When Mayor Zohran Mamdani refused to march in New York City’s Israel Day parade - the first mayor of the city to do so in over 60 years – “did not surprise” Rabbi Josh Weinberg, who participated in the parade. But the liberal Zionist Reform rabbi was surprised to discover that he was marching alongside far-right ministers like Bezalel Smotrich and members of the Kahanist Otzma Yehudit party. Had he known, said Weinberg, Vice President of the URJ for Israel and Reform Zionism, speaking on the Haaretz Podcast, he would’ve held a sign making it clear that “Smotrich’s Zionism does not reflect our ideology at all, and is in fact antithetical to who we are as Jews and Zionists, and even as Americans. His brand of racism, discrimination, xenophobia – everything that he stands for – we want to totally reject while still maintaining our love and support for Israel." Weinberg added that a statement by Smotrich that the New York event resembled the Jerusalem Day flag march – an event regularly marked by harassment and violence towards Palestinians in the city – made him “want to throw up.” Also speaking on the podcast, Haaretz's New York correspondent Etan Nechin said that the Israeli ministers in the parade presented their presence as an “act of defiance by the Israeli Knesset and by the Israeli government” to “show” Mamdani. Assessing the mayor’s relationship with the Jewish community over the first six months of his term, Weinberg praised Mamdani’s initiative to increase spending to secure Jewish institutions with the rise of antisemitism, but regretted his boycott of the parade and his high-profile commemoration of Nakba Day online. Nechin countered with his belief that Mamdani had taken advantage of harnessing his popularity to take advantage of “this sudden historic opportunity to platform and champion Palestinian voices.” Mamdani, he said, “is a symptom of American public opinion – especially young Americans who are having conversations about Israel and Palestine, but not on Israeli or Jewish terms. It’s something that the Jewish community and Israelis will need to contend with.” Read more: Majority of Americans Hold Unfavorable Opinion of Israel as Confidence in Netanyahu Plummets, Pew Survey Finds 'We're Done Apologizing': Inside the Israeli Far Right's Big Weekend Out in New York Mamdani 'Offended' by Participation of Far-right Israeli MKs in Israel Day Parade Nearly Half of Young U.S. Jews Want to Replace Israel With Binational State, Poll Finds How Trump's Second Term Marks the Ascendance of The New Jewish Orthodox RightSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, Mike and Laureen examine the war involving Iran and the debate over America's role in the conflict. They discuss CENTCOM testimony from Admiral Brad Cooper defending Operation Epic Fury as a necessary mission that successfully weakened Iran's ability to threaten U.S. interests and regional neighbors. The conversation also looks at contrasting international media coverage, including a CBC News segment featuring John Ferrari Ret U.S Army, American Enterprise Institute; Justin Logan, Cato Institute; and Mike Crawley, CBC News, questioning whether the conflict is progressing as successfully as officials claim. The hosts also address rising violence and antisemitism closer to home, focusing on New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's controversial actions surrounding Nakba Day commemorations and anti-Israel demonstrations targeting Jewish institutions in New York City. They also reflect on the recent shooting at a San Diego Islamic center and school, commemorate the anniversary of the killing of two Israeli Embassy workers in Washington, D.C. and acknowledge King Charles' outreach to and support for Britain's Jewish community. Finally, the episode critiques recent international media coverage, including a controversial New York Times report alleging systemic abuse involving IDF-trained dogs, which the hosts characterize as blood libel, inflammatory and deeply problematic reporting. A poem by Tawfiq Zayyad (1929-1994) who was a Palestinian leader and member of the Israeli Communist Party. He was elected to the Knesset in 1973, representing Rakah and later Hadash until his death in 1994. He was elected mayor of Nazareth in 1975 and served in that role until he died. Between 1958 and 1962 he spent long periods under arrest in Israeli prisons and later was the target of several assassination attempts. On March 30 1976 he led a nationwide strike against land confiscation, a day now commemorated every year as Land Day. He wrote poetry throughout his life.
So Trump went to China and achieved...nothing! May 15th is Nakba day and the third year in a row that we commemorate this day during a genocide that Palestinians say is worse than the 1948 catastrophe. Meanwhile, here at home, ICE finds itself in a legal morass as its kidnappings are deemed illegal. But that isn't stopping them from trying to get in on the good ole fashioned 'Murican tradition of slavery. Also...It's our 300th episode! The world has arguably gotten worse since we first started doing this show. But as we like to say, the world may be fucked but all the people we love are doing beautiful things. Thanks for being here - onwards and upwards to rattle thrones and topple empires. leecamp.net artfromgaza.com

