists, amassing millions of streams on Spotify, Apple Music, and other major platforms. As a result, Nick has worked on records that have charted in the top 10 on iTunes and even more recently was considered for Grammy nomination. During the interview we spoke about his biggest learning moment with the great Michael Brauer, his favorite plugins, how he got into immersive mixing, creating memorable moments in a mix, and much more. I spoke with Nick from his studio in Brooklyn.  On the intro I looked at how social media doesn't monetize fans, and the new huge optical storage format. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epId: 97068155, backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };

The sleep economy is booming – from hi-tech sleep trackers to apps and cooling mattresses – and its worth is estimated at hundreds of billions of US dollars every year. So why do some of us still have trouble dropping off? Part of the explanation may lie in our sex, as some studies suggest that women are 40 per cent more likely to experience sleep disruption than men. And throughout a woman's life, puberty, pregnancy, menopause and caring responsibilities may all have an effect on the amount of good quality sleep available to women. Kim Chakanetsa is joined by psychologist Dr Christine Blume from the Centre for Chronobiology at the University of Basel in Switzerland. Since April 2022 she has been involved in a four-year project to study the effects of natural daylight and exercise on our circadian rhythms. Dr Anita Shelgikar is clinical professor of neurology and programme director for the Sleep Medicine Fellowship at the University of Michigan in the United States. She researches a condition called obstructive sleep apnea, where a person's airway narrows during sleep and can cause them to wake repeatedly. This can affect pregnant women in particular. "Sonically good without the sonic soul is crap!" Michael talked about why it's the emotional stuff, not the technical stuff that makes a great mix, how to understand multi-bus mix compression, why plugins are fun, and mixing in Atmos on headphones. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Michael Brauer a Grammy-winning New York mix engineer. His many credits include "Best Pop Vocal Album" for John Mayer's Continuum, "Best Alternative Album" for Coldplay's Parachutes, and also "Best Rock Album" for Coldplay's "Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends". Other artists include The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Jeff Buckley, David Byrne, Paul McCartney, Ben Folds, KT Tunstall, and Martha Wainwright. He also invented the technique known as 'Brauerizing', in which mixes are routed through multiple compressors and busses to create a blended sound. And he is a co-founder of Mix With The Masters which has been running for over a decade.  Michael has been a guest on the show previously to talk about his background in music and mixing so please chack out that episode at RSR300. And at that time he had relocated outside the heart of the city in NY to settle into his home studio for mixing. He also completed his journey of migrating his mix template over from a hybrid setup to a full “in the box” method with the help of his engineer Fernando Reyes. Michael created a fantastic course on Puremix.net called Brauerize ITB to teach his mixing setup so you can recreate the whole thing in your home studio if you choose.  So I am excited to have Michael joining us to talk about his philosophy of mixing and the migration over to mixing “in the box”. This show is being brought to you by www.gubbarum.com Kelsie Kimberlin is a 22-year-old American musician and singer. Her work is not only accessible and entertaining but also steeped with important social themes and dual meanings underscoring her deep understanding of the power of creative music to evoke change. From an early age, Kelsie immersed herself in music, singing in choirs, participating in Yoko Ono's Peace Project, and spending much of her childhood in music studios working on an endless stream of original songs. She participates in every aspect of her art -- writing, recording, performing, and filming her videos. “Right now, the world is going through cataclysmic and historic changes that are affecting every person on the planet. How we respond to them will determine the fate of life on earth for future generations. I want to use my music to shine light on some of these issues and give people hope that together we can unite in our humanity for the common good." Multi-Grammy winner Michael Brauer, who has been working with Kelsie since January, recently said, "I really enjoy mixing Kelsie's music! Her voice is beautiful, emotional and I believe the story she's singing about. The musicianship and productions are amazing too. I expect her to go all the way, she's the real deal." When COVID hit, famed music legend Danny Goldberg urged Kelsie to start releasing her music during the pandemic, and, following the release of “Masterpiece,” sent her an autographed copy of his new book, “Serving the Servant,” about his relationship with Kurt Cobain, congratulating her for her incredible work.

