C'mon, y'all know you've done some strange and laughable things while being brain injured. Maybe it was funny at the time, maybe it's taken years to laugh, or maybe you still can't. Finding the humor in all the heart-(ahem, brain)-ache makes those hard days just a little easier. After Mimi Hayes suffered a brain hemorrhage from a ruptured cavernous malformation, she did just that. Taking her experiences on the road, she has made a career as a comedian. Nothing makes her feel better than having people laugh with her.  Join us for some chuckles today with Mimi Hayes, making brain hemorrhages look cool since 1992!  In this episode: Mimi's Survivor Story: brain hemorrhage due to a ruptured cavernous angioma in the cerebellum Symptoms of fatigue, loss of balance, didn't know where she was in space, visual disturbances, migraines, couldn't move head or eyes without vomiting  Symptoms mistakenly categorized as psychological!!! Took a couple weeks to get an MRI--Mama Bear to the rescue! The bleed happened at a stressful time in Mimi's life.  She thinks the added stress contributed to bursting her previously benign cavernous angioma (a clump of vessels that never unfurled correctly at birth)  Initial treatment was at home: watch, wait, and hope for reabsorption. Mimi started losing physical function, coordination, double vision and vision loss, loss of taste, weight loss.  With the increase in symptoms, her neurosurgeon reassessed and now Mimi needed brain surgery Recovery from brain surgery:  Post-anesthesia hilarity: Sit Down Helen!  ICU Rehab Hospital: coming to grips with changed abilities.  Aggressive therapy soon after surgery led to quick physical results.  If you didn't get this it doesn't mean it's too late! Outpatient therapy Back to work in 5 months with accommodations and self regulation Recovery is nuanced.  Everybody's recovery timeline is different.  The intensity of your injury doesn't mean a certain timeline, i.e. “mild” injury doesn't mean quick recovery and visa versa After about two years of teaching post injury, Mimi started some new creative pursuits: book writing and comedy.   Humor in tragedy, the importance of finding laughs through hard times Finding new purpose after brain injury Teaching after brain injury no longer felt like her purpose.  She opened herself up to new possibilities.  She hit the eject button and moved to NYC. Be open to new possibilities Jump into the void Book deal: https://amzn.to/2QW0n2I (I'll be OK, It's Just a Hole in my Head) by Mimi Hayes Brain Injury circuit: TV spots, comedy gigs with sets on brain injury, Brain Injury Association presentations Step into yourself after injury: you have a new perspective, changed spirituality, changes in life.  Get into those changes. It's a great time to reinvent yourself (48:12) Being an advocate in the brain injury community helps you care that much more about doing the work, It becomes bigger than you.  You are helping others.   Being a part of the brain injury community throughout the years: A support for you and others! Brain injury is always going to be a part of your story Owning your story and deficits showcases what is possible after brain injury How can you reframe your deficits as a special super power?? Own it! (52:41) Everyone is trying to make their way and be happy and confident Take that step and figure it out as you go.  You don't have to be perfect; there's never a perfect time.  Take the plunge if you feel a pull. Some of us are ready to share and others are not at that point.  Be patient with yourself and reach out to the community if you are ready. Some may not be aware the community exists and when they do find it they may not know how to interact with it Figure out what platform works for you and be patient.   There's a full array of types of people, people in...

