By the time Roaming arrived last year, it had been nearly a decade since This One Summer, the last collaboration between cousins Jillian and Mariko Tamaki. The comic was their second joint project, follow 2008's award-winning debut, Skim. This One Summer won the pair an Eisner, Ignatz and Coldecott, before running afoul of overzealous censorship boards, due in part to its compassionate and humane approach to writing LGBTQ youths. Targeted at a YA audience, Roaming's cast is older, but the book similarly approaches a budding queer relationship, as three college aged woman travel from Canadian to New York City for a whirlwind trip. Jillian and Mariko Tamaki are talented graphic novelists. And if you didn't already know, the two are also cousins. They've collaborated on three projects so far that cover themes like sexual expression and queerness. Their latest is Roaming. On Bullseye, they chat about the project and the art of under-explaining in comics. Plus, they reflect on what it was like to be thrust into a heated national censorship debate with the launch of their indie graphic novel, This One Summer.

We previously reviewed their coming-of-age collaborations "Skim" and "This One Summer." "Roaming" is in fact three coming-of-age stories in one. Three young women take a trip together to New York City in 2009 (we say 2005 in the podcast. We are wrong). Two of these women, Danny and Zoe, are old friends who have planned this trip for a long time. The third, Fiona, is Danny's mercurial friend whose presence soon disrupts the entire trip.

SummaryTonya led a discussion on banned books with guests Brenna Thummler, Veronica Klash, and Tony Farina. They explored the importance of reading banned books, the fear often underlying attempts to ban them, and the need for ongoing conversations about these issues. The book under discussion was "This One Summer" by Mariko and Jillian Tamaki. The group also discussed the accessibility of books in schools and libraries and the impact of banning books on readers. Brenna expressed concern about parents restricting their children's access to books, suggesting a warning system to inform parents about book content. Veronica, Tonya, Brenna, and A.R. discussed the influence of literature on children and the concept of the "slippery slope" in relation to book banning. The discussion ended with Tonya noting a pattern in the themes that get books banned, prompting reflection on societal progress. The group also discussed the shifting power structures in society and the resistance to progress. They touched on the importance of reading books that may be considered offensive, as they offer the opportunity for empathy and understanding. The conversation also delved into the challenges of writing about mental health in literature and the responsibility of writers to educate themselves to avoid unintentionally using offensive statements. Veronica and Tonya emphasized the importance of anti-racist practices, including actively doing the work to avoid offense, rather than relying solely on intentions. "This One Summer", a graphic novel published in 2014 is a coming-of-age story, won several prestigious awards including an Eisner award and an Ignatz award. Brenna first discovered it in a thrift store in 2015 and was drawn to it due to its beautiful illustrations. The book influenced her to work on her first graphic novel, "Anne of Green Gables.” A.R. was one of the first to receive an advance reader copy (ARC) of "This One Summer" from Net Galley, and after reading it, he's been a fan ever since. Veronica was also attracted to the graphic novel format, as it was a type of literature she enjoyed in her childhood. People buy books from them to have them donated to teachers and students directly. Sales money goes back to Moms for Libraries to fund more donations (allegedly).  Donating directly to students rather than libraries.  Agenda as self-describedFocus on restrictions on “public school libraries” (very deliberate phrasing, always includes the public part). Probably to conflate school libraries with public libraries so they can censor those as well in the name of school aged children. Tend to avoid talking about public libraries when on the defensive. (“If N.C. statutes require parental consent for sex education, why are we freely allowing sexually explicit materials in our public school libraries and classrooms?”)  Probably also use Public School to differentiate from Charter Schools, home schooling Pushes for early literacy and funding of libraries (for the moment) Mixture of ideology. Wedging into liberal support until it shifts. TERF behavior.  Focus on transparency language (identical to Gov. DeSantis anti DEI order).  Most local chapter members believe these are legitimate grassroots organizations. May not have lasting power when the people funding it lose interest.  Fights over school boards are nothing new, the homeschooling movement has been infiltrating public school boards for decades. Will also attempt to divert funds to charter schools. Moms for DeSantis explicitly against public education by promoting Crimes of the Educators.

