The leading candidate to win NBA Rookie of the Year knows he has a lot of work to do. The Pistons also have a lot of improving to do after winning just 23 games. NBA – Pacers start long offseason looking to overhaul roster When Indiana Pacers president of basketball operations Kevin Pritchard made three midseason trades, it was clear he intended to rebuild. Now, he can begin in earnest. And not much is off limits. After watching the Pacers post their lowest single-season victory total since 1984-85, Pritchard and his front office colleagues will embark on the franchise’s biggest offseason overhaul in months. Indiana remains hopeful it will have three selections in the top 35 picks of June’s NBA draft and can make a play to add some additional pieces in free agency. NBA – Lakers fire title-winning coach Frank Vogel after 3 seasons The Los Angeles Lakers have fired Frank Vogel. The championship-winning head coach is the first member of the organization to take the fall for one of the most disappointing seasons in NBA history. Vogel was fired exactly 18 months after he led the Lakers to the franchise’s 17th title in his first season in charge. Almost nothing went right in the ensuing two seasons for the rosters assembled by general manager Rob Pelinka and coached by Vogel. The former Orlando and Indiana coach went 126-98 in his three seasons running the Lakers. Los Angeles finished 33-49 this year and missed the playoffs. WNBA – Support for Griner at WNBA draft as Howard goes to Atlanta Moments before Rhyne Howard went to Atlanta with the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft, Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said the league is working very hard to help bring Brittney Griner back to the United States. Griner, one of the league’s biggest stars, has been detained in Russia since arriving at a Moscow airport in mid-February. Russian authorities said a search of her luggage revealed vape cartridges that allegedly contained oil derived from cannabis, which could carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. In other Draft news, Michigan Stat’s Nia Clouden went to the Connecticut Sun with the 12th pick, Michigan’s Naz Hillmon went to Atlanta with the 15th pick, Notre Dame’s Maya Dodson was the 26th overall pick to Phoenix. Golf – The Masters – Scheffler’s journey to the Masters a true family affair Masters champion Scottie Scheffler’s journey to Augusta was a true family affair. Scheffler and each of his three sisters have played golf, and his father Scott served as the stay-at-home dad while his mother Diane worked. Scottie Scheffler says having dad at home instead of mom wasn’t unusual to him, and Scott Scheffler said he was happy to be the one that ferried the children to various sporting events. Scott Scheffler described his only son as a “good kid” who will make a good champion after Scottie’s triumph underneath the Georgia pines. NCAAFB – For new coach Freeman, Notre Dame success starts in trenches First-year Notre Dame football coach Marcus Freeman knows success in the 2022 season will depend on how strong the Fighting Irish will be on the offensive and defensive lines. Notre Dame will have new assistant coaches in both places. Respected veteran Harry Hiestand returns for a second stint as offensive line coach. Al Washington is in charge of the defensive line. Notre Dame opens the season Sept. 3 against Ohio State. Please go subscribe and like their podcast, and leave your hot takes about this game in the reviews. 1. Post Villanova starts at 1:00 The shots didn't go in. They were higher quality, and Nova was 30% from their contested threes, and that was the way Michigan could win this game but the shots didn't go in. Also the shots didn't go in. We run out of ways to say that. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Postseason starts at 16:48 Who's coming back? Houstan probably. Diabate on the knife edge. Dickinson we think we can talk around to it. Both? Hnnnggh.. Johns? Eh. Who's in the portal that Michigan can get? Then we go through next year's playable roster. 3. Hot Takes and Hockey starts at 48:46 Wisconsin fans must be livid at Will Smith. Brian gets his USMNT takes in, in fairness to Brady Hoke. We talk about when to pull your goalie in a game where Michigan's goalie kept it from being 4-4 when Quinnipiac suddenly gained the momentum—some of those were flukes though. Look ahead to the Frozen Four. 4. Women's Basketball starts at 1:34:22 Incredible run ends the same way their Big Ten run did: without Brown for the stretch. A salute to Naz Hillmon and her generation, and what they've done to build this program into one that can take the next step into regular tourney threat by hanging with the elites.

Went to @vandywbb where she was an All #secbasketball player and was drafted by the #abl that folded during her first season. Just like that, her basketball career was over. The @wnba was one year old. And still the women have to go overseas to make a decent wage. Things haven't changed that much. Good luck vs @uoflwbb and #goblue tomorrow. @creightonwbb good luck against @gamecockwbb but I won't bet against #dawnstaley . #kyrieirving good luck in your first home game. The panel made the decision in upholding the April 2020 decision by U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff to dismiss a lawsuit by fantasy sports contestants who claimed they were damaged by sign stealing in Major League Baseball. The five men who sued participated in fantasy contests hosted by DraftKings from 2017 to 2019. NFL – Blockbuster: Colts get QB Matt Ryan in trade with Falcons The Indianapolis Colts have acquired their new quarterback, Matt Ryan, in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons. Indy is sending a third-round pick, No. 82 overall, for the longtime Falcons star. Ryan led Atlanta to its second Super Bowl appearance following the 2016 season. That was the same season Ryan was named the league’s MVP. His arrival means the Colts will be starting a new opening-day quarterback for the sixth consecutive year. The rebuilding Falcons quickly announced the signing of Marcus Mariota, a former No. 2 overall pick. The 28-year-old Mariota played sparingly over the past two seasons as a backup to Derek Carr with the Las Vegas Raiders. NFL – QB Stafford: ‘Right time and place’ to give Rams discount Matthew Stafford realizes he almost certainly could have gotten more money in a contract extension after his outstanding debut season with the Los Angeles Rams. Stafford admitted his priority isn’t more dollars. It’s more rings, and he believes his new four-year, $160 million deal through 2026 gives him the best opportunity to win them with the defending Super Bowl champions. Stafford recognizes the absurdity of considering a deal with $135 million in guaranteed money and a reported $60 million signing bonus to be some sort of discount, yet that’s what it is for a proven veteran quarterback of Stafford’s talents. Golf – Still out of sight, Mickelson decides to sit out the Masters Phil Mickelson won’t be playing in the Masters this year. Mickelson has been out of sight since inflammatory remarks against the Saudi-funded rival league and the PGA Tour. He’s no longer listed under players expected to be compete in this year’s Masters. Instead, his name has been moved on the official website to past champions not playing. It will be the first time since 1994 that Mickelson is not at the Masters. He lost sponsorship deals after an interview in which he says he was willing to overlook human rights atrocities if it meant getting leverage over the PGA Tour. Horse Racing – Judge rejects Baffert stay but delays suspension to April 4 A Kentucky judge has denied Bob Baffert’s request to stay his 90-day suspension but delayed it until April 4 to allow his representatives to seek emergency relief through the state’s Court of Appeals. Stewards suspended and fined Baffert $7,500 last month and disqualified Medina Spirit as the Kentucky Derby winner after determining the now-deceased horse had the corticosteroid betamethasone in his system last May. Baffert is fighting that decision. Franklin Circuit Judge Thomas Wingate said Monday that the court understands the gravity of its ruling on Baffert but said that absent relief from a reviewing court, the stewards’ penalties will begin next month. A Baffert attorney said they would appeal.
