TRADITION's subscribers have already received our special Spring 2025 issue, containing content commemorating R. Aharon Lichtenstein zt”l, timed with his 10th yahrzeit marked this month. Five years ago we were pleased to publish Rabbanit Tonya Mittelman's essay, “Women in the Torah World in the Thought of Rabbi Lichtenstein” (Summer 2020). Toni, a distinguished educator, is a daughter of R. Lichtenstein. In this episode of our podcast, Mali Brofsky talks with Mittelman, who shares insights from her father’s career, as well as her own experiences as an educator, regarding women’s participation in high-level Jewish learning and religious practice. She emphasizes that her father's endorsement of women's learning was rooted in his deep trust in both Torah and in women, explaining that he believed women and men have similar spiritual needs in this regard. The conversation explores the challenges and opportunities in providing comprehensive Jewish education for women, as well as their practice of mitzvot, with Toni emphasizing that her biggest challenge as an educator is transforming her students from passive to active participants in halakhic education and practice. Regarding religious practice, Mittelman notes that women should maximize participation wherever possible. On the question of the frustration often experienced by women in these areas, she asserts that there remains a difference between men and women in some religious contexts, that this reality should be openly discussed, and that women should trust the system, pointing out that these challenges are part of a broader set of life demands experienced by men and women alike. The discussion concludes by encouraging further progress in women’s religious participation while acknowledging the ongoing tensions within the traditional religious framework. Watch a video recording of the conversation. Tonya Mittelman is the Principal of Ulpanat Tzvia Sdot Negev. Mali Brofsky, a member of TRADITION's editorial board, is a senior faculty member at MMY and a social worker in private practice. The post R. Today's Topics: 1) Gospel - John 8:31-42 - Jesus said to those Jews who believed in Him, "If you remain in My word, you will truly be My disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." They answered Him, "We are descendants of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How can You say, 'You will become free'?" Jesus answered them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. A slave does not remain in a household forever, but a son always remains. So if the Son frees you, then you will truly be free. I know that you are descendants of Abraham. But you are trying to kill Me, because My word has no room among you. I tell you what I have seen in the Father's presence; then do what you have heard from the Father." They answered and said to Him, "Our father is Abraham." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the works of Abraham. But now you are trying to kill Me, a Man Who has told you the truth that I heard from God; Abraham did not do this. You are doing the works of your father!" So they said to Him, "We were not born of fornication. We have one Father, God." Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I came from God and am here; I did not come on mMy own, but He sent Me." Esther, the Spies & Faith

In this episode of the TRADITION Podcast, Mali Brofsky and Mark Smilowitz discuss the central thesis of his recent essay, “Esther and the Spies: A Bible-Based Symbolic Meaning of Walled Cities from the Time of Joshua” which appeared in our Fall 2024 issue and is now open access at TraditonOnline.org. Smilowitz explains how, through an analysis of the textual connection between the walled cities in the time of Joshua and those in the Purim story, he has uncovered a message about how the Jewish nation is enjoined to move from fear to courage through our connection to faith during times of crisis. The two discuss the importance of reading halakhic and traditional texts with an eye toward understanding their deeper philosophical, theological, and ethical messages, and also consider the significance of Smilowitz's message regarding faith and meaning, how we see this experience reflected in our own time, and how it can serve as a source of support during the great challenges facing us today. Mali Brofsky, MSW, a member of TRADITION's editorial board, is a senior faculty member at MMY and a social worker in private practice; Rabbi Mark Smilowitz, a veteran educator in Israel and the United States, recently completed a doctorate on the thought of Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik at Hebrew University. Read “Esther and the Spies” at TraditionOnline.org. Halakha mandates a separate date for Purim for cities that had walls during the era of Joshua. Commentators have been puzzled by the selection of the era of Joshua in particular, as opposed to other, more obvious choices (such as the period of the Purim story itself). The Talmud points to a source which seems to rely on a mere technicality without providing a satisfying thematic connection between Joshua and Esther. Smilowitz's essay probes the broader context of source through an exploration of the early chapters of Deuteronomy alongside the story of the sin of the spies in order to demonstrate a thematic parallel between the development of the faith of Esther and the development of the faith of the Jewish people over time, from the sin of the spies through the conquering of walled cities in Canaan under Joshua's leadership. The article argues that the halakha about walled cities in the time of Joshua is meant to point to this particular message about the dynamism of faith as illustrated by those two stories. Watch a video recording of the conversation.

