Thom Francis introduces us to poet Don Maurer who shared his work at the Poetic License Poetry Reading & Open Mic at the Fish Market in Troy on November 13, 2023. That night Don read his poem “Unnatural Acts,” that inspired a painting by Phil Palmieri in the exhibit. He also read “Nauset Beach, Cape Cod, 1840” and “Long Johns on the Line,” a poem on the changing seasons. Poetic License is a joint project of the Hudson Valley Writers Guild and Upstate Artists Guild that brings together regional poets and visual artists. For 2023, the exhibit was on display at the Fish Market in Troy and the Honest Weight Food Co-op in Albany. +++ Poetic License 2025 is almost here and the HVWG and UAG are very excited to welcome everyone to this year's exhibit featuring almost 40 pieces of art inspired by over 20 poems. This year we are heading back to the Fish Market in Troy with four events taking place throughout September including collage workshops, a poetry reading, and special reception during Troy Night Out. On Tuesday, September 30, the work will move across the river to the Honest Weight Food Coop for the months of October and November where we will have even more opportunities to view the art and take part in community events. For more information on the Poetic License project, see the artwork, and to read the poems that inspired it, go to https://www.poeticlicensealbany.com/

This week's Open Mic guest is Pam Marrone, Co-founder and Executive Chair of the Invasive Species Corporation. Marrone says there are over 37,000 invasive species in the world with over 3,500 that are considered harmful. Combined, these species have cost the global economy over $1 trillion dollars. As the climate warms, Marrone says these species are migrating farther north, impacting an even larger area and bringing danger to plant and animal species as well as industries essential to rural communities. Marrone says prevention is key but greater investment in biologicals and ag research is needed to help limit the spread of these harmful pests.

The Animal Communication Podcast

All of us have lost beloved animals. Our best friends, our greatest teachers - when they pass away, the sadness and grief can feel overwhelming. And yet, when we work with that grief, we can find gold. It may take a while but in allowing the sadness to appear, many times, we can land in a place of deeper insight, a tighter bond and so much more than we expected. In this episode, our three co-hosts share their own stories of pet love and loss - and what they learned from each animal that touched their lives.  Our Season Finale is coming soon and we want you to be a part of it! Budzinski is aware of the looming financial challenge facing row crop farmers and anticipates large federal outlays may be necessary to prevent significant farm losses. She hopes some funding cuts to Medicade can be restored and hopes the majority side of the aisle brings a spirit of bipartisanship back to the ag committee.

Thom Francis introduces us to Bob Sharkey, a local poet and short fiction writer. He is a board member of the Hudson Valley Writers Guild serving in many capacities over the years. Bob and his family run the annual Stephen A. DiBiase Poetry Prize contest, named after Bob's best childhood friend. Bob read his poem "After ODing on Peanut M&Ms during Game 6" that local poet and photographer Dan Wilcox described as “a funny piece on what a white nationalist world would look like,” at the Poets Speak Loud open mic on November 27, 2017. In their conversation, they discuss that poem, the local open mic scene, and more. ————— Bob Sharkey is the editor of the Stephen A. DiBiase Poetry Prize contest which is sponsored by his family. They decided to name the contest afterBob's best childhood friend. They grew up together in the Libbytown section of Portland, Maine. They liked to explore the fields, wooded areas, and marshes in the area between their homes on Wood Street and the Fore River. Stephen was like a big brother to Bob. Stephen went to Vietnam as an Army photographer. After he returned, he urged his friend Bob to avoid Vietnam at all costs and Stephen and his family helped Bob obtain conscientious objector status. In 1973, Stephen drowned in shallow water off the coast near Bath, Maine. The contest was designed by Bob to be unlike other contests and avoid some of the things that discouraged him from submitting to them. There are no entry fees. The $2,500 or so prize money is spread out among the top entrants with a modest first place prize award of $500. There are no line or page limits and the contest gladly reads all forms of poetry and is open to all subjects and topics or none. Published or unpublished work is welcome. There are no age limits and we typically receive many submissions by younger poets, some who have won prizes or recognition.

Pulled By The Root - Amplifying Adoption Issues

Open Mic Episode with Heidi, Elle, and Amy – Hosts of Pulled By The Root. Before recording interviews, we always take time to dive deep with one another. Amy thought it would be meaningful to share some of those behind-the-scenes conversations with you. For this episode, the only guideline was simple: bring a few topics—but don't tell anyone what they are in advance. What unfolded instead was an organic, heartfelt dialogue about what it means to be adopted and how that experience continues to shape our lives.Click here to send us a text. This week's guest is the incomparable Hughie Batherson—a man who doesn't just talk about what matters to him, he acts on it. From learning French as an adult to becoming a bilingual performer, Hughie embodies dedication, curiosity, and courage. His first-ever attempt at standup comedy? He won a Juste pour rire (Just for Laughs) competition. Since then, he's become a sought-after comic and motivational speaker across the country.   Hughie shares how he doesn't consider himself funny in his day-to-day life, but brings infectious energy to the stage—where humour becomes his tool for connection, education, and impact. A former teacher and professor with a Master's in Education focused on the role of humour in learning, Hughie brings both heart and hilarity to every audience he meets.   We chat about language, taking creative risks, and the power of storytelling—and we were surprised and thrilled when he gifted us a signed Drake Batherson jersey (his NHL-star nephew!). We also chat about his Cape Breton roots, his recent performance at Togetherland Art Gallery's Open Mic night and how we all know we'll be friends well beyond the show!   Watch this episode on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@mikeandkristen   Join our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/c/mikeandkristen   Us on the web: www.mikeandkristen.ca Instagram: www.instagram.com/mike_and_kristen/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mikeandkristencreative Shoot us a message! Thom Francis welcomes local writers Don Maurer and Alexander Perez, whose poems inspired pieces of visual art that were showcased in the Poetic License 2024 exhibit. They both shared their poetry on Monday, October 14, 2024, at the Poetic License Poetry Reading and Open Mic at the Honest Weight Food Co-op in Albany. — Poetic License celebrates the creative intersections of poetry and visual art! Now in its third year, the joint project of the Hudson Valley Writers Guild and the Upstate Artists Guild is all about bridging the worlds of poetry and visual expression in new and exciting ways. This year's exhibit, on display at the Honest Weight Food Co-op through November 10, flips the script on the traditional concept of ekphrastic art. Instead of poets responding to visual pieces, local artists were invited to create works inspired by poems submitted by both local and national poets. It's a creative inversion that brings the expressive power of both mediums together, resulting in a truly dynamic and thought-provoking collection of visual responses to the written word. The exhibit showcases 42 stunning pieces of art, created by 24 talented artists, each responding to poems written by 23 unique voices from the world of poetry. This fusion of imagery and language gives us a fresh look at how art can interpret, transform, and reimagine the written word. On October 14, 2024, poets featured in the exhibit were invited to read their work in a special poetry reading hosted by the legendary Dan Wilcox. Poets shared their pieces while surrounded by the very art they inspired—a full-circle moment for words and visuals alike. Today, we're thrilled to bring you the voices of two of those poets: Don Maurer and Alexander Perez. They'll share their poems and reflect on the artwork they inspired.
