Jeff is a director, writer and dramaturg who has worked across the globe on his own work, Shakespeare and ballet companies. As well as being a long time friend and collaborator of Ivo Van Hove. His most recent production was an adaptation of Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale at the Dailes Theatre in Latvia. Setting it in the modern era of social media/Silicon Valley with the characters being absorbed into the internet. Jeff discusses his show and how he likes to call the Winter's Tale the bard's "wildest and unpredictable" play. Other productions include an adaptation of Jane Austen's Persuasion that played at the Rose Theatre, Kingston. Jeff takes on Austen in a slightly different way that one may expect. Instead of the "traditional" Austen set and costumes Jeff strips it all back with minimal set and modern day dress, allowing the audience to hear the words rather than see the costumes and the horses. Further work he's been a part of includes: Macbeth at The Globe Shooting Hedda Gabler at the Rose Theatre, Kingston Uncle Vanya, Minerva Theatre, Chichester Antigone at the Barbican, Luxembourg, Amsterdam Blurred Lines at the National With Ivo Van Hove he's worked on: View From The Bridge, Wyndham's Theatre with Mark Strong Hedda Gabler, National Theatre The Changeling, Young Vic A Little Life, Richmond, Pinter and Savoy Jeff talks me through his directing process, Shakespeare, adapting it into the modern day and working with actors who may not speak your first language. In the last weeks of Opening Night, Hadley Fraser kindly sat down with us to talk about his experience with the show and to look back on some of his recent credits too. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music, Hadley has proven himself to be one of the most versatile actors on the West End stage, taking on principal roles in both musicals and classic plays. Hadley has also worked extensively in regional theatre, championing venues like Chichester Festival Theatre, Sheffield Crucible and Manchester's Royal Exchange. During Josie Rourke's tenure at the Donmar Warehouse, he also worked closely with the Donmar team on a number of shows including Coriolanus, Saint Joan and City of Angels. The Donmar was also where he met his now-wife: Olivier nominee Rosalie Craig with whom they share a daughter. The couple still occasionally work together, most recently on a livestream of Stuart Matthew Price's Before After and we look forward to seeing the pair on stage again soon.In this new interview, Hadley Fraser opens up about his experience as a performer and as a creative. He talks to us about his current experience of putting together Opening Night with Ivo Van Hove and discusses the importance of taking risks, even when in a difficult financial climate. He admits he was aware the show would split opinion but remained intrigued by the avant-garde director's vision of the show and shares his admiration for Wessex Grove Productions, Rufus Wainwright and Ivo Van Hove. As he prepares to take his final bows next month, he remains grateful for the time spent with this company as he looks ahead to life after Opening Night.Opening Night runs at Gielgud Theatre until 18th May with tickets available NOW.

Emilio Doorgasingh is another member of the Little Life family playing “Andy”, Jude's Doctor at the Richmond Theatre, Harold Pinter Theatre and Savoy Theatre this year. This episodes contains spoilers! His other credits include, for screen: Casualty Ted Lasso Series 2 Game of Thrones For stage: The Kite Runner, West End and UK Tour Present Laughter Much Ado About Nothing, The Globe Best of Enemies, Young Vic and Noel Coward Theatre alongside David Harewood and Zachary Quinton A Little Life Amongst many more… Emilio discusses his two huge theatre projects he's been a part of this year, Best of Enemies (dir. Jeremy Herrin) and A Little Life (dir. Ivo Van Hove). With Best of Enemies he played multiple characters in James Graham's play that explored the political landscape of the USA during the 1960s. From journalists to Gore Vidal's (Zachary Quinto) life partner and the demands of a high fuelled energetic show with multiple costume changes and characters to jump between every night. For A Little Life he played “Andy” a doctor who has a difficult relationship with Jude (James Norton). Emilio talks about how he found the parallels of Andy's character, how on one hand he's a medical professional frustrated that his patient won't take his advice, and on the other he's a compassionate soul who doesn't want to push his already deeply traumatised friend into something he doesn't want to do. Stop hurting himself and get better. Emilio gave a stellar performance as Andy and in his many roles in Best of Enemies and it was a pleasure to talk to you sir! Ivo van Hove is renowned as one of the most innovative — and divisive — theatre directors working today. The Belgian's enthralling stage adaptations of classic works consistently subvert expectations. Now, van Hove's adaptation of the confronting novel A Little Life is coming to the Adelaide Festival. Also, a married lesbian couple with two children face divorce in Blessed Union, a new comedy at Belvoir, and Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap, the longest-running play on London's West End, is touring Australia. But is it a paragon of modern theatre or a tourist trap?

Michael Zegen is an actor who may be most well known for his various roles on TV, including Joel Maisel, on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Damien Keefe, on Rescue Me, in addition to various recurring roles on Boardwalk Empire, The Walking Dead, How To Make It In America, and Girls. Michael made his Broadway debut in Ivo Van Hove's Tony Award winning A View From The Bridge starring opposite Mark Strong in 2015. Other theatre credits include creating the role of Liam in Bad Jews off-Broadway, and Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, and The Spoils, both with The New Group. His film credits include The Seagull, Frances Ha, Brooklyn, Adventureland, and Taking Woodstock. You can currently catch Michael back on the Broadway stage in the breakout play Trouble In Mind. Michael chats about his newest role as Al Manners in Trouble In Mind, calling the production bittersweet as Alice Childress (the black female playwright) was never able to see her dream of having a play on Broadway come to fruition while she was alive. He opens up about what he finds so satisfying about performing on stage, but why ultimately he's not particular about the medium (film, TV, theatre), as long as he's doing good work with great people. Michael also shares some of his first impressions from the early days of filming The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and what's it's been like to witness the show get bigger and bigger every year. When you're a theater kid, you're a theater kid all the way: this week, playwright and screenwriter Monet Hurst-Mendoza (The Kilroys, Law & Order: SVU) and I take a trip down memory lane in a redux of West Side Story. Turns out we have plenty to say about cultural misappropriation, truly terribly brownface, and some ham-fisted dramaturgical racism. All this plus Broadway politics in the 50s, Hollywood culture in the 60s, and why you shouldn't sleep with your brother's murderer. Remember live theatre? Remember when the big story back in late February was the controversial Ivo Van Hove production of West Side Story on Broadway? Daniel Pollack-Pelzner, a professor of Shakespeare, English, and Gender Studies at Linfield College in Oregon, and a contributing writer to the New York Times and Atlantic magazine, wrote an article for the latter entitled, “Why West Side Story Abandoned Its Queer Narrative,” and, in this interview recorded on March 3, 2020, discusses the merits of the van Hove production and his insights into the original narrative. Featuring the peril of picking one’s prepositional poison; how a dorky 50s musical speaks to modern concerns about racism and police violence against communities of color; the struggle for Tony's body; the problems with "I Feel Pretty;" Jerome Robbins’ lost play; expressing Jewish identity in the 1950s through ethnic minstrelsy; how Arthur Laurents “improved” on Shakespeare in particularly troubling ways; the rightness of questioning problematic aesthetics; the casting controversy in the recent Broadway production; and, most importantly, the feeling that when you love something you want to know and discuss everything about it.