Another mind bending podcast. The day David Lynch passed, I felt like I heard him say "So why didn't you interview me?"  I kind of chuckled to myself - thinking, "Of people I know, who knew David that well?"  I haven't seen all his films - just a few, so I missed the many Harry Dean Stanton appearances. As fans of the podcast know, I knew Harry Dean, played guitar with him, he was close friends with Luana Anders (who passed in 1996) and when Harry Dean passed, we interviewed him.  He has shown up a number of times, also with Billy Paxton, whom I started me career with, and with whom Billy and Harry worked on "Big Love" together. So "any friend of Harry's is a friend of mine" - in terms of how we are able to communicate with people offstage.  In this instance, I started to ask Jennifer if David had been the person I heard saying "Why didn't you interview me?" and before I could ask it - she said "He is." It's on camera. I thought it, started to speak; she answered it. That's how this works. Jennifer and I have been doing this together for ten years - every week, if one can imagine. And this time, all this past week I've been hearing "messages" from Mr. Lynch. Some examples; my son suggested we go and see "Inland Empire" at the Egyptian.  Two people in the audience told me afterwards that they saw him "sitting off to the side" - exactly where he says he was, in the last ten minutes of the film. It's when Laura Dern's character merges with her "old self" in the film.  A bright light appears as they embrace.  That's when these two said they saw him in the theater. It's not my opinion they saw him - it's not my belief they saw him - I asked, and he said that "indeed, he was there at the theater, and that he was surprised more people didn't realize it." David was an early proponent of Transcendental Meditation - something he learned from Maharishis Mahesh Yogi - the same fellow from Rishikesh that the Beatles went to visit. In one of his interviews (that I watched this week after hearing from him) he said that he had met MMY and learned TM from him. And since then he would meditate twice a day. As he said in an interview, "once in the morning" and once during the lunch hour. Also, I learned that he went to Bob's Big Boy in Burbank (a fan favorite for my family) and every day at 2:30 would have a "malted and a cup of coffee."  Sometimes he'd add fries. So we went to Bob's and saw the huge display of memorabilia people have deposited in his honor - as well as saw there was an hour wait to sit at the counter. So we moseyed on down to Paty's - where we were able to sit at the counter and get our milkshakes, coffee and fries. We sat next to two David devotees - people who had met at Disneyland and become pals over David, and were doing the same thing we were doing. And we talked about David and we talked about this podcast... that I had yet to do. I told them to "tune in this week and we'll see if we can get him to come by."  So a shout out to Derek and Sharon who are fans of Mr. Lynch. It's an unusual event to be sure - people are spontaneously honoring him, not for any other reason than they were moved by him, or learned something from him. Also, Jennifer did not know David's work - as she notes in the podcast. So she didn't know - couldn't know - that David's nickname for Laura Dern was "tidbit" - his nickname for Naomi Watts was "buttercup" - nickname for Patricia Arquette was "Solid Gold" - his old pal Jack Fisk is married to Sissy Spacek, Isabella was the Oscar nominee - Ms. Rossellini - and his nickname for Kyle MacLachlan was "Kale" (because producer Dino de Laurentiis couldn't pronounce Kyle on "Dune") -I forgot to ask him if he'd seen Dino yet, but as he said "I've seen them all." He had a message for "Doug and Steve Martin" who directed his short promo for "Eraserhead"  and the Woody Woodpecker dolls... He mentioned talking to Dennis Hopper (Luana's pal) Dean Stockwell (whom I directed in the film LIMIT UP) and Bill Paxton (who I met while he was doing Aliens and we wrote a script together.) He had messages for Steven Spielberg and Mel Brooks - all pals of his, and for his family "I had the ride of my life and I can't wait to do it again!" - For those coming to this podcast for the first time, I recommend looking over the past three years of online podcasts, looking at the transcripts of the 7 years prior to that in the books TUNING INTO THE AFTERLIFE and BACKSTAGE PASS TO THE FLIPSIDE 1, 2 and 3.   Jennifer and I have been doing this weekly for ten years.  If one wants to book a session with Jennifer, find her at JenniferShaffer.com - and if one wants to book a meditation (visit to their council) with me, go to RichardMartini.com and follow the links.   But as David said; all you need is a shake, some fries and a coffee to talk to him.  Enjoy. He said something fun and

