The Week in Westminster

To discuss the increasingly fraught state of world affairs, Jack speaks to Sir David Liddington, who was deputy to Prime Minister Theresa May, and now chairs the defence and security think tank RUSI and the Labour MP and chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, Emily Thornberry. As thousands of farmers attend a rally in Westminster to protest against last month's budget, Jack speaks to Labour MP, Jeevan Sandher, who sits on the Treasury Select Committee and the former Conservative MP and environment minister Rebecca Pow, who comes from a long line of farmers in Somerset. Children's rights campaigner and crossbench peer, Beeban Kidron discusses whether social media should be banned for under-16s. And to reflect on the life of John Prescott, who died this week, Jack speaks to two people who knew him well from his years in government, the associate editor of the Mirror, Kevin Maguire, and a former minister and chief whip in Tony Blair's government, Hilary Armstrong, who now sits in the House of Lords.

The early 1990's gave us two movies that quickly joined the queer cinema canon- "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" directed by Stephan Elliott (1994) and "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar" directed by Beeban Kidron (1995). These two movies were perhaps unfairly compared to one another as they have surface-level plot similarities. Both involve three "drag queens" (term used loosely), both involve a cross-country road trip, and both focus on intergenerational queer relationships. In reality, the two productions had no impact on one another, and have managed to stick around in our collective gay consciousness for very different reasons. Why did To Wong Foo feel the need to educate us on the definition of a drag queen? Does every car that enters the Outback break down? What have got here, a couple of show girls? Jake and Kevin are PUMPed to talk about these two fabulous movies with you this week! Our second mini-series is also underway as we begin to slog through the hairless mire that is the Eating Out series! We kick things off with a dimly-lit bang with the first film in the series this week.

Baroness Beeban Kidron is an award-willing filmmaker, a Crossbench Peer in the UK House of Lords and the Founder and Chair of the 5Rights Foundation. In this eye-opening discussion, Beeban vividly describes how the seed for 5Rights was planted while getting up close and personal with teenagers navigating the physical and digital realms ‘In Real Life'. Beeban sounds a resounding alarm about why treating all humans as equal on the internet is regressive. As well as how existing business models have created a perfect societal storm, especially for children.Intertwining the voices of these underserved and underrepresented stakeholders with some shocking facts, Beeban illustrates the true impact of the current digital experiment on young people. In that vein, Kimberly and Beeban examine behaviors we implicitly condone and, in fact, promote in the digital realm that would never pass muster in so-called real life. Speaking to the brilliantly terrifying Twisted Toys campaign, Beeban shows how storytelling can make these critical yet oft sensitive topics accessible. Finally, Beeban speaks about critical breakthroughs such as the Age-Appropriate Design Code, positive action being taken by digital platforms in response and the long road still ahead.A transcript of this episode can be found here. Our next episode features Giselle Mota. In this episode of Big Tech, Taylor Owen speaks with Baroness Beeban Kidron, OBE, across-bench member of the British House of Lords, a filmmaker and the chair of 5Rights Foundation. Kidron is a strong advocate for children’s online rights. She is a member of the UK government’s Democracy and Digital Technologies Committee working to implement the Age Appropriate Design Code, which explains how the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) applies in the context of children using digital services and sets 15 flexible standards to ensure that children’s best interests are the primary consideration when designing and developing these services. While the internet is still a relatively new technology, it has rapidly come to play a major role in children’s education, entertainment and play. There is now a generation of children who are growing up with online services that only launched a decade or so ago. Children are using platforms such as YouTube, Instagram and TikTok never designed for their age group, with unintended risks and consequences. “We must stop talking about the services that are directed at children, because children spend most of their time in services that are not directed at them… . when you have your discussions about facial recognition, about biometric data, about misinformation, disinformation, all of these things are affecting children. And yet every piece of policy is about YouTube Kids,” explains Kidron. She advocates for the whole of technology to consider younger users when designing and building digital services. But online platforms are failing to meet even minimum standards of protection, which is why Kidron is working on a regulatory approach. “History is littered with things that were not possible until they were mandated. And I am sufficiently old enough to remember when two-factor authentication was going to bring the internet down. And it didn’t. And I’m definitely old enough to remember when GDPR was going to bring the internet down. And I’m not saying all these things are perfect, they are desperately imperfect, but it is amazing how when things are mandated, they are also made possible.”

Beeban Kidron is a rare and very unpredictable film-maker. A woman in a man's world, she's made highly successful dramas such as the BAFTA-winning Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, and the blockbusting rom-com Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason. But she also makes documentaries which come straight from her heart: films about sex workers in New York, the women of Greenham Common, the sculptor Antony Gormley, and a highly-acclaimed film about girls sold into religious prostitution in India. And her latest film In Real Life is a documentary about teenagers and the internet. She talks to Michael Berkeley about the power of music in films, the pleasures of building relationships with composers, the joy of telling stories, and the sheer determination needed to make the films she feels so passionately about. Her choices include music from her film Swept from the Sea and her BAFTA-winning television series Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit; the music of her childhood; the piece which changed her ideas about love; and the scariest film music ever written. The 2012 Cannes Film Festival was criticised when all 22 films in the competition were directed by men. But Hollywood is not much better - a recent study found that less than 10 per cent of its directors were women. So why are there so few women film-makers? Sarah Montague puts that question to Beeban Kidron, one of the few women to have made the big time. She is perhaps best-known for directing the second Bridget Jones movie, The Edge of Reason. But most of her other films concern far more radical material: a documentary about the anti-nuclear women protesters at Greenham Common, a TV adaptation of the lesbian novel Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit. Her latest documentary is about India's sacred prostitutes. Is it women and the choices they make that interests her most?(Image: Beeban Kidron in 2005. Credit: Ian West / PA Wire)