We're jetting off to Europe (the UK and France specifically) for an episode that revisits Brenna's coming of age author Aidan Chambers, whose measured and considered prose frequently tackles queer coming of age tales. Here it's the story of the troubled romance between Hal and Barry, which avoids being just another queer tragedy thanks to its often unreliable narrator and Chambers' clever framing device.Ozon's film relocates the story to France in a faithful adaptation that focuses more on the romance between Alex (the Hal character) and David (the Barry character), but adds gorgeous sun-touched imagery and a beautifully vital club scene that anticipates the finale. There's a lot to like here, so don't be afraid of checking out this lesser known pairing!Want more Aiden Chambers? Grab a tissue because we're in for another emotional episode (guess who cries twice? It's not Brenna) as we tackle a grounded, non-sensational depiction of the aftermath of a school shooting. Featuring astounding performances by Jenna Ortega and Maddie Ziegler with strong supporting roles for Modern Family's Julie Bowen and The Divergent Series' Shailene Woodley, The Fallout is powerful consideration of the lingering traumatic effects of gun violence. It's been a while since we've talked about "the procedure", so prepare yourself for an education as Brenna reviews the state of reproductive health in Canada and the US (caveat: we use the term "women's" reproductive health, but should have acknowledged that non-binary and trans people also get abortions). It's in-depth, and disappointing (we might get a touch upset!) but it's in service of our discussion of Caplan and Hendriks' delightful book that does a lot of heavy lifting in a funny, quick-to-read package.Plus: comparing the book's crappy men to their film counterparts, Haley Lu Richardson and Barbie Ferreira's great film chemistry and just how many times will Joe say the A word?If you want more "Big A" talk, check out episodes 1.01 "Perks of Being a Wallflower"  and 2.32 "Never Rarely Sometimes Always (And More Sex!)Wanna connect with the show? What more can be said about Holden Caulfield, the teenage protagonist of Salinger's iconic 50s novel? Not Brenna or Joe!  After gushing over the swoon-worthy romance of Menon's debut meet-cute coding novel, the majority of the episode tackles the adaptation issues of the TV show, which misses the mark in more than a few ways.Don't get us wrong: we love  Prajakta Koli and Rohit Saraf as Dimple and Rishi, but the series is so concerned with packing in supporting characters and issues (Disability! The artist Jillian Tamaki and her cousin the writer Mariko Tamaki each have dynamic careers in illustration and comics. You might have seen Jillian's art in The New York Times, or on the covers of Penguin Classics. And Mariko has sharpened her pen writing a variety of superhero comics including Harley Quinn, Hulk, and Supergirl. Most recently, DC Comics appointed her as lead writer on its storied "Detective Comics" title. But the cousins have collaborated on more grounded fare - and This One Summer from 2014 and Skim from 2005. Each depict a turbulent, volatile, and confusing coming-of-age. In This One Summer, Rose and Windy, on the cusp of being teenagers, start to become aware of the adult problems that surround them. In Skim, the title character in her mid-teens deals with the reverberations of a suicide, and her growing social isolation.

Jillian Tamaki (@dirtbagg) shares MY BEST FRIEND, written by Julie Fogliano. Jillian won a Caldecott honor for her art in THIS ONE SUMMER, a graphic novel written by Mariko Tamaki, her cousin. She later turned a lot of heads in a picture book she wrote and illustrated called THEY SAY BLUE. But in choosing to make the art for MY BEST FRIEND, Jillian shares that there was one line in the manuscript that definitely sealed the deal. In this story of best friends at first sight, one child narrates an encounter she has with another on the playground. The text is playful and light, but carries a weight of sincerity undeniable in childhood friendships. What Jillian brought to the story through her expressive art brings a sense of whimsy and play, and reiterates the feeling of the whole world slipping away when it’s just you and your best friend. Her most recent book, Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me, is a sweet, spirited graphic novel about a Bay Area teen whose girlfriend keeps breaking up with her. Tamaki is one of the few graphic novelists with the distinction of writing comic books for both Marvel and DC (about characters from Harley Quinn to She-Hulk to the X-Men). Natalie and Mariko talk about the book that invented the term “Generation X” back in the day, what it’s like to be a girl in rural Canada, and hitchhiking across the galaxy.  Mariko’s Eight

