An exciting innovation is transforming the fight against homelessness: 3D-printed homes. In Austin, Texas, ICON, a 3D-printing construction company, is building 100 homes for people facing chronic homelessness. Using its Vulcan 3D printer, ICON layers a cement-like material to create the structure, while human workers complete the finishing touches. This project is part of the Community First! Village, a development led by nonprofit Mobile Loaves & Fishes, which already houses over 390 people. With support from the Lennar Foundation, the expansion will accommodate 1,800 residents, including 100 3D-printed homes and 1,400 traditionally built houses. Beyond housing, the village fosters a true community with laundry facilities, a market, a health clinic, a chapel, and even an amphitheater. This initiative showcases how innovative technology can create dignified, sustainable, and affordable housing, offering a hopeful model for addressing homelessness worldwide.

Previously a real estate investor and developer, Alan founded Trilogy Development and the Lynxs Group, which developed Austin's airport cargo facility and similar facilities at airports around the country. In 1998, the seed for the idea of Mobile Loaves & Fishes had been placed on Alan's heart. Elon Musk hyped the near-term prospects of Tesla's new Giga Texas factory during the company's quarterly earnings call in which the company revealed profits far beyond projections - $3.7 billion in the first quarter of 2022. Another local billionaire, Paul Mitchell's John Paul Dejoria, has continued his longtime relationship with the homeless support organization Mobile Loaves and Fishes with a $5 million donation. An Austin judge has delayed the trial of Alex Jones in the Sandy Hook defamation case, blasting his lawyers for improperly filing bankruptcy for Jones' Infowars network. Travis County DA Jose Garza is adding to his workforce to address the spike in homicides seen in Austin as of last year (part of a national trend). Also in local law enforcement, Austin has almost doubled the number of 911 calls diverted away from APD in favor of mental health service response over the last year. Austin is found to be the second-highest-ranked city in the U.S. for fastest rising rent, up 38% on average in a single year, only behind Portland, Oregon. Yesterday's 4/20 pro-marijuana legalization rally at the Capitol was sparsely attended - however, the Prop A measure to formally end marijuana possession arrests in Austin appears to be primed to pass. The new 48-story tower known as The Republic is preparing for its groundbreaking near Republic Square Park at 4th and Guadalupe. Changes in the UT area: Real estate company Blackstone has bought American Campus Communities for a whopping $12.8 billion - those holdings include several high-rise West Campus apartment buildings such as The Castilian and J26. Meanwhile, Wooten Barbershop (an American Campus tenant) has been booted from its storefront on the Drag after 58 years in business. Austin's rate of food insecurity has risen above the national average, while the USDA identifies 33 distinct "food deserts" across the city, meaning the closest grocery stores are miles away from residents. As a wave of property demolition plans appear to threaten several downtown Austin LGTBQ-friendly bars, plans to tear down the Iron Bear are on hold while the city considers that structure's historical value. Austin FC came up short in their first U.S. Open Cup match against San Antonio, dropping the match 2-1. Meanwhile, allegations of domestic abuse appear to be at the center of the MLS investigation of midfielder Cecilio Dominguez that has resulted in his suspension from play. A lifeguard shortage isn't the only problem at Barton Springs Pool lately - a pair of geese have taken to attacking swimmers, and federal wildlife protections prevent the removal of the offending fowl. Eater Dot Com has listed Austin's Essential Breakfast Tacos, and the Essential Restaurants for Affordable Dining in Austin. Live music options this weekend include the three-day Austin Reggae Festival at Vic Mathias Shores Friday thru Sunday, the ongoing Old Settler's Music Festival at Tilmon, Texas near Lockhart also thru Sunday, Billy Strings at Waterloo Park's Moody Amphitheater on Friday, Girl Talk at Emo's on Saturday, and Everclear at Empire Control Room and Garage on Sunday.

