Send us Fan MailOn today's episode, we're sitting down with Melodye Phillips, a perinatal mental health certified licensed professional counselor supervisor and certified eating disorder specialist who owns and operates her own practice in East Texas. Melodye specializes in working with mothers through pregnancy, postpartum, loss, complicated pregnancies, birth trauma, and disordered eating. And she brings something to this work that goes beyond her credentials. She's a perinatal mental health disorder survivor, she's a loss mama, she has three kids of her own. Her experience in this field isn't just professional. It's personal, and it shows in the way that she talks about this work. We'll talk about it all today, what it means to hold space for mothers in some of their hardest moments, and what it looks like when the person doing the work has lived some of those moments herself. Oh, and let's just say that delivering a baby can take some unexpected turns. There was an incident involving a squirrel, a transformer, and electricity at the hospital. We don't want to spoil it. We'll let Melodye do the honors. When she changed her mind, Kendall and her husband made a plan. They knew that with her mental health history, postpartum depression was a real possibility, and they made sure that supports were in place before ever trying to conceive. They did everything right, and it was still incredibly hard. Today, we'll hear about pregnancy loss, an early birth, a baby with silent reflux, a pandemic, and a version of motherhood that looked nothing like what she planned for. We'll talk about what it's like to prepare for something and still be leveled by it and how she found her way through anyway. Oh, and she wrote a children's book that helps kids understand what it looks like when mom is struggling with depression. So of course, we'll drop a link to that in the show notes as always.