That's right, folks! This week we discuss Andrew's favorite Marvel superhero, the one... the only... Carol Danvers, a.k.a Captain Marvel! Specifically, we're talking about the Higher, Further, Faster, More trade by Kelly Sue DeConnick, illustrated by David Lopez with colors by Lee Loughridge and letters by Joe Caramagna. Andrew specifically wanted to say this: Seriously folks, I love the character of Carol Danvers, in all of her complicated history. I feel like I didn't actually geek out enough while recording this episode. Like, I feel like I should have been more giddy with excitement. Anyway, since recording, I saw the movie and loved it, and I'm also going back and re-reading even more of Kelly Sue DeConnick's run writing this character and loving it. Carol is great because she's a feminist character without having to tell us in every panel "hey, I'm feminist" because SHE JUST IS. There was a lot of hate floating around out there ahead of the movie, particularly from a lot of men who somehow felt threatened by all the feminist rhetoric attached to the film and the character. Let me definitively say, you guys that were trying to sandbag this movie have completely missed the point. I hope my daughter grows up to be Carol Danvers. She's smart, she's capable, she doesn't take shit, and she's capable of listening to others. We should all be a bit more like Carol. Other things we talk about: Paper Girls by Brian K. Vaughan   This One Summer by Mariko Tamaki and Jillian Tamaki   Smile by Raina Telgemeier   Fence Vol 2 by C. S. Amanda and Jenn discuss Samoan literature, evil kids, contemporary YA, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by Clara Voyant by Rachelle Delaney and The 49th Mystic (Beyond the Circle Series #1) by Ted Dekker.   Questions 1. One of my best friends just got accepted to volunteer with the Peace Corps in Samoa. For her birthday, I want to give her a book that will get her (extra) hyped about the experience; she's already done a ton of research so I'm not necessarily looking for something informative so much as something that's just fun! I would love something focused on Samoa/South Pacific (that should probably skip the stranded-on-a-tropical-island trope because we're trying to be excited here). I was thinking of something more contemporary than Margaret Mead or Robert Louis Stevenson--maybe even something Own Voices but doesn't have to be. It doesn't necessarily have to relate to Peace Corps/volunteering/etc., but that would be cool too. She reads mostly fiction and some memoir but not a lot of straight non-fiction. Recently, she's been reading and enjoying books like "The Bees" by Laline Paull, "Less" by Andrew Sean Greer, and "Young Jane Young" by Gabrielle Zevin. Some of her forever favorites are "Don't Let's Go To the Dogs Tonight" by Alexandra Fuller, "The Girls from Corona Del Mar" by Rufi Thorpe, "Egg and Spoon" by Gregory Maguire, and anything Tom Robbins. Thank you! --Cel   2. I've always had depression, so at this point it seems like old hat, but recently I've been suffering with massive amounts of anxiety. Like, heart palpitating, ears rushing, feel dizzy and panicking over literally nothing. I am doing yoga, and I stopped eating meat, I journal every day, and I've read the self help books but honestly sometimes nothing helps except to distract myself until it goes away. What I'm looking for is basically a great audiobook (maybe a mystery?) with little to no real conflict that is fun. I like My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Lumberjanes, Steven Universe, and Adventure Time... I'm looking for something that is a sweet and fun romp but in no way causes the "are they gonna survive/are they sad that their families are dead" sort of anxiety that is both illogical and sadly my new reality. I loved Anne of Green Gables, but even that was kind of too much post- the first book. Note: I've read Hyperbole and a Half, Furiously Happy, The Year of Yes, and a lot of the other popular "self help" style books, but really what I'm looking for is good fun distraction. Please help my poor crazy brain, --W   3. Hello, I'm looking for fiction about evil children. One of my all-time favorite books is 'We Need to Talk About Kevin' by Lionel Shriver. I had an intense, visceral reaction to the title character in this novel, and the ending absolutely ripped my heart out. It made me want to read all I could about evil kids, but I wasn't able to find much. I read 'The Bad Seed' and 'Rosemary's Baby', and although those could both be classified as Horror, I was much more horrified by Kevin. I'm also hoping for something more contemporary. Do you guys have anything in mind that will fill my need for bad babies? Thank you! --Malarie   4. Hi there- I work in a bookstore and conduct a YA bookclub. We've read and loved books of multiple different genres. While we mostly stick to YA, we've recently started venturing into Sci-fi and Fantasy picks. Some of our past favorites have been Mosquitoland, Eleanor and Park, The Kids of Appetite, Cinder, Scorpio Races, House of the Scorpion, The Martian and Ready Player One. We've also read lots of Historical YA fiction like The Book Thief, Chains and Under a Painted Sky. While we've thoroughly enjoyed most of these books, we keep bumping into two problems with YA picks: 1. We enjoy the heavier themes of some contemporary and historical fic YA, like examinations on race, mental illness, and troubling family dynamics. But we've read too many that have described sexual violence (often familial) in very graphic detail. 2. Sometimes wading through the YA section, it's difficult to find books that are written well and don't follow the typical YA tropes. We're very tired of love triangles- especially in the fantasy and dystopian genres. Do you have any suggestions for a group of 15-16 year olds who love YA and Sci-fi/Fantasy but are tired of these particular topics? Bonus points for Fantasy picks. --Amber   5. Hi Jenn and Amanda! I have recently started a book club at my local non-profit for our volunteers. I work for Voices for Children (CASA), which assigns volunteers to look out for the best interests of children in foster care. So far we have read The Glass Castle, Evicted, and My Name is Leon. We have future picks of The Hate U Give, Dreamland, The Language of Flowers, and Lost Children of Wilder. Any suggestions for books about children in foster care/or any topics that deal with social justice/welfare (non-fiction/or fiction) would be great! --Emily   6. Hello! I am a devote reader of literary fiction but want to get into contemporary YA. Where's a girl to start? For guidance, some of my favourite reads of the past year include Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan series; What It Means When a Man Falls from the Sky; Goodbye, Vitamin; The Secret History; A Girl Is a Half-Formed Thing; and The Lonely Hearts Hotel. And though I haven't read much, my favourite YAs include This One Summer and Another Brooklyn. Help! --Caryn   7. Hey ladies! Recently, I have experienced some love life turmoil and being a big fan of book therapy, I was wondering if you knew of any books about unrequited crushes, or the friends to lover trope not working out. I prefer contemporary over fantasy if possible. Thank you! --Kristen     Books Discussed Welcome Home, edited by Eric Smith Etiquette and Espionage by Gail Carriger Sons for the Return Home by Albert Wendt Where We Once Belonged by Sia Figiel (tw: domestic violence) Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh Cabin Pressure by John Finnemore (rec by Nita) N0s4A2 by Joe Hill The Dinner by Herman Koch, translated by Sam Garrett Dread Nation by Justina Ireland The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary Pearson Peas and Carrots by Tanita S. That's right, it's Friendship to the Max as we chat with Mariko Tamaki about her new middle grade book Lumberjanes: Unicorn Power! Tamaki is certainly no stranger to the world of graphic novels, having written Skim and This One Summer (both illustrated by Jillian Tamaki). This One Summer caused waves a couple years ago when it was awarded both a Caldecott Honor and a Printz Honor (for excellence in literature written for young adults). It was the first graphic novel to be recognized with a Caldecott and only the second to snag a Printz. (I actually chatted with both cousins when they first won the Caldecott.) On this episode, we talk about writing Lumberjanes in a new format, writing what you don't know, growing up in a mixed-heritage household, queer representation in graphic novels and literature, and whether having the most banned book in the country is a badge of honor or not.

