Video recording of this episode is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OcxwmDuUeU&ab_channel=UCD-UniversityCollegeDublin Henry Glassie is College Professor Emeritus at Indiana University, Bloomington, USA, and has published widely in the fields of material culture and vernacular architecture. His contribution to the discipline of Irish Folklore and Ethnology has been exceptional. Having lived in Ballymenone, Co. Fermanagh, for almost a decade in the 1970s, Professor Glassie published a number of studies inspired by the community there, including All Silver and No Brass (1975), Passing the Time in Ballymenone (1982) and The Stars of Ballymenone (2006). These books are landmark works which have become classic texts for students of Folklore in Ireland and abroad, along with many other items on Professor Glassie's long list of publications. Henry has rendered invaluable service to our understanding of Irish popular tradition and vernacular culture, and he can truly be described as a towering figure in the study of Irish Folklore for more than half a century. Even in his retirement, he remains a staunch and committed friend to Ireland and to the people he worked with while carrying out fieldwork here. Henry has had a long and extremely positive relationship with UCD since the establishment of the Department of Irish Folklore in the university in the early 1970s. With the approach of the fiftieth anniversary of his first major publication on Irish Folklore, All Silver and No Brass, it was deemed especially appropriate for the University to take the opportunity to honour Professor Glassie, and on Wednesday 21 May 2025, Henry was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from UCD, in recognition of his remarkable contribution to the growing area of Irish Studies in general, and to the field of Irish Folklore and Ethnology in particular. It was a great honour and personal privilege for me to sit and 'Pass the Time' with Henry, and over the course of ninety minutes we explored his background, interests, intellectual life, and experiences of field work, as well as delving into the topics of place, creativity, art, meaning, identity, belonging and despair; invoking old friends such as Fred B. Kniffen, E. Estyn Evans, Michael J. Murphy, Seán Ó Súilleabháin, Ellen Cutler, Tommy Love, Michael Boyle, Peter Flanagan, and Hugh Nolan as we trooped our way homewards. My thanks to all my colleagues at the NFC, as well as Susan Lysaght, Sandra Collins, Evelyn Flanagan, Andrew Fogarty, Veronica Aguilar Olmos, Dominic Martella for making this episode possible, and - most especially - to Henry and Pravina for their generosity, openness and kindness.

D'imigh Sandra Collins gan tasc gan tuairisc ó Chill Ala, Contae Mhaigh Eo, sa bhliain 2000. Níor thángadar ar a corp riamh. It's a sad fact of life that in the major cities of the world, missing person cases are a dime a dozen. In places like London, New York and Tokyo, tens of thousands of people vanish every year, to the point where they're barely even newsworthy. But in a quiet seaside village like Killala, on the west coast of Ireland, the disappearance of just one person can upend an entire community. That's what happened when twenty eight year old Sandra Collins left her home on a wet December night in the year 2000…and never came back. For her brother Patrick, her disappearance has cast a long, dark shadow over the region and has haunted the Collins family ever since. Micke on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 1pm PST 11/10/22 About Micke - In 1998, Micke co-founded Liquid Lounge (now known as Liquid Lounge SoundSystem), with good friend & long-time business partner, Erik Johnson, known as EJ. Together they formed a DJ collective & promotion group, which was led by Contrast, Micke & EJ's tag team name. As part of Contrast, Micke was regularly playing some of the most notable venues on the East Coast. Micke gained notoriety as a sound & lighting tech for Primacy, a major venue owner in DC — most notably at Club Five and Nation — Micke's hard work and dedication was recognized by Scott Henry, the founder of Buzz, who hired him onto his management team. Buzz was one of the most well known and influential weekly club events in rave history. Thanks to Buzz, Micke's talent was quickly noticed by some of the biggest names in Electronic Music including: