One of the most iconic musicals of all time, Hello, Dolly!, has returned to the London Palladium, with Jerry Herman's unforgettable score including Put On Your Sunday Clothes, Before the Parade Passes By, It Only Takes a Moment and Hello, Dolly! It's a huge, no-expense-spared production, with a cast of 40, and the legendary Imelda Staunton as the witty and charming matchmaker Dolly Levi. Jenna Russell plays the millineress Irene Molloy. Jenna is well known for her TV roles in Call The Midwife and Eastenders, and many theatre roles, including Guys and Dolls, Merrily We Roll Along, and her Olivier award-winning turn as Dot in Sunday In The Park With George. Nuala McGovern speaks to Jenna about the revival of Hello, Dolly! and the show's message to new audiences. In February 2021, a coup returned Myanmar to military rule, overthrowing the democratically elected government. Under the regime, violence against civilians has escalated, with thousands jailed, tortured and killed – although the numbers are believed be much higher. At least three million people have been displaced. Just two weeks ago, a UN Report outlined the gendered impact of the coup: It found that military forces have committed widespread forms of sexual violence. However, despite the coup's devastating impact, women and girls are taking on key roles within the resistance movement. Also this month, there have been seperate news reports that women are being conscripted into the military. Nuala discusses the situation with Tin Htar Swe, the former head of The BBC's Burmese Service. Nine-year-old Ella Adoo-Kissi-Deborah was the first person in the world to have air pollution listed as a cause of death. She lived near the South Circular Road in Lewisham, South East London and died of a fatal asthma attack in 2013. Her mother, Rosamund, who has been campaigning since her daughters death, is now seeking is seeking an official apology from the government as her high court claim against them heads to trial. She explains why she wants an official apology from the government. Nuala also speaks to Sophie Howe who is the former First Generation Commissioner for Wales where she advised the government on policy around transport and climate change - she now does this for other countries. SAnnie Garthwaite's second novel, The King's Mother, tells the story of historical figure Cecily Neville, mother of Edward IV and Richard III. Annie believes Cecily's role in the Wars of the Roses has been hugely underestimated by historians and her novel places her firmly at the heart of the action. Essie Fox has written five historical novels and her most recent, The Fascination, is set in the world of Victorian theatres and travelling fairs. They join Nuala to discuss the challenge of writing the stories of women who have been overlooked by the history books.Presented by Nuala McGovern Producer: Louise Corley

Pretty sure no one ever said “a family that trains and competes in triathlon together, stays together” but they might after listening to this episode. Tyler and Jenna Russell live in Ohio, have been married for 6 years, are raising 2 young boys and are both pursuing their multi-sport dreams.Jenna is a Special Education teacher, and she describes working with children with disabilities as both “exhausting and rewarding at the same time.” She admits that she ran cross-country and track in High School. Even though she claims that she wasn't “very good at it” and remembers it being more of a good time with friends, she did continue into her 1st year of college but had to quit because of injuries.Tyler works full-time and is currently pursuing his MBA. While still training for triathlon, he acknowledges that with all that is going right now it's Jenna's turn. He is stepping back from 70.3 and will compete in smaller races for a while. The couple shares how they got introduced to the sport of triathlon and the disciplines that they are the strongest and weakest in. Through conversation we learn that Jenna learned to swim in middle school and Tyler qualified to run the Boston Marathon in 2019.We talk about the difference between qualifying to run the Boston Marathon and actually running the Boston Marathon. I ask them which discipline they would choose to tackle if participating on a relay team.Jenna is currently training for Ironman 70.3 Ohio and at the time of the recording we were about 13 weeks out. She gives us an update on how she is feeling and how training is going so far. She shares that Tyler's dad is also racing Ohio and having a “buddy” to race with played into her decision when picking which race to sign up for.Tyler talks us through his experience at Ironman 70.3 Steelhead in Michigan last year. He explains that the race was shortened due to a small craft warning on Lake Superior. Since I've never been to Age Group awards or a World Championship Slot Allocation, and may never get to at this point, they share how that process worked for them.We get to hear some of Tyler's experience in St. George and they talk us through how they balance life and training with 2 small children. At least for now, they are taking turns training and racing. Because Tyler's dad is also signed up for 70.3 Ohio, they have plans to have Tyler's mom to watch the boys while the 3 of them are out for a bike session. We discuss their thoughts on the full distance race. They both have plans to do a 140.6 but acknowledge the training would be too much for now. We discuss our “bucket list” race venues. Jenna explains how she got inspired to get back into racing triathlon while spectating the finish line at St. George. We learn what bikes they ride and for those of you with a triathlete in your life, Jenna reveals what she received for her last birthday. It turned out to be both practical and educational. We round out our conversation talking about the next generation of triathletes. To document Jenna's triathlon journey, she has created a new Instagram account. You can follow her @ironman.mom.in.trainingAt the time of publish, Tyler has 100 Instagram followers and 1 single post. Baby steps.