Sandy Dann speaks with the new interim Co-Chairs on the Yawuru board of directors, Johani Mamid and Debra Pigram Nyamba Buru Yawuru (NBY), the development and investment company of the Yawuru people, has announced a new board of directors. Yawuru community members had expressed concern that the NBY board was not aligned or effectively communicating with the Yawuru Prescribed Body Corporate board or that of its holding company Murra Mala Yawuru (MMY). Following a period of discussion and attempts to find a resolution it was determined that a new board at NBY was the best path forward. The new board is co-chaired by Debra Pigram and Johani Mamid who also serve on the PBC board. Deputy Chair Maxine Charlie is the outgoing Chair of MMY. Yawuru PBC Chair Benjamin Dolby said that the board was selected through a consultative approach between the PBC and MMY boards including cultural leaders. “We are extremely grateful to the diverse and experienced directors who have stood up to take on this new responsibility and look forward to continuing to work collaboratively with the NBY board for the benefit of all Yawuru people.” Yawuru remains committed to good governance, which saw the organisation receive a prestigious Indigenous Governance Award in 2018. The board will progress the recruitment and appointment of a new CEO for NBY. In the meantime, current Deputy CEO Cara Peek will serve as interim CEO. The Board, management and committed NBY team will continue to deliver on the Mabu Liyan framework which captures the economic, social and cultural objectives of Yawuru people – and are excited about the opportunities ahead. NBY will work constructively with its valued partners and stakeholders to fulfil these opportunities on behalf of the Yawuru community. New NBY Board: Co-Chairs Debra Pigram and Johani Mamid, Deputy Chair Maxine Charlie, Jasmyn Cook, Brendan Renkin and Lincoln North. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntRWOw_jNC0

This episode of the podcast is with Abdou Kattih and Sarah Alzabet with Murfreesboro Muslim Youth. This organization does a tremendous amount of outreach efforts and is passionate about making a positive impact on the community. They do community events like "Love Your Neighbor". There are quarterly meet ups where they have a potluck dinner that is open to anyone in the community. The whole mission is to bring people from different walks of life together to spend time with one another and learn about different cultures. Something we are definitely about here at Spread The Positive, finding that common ground and being accepting of people that don't believe the same things you do. Murfreesboro Muslim Youth is currently wrapping up a project they dedicated to the 50 victims of the New Zealand mass shooting that happened recently. It is called 50 for 50They are doing 50 acts of kindness for each person that lost their lives in the attack. From raising funds and resources for local nonprofits like "Murfreesboro Cold Patrol" to planting 50 trees along the greenway to honor the victims. This group of young people is being the change they want to see in the world. The numbers speak for themselves...over 2,500 hours of community service, 3,000+ meals served to people in need, 3,000+ schools supplies raised for students who need them, and much more. MMY is definitely a great example of "what is going right" in the world. Abdou and Sarah both have some really great insights on the typical STP topics. Very grateful for all they are doing to help the community here in Middle TN and beyond. Thank you for being on the podcast and all you do to Spread The Positive. Nasir and Matt discuss the legalities of surge pricing and how one company is flipping the script on surge pay. Full Podcast Transcript NASIR: All right. Welcome to our business legal podcast where we cover business in the news and add our legal twist to the show. Mmy name is Nasir Pasha. MATT: And I’m Matt Staub. NASIR: All right. Welcome. So, again, for the second time, I feel like I just should repeat myself after Groundhog Day a couple of days ago. We’re talking about surge pricing today. Unfortunately, we’re not focusing on Uber but I think we’ll have to talk about them, right? We get to talk about them, right? MATT: Yeah. I mean, they’re kind of the ones that put it in the spotlight – at least recently they have. We’ll talk about surge pricing and I think everyone knows pretty much what that is but, for those that don’t, we’ll use the Uber example really quick even though I know you don’t want to. They have a certain rate for when you want to take a car or want to take a ride somewhere. But, if the demand is really high, they bump up their prices and then your ride is whatever – a multiplier of 1.5 to et cetera. So, you pay more during peak times. That’s kind of the surge pricing model. Well, there’s this company, Zappos, which I believe is, are they shoes? NASIR: No, they do shoes but I think they do