Sasha, Hybrid, The Crystal Method, Tarantella & Redanka, Paul Oakenfold, BT, Judge Jules, Max Graham, Armin Van Helden, Dave Ralph, Deep Dish, PVD, Chris Fortier, Carl Cox, Scott Dixon, DJ Dan, Scott Henry, Charles Feelgood, DJ Keoki, and Donald Glaude to name a few…. and of course, Sandra Collins. Micke earned a Buzzlife residency, putting him and his collective, Liquid Lounge, in regular main room rotation at Buzz. It was then that Sandra Collins noticed his skills, and requested Micke as her opening DJ whenever she played at Nation. On top of an active performance schedule, Micke was grinding for Deep Dish and their online label site, Yoshitoshi Records, as Customer Service Manager & Assistant Music Purchaser, under the direction of Alex Whalen, General Manager of Yoshitoshi Records (Store) and Yoshitoshi.com. In 2006, Micke took a hiatus from performing to focus on honing his production skills. Now, he's surging back, hitting the scene heavy with original tracks & collaborations with such artists as Sandra Collins, Scott Dixon (Voyager), & Andy Woldman. He has continued to evolve his 20 year music partnership with EJ, as Temporal Mental, in parallel to his solo career. Micke represents District Ignition, Buzzlife Productions and Liquid Lounge SoundSystem, which are stables from his Washington, D.C. roots. In late 2017, Micke's collaboration with Sandra Collins began to shine. As of November 2018, Sandra & Micke have signed 9 original tracks along with 3 remixes across 4 different labels. These labels include: Perfecto Black, Pro B Tech Music, Stripped Digital, & Stripped Recordings. Emerging in Washington, D.C. twenty years ago, in the prime of the rave era, Micke was a talented & bright, yet unknown artist in an overgrowing sea of bedroom DJ's. In 1998, Micke co-founded Liquid Lounge (now known as Liquid Lounge SoundSystem), with good friend & long-time business partner, Erik Johnson, known as EJ. Together they formed a DJ collective & promotion group, which was led by Contrast, Micke & EJ's tag team name. Micke became a Buzz resident with regular, main room rotations. It was then that Sandra noticed his skills, requesting Micke as her opening DJ whenever she played at Nation. While playing regularly, Micke also grinded for Deep Dish's Yoshitoshi Records, alongside mentor, Alex Whalen. In '06, Micke took time away from DJing to focus on his production skills. Now, he's back performing & working with such artists as: Sandra Collins, Voyager, & Charlie May, in parallel to his solo production & performance career. In fact, as of Dec 2018, Sandra & Micke have signed 9 tracks along with 3 remixes across 4 different labels. These labels include: Perfecto Black, Pro B Tech Music, Stripped Digital, & Stripped Recordings. In support of these releases, the duo started a national tour beginning in Spring 2019. - Micke is a affiliated with District Ignition, Liquid Lounge, & Buzzlife, WDC - Bookings: facebook.com/djmicke About The DJ Sessions - “The DJ Sessions” is a Twitch/Mixcloud "Featured Partner” live streaming/podcast series featuring electronic music DJ's/Producers via live mixes/interviews and streamed/distributed to a global audience. Kaspar Tasane on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 8/8/22 About Kaspar Tasane - Kaspar Tasane was named the one to watch in 2020 by Soundgarden Resident Gustin in DMC World Magazine. “His music just totally blows me away. It's elegant yet driving, and has a timeless energy that often reminds me of the mid 1990's progressive sound.” Hailing from Tallinn, Estonia, Kaspar has used his experience growing up in the European trance scene to bring his own unique flavor to his progressive house beats. It's a missing person's case that has cast a dark shadow over a small town in County Mayo where the haunting face of Sandra Collins stares out from posters more than 20 years since she was last seen. However, Sandra has not been forgotten despite the passage of time. Her brother and sister still hope that they can one day lay her to rest and find their own peace from the nightmare of her mystery disappearance. Sandra had just found out she was pregnant on the night she was last seen buying chips from a takeaway in Killala. Now, Bridie Conway and Patrick Collins remember their fun-loving sister and recall her lonely life caring for an elderly aunt in a small town of secrets.
