Nick August-Perna complex documentary feature TELL THEM YOU LOVE ME explores the story of Anna Stubblefield, an esteemed  Rutgers University professor who becomes embroiled in a controversial affair with Derrick Johnson, a Black man with cerebral palsy, and who has been non-communicative since his earliest days. Using a highly disputed technique Anna says she unlocked Derrick's mind from his body by teaching him to communicate using a keyboard. In addition to Anna Stubblefield, we hear from Derrick's brother John Johnson, their mother Daisy Johnson and a variety of academics and doctors who lend their perspective on the relationship and what follows from it. The relationship eventually leads to Anna's arrest and a high profile criminal trial that would challenge our perceptions of disability and the nature of consent. Through exclusive footage and interviews with those on both sides of the case, the film weaves a riveting and endlessly nuanced story about communications, race and sex. Director and co-writer Nick August-Perna (The Oxy-Kingpins) joins us for a conversation on going about gaining the cooperation and trust from the participants, including Anna Stubblefield and her mother, finding a balanced approach to telling the story and his joy at seeing how TELL THEM YOU LOVE ME seems to resonate with audiences at film festivals, 2023 Hamptons International Film Festival, and the 2023 Montclair Film Festival where it won the jury awards for Best Documentary Feature and now as the most popular documentary on NETFLIX. Mostly sunny with high temperatures in the upper 40s. U.S. SUPREME COURT HEARING SPORTS-BETTING CASE TODAY Gov. Chris Christie is in Washington, D.C., today to listen in as the U.S. Supreme Court hears oral arguments about whether sports betting should be legal in New Jersey. Christie has a lot at stake in the case, Kevin Draper and Nick Corasaniti write in The New York Times, as the governor – who has very low approval ratings – looks for something to cement his legacy. If New Jersey loses in court, Christie’s reputation could take another hit. BEAR HUNT UNDERWAY, BUT IT MIGHT BE THE LAST ONE The second part of the 2017 bear hunt began this morning, and if Gov.-elect Phil Murphy fulfills his campaign pledge, it will be the last for a while. In a statement, Murphy said before authorizing any more hunts, he wants a better understanding of the effectiveness and "proof it works better than non-lethal options," Bruce A. Scruton reports for the New Jersey Herald. In the first part of this year's bear hunt, held in October, hunters bagged 244 bears. THE TRAFFICKERS NEXT DOOR: DRUG CARTEL GETS A FOOTHOLD Members of the Mexico-based Sinaloa drug cartel are living in New Jersey, often going unnoticed in local communities, Ken Serrano reports for the Asbury Park Press. “They’re in sleepy towns,” State Police Detective Sgt. 1st Class Larry Williams said. “They’d rather be in a Willingboro or another place where they can’t be robbed or can’t be found. They want to blend into their surroundings.” It’s estimated that the cartel controls about 90 percent of the wholesale heroin that comes into the state. SHOULD FAILURE BE AN OPTION IN NEW JERSEY SCHOOLS? A growing number of school districts are adopting “no zero” grading policies, in which any student who shows up and makes a reasonable effort will earn a grade of at least 50 percent. This has opened debate about the purpose of grades, Carly Sitrin writes for NJ Spotlight. Are they meant to be rewards and punishments, or measures of proficiency? Newer approaches to grading, like no-zero and second-chance testing, are drawing objections from students as well as some teachers and administrators. DISCUSSION OF SEXUAL HARASSMENT TAKES TO NJPAC STAGE When Stephen Colbert, host of “The Late Show,” and Samantha Bee, host of “Full Frontal,” took the stage at NJPAC on Saturday night for the annual Montclair Film Festival fundraiser, the conversation quickly turned to the flood of sexual harassment reports in the news, Sharilyn Johnson writes for Vanity Fair. “The speed and velocity of which everything is coming forward is impressive to me,” Bee said, “and I’m happy to be alive in this moment where people are feeling freer with their stories.” ICYMI: BILL TO BAN BUMP STOCKS ADVANCES IN ASSEMBLY Legislation to ban the bump stock, a device that allows semiautomatic weapons to fire more rapidly, was advanced Thursday by the Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee, Brent Johnson reported for NJ.com. The bump stock was used in the mass shooting two months ago in Las Vegas in which 58 people were killed. The proposed legislation calls for penalties of three to five years in prison and a fine of up to $15,000.

Dolores Huerta is among the most important, yet least known, activists in American history. An equal partner in co-founding the first farm workers unions with Cesar Chavez, her enormous contributions have gone largely unrecognized. Dolores tirelessly led the fight for racial and labor justice alongside Chavez, becoming one of the most defiant feminists of the twentieth century—and she continues the fight to this day, at 87. With intimate and unprecedented access to this intensely private mother to eleven, the film reveals the raw, personal stakes involved in committing one’s life to social change. DOLORES is directed by Peter Bratt (LA MISSION) and Executive Produced by humanitarian and Grammy Award-winning musician Carlos Santana. The film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival this year and continues to be a favorite on the festival circuit, garnering Audience Awards at the San Francisco International Film Festival, Montclair Film Festival, Houston Latino Film Festival and the Denver Women + Film Festival, as well as receiving the Golden Space Needle Best Documentary Award from the Seattle International Film Festival. Director Peter Bratt joins us for an engaging and lively conversation about a visionary leader who refuses to give into to pessimism and inaction. You Can Stroke Me Here, But Not There Cat Behaviorist Sarah Ellis has a pretty cool job. She does research on how and where cats like to be touched. Sarah found that there are certain parts of the cat's body that are better than others when it comes to petting and stroking. She'll reveal her results and explain why she thinks strangers have better luck petting cats than the cat's owner. Tick Talk Only second to fleas, ticks are a fairly common pest. Some of the diseases that ticks carry can kill both human and pet. Doc Halligan will tell you the proper way to remove them. She says you need to avoid some of the 'old wives-tales' for removing ticks because they may actually do more harm. Cloning Pets The first pet to be cloned on American soil was a success. Many people are rushing to genetically preserve their pets DNA. We'll be talking to the company that clones dogs and cats and find out how it's done and why people want to clone their furry-companions. Jon Stewart & Steven Colbert Together for the Animals Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert joined forces again this month at the Montclair Film Festival where Stewart introduced the film "Unlocking the Cage." The HBO documentary movie follows the story of lawyer Steven Wise, who aims to "break down the legal wall that separates animals from humans." Like A Good Neighbor State Farm insurance has been sponsoring The Arson Dog Program since 1993! An accelerant detection canine, or arson dog, is a dog that has been trained to sniff out tiny traces of accelerants that may have been used to start a fire.