In this episode, Tawny sat down to chat with Mimi Hayes. Mimi Hayes is the author of "I'll Be OK, It's Just a Hole in My Head (A Memoir On Heartbreak and Head Trauma)." She’s also a comedian, podcaster, and brain hemorrhage survivor. Mimi talks about dumping her trauma on other humans during stand-up, a nurse with the most abrupt bedside manner in the world, having a field day with a bleeding brain, using humor to avoid reality, fighting for her life, and how friends and family change during trauma. “I have grown up with a permanent smile on my face. And then I had a brain hemorrhage. And I smiled some more. I smiled more because smiling makes you laugh. And when you laugh, you forget for a second that your brain is actually bleeding which makes absolutely no sense. Humor has always been and will always be my defense mechanism. I don't claim to know much, but I do know this: If you can survive a brain surgery with your sense of humor intact, it's a job well done.” - Mimi HayesLearn more about Mimi by visiting MimiHayes.com For more information about Death Is Hilarious checkout DeathIsHilarious.com. All episodes available at http://TheNeuroNerds.com. Follow @TheNeuroNerds on Twitter/Instagram and Like us at Facebook.com/TheNeuroNerds. Summary It's a Joe Solo episode! Today's show is hosted by Joe Borges and an occasional bark from his service dog, Stella. He's talking all about the challenges of recovering from a brain injury and how the journey, even with a support system and caregivers, can still feel lonely at times. It can be difficult for non-brain injury survivors to relate, but that's why Joe is working hard to create community of support through his blog JoeSoRocks.com and the YouSoRock Facebook group. He offers tips for coping and overall hope and motivation to keep persevering through your own brain injury recovery journey to not just survive, but thrive! Topics Discussed in this Episode Joe's mental deficits and PTSD and how his girlfriend helps with this as his caretaker and support system. She is very supportive, but he still feels lonely. He reflects on how his recovery journey has been one of the hardest times of his life, but also the best time of his life because he's becoming a better version of himself. The difficulty for non-brain injury survivors to understand. He and most brain injury survivors don't want people to feel bad or pity them. They just want empathy. That's why it's great to connect with fellow survivors because they really understand how it feels. Memory issues like how he used to be able to memorize lyrics really quickly and now it's a lot more challenging. Questioning yourself is hard like when Joe suffers from dissociative episodes as a result of his PTSD and he thinks he's reacting well, but finds out that he didn't. It can make you like you do not know yourself and make you question whether you can trust your own brain when recovering from brain injury. Joe reflects on having a great time at Coachella, but questions if he really did as well as he thinks. He wore earbuds the whole time to help block out noise to prevent overstimulation. It was nice having fellow stroke survivor, Rian, reach out to ask how he was coping after Coachella. Shares a story from comedian, Mimi Hayes who suffered a brain hemorrhage, about how she hides things from herself by accident. Joe also hid his Apple Watch from himself by accident. Discusses the frustration of their post-brain injury brains playing tricks on them. Joe doesn't want to just survive. He wants to thrive and live his best life. The more he gets better, the more he wants and that's why the mental deficits are exhausting emotionally and mentally. The importance of routine for brain injury recovery. Meditation helps Joe balance out especially through overwhelming experiences. Helps him focus and be more mindful. Discusses how multi-tasking is difficult for Joe now post stroke. Sometimes Joe and other survivors, may lash out on those closest to them when frustrated from deficits and how both sides cope. Its a long and lonely journey so Joe is very proud of his brain injury survivor community. The brain injury survivor community inspires Joe to keep going. Everyone sharing their stories helps to inspire and motivate each other. That's what YouSoRock spotlights on Joe's blog is all about. Summary With co-host Lauren Manzano, still traveling abroad, this week's episode features another guest co-host, Sleep Deez with host Joe Borges on-location at Coachella Music Festival. Sleep is a multi-platinum producer and just happens to also be the composer of The NeuroNerds podcast theme song so he is the perfect person to review the performances at the festival. Joe and Sleep discuss their favorite Coachella shows from Beyonce to Alt-J to Jorja Smith plus Sleep's personal experience with a family member battling a neurological disorder. They also explore how even through brain injuries and disorders, music can still often be remembered and its familiarity comforts and helps with the healing process. Mental deficits and affects of various brain injuries are also touched on as well as Joe's trick for battling overstimulation when in public, especially in crowded settings like Coachella. Topics Discussed in this Episode Joe and Sleeps highlight their favorite performances at Coachella including Beyonce, Alt-J, SZA, Jorja Smith, Belly and The Weeknd (this episode was recorded before the 3rd night so it doesn't include some of their additional favorite performances like Eminem and Ibeyi). Sleep's discography including The Black Eyed Peas, Selena Gomez, The Game and more. Sleep's grandmother has had Alzheimer's disease for the past 15 years and has trouble even remembering her family members, but music is so powerful that she still remembers her favorite songs. When Joe was in ICU right after he suffered his stroke, his friend Jon Licht sang Riptide to him in the hospital and Joe was able to recall the lyrics even though he was experiencing memory loss and left side neglect due to his stroke. Music connects people from many different demographics. The discuss how the mind can play tricks on you when you have a brain injury like when Sleep's friend had an accident, mixed up words; Joe's fellow brain injury survivor, Mimi Hayes accidentally hid stuff from herself; Joe suffers from dissociative episodes and hand tremors; some brain injury survivors forget how to see and swallow, left side neglect and clumsiness How Joe's Beats headphones help him cope with overstimulation in crowded, public places like Coachella. Eat healthy - cheating now and then is ok. It's all about balance. Don't do drugs. Drugs like cocaine and heroine can cause a stroke.