"Once upon a time... later..."This week, Drew and Cassie are joined by Cassie's brother, Matthew, to explore the deconstruction of fairy tales in Act II of Into the Woods. In Act I, the Baker and his Wife collected the cow as white as milk, the cape as red blood, the hair as yellow as corn, and the slipper as pure as gold. They successfully lifted the curse on their house and now they have a baby, as they've wished for so long. Now, they are living "happily ever after," as are Cinderella, Jack, Little Red Riding Hood, and our other characters... or are they? Act II explores the consequences of the characters' actions in Act I in a fresh, new way. We dig in deep, discussing the complexity of Stephen Sondheim's score, the "bean theme," the many parallels between Act I and Act II, the Baker/Cinderella ship, the Jack/Little Red ship, the word "nice," some of the changes made before the show opened on Broadway, more "realization songs," dwarfs vs. dwarves, and much more that we can't reveal without getting too spoilery! What is Cassie's mysterious childhood memory of Act II? Which role was Matthew going to play in Drew's dream childhood backyard production of Into the Woods? What fascinating insights will Matthew offer regarding the Granny/Giant double casting? You'll have to listen to find out!Throughout the episode, we reference the following productions of Into the Woods. As always, we recommend watching before listening to the episode, but you definitely don't need to watch all of these! The original Broadway production is the one to watch for sure!- The 1987 original Broadway production, professionally filmed in 1989 (available on Broadway HD), starring Bernadette Peters as the Witch, Chip Zien as the Baker, Joanna Gleason as the Baker's Wife, Tom Aldredge as the Narrator/Mysterious Man, and Kim Crosby as Cinderella- The 2002 Broadway Revival production, starring Vanessa Williams as the Witch, Stephen DeRosa as the Baker, Kerry O'Malley as the Baker's Wife, John McMartin as the Narrator/Mysterious Man, and Laura Benanti as Cinderella- The 2010 West End Regent's Park production (available on Broadway HD), starring Hannah Waddingham as the Witch, Mark Hadfield as the Baker, Jenna Russell as the Baker's Wife, Billy Boyle as the Mysterious Man, and Helen Dallimore as Cinderella- The 2012 Central Park production, an American recreation of the West End Regent's Park production, starring Donna Murphy as the Witch, Denis O'Hare as the Baker, Amy Adams as Cinderella, Chip Zien as the Mysterious Man, and Jessie Mueller as Cinderella- The 2019 Hollywood Bowl production, starring Patina Miller as the Witch, Skyler Astin as the Baker, Sutton Foster as the Baker's Wife, Anthony Crivello as the Mysterious Man, and Sierra Boggess as CinderellaMusic: Through The Woods by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com

"Do you know what you wish? Are you certain what you wish it what you want?"Have we said "we're excited" enough yet? Probably, but we're going to say it approximately fifty more times. Drew and Cassie are joined by Drew's sister, Daurie, to work our way through the complexities of Act I of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Into the Woods. This 1987 musical tells the tale of a Baker and his Wife who learn that their next-door neighbor, a Witch, was once wronged by the Baker's father and so she placed a spell on them so they could never have a child. In order to break this spell, the Witch sends them "into the woods" to collect various iconic fairy tale objects. Act I of this musical weaves together the plots of four fairy tales: Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel. Along the way, we talk about the show's themes, the double-cast roles, Jack and Little Red's ages, sibling rivalry, the varied portrayals of the Baker and his relationship with the Baker's Wife, Milky White, Cassie's cues from the production she assistant stage managed, the Baker's Wife's "celebrity list," the show's choreography, Daurie's experience playing Rapunzel, the brilliance of this interpretation of Cinderella, and much more, including a plethora of our favorite quotes!Throughout the episode, we reference the following productions of Into the Woods. For nearly 40 years, Jenna Russell has been tackling hard-hitting roles on stage and on screen that speak to audiences today. Moreover, she has established herself as a prime interpreter of the works of Stephen Sondheim, taking on roles in 'Into the Woods', 'Merrily We Roll Along' and winning an Olivier Award for playing Dot/Marie in 'Sunday in the Park with George'.  Alongside her impressive repertoire of Sondheim works, Jenna has also played leading roles in 'Fun Home', 'The Bridges of Madison County' and most recently played the eponymous character in 'Piaf'.  On screen, her work also extends through to 'Doctor Who' and 'Eastenders', always playing compelling women with interesting stories to tell. As well as this, she is also a doting mum and partner to fellow actor Raymond Coulthard. Today, Jenna remains one of the most acclaimed and revered actresses on the West End and on Broadway and it seems she has no plans on pausing her career any time soon.As Jenna Russell continues plans for her upcoming solo concert at Cadogan Hall, she took some time to talk to us about what she hopes to bring for her first solo show. Despite living away from London, she tells us about how much she still loves going to watch theatre shows and remains committed to being a theatre actress. In this interview, we also reflect on the past year and how restrictions have impacted the industry that she values so dearly. We look back at her most recent work and we see Jenna reminisce about working with some of her most respected peers in the industry including fellow actress Sally Ann Triplet as well as multi-award winning director Trevor Nunn, and of course beloved composer Stephen Sondheim. It's an endearing conversation and we hope after listening, it makes you love Jenna Russell even more than we already do.