Today, on Nakba Day, we're honored to share a very special interview with you.Nakba Day commemorates the mass displacement of Palestinians that began on May 15, 1948. “Nakba,” the Arabic word for “catastrophe,” refers to the forced expulsion of more than 750,000 Palestinians and the destruction and depopulation of over 500 Palestinian villages, towns, and cities by Zionist militias and, later, the Israeli army.In this episode, Maisa co-hosts with We Rise apprentice Hannah in an interview with Saif Abu Keshek a member of the steering committee for the Global Sumud Flotilla. This interview was recorded at the International People's Tribunal on Palestine in Barcelona, where the People's Tribunal charged the settler colonial state of Israel of genocide and ecocide in November 2025. Together, we discuss how people's tribunals can serve as both a tool and strategy in the Palestine Liberation movement. We also speak about the central role of Palestinian political prisoners in the struggle for liberation. Political prisoners are not only symbols of resistance — they are our compass, grounding the movement in steadfastness, sacrifice, and collective responsibility.Earlier this year, on April 30, Saif — a Spanish national of Palestinian origin — and Brazilian activist Thiago Ávila were abducted while sailing alongside dozens of activists as part of the latest humanitarian mission organized by the Global Sumud Flotilla. Saif and Thiago were imprisoned in Israel for 10 days under brutal conditions, where they endured torture and took part in a hunger strike. The Global Sumud Flotilla continues to sale to break the siege on Gaza. GlobalSumudFlotilla.org@GlobalSumudFlotillaWe Rise will be releasing exclusive interviews with the People's Tribunal organizers and people who shared live testimony in Barcelona, stay tuned in to We Rise Production for episode release. InternationalSolidarity.org/tribunal@InternationalPeoplesFrontThis episode features music by DAM, Abu Arab, Ahmad Kaabour and sounds from the the International People's Tribunal on Palestine in Barcelona.

with Andrew Whitley and Sir Vincent FeanOn Nakba Day, Britain Palestine Project Chair Andrew Whitley and Trustee Sir Vincent Fean return for the second episode of The Situation Report - an unscripted conversation examining the rapidly changing realities in Palestine/Israel and Britain's response to them.Recorded against the backdrop of Nakba Day, this episode explores the deepening crisis in the occupied Palestinian territories, the accelerating annexation of the West Bank, the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, and the growing political consequences of the war both internationally and here in the UK.Andrew and Vincent discuss the proposed E1 settlement expansion east of Jerusalem, why many diplomats have long viewed it as a “red line”, and what practical measures Britain and its allies could take in response. They examine the ongoing displacement of Palestinians in the Jordan Valley and around Bethlehem, the transfer of occupation powers from military to civilian authorities, and the broader implications for the future of a Palestinian state. The conversation also turns to Gaza: the collapse of meaningful international momentum towards a ceasefire or political settlement, worsening humanitarian conditions, restrictions on journalists and aid agencies, and concerns surrounding detainee treatment and international law. Finally, they reflect on how Gaza has reshaped British political discourse - from public protest movements and electoral politics to debates around antisemitism, civil liberties, and the importance of rejecting false binaries between defending Jewish communities and standing up for Palestinian rights. This is a candid, wide-ranging discussion rooted in diplomacy, international law, historical responsibility, and the urgent political questions of the present moment.