This Reboot Republic podcast is the first part of our Budget 2022 Panel Analysis. This first panel of four guests gets a social justice and equality analysis of Budget 2022, its measures, positives, and failings with Colette Bennett, policy analyst with Social Justice Ireland who talks about welfare, housing and health, SIPTU economist Michael Taft who highlights the need for investment rather than the 'balanced budget', Focus Ireland Coordinator and SPARK Spokesperson Louise Bayliss who focuses on inadequacies and insecurities of HAP, and the lack of focus on child poverty, and giving the experience of a renter and a 'values' perspective, Maynooth University Graduate and Youth Worker, Sandra Collins. It will be 20 years on Friday, December 4th since Sandra Collins disappeared in Killala, Co Mayo. Despite a fleece jacket being found by the local pier, it’s believed that she didn’t take her own life by jumping into the sea but was rather abducted, murdered and buried in a shallow grave. Her brother Patrick believes someone is harbouring a secret as to what happened to her that night and he’s begging them to just let the family know where she is buried. On Wednesday, which is National Missing Persons Day, Patrick Collins joined Kieran on The Hard Shoulder. As well as that, Geoff Knupfer is Chair of the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims Remains, and explained what the response is when a person disappears.

Tracks on the second mix waste no time either. Salina’s ‘Swirl’ is a beautiful synth-laden shower of melodic progressive house before heading into deeper territory from Heller & Farley courtesy of the Bedrock Mix treatment. Who can forget Sandra Collins and Voyager before a crescendo that is simply Bedrock legend: Heaven Scent. These CD’s are going on today. 21 years old and still sound as fresh as and relevant today.

Sandra Collins used to be (and still is) one of my favourite DJs. Long, slow mixes where you could barely tell where one track started and the next begun. That's how I felt playing this week's set. Now, sometimes when I finish a set feeling really good, a second listen proves otherwise, but fingers crossed this one will have you melting into your chair.
Hailing from Tallinn, Estonia, Kaspar Tasane uses his experience growing up in the European trance scene to bring his own unique flavour to his progressive house beats. Kaspar's unique sound has garnered support from almost every corner of the electronic music scene, including by trance legends Airwave, Matt Darey, and Armin Van Buuren who showcased his track Fusha at A State of Trance Festival 700. As Kaspar's style has evolved to a more underground progressive sound, DJs such as Sandra Collins, Tripswitch, Wally Lopez, and Soundgarden resident Gustin have all shown their support. 2019 promises to be an exciting year for Kaspar Tasane with new releases coming out every month, including remixes for legendary Sandra Collins and Micke and several EPs on some heavyweight labels in the progressive house scene. Dr. Sandra Collins, Director of the National Library of Ireland, discusses how national libraries are memory keepers for their countries, collecting and keeping safe memories that share the culture, heritage and story of their nation. The interpretation of memory may change over time, and it's important to preserve the authentic source materials. Memory objects include photographs, manuscripts, ephemera - but contemporary memory objects are increasingly ‘born digital' and they can be challenging to collect and keep safe as digital technologies become obsolete quickly. The National Library of Ireland collects and makes available the recorded memory of Ireland. We care for more than 10 million items, including books, newspapers, manuscripts, prints and drawings, ephemera, photographs, digital content and the National Web Archive. About the speaker Dr Sandra Collins is the Director of the National Library of Ireland. Originally a mathematician, she has worked in digital innovation and cultural heritage over 20 years in the public and private sectors. She was previously the founding Director of the Digital Repository of Ireland in the Royal Irish Academy and a Scientific Programme Manager in Science Foundation Ireland. She is a member of the Council of the Research Data Alliance, the Irish Government's Open Data Governance Board, the Irish National Open Research Forum, the Consortium of National and University Libraries, and the Irish Government's Expert Advisory Group for Commemorations. She has served on a number of European Commission Expert Advisory Groups including Research Infrastructures and FAIR data, and is a member of the Irish Manuscripts Commission and a Trustee of the Chester Beatty Library. About the Heritage Podcast Series To Preserve and Protect: Contemporary Issues in Irish Cultural Heritage This is a series of eight 20 minute podcasts by academic researchers and leaders of major Irish heritage institutions. In today's episode, we spend some time digging into the progressive house and trance sounds of the 1990s and early 2000s. A close friend joins David as a guest co-host, and together, they explore the dark, tribal, melodic, and hypnotic rave sounds of “the Bedrock era”. Predictably, we spend much of the episode talking about Sasha and Digweed, though a few other names come up along the way (Nick Muir, Nick Warren, Sandra Collins, Quivver…) First, we skim through the Bedrock album… that is, the 1999 DJ mix album titled Bedrock, mixed by John Digweed. From track one, you're getting a serious lesson in progressive house. Raff 'N' Freddy's “Listen” has the uplifting diva vocals and shuffling beat of a house tune, but the dark and hypnotic features of early trance music. The whole mix is put together in such a beautifully cohesive way, that we present it here as one of the greatest examples of its kind. Next, we have a look at Global Underground 013 (Ibiza) by Sasha. We play through the transition of Space Manoevres - Stage One (Pariah Remix) to Sander Kleinenberg - Sacred, and discuss just how beautiful it is. Things get fairly trancey in the mix… back when “trance” really meant something. Finally, we explore Global Underground 019 (Los Angeles) by Digweed, which starts out with the classic Apollo Vibes by Pole Folder. This mix gets really down into the nitty gritty, where the influence of the rave is undeniable. This percussive, driving mix demands that your feet move without stopping. We also note how modern techno has really begun to work its way towards the sounds of dark tribal progressive house from yesteryear. Overall, the conversation between David and his friend Tommy centers around the progressive dance music sounds from the start of the millenium. Other topics covered are: what makes a good transition, trance as an idea (rather than a genre), the joys of mixing vinyl vs. digital DJing, and the tag sets they used to play together in Dayton, 10 years ago. Sit back, and come along for the journey.

