He served as director of editorial projects for National Geographic Travel in Washington, D.C. and throughout her career, he has no doubt been lucky enough to witness many beautiful and awe-inspiring sights. We are especially lucky to have him join us to share all about a must-read book from National Geographic called Here Not There: 100 Unexpected Travel Destinations. Getting people to think differently when deciding where to travel next is a specialty of the travel journalist Andrew Nelson, a writer for two decades with National Geographic Travel and a two-time Lowell Thomas prize winner. Andrew joins Bruce on the podcast to discuss places in his new National Geographic book, Here Not There, revealing 100 alternative travel destinations to the ones we've probably all heard about 1,000 times. Andrew tells us about the places that are overlooked and why they're worth visiting, in addition to the obvious benefit of often being less crowded and less expensive. He guides us to the Miami of the North, the Amsterdam of the Midwest, and a place he describes as the most accessible yet mysterious places he's ever visited. He'll even tell us where you can dance until dawn and drink (responsibly) like a fool. Andrew doesn't just list places in this Travel That Matters episode, but tells us about the history, the tours and events you can attend, and the food that's there for you to enjoy. He emphasizes the element of surprise in travel, while adding in bragging rights that come with being among the few who have traveled to some of these alternative destinations. --- You can find out more details about the locations below mentioned in the episode: Zozobra Festival: https://burnzozobra.com/ The Secret Stairs of Los Angeles https://secretstairs-la.com/ San Cassiano, Dolomites https://www.altabadia.org/en/italian-alps-dolomites/villages/san-cassiano.html Kotor, Montenegro https://www.turismomontenegro.es/ciudades-de-montenegro/kotor/ Alamos, Sonora https://www.gob.mx/sectur/articulos/alamos-sonora Bottleworks Hotel: https://www.bottleworkshotel.com/ --- To learn more about Andrew Nelson, check out his website https://andrewtnelson.com/ --- Travel That Matters is a CurtCo Media production. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Claire Koenig about her role as Co-Chair of the Destinations International PR and Communications Committee. We discuss in detail the creation of the Public Relations Measurement Guidelines Handbook. Claire also shares the upcoming priorities of the Committee, including an update to the Crisis Handbook, work on reputational issues facing destinations, and how the Committee plans to help raise the comms profession up for destinations worldwide. What You Will Learn in this Episode: Why the Destinations International PR and Communications Working Group was formed Claire's part in creating the Public Relations Measurement Guidelines Handbook Why destinations should adopt the standards to refine and modernize their marketing processes Outdated metrics and what we should be looking at these days to evaluate our PR efficacy How the Barcelona Principles work to help destinations score their efforts Next priorities for the Destinations International PR and Communications Committee Understanding Metrics In this episode of Destination on the Left, our guest Claire Koenig sheds light on PR for destinations and the need to move away from traditional metrics like Add Equivalency Value (AVE) and impressions. AVE measures the cost of buying an ad equivalent to the earned media coverage, but it fails to capture the true value and impact of earned media. We discuss why the value of being featured in prestigious publications like The New York Times or National Geographic Travel and Leisure goes beyond a monetary value, as it validates a destination and can have far-reaching benefits, such as attracting conventions and visitors. Tailoring Measurement Practices Claire also dives into the Barcelona Principles and how they offer a scoring system that allows destinations to tailor their measurement practices while creating uniformity across the industry. The Barcelona Principles encourage destinations to evaluate their earned media efforts using a scoring system. This involves breaking down the evaluation into different buckets and assessing factors such as the targeted markets reached, key messages conveyed the nature of the media placement, and the prominence of the destination within the coverage. By calculating scores for these various elements, destinations can derive an overall vertical score demonstrating how their reputation is elevated through earned media generated by their tourism bureau. While measuring the impact of earned media on reputation is challenging due to its wide-ranging effects, the scoring system provides tangible numbers and enhances transparency in the PR and media relations process. One significant benefit of adopting a scoring system, such as the one outlined in the Destination International Public Relations Measurement Guidelines Handbook. is that it allows PR professionals and DMOs to illustrate the value they bring. Current Projects for the Destinations International PR and Communications Committee Claire also highlights the importance of standardizing job descriptions and advocating for salary transparency in the field of travel and hospitality PR. By organizing job descriptions based on the budget size and creating standardized templates, managers and directors can effectively hire the right talent for their teams. National Geographic Travel editor-at-large Don George recounts his recent cruise to the Galápagos Islands aboard a small Celebrity ship specially designed for the archipelago and its wildlife. He says it was a life-changing and healing experience.
Fairbanks Author Dan O'Neill has been enamored with the upper Yukon between Dawson City and Circle for decades. In 2006 he published his travel memoir entitled: A Land Gone Lonesome: An Inland Voyage Along the Yukon River. The book was awarded the Outstanding Alaskana Award by the Alaska Library Association, was named an “Editor's Choice” by The New York Times, and was selected by National Geographic Travel as part of its “Ultimate Travel Library” along with books by John Steinbeck and Edward Abbey. Even so, it is the least well known of Dan O'Neill's books, which is tragic, because his documentation of the subsistence lifestyle and the efforts to stamp it out through regulation are essential to understanding interior Alaska.

The Wildcast Episode 8: Paco Guerrero Photography and Philippine Tourism Paco is a photographer. If anything that is probably the best way to describe him. He has been creating beautiful images since he was 12 years old. He is a Spanish-Filipino Travel and Commercial Photographer who has lived in many around Asia and Europe. He is one of the founding members of GRID Magazine -one of my favorite if not my favorite Filipino Magazine. He talks to me about his life growing up with a hotelier father moving around to different cities in Asia including my own city of Baguio where his father once worked for the Pines Hotel where SM Baguio now stands. We talk about his life of photography where he started and how he started, the opportunities that led him to where he is today. I once spent 10 days traveling with Paco for the Grid Expedition going to different beautiful spots in the Cordillera region and he is someone who is always ON as a photographer -he does not put his camera down because the shoot is done, we drove for hours everyday and you could see him scanning the road and landscape for that next great shot, it is this passion that has made him one of the most sought after in his industry. #202: In 2006, Matt Kepnes worked at a hospital in Boston, and he felt miserable. He dreaded fighting traffic, spending his days under his offices’ fluorescent lighting, drinking stale coffee. He decided to take one year off -- a “gap year” -- thinking that after his sabbatical, he’d resume another 40 years of punching the clock. He worked 60-hour weeks in order to save money for his sabbatical year. He saved $30,000, then handed his boss a resignation letter. Matt traveled for 18 months, returned to Boston, and realized he had lost his willingness to punch the clock. He couldn’t sit still in an office any longer. He re-packed his bags, bought a one-way flight to who-knows-where, and reinvented himself as a travel writer known as Nomadic Matt. He lives on a budget of $18,250 per year, or $50 per day. In the last decade, his travel information website, NomadicMatt.com, has become one of the most popular travel blogs in the world, drawing millions of visitors. His writing has been featured in The New York Times, CNN, National Geographic Travel, and the BBC. He’s a New York Times bestselling author, and he’s traveled to more than 100 countries. In today’s episode, Matt and I discuss the art of slow travel. For more information, visit the show notes at https://affordanything.com/episode202

Their how-to food videos have garnered up to 15 billion views! Now, they've crammed all of that insanity and entertainment into their first-ever cookbook. Inside, you'll find more than 275 recipes and ideas that are meant to be devoured, not perfected. Joanna Saltz was previously the executive editor of Food Network Magazine and Seventeen Magazine, and is a long-time Diet Coke addict. Sounds like fun to us!