Join host Robert Strock in an interview with guest Alan Graham, founder of Community First! Village and Mobile Loaves and Fishes (MLF) of Austin, Texas. Graham organized and runs a permanent community that offers permanent housing to the unsheltered. However, 20 percent of residents are there voluntarily, coming from a wide range of successful backgrounds. The key to the community's success is the acceptance of everyone for where and who they are in their journey. Graham's time feeding and housing the unsheltered has brought home the importance of one-on-one connection with people. Learning to see and care for the unsheltered as brothers and sisters helps everyone feel valued and like they belong. In the 20s and 30s, caring for the unsheltered fell to the government, using a transactional versus a relational model. Going forward, efforts need to move toward relational, seeing people as people and loving them for it. Part of that relational quality is welcoming those with mental health issues into permanent communities, helping to address their needs while accepting them for who they are. Everyone, unsheltered or not, desires a purposeful life where they're valued. To reach the same success that's been reached at Community First!, there are needed changes in attitudes toward the most vulnerable. If we can learn to embrace and integrate service to the homeless into our societal culture, we can better understand and assist those in need. Alan Graham Started Mobile Loaves and Fishes in 1998, a social outreach ministry that provides food and clothing, cultivates community, and promotes dignity to men and women in need.  He and four friends boldly answered their call to “love your neighbor” by delivering meals to men and women experiencing homelessness from the back of a green minivan. Since its founding, MLF volunteers have served more than 5 million meals with a side of hope to men and women living on the streets of Austin, and the organization has spawned similar food truck ministries in other cities across the U.S. Alan also is the lead visionary behind MLF's Community First! Village—a 51-acre master planned development in northeast Austin that provides affordable, permanent housing and a supportive community for men and women coming out of chronic homelessness. Welcome to the Dear Daughters Podcast in 2021! If there is one thing I learned over the last year, it is the importance of stepping back from the news and media to re-engage in a habit of reading spiritual classics. The authors who I’ll be featuring on the podcast have fought the good fight and remained faithful to the end. There’s just so much we can learn from them. I want to invite you to come along with me this season and dive into the wisdom of these faithful followers of Jesus. This next book is oh so lovely. It’s Hidden Art by Edith Schaeffer. Here are a few interesting facts about Edith: Edith Rachel Merritt Schaeffer was born November 3, 1914, and died March 30, 2013. She was a Christian author, wife of Francis Schaeffer, and mother of Frank Schaeffer and three other children. In 1970, Edith and Francis founded L’Abri in Switzerland. L’Abri is a Christian organization that hosts guests worldwide. In the ’60s, L’Abri’s guests included backpackers, hippies, and even celebrities like Timothy Leary and Eric Clapton. Barry Hankins, a professor of history and religion at Baylor University, wrote, “Without L’Abri, Schaeffer would never have drawn the audience that made his many books possible.” He said that without Mrs. Schaeffer, “there would have been no L’Abri.” Hankins described Mrs. Schaeffer like this: “On one hand,” he said, “she held a very traditional, biblical view about women’s subservient role. On the other, she was assertive, even competitive with her husband ... She embodied marriage equality … She would never use the term, of course, but in some ways, she was the model of a sort of evangelical feminism.” I am most enamored by Edith’s idea of hidden art at home. She believed that we were all created by the Creator to be creative, whether that’s gardening or decorating or painting or writing … Don’t you just love that? Edith wrote, “Art in various forms expresses and gives opportunities to others to share in and respond to things which would otherwise remain vague, empty yearnings.” How do you like to create? My hope is that you find ways to both express and share in many forms of art every day. And I pray that you are forever in awe of the Creator. SHOW NOTES Get a copy of Hidden Art by Edith Schaeffer. A couple of weeks ago, my family and I had the opportunity to travel to Austin. Among visits to too many taco and barbeque joints, I also had to go visit Alan Graham and his team at the Community First Village. The visit was a revelation and Alan, who has an exceptionally busy schedule, was gracious enough to make time to sit down with me. Alan is, the Executive Director and CEO of Mobile Loaves and Fishes, which runs a tripartite mission to help serve people who are currently or have experienced homelessness. I had first heard about Alan’s work when Sarah Dooling mentioned his work during Episode 4 of the podcast. I then watched his TED talk and read his book and was struck by how innovative, entrepreneurial and transferrable the work of Alan’s team was to other areas of the country. To start our conversation, I wanted to talk about Alan’s preoccupation with narrative. To give a sense of what the Community First Village looks like, I’ve shared some images on the HomeLandLab website.