Ep. 045: Matthew Rifino - Sound Mixer, TODAY Show

Beyond the Spotlight

Play Episode Play 54 sec Highlight Listen Later Jul 1, 2021 39:01

When Matthew Rifino picked up an acoustic guitar at 5, a 30 year love affair with music began. 3 years later, he convinced his grandfather to buy him a four-track cassette recorder and Matthew would sit for hours recording and overdubbing. He started recording his first band at their first rehearsal and honed his basic recording chops by trial and error. Matthew and his friends threw themselves into the NJ Hardcore and Punk scene of the mid 90's. Forming an indie label and throwing shows, Matthew wanted to be immersed in the music community. Channel surfing after school, Matthew stumbled upon a show being filmed at a recording studio only one town over from his house! He showed up at their door and told them he wanted to learn how to record. Matthew lucked out and the owner Tee DiMura took him under his wing. It was an old school 16 track analog 70's studio with floor to ceiling shag carpet and the smell of cigarettes in the air. Matthew spent all four years of high school afternoons learning as much as he could about recording and mixing. It was Avatar Studios (The Power Station) that gave Matthew his first real taste of what it's like working with big names in the music industry. At 19-years-old, he scored a 3 month unpaid internship that turned into 4 years on staff at this legendary facility.  Everyday, Matthew was in awe while learning from Grammy winning engineers and producers. Al Schmidt, Jack Joseph Puig, Michael Brauer, Jason Corsaro, Neil Dorfsman, and Rich Costey were some the greats he got to watch perform their craft. The years he spent at Avatar still influenced the rest of his life.After 4 years, he wanted to make the move to freelance. Matthew had a couple of indie records lined up and then by a chance meeting he got a gig mixing monitors for the NBC Today Show. He had never mixed anything live before but got thrown right into the fire on his first show mixing Elvis Costello. At the same time with an inherent gravitational pull towards his recording studio roots he signed on as a staff engineer at Granite Alps Studios in NJ and later as Chief Engineer at Fenix Studios in Staten Island, NY. During that time, Matthew worked with Living Colour, James Blood Ulmer, Bernard Purdie (Steely Dan, Aretha Franklin, Hall and Oates), Wu Tang Clan, Wyclef Jean plus lots of independent rock and pop artists. While at Fenix, he also had the opportunity to mix jingles for television, radio, as well as tracks that would end up in major motion pictures.At just 27, Matthew took on the role of Broadcast Music Mixer for the NBC TODAY SHOW. Mixing the 5.1 Surround Sound on air-mixes that millions watch daily along with millions of streams on the net. During his time at NBC, Matthew has worked with a cornucopia of artists such as Adele, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Dave Matthews Band, Robert Plant, Fleetwood Mac, Lady Gaga, Sting, Aretha Franklin, Taylor Swift, John Mellencamp, among many others.After a few years away from the record business to focus on television, he could not resist the urge to get back into the studio. Having recently completed his personal mix room "Stone House Studios”, Matthew has started mixing records again. His goal is to be able to deliver high quality mixes to all his clients.Guest Links:https://www.mattrifinomusicmixer.com/https://www.instagram.com/rifinomatthew/Support the show (https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=9JCBNUCRNRVKY&source=url)

LOTL The Quiet Storm Welcomes The System . Debut There New CD " SYSTEM OVERLOAD " In 1982, a record dropped which changed the way people experienced music. "You Are In My System" was: electronic and sexy, atonal and melodic, rocked out and deep. At a time when midi-driven "musicians" were at odds with "real" musicians. Mic Murphy and David Frank - The System gracefully fused the two and created a uniquely different harmonic experience. Their second album, Xperiment mixed by Michael Brauer yielded the top 10 R&B hit, "Promises Can Break" and an inclusion in the film "Beat Street" - "Baptize The Beat". Their third album yielded two additional chart-toppers, "The Pleasure Seeker" and "This Is For You". However, it was the 1987 release of "Don't Disturb This Groove" which established The System as one of the most innovative and copied artists of the decade. This beat ballad, marked by Mic's achingly desperate lead and Dave's dizzying mix of electronic soul, was the very definition of crossover, topping both Pop and R&B charts for several weeks while the album itself, DON"T DISTURB THIS GROOVE, made it onto scores of year-end Top 10 lists. These two members went on to work with a who's who of artists Chaka Khan, Phil Collins, Robert Palmer, Stevie Winwood, Madonna, Ashford and Simpson, Mick Jagger, Scritti Politti, Christina Aguilera to name but a few. They also contributed the Theme to Eddie Murphy 's "Coming To America" and "Beverly Hills Cop's" "Rock and Roll Me Again".