other apparel, too. MATT: They are testing out surge pay so it’s not surge pricing per se but it’s the same sort of concept and it’s dealing with their employees in their call centers. And so, I’m not sure of the exact arrangement they have and I think it’s still relatively new, too. But, essentially, they tried this open market pilot that they tested out and it gave every employee 10 percent flexible time so you’re not working the same exact hours every single day, every single week, and the thing with this is, like I said, it’s surge pay. So, if you’re working at a time when the demand in the call center of this customer service center is really high, they actually pay you more and, if you’re working in times where it’s not, you get paid less. It’s an interesting concept. Let’s say you’re on the East Coast and it’s early and a lot of people are calling in, especially because no one’s calling in on the West Coast, you know, it might not be as high a call time but, in the middle of the day, when both East Coast and West Coast people are calling in, the IRS is kind of a similar thing. When I call in to them, I’m realizing now that I structure my calls at a time when I think most Eastern Time zone and Central have all done for the day because that’s peak times. So, it’s an interesting concept, but I wanted to talk about the whole surge concept in general. NASIR: I think, in this case, it’s pretty neat in that the surge pricing aspect of things, people are somewhat uncomfortable with it – not only customers are uncomfortable with it but even cities and governments are uncomfortable with it too – because there are anti-gauging laws that are put into effect in certain circumstances and, if you think about it, when Uber implements them and these other companies that may do the same thing, they do it when supply may be low and demand may be very high. But, since the surge pricing for Uber and other companies, it’s done on an algorithm or done automatically based upon how many people are requesting a ride and how many rides are available, sometimes, it can have some – I don’t know if it’s attended or unattended but – results in the sense that, during a national tragedy or a storm, for example, surge pricing can go into effect. In just this last month, we’ve seen the same thing happen in France during the last terrorist attack though the surge prices were done taken away manually but they kicked in as soon as that happened. And then, also, with this last winter storm last week on the East Coast, that was also kicked in. But the difference is now, with East Coast specifically and I think in New York City specifically – in ...

Allogeneic stem cell transplantation has a well-defined indication in the treatment of hematological malignancies. The beneficial immune effect of allogeneic marrow transplantation has long been known, but only recently have methods been developed to separate the graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) effect from graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Animal experiments have shown that lymphocytes from the marrow donor can be transfused without causing severe GVHD if stable chimerism and tolerance is established. First clinical studies have been preformed in patients with recurrent chronic myelogenous leukemia. In these patients complete molecular remissions were induced that persist without further maintenance treatment. These results have been confirmed in larger multicenter studies in Europe and the USA. The best results were obtained in chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML); repeated successes have been reported in relapsing acute myeloid leukemia (AML), myelodysplastic syndromes and multiple myeloma (MMY), and rare responses were reported for acute lymphoid leukemia. Contrary to animal experiments GVHD has been observed in human patients although to a lesser extent than expected in transplants not given immunosuppression. Secondly myelosuppression has been observed in patients treated with relapsing CML. In CML the incidence of GVHD could be reduced by depleting CD8(+) T cells from the donor lymphocyte concentrate. Alternatively only small numbers of T lymphocytes can be transfused and in the case of failing responses, the numbers of donor lymphocytes may be increased. Results in recurrent AML have been improved by the use of low-dose cytosine arabinoside, granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor mobilized blood cells as compared to lymphocytes only. In MMY the response rate is higher than in AML, but the remissions are of limited duration in most patients. Several protocols have been designed to include preemptive donor lymphocyte transfusion in patients with a high relapse risk after transplantation. Problems remain to avoid chronic GVHD and to circumvent the immune escape mechanisms of leukemia. Copyright (C) 2003 S. Karger AG, Basel.