John Reen talks to local Writer Emma Pitt about her writing career in film and TV and the release of her award winning film "The Ballard of a Haunted Man." Emma Pitt was born in Oxfordshire and grew up in the Somerset village of Stogumber where her parents still live. From there, she moved to South East London to study for a Communications and Sociology degree at Goldsmiths University and has lived there ever since. Her work mentor once asked her ‘what do you really want to do?' so with that in mind she enrolled on a TV Script Writing Course at City Lit in Central London. She'd done Script Writing as part of her first degree and often thought about being a writer. Jim Hill taught the course. Jim has a lengthy TV career; he created Boon and directed Lovejoy, Casualty and Minder. 5 minutes into that class, Emma knew this was for her. Jim encouraged her to enrol onto the TV Script Writing MA, which he ran, at De Montfort University in Leicester. It was a 2-year part time course so she moved into a part time role in the Regulatory Performance Team at Kings: a job she is still in.   She achieved a Distinction in the MA and won the Media Film and Journalism Prize for Best Project. She then secured an agent, Rebecca Watson at Valerie Hoskins Associates and has since been commissioned to write for Jed Mercurio's ‘Critical' on Sky 1 and has had projects in development with a number of TV companies including Red Productions and ITV. She's also won a number of short play competitions, and one of these plays was a short horror called ‘The Ballad of a Haunted Man'.   Emma met TV cameraman Dan Shoring during her MA. In 2017 they decided to turn ‘The Ballad of a Haunted Man' into a short film. Dan organised the crew and Emma assembled the cast: she already knew Helen Lederer, Emma's husband suggested Shane Attwooll, who he knew from the local music scene – Shane had just played George Cornell opposite Tom Hardy in Legend. Helen suggested Eliza Leonard to play her daughter. Thankfully they all loved the script. The film was made with no budget and a lot of good will. Emma also directed and co-produced with Dan. It's now screened at festivals across the world and won a number of awards, including Best Actor for Shane at The Twin Tiers International Film Festival in New York, Best Horror Film at The Mediterranean Film Festival in Cannes and Best Woman Filmmaker for Emma at the Los Angeles Independent Film Awards. In total it's received 3 Best Actor awards, 7 Seven Best Actor nominations, 5 Best Film awards and 17 Best Film nominations. It was released online on Sat 7th March after a 2-year festival run. Her new short film, The Boy Who Thought He Could Fly is just starting on the festival circuit. It stars Shane Attwooll, Jenna Russell and Archie Sanders, and is focused around the themes of grief, loss and of how important it is to talk and to listen. It's already won the Silver Spotlight Award for Best film at Spotlight Film Awards in Atlanta and Best Actor Under 18 at the monthly Gold Film Awards in London for Archie.   Emma had a one act play, Invisible String, staged last year at an Off West End Theatre by Get Over It Productions who also staged her short play Ever Changing Skyline at the Chiswick Playhouse earlier this year. Ever Changing Skyline has just been selected by Kibo Productions to be staged as part of their new showcase at the Omnibus theatre in Clapham. She is also developing her own TV project with BBC Drama. Emma is married to Americana/Country singer Dave Sutherland whose music you can hear on both films. The Ballard of a Haunted man has now bee released on Youtube and can be found on the links below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ma19wOk3-o www.maritimeradio.co.uk

THE COUNTDOWN HAS BEGUN!  No, not Christmas...You have until the 13th of December to send in your BEST OF MOMENTS OF 2018. You can send us the time codes of favourite clips and we’ll put them into our special Christmas episode and GIVE YOU a shout out.Send em in on the socials (@twoshotpod) OR EMAIL: twoshotpod@gmail.comBUT BEFORE ALL THAT... It’s EPISODE 67This week Craig & Griff travelled to London for an intensive few days of recording, and first up was a blather with the incredible JENNA RUSSELL.Craig was working in London so they took advantage of having an apartment to set up the microphones in Earls Court. After a wander to find some below average breakfast it was time to go and meet Jenna. If you’ve been to the theatre in the past 20 years then there’s a pretty good chance you’ll have seen the amazing Jenna (sorry, that makes her sound like a magician. She’s not). Craig & Jenna get the kettle on, slice up some lemon drizzle and get down to the conversation. Craig & Jenna first met 20 years ago.Craig was woefully under qualified for his first job whereas Jenna was simply perfection. Needless to say they got on. The conversation flows and revelations pop up as we get to know, really know, the quite wonderful human that is JENNA RUSSELL. It was such a pleasure for us to have Jenna on and we think you’ll love this episode. Jenna is pure class.  Enjoy. Get in touch...