They begin with Jillian Tamaki's Boundless, published by Drawn and Quarterly. This is a collection of nine short stories, most of which have been previously published in Frontier, Nobrow, and Hazlitt.net. The guys begin by discussing how Tamaki structures the contents, along with including new pieces, in order to give the collection visual and thematic coherency. Unlike her longer narratives Skim and This One Summer, both with her cousin Mariko, Tamaki tends to use the shorter storytelling forms to create pieces that are slightly askew and bend the reality that we know. Next, Paul and Derek turn to Devin Grayson, John Bolton, and Sean Phillips's User (Image Comics). This was originally published as a three-issue prestige-format miniseries through Vertigo Comics in 2001, but until now has never been collected in a single volume. User is the tale of a young woman finding refuge in a MUD, escaping the chaos that surrounds her real-life work and family. What makes the narrative notable is its handling of online interaction and gender identification, quite provocative at the time of its original publication. And while the guys appreciate what Grayson and company are doing, they note the slightly dated nature of this comic. As they point out, understanding the temporal context puts everything into perspective.

In amongst the throngs of costumed chaos that the Jacob K Javits Center on the Saturday of New York Comic Con weekend, we find a reasonably quiet corner to sit down and discuss life and art with Jillian Tamaki — “reasonably,” of course, being a nice way of designated that rare spot where one can talk without shouting. Maybe there’s some metaphor to be explored there about finding oneself in amongst the pop culture sound and fury that is the contemporary comics scene. And Tamaki has certainly carved out a place for herself, rising to prominence in the indie comics and YA scenes with Skim, a collaboration with her cousin, writer Mariko, that landed the duo on all manner of year-end best of lists.  The two Tamakis joined forces again for 2014’s This One Summer, a teenage coming of age story that has once again landed the cousins in critics’ good graces. We had about 40 minutes before Tamaki had to rush off to a signing with First-Second, but we managed to cover a lot of ground, from collaborating to teaching, to surviving the Comic Con chaos. The questions about Adventure Time, sadly, will have to wait until next time.