Alan Graham's philosophy, "just say yes", has lead him down many interesting roads and a number of incredible philanthropic projects. Mobile Loaves & Fishes, of which Graham is the CEO, began with the idea to use a catering truck as a distribution vehicle to support the homeless population. It was this entrepreneurial mindset that later propelled the success of that project and many others.  Alan also walks us through the challenges of opening up Community First! Village. Community First! Village is an affordable and permanent housing solution for the homeless population of Austin. It's his faith and dedication that have helped to mitigate the unique problems related to the homeless community. Listen now! Guest Intro paragraph This week I’ve got Evan Wilson from Austin, Texas who is the program director for the blacksmith shop at this nonprofit community organization called Mobile Loaves and Fishes. The Community Forge & Woodshop empowers their community of homeless members to engage in the creation of timeless crafts while also earning a dignified income. Through blacksmithing, woodworking and a range of other projects, the men and women in this Community Works program become part of a restorative journey toward social contribution, financial stability and a mastery of handcrafting skills. Their craftsmen and artists receive 100% of the profit from the sale of their products, enabling them to become more settled and experience greater stability in Community First! Village. They also encounter a greater sense of purpose, healing, and friendships — foundational components of life that every person needs and deserves. What We Talked About   Evan talks about his experience being a striker for Claudio Bottero at the Florida Artist Blacksmith Association in October 2017, “like drinking from a fire hose”. Mobile Loaves and Fishes is a nonprofit organization in Austin that started 19 years ago, they help feed and cloth the homeless population. The organization decided to build their own RV park to house the homeless and start a community centered program on 27 acres with 250 housing units. Within the community they have programs for the members to attend and learn form such as: animal husbandry, ceramics, glass blowing, leatherwork, painting, woodworking and blacksmithing. These programs provide a way to learn how to earn a dignified income, alternative economy. The community has a market and gift shop where they sell the wares of the members. Evan talks about his nonprofit background and how he worked for one in Afghanistan teaching English and helping with a Maternal and Infant Mortality program. He mentions his “Metal Mother” Dawn Raines (the Welding and Blacksmith director at Austin Community College) who taught him a lot in the beginning of his blacksmithing venture. Haley Woodward is another mentor he mentions who took him under his wing and helped a tremendous amount in building the community blacksmith program at Mobile Loaves and Fishes. Evan has now taken the reins of organizing the Austin Forging Competition that started in 2010. It used to be held at the Austin Forging Authority (Haley Woodward and Colby Brinkman’s Shop) and in 2015 Evan mentioned they should hold it at the community Works workshop.   Guest Links Mobile Loaves and Fishes community Works Program link - - https://mlf.org/community-works/ Instagram: @mobileloaves_communityforge   If you enjoyed this episode, I would love it if you would support the show by: telling your friends. sharing this episode using the social sharing buttons below. subscribing to the show and leaving a rating and review in iTunes.  Not sure how?  Just follow these simple steps here or watch the short video tutorial, http://youtu.be/rq4OCyRGjHc?list=UUH3MfNZLXlKgionAs6kMT_Q subscribing to the show in Stitcher, http://www.stitcher.com/s?fid=54499&refid=stpr Thanks so much for your support!

Tiny Houses are often offered up as a solution to homelessness. And while the Podcast Crew may have varying opinions on the subject, we can all agree that our guest this week has the best idea we’ve heard yet. No so long ago, Alan Graham left the comfy confines of his Westlake Hills home and took to the streets to hang with the people who inhabit them. It is a routine Graham has had since 2003, when he began hosting “Street Retreats” as part of Mobile Loaves & Fishes, the Austin nonprofit he co-founded in 1998, whose mission is to restore dignity to homeless people through food, clothing, and camaraderie. But, in all honesty, our favorite contribution of the Mobile Loaves & Fishes organization is the Community First Village. It is a 27-acre community in East Austin that provides affordable, permanent, small houses for the homeless. And, in exchange for modest rent, paid through wages or disability checks, residents have access to features like a medical facility for health screenings, an outdoor movie theater, and, perhaps most importantly, WiFi. We were inspired and impressed by this unique solution and we know you will be too! Hey! Alan! Keep up the great work!! http://mlf.org/

Village, is improving the quality of life for a vast number of people by sharing his personal story of becoming more human through humanizing others. In Welcome Homeless, Graham delves deep into what it means to be connected to God, the earth, and each other. In doing so, he shows us the home we’ve all longed for but never had. The single greatest cause of homelessness is a profound, catastrophic loss of family ~ Alan Graham What does it really look like to love your neighbor? What does it look like for you to share your life and somehow be family to people who may not be just like you?  Alan Graham answers those questions in profound and practical ways. In 1998, he started a ministry to feed the homeless here in Austin.  Since then, he harnessed over 18,000 volunteers to serve over 4,000,000 meals to the hungry.  Oh, yes. That’s amazing but that’s not all. He also started a new movement to house the homeless. And the model is called Community First! Village. He writes about this and more in his new book called Welcome Homeless.  I'm just gonna make an ask here. Will you read the book, check out the ministry and ask God what he might like you to do in your community?  See all the show notes at susiedavis.org