For this latest Pink Mammoth Podcast episode, we are excited to feature a live mix-straight from Lighting in a Bottle- from our friend, and co-owner of pocket underground, Sammy Bliss. Catch him live with our own Pink Mammoth resident, Gravity at Public Works-This Saturday, 22nd for Do LaB's Woggie Nights. http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=257926920911594 ABOUT SAMMY BLISS: Sammy grew up in and around New England, finally landing on the East end of Long Island. Addicted to music at a very young age Sammy was a skilled mix-tape DJ, but it wasn't until he found himself in LA that the door opened for him to House music and the scene that went with it. Sammy was introduced to Jesse Wright through a mutual friend in 2002 and that was pretty much the beginning of the end. Together Sammy and Jesse formed Pocket Underground and starting throwing parties in a warehouse location right in the center of Hollywood. Shortly thereafter Sammy took a credit card to Guitar Center and bought his first pair of Technique 1200's. Since then Sammy has made asses shake all over the West coast, from San Fran to Mexico. He's had the immense honor of playing every year at Coachella since 2007, his crew Pocket Underground held a monthly residency at the mega-club Spundae LA from 2005-2007, and Sammy and Jesse run the Woogie Stage at the annual green festival Lightning in a Bottle where they've booked talent ranging from Lee Burridge, to Sandra Collins, John Tejada, Claude VonStroke, Nick Warren, Jay Tripwire and many more. He's played several times at the SF LoveFest Parade (So fun!!), Avalon Hollywood, Burning Man, Elysium Festival, Fuente Eterno, and more underground parties than you can shake a stick at. Having recently moved to the San Francisco East Bay area, 2011 is looking better than ever. With gigs at Coachella, The Alchemy Festival and Lightning in a Bottle in the immediate future, Sammy will be branching into the SF scene and is working out the details for a gig in Santa Fe this summer. Sammy's deep connection to the dirty, chuggy 4/4 always keeps the crowd riding his wave of delicious tech house and chunky techno right into the dawn. He loves connecting to each and every person on the dance floor as they journey together down the rabbit hole of funky beats.
CLASSICS :: 1997-2005 Anyone who was in the rave or club scene from 1997-2005 will absolutely find something in here for them. Hopefully some of these will hit you the way they have me. If you were never a part of that scene, try to imagine a subculture movement that has been compared to the hippy revolution of the sixties. This mix is a tribute to those crazy times. My criteria? It's totally personal. Epic parties, epic clubs, great friends, great memories. Some of these songs transcended the genre, some were from dj mixes that moved me, some are meticulously produced, but all of them have some incredible memory attached to them. Underworld, Oakenfold, Sasha, PVD, U2, Junkie XL, Radiohead, Oliver Lieb, The Crystal Method, Sandra Collins, Solar Stone, BT, Ferry Corsten, Robbie Rivera, Felix Da Housecat, Timo Mass, Hybrid, and Moby are all a part of this mix. They had a huge impact on the electronic movement. This mix is pretty intense and captures the turn of the century electronic music vibe pretty well, IMO. I hope you feel the same way that I do about it. Thanks for listening!