Welcome to the liberated zone, Oxford edition. To mark Nakba Day 2024, Beer Christianity co-host Laura visits our local protest encampment to hear from the demonstrators at our local Gaza solidarity encampment. If you have been reading about the student protest encampments at Columbia, UCLA and Berkley universities in the USA (or, better, been seeing videos shot by the people involved), you may have questions. The billionaire-owned media have been providing a narrative that, at best, seeks to ‘both-sides' both the genocide in Gaza and the police-enabled violence at the protests and, at worst paints the protests as anti-Semitic. Attempts by US officials to suggest the encampments are dangerous (‘evidence': an Oxford reader about terrorism and how to stop it) and co-ordinated by sinister world powers (‘evidence': lots of students buy the same cheap tent) would be entirely laughable if they weren't a symptom of a political and media class in lock-step with colonialist militarism, happy to bless America's steady slide into actual fascism. So, instead of talking about the encampments and presuming their motivations, we thought we'd join the many voices of conscience speaking to the people involved. And because we're Christians, aware of the terrible role Christian Zionism continues to play in the suffering of Palestinians (including Palestinian Christians) as well as Israelis of all religions, we spoke to some of the Christians at the Oxford Gaza solidarity encampment. (“We” here really means Laura, who conceived, recorded and produced this episode.) They told us why they are there, what they think about using privilege for good and how they view the risks, as well as what happens in these vilified encampments. WARNING: they do talk about bake sales. Scary stuff. Follow Oxford Action for Palestine @oxact4pal on Insta here for more from the people standing up for justice. New to Beer Christianity? Jonty's novel, Incredulous Moshoeshoe and the Lightning Bird, is not literature but it's quite fun if you like Supernatural, Africa or the Goth scene. We don't really want to preach at you, but some people like to know what we believe. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Editor David Horovitz and senior analyst Haviv Rettig Gur join host Amanda Borschel-Dan in today's episode. Following a visit by National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir to the Temple Mount yesterday, the US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said the US is “concerned by today's provocative visit to the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif in Jerusalem and the accompanying inflammatory rhetoric,” adding that, “This holy space should not be used for political purposes, and we call on all parties to respect its sanctity.” Why are Israeli MKs and ministers increasingly ascending the mount? Rettig Gur drills down into the failure of Israeli and ultra-Orthodox to create a self-sustaining haredi culture. He explains how, by caving into haredi leadership's demands in the budget, the coalition is creating an increasingly fractured Israeli society. Last week, the United Nations General Assembly marked Nakba Day for the first time, including a keynote address by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. Horovitz explains what was remarkable about Abu Mazen's speech. Discussed articles include: US flogs Ben Gvir for ‘provocative, inflammatory' tour on tense Temple Mount On the way up to the Temple Mount, Likud is becoming Otzma Yehudit Ad-libbed at the General Assembly, Mahmoud Abbas's full-blown rejectionism Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Israelis are now celebrating 75 years of independence – 75 years of self-determination for the Jewish people in part of their ancient homeland which for centuries was ruled by foreign empires. There are not many nations that, as the late Charles Krauthammer used to point out, are “living in the same land, worshipping the same God, and speaking the same language as did their ancestors 3,000 years ago.” But not everyone is celebrating. Islamic Jihad — a terrorist organization funded, armed, and instructed by the Islamic Republic of Iran — recently fired hundreds of missiles at Israel from Gaza, a territory from which Israelis withdrew in 2005. Israelis retaliated with precision strikes targeting Islamic Jihad leaders. For the moment, a ceasefire is in effect. On May 15, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas delivered a “Nakba Day” speech at the U.N. General Assembly. Nakba is Arabic for “catastrophe” which is how he and other enemies of Israel regard Israel's birth. Abbas said that the U.S. and Britain are to be “blamed” for creating Israel in order to get rid of their Jews, and he claimed that despite Israel's efforts to excavate under the Al-Aqsa Mosque, which is also the site of what Jews call the Temple Mount, no historical or archeological evidence has been found proving that Jews were present in Jerusalem in the past. In Washington, Rep. Rashida Tlaib staged her own “Nakba” event with help from Sen. Bernie Sanders. And Foreign Affairs, a prestigious American journal, published a long article that also made no attempt to suggest how peaceful coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians might be achieved. The four authors suggest instead that the root of the conflict is, as Islamic Jihad, Mr. Abbas, and Ms. Tlaib would have it: Israel's existence. The solution – implied rather than stated – is to rip out that root. The consequences of such a policy – not least for the more than 9 million Israelis – were not explored. Elliott Abrams read the article and responded in Pressure Points, his blog. He joins host Cliff May to discuss. Elliott has served at high levels in several administrations. He is currently a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, which happens to be the publisher of Foreign Affairs.

After Rashida Tlaib's anti-Israel event in Congress was canceled last week, Senator Bernie Sanders invited her to hold the event at the Senate. The UN also had the audacity to publicly mark the “catastrophe” of the founding of the nation of Israel in a Nakba Day event, sympathizing and even siding with Israel's enemies.

For the first time, the UN is holding a Nakba Day event to commemorate the displacement of Palestinians 75 years ago in Israel's founding war. And, the Republican supermajority in North Carolina vowed to override the governor's veto on a bill that would ban abortions after 12-weeks.

The UN's recent resolution to recognize Nakba Day on May 15, to mark the anniversary of the expulsion of Palestinians from their homes in 1948, helps to acknowledge past traumas but does the resolution have other implications? On this week's episode of Don't Call Me Resilient, we meet up with M. Muhannad Ayyash, professor of sociology at Mount Royal University in Calgary to help unpack some of the meanings behind this resolution.Palestinians were driven off their landSeventy-five years ago, starting on May 15, Palestinians were driven off their lands. This event is what Palestinians have come to refer to as the Nakba. In Arabic, Nakba means Catastrophe. At that time, approximately 750,000 people were violently forced from their homes. In the decades after, tens of thousands of others were murdered and displaced. And millions of Palestinians became refugees.Recently, the United Nations passed a resolution to finally acknowledge that day of catastrophe. The Palestinian UN envoy, Riyad Mansour, said the significance of the UN resolution lies in the General Assembly's acknowledgement of the historical “injustice that befell the Palestinian people.”Why has the UN resolved to acknowledge this history now? Could it be tied to the recent surge in violence in the region?Does the recognition impact anything? Does it change how the conflict is viewed by western powers, like Canada and the United States who actually voted against the UN resolution?Listen and FollowYou can listen to or follow Don't Call Me Resilient on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen to your favourite podcasts. In recent years, German state officials and media outlets have cracked down on Palestinian speech and activism. In 2019, the German parliament passed a nonbinding resolution declaring the global Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement antisemitic, and comparing it to Nazi boycotts of Jewish businesses. Early last year, a state-funded news outlet fired seven Arab and Muslim journalists for “antisemitism” that mostly amounted to criticism of Israel. And last May, Berlin banned several protests planned to mark Nakba Day, which commemorates the 1947–1949 expulsion of an estimated 750,000 Palestinians at the hands of Zionist militias. To discuss Palestine solidarity in Germany, the state's intensifying assault on Palestinian speech, and the connections between the country's targeting of Palestine activism and its post-Holocaust “memory culture,” contributing editor Joshua Leifer talks to Germany-based Palestinian American journalist Hebh Jamal and Palestinian German lawyer Nadija Samour.
