 A Chairde,As June heads towards July the distant beat of your drums is pounding out their rhythm. The marching season for all of the Loyal Orders is well underway and the 12 July is fast approaching. One July, sitting during yet another negotiation, into the early hours with Tony Blair the ratatat of Lambegs sundered the quiet. We paused as he asked if I knew what that was. Yes ,I replied that's the Orangemen.“Jungle drums?” he said.I am minded to remind you that the Battle of the Boyne was fought on the 1st July not the 12th. The date changed in 1752 when the English adopted the Gregorian calendar introduced by Pope Gregory. The war was part of a much wider European conflagration – the Nine Years War. James was backed by the English Aristocracy, by France and by the Irish Catholic aristocracy. William who was James's son-in-law and King of Holland, was backed by the English merchant class, by Pope Innocent X1, by Spain and Germany and by Protestant settlers in Ireland. At its core it was William leading a ‘Grand Alliance' of Europeans to curb the power and expansion plans of the French King.The Pope contributed to Williams expenses and when news reached Rome of the victory there was a Te Deum hymn sang in a “joyous proclamation of praise, thanksgiving and faith.” The Pope was front and centre of it all. We shall be a nation, not a province, citizens not slaves.” Wolfe Tone On 28 June Republicans from across the island of Ireland will travel to Bodenstown, County Kildare, to stand in homage at the graveside of Theobald Wolfe Tone, the founder of Irish Republicanism.For those who know of Tone and for those who don't I want to recommend a new publication – Bodenstown: Honouring Wolfe Tone – A Pictorial History – which tells his remarkable and inspirational story and recounts the generations who have travelled to Bodenstown each June to remember and celebrate his life.This new publication profiles Tone and publishes photographs of many of the commemorations that have been held there. The first image of Bodenstown is of Padraig Pearse delivering the oration in June 1913. The Irish Republican Brotherhood had asked Pearse to speak and the event was chaired by veteran Fenian Tom Clarke. This episode was recorded on October 1, 2023, at Syracuse University's Goldstein Auditorium. Legendary broadcaster and Syracuse alum Bob Costas interviewed recently retired Hall of Fame Syracuse Basketball Coach Jim Boeheim. The event was a part of an alumni weekend entitled Orange Central. Boeheim guided the Orange to ten Big East Conference regular season championships, five Big East tournament championships, and 34 NCAA tournament appearances, including five Final Four appearances and three appearances in the national title game, culminating with the 2003 National Championship. In those games, the Orangemen lost to Indiana in 1987, and to Kentucky in 1996, before defeating Kansas in 2003 with All-American Carmelo Anthony. Costas was a broadcaster for NBC Sports from 1980 through 2019. He has received 28 Emmy awards for his work and was the prime-time host of 12 Olympic Games from 1988 until 2016. He currently is calling the MLB Playoffs for TBS and works occasionally for MLB Network. Costas was on Sports with Friends on Episode 82. This conversation will continue across the country. Kevin Gay was only 20 when he joined Essex Police. He was posted to Southend and to move back towards the location where his future wife lived he transferred to Stansted Airport, where he became an authorised firearms officer.Kevin then sought a specialist role and moved to the elite Force Support Unit where he became an integral part of the team. His role on the FSU was varied and he undertook surveillance, method of entry, public order deployments and many other interesting roles.Kevin was promoted and returned to West Essex. He was deployed to the G8 conference at Gleneagles and was a public order commander in Northern Ireland during the volatile period when "Orangemen" marched. This was a very political deployment and Kevin had a team of officers including firearms support due to the aggressive nature of the event. Redshirt junior linebacker Geoffrey Cantin-Arku joined GoTigers247 in this episode of Off the Boards. In the first segment, Geoffrey shares how he he came to play the game of football while growing up in Quebec City, Montreal, Canada. He describes playing hockey as a young kid, but do to the expense of playing hockey he transitioned to play football as a 10 year old. Geoffrey immediately fell in love with the game and a he began to dream of playing in the NFL one day. While playing for Cégep Garneau, he decided to come to the States and attend a football camp at Syracuse University. After the camp he was immediately offered by Syracuse and joined the Orangemen. Geoffrey explains how difficult it is for young football players in Canada to be noticed and how there are so many young kids in Canada just waiting to be noticed. On top of coming to America for the first time, Geoffrey had to learn how to speak English. With French being his original language, Geoffrey explains that he had to learn words that American coaches would use with him as they coached him, but he spent quite a bit of time and energy to learn how to speak English fluently. Playing ball in America has been a huge accomplishment for him, but learning to speak English fluently in three years is something he is as proud of as anything else. In the second segment, Geoffrey shares how Memphis got involved with him after he entered the transfer portal in 2021. He explains how he was offered by Power 5 school, but made the decision to join Memphis because of the culture that Ryan Silverfield and the staff has built. His introduction to the team was with linebacker coach, Jordon Hankins, on a visit early on, and he immediately bonded with Hankins. The deal was done by the time Geoffrey and his mother made an official visit to Memphis, and he experienced the "familial" bond that the players have with each other. Geoffrey explains that his mom is the most important person in the world with him and her approval for the next school he attended was extremely important. His mother loved the staff, immediately trusted them, and also is a massive Elvis fan. Geoffrey ends the episode talking about the veteran leadership on the Memphis defense and how the camaraderie on the defense made the transition to Memphis easy for him. He specifically talked about Tyler Murray and Zay Cullens as the guys he is closest to on the team and the advances he has made in his game due to their leadership. He believes that the veteran leadership on the team has allowed for the transition to new defensive coordinator, Matt Barnes, to be as seamless as it could possibly be. He also expresses a lot of admiration for Coach Barnes and his ability to teach and share his vision for the defense in a way that makes sense for all the players. The Orange Order in Northern Ireland and Scotland: Its origins, practices and principles, from the Battle of the Boyne to the Good Friday Agreement.. Laurie Taylor talks to Joseph Webster, Lecturer in the Study of Religion at the University of Cambridge, and author of a new book about the Orange Order in Scotland which explores the politics of anti Catholic sectarianism and ultra Britishness, as well as the tensions between grassroots Orangemen and a hierarchy wishing to cultivate a respectable image beyond controversial parades and football hooliganism. Also, Karine Bigand, Senior Lecturer in Irish Studies at Aix-Marseille University, considers the history of Orange politics in Northern Ireland and current attempts to memorialise the Orange Order and contribute positively to reconciliation between divided communities post the GFA in 1998.